It's hard to write, because it's loosely based on the girl next door when we were teens, so I know how you feel when someone you care about is being abused. (Be there for your friend, Gina. Breaking up is hard, 'cause old feelings can keep drawing you back in -- and getting away from a control freak is harder still!) About invoking: I think Andy and Sam have got it just right. Some religions differentiate between things you enjoy that make you healthier or smarter, and "self-indulgences" that don't. Very few people don't practice any kind of self-indulgence. But it only becomes a problem if it seriously affects your body or your relationships with God and others. If somebody's self-indulgence is taking over their life so they can't function for themselves or those around them, they've got a spiritual as well as a physical problem: They dishonor their body (the Temple of God) and aren't able to use the gifts God gave them for the good of their fellow man. But it sounds like Gina's tight with God; and the way you got PO'd at the news, I'd say you're tight with your fellow man too. So if you want to hiccup while you're walking your dog, noone should complain. You really are a good person. Don't sell yourself short. (At the end of your post, you were thinking about invoking, but then you got PO'd at the news, and I wonder, did you give yourself hiccups then? I've wondered about topics like that myself, even though I unfortunately can't induce hiccups, so I don't have that issue! Personally I don't agree with that priest saying that anything 'pleasurable' is sin and makes you hell-bound or whatever, because God created pleasurable things for us to enjoy, not to tantalize us to sin. The problem, as Sam alluded to, is when we let pleasurable things get out of control. I don't think it's wrong to enjoy inducing hiccups in yourself and even to do it very often like you do. And I would consider that to be different from sex because sex is supposed to be a special act between two people (ideally married), while giving yourself hiccups is just something that you happen to enjoy, even if it may 'turn you on' in its own way. Be glad you can do it; it's something you enjoy, and as long as you're not letting it get in the way of more important things in your life or something, I don't see anything wrong with it. I don't know if hiccups were invented by God, or the devil, or someone in between, but either way if you enjoy them, that ought to be a positive thing. As for masturbation, which Sam mentioned... I have no idea; let's not even go there. But finally, saying that something like that means you're doomed to hell isn't right. God isn't a heavenly bean-counter who is waiting to see you slip up and send you to damnation. The reason anyone will make it to heaven isn't because they've been 'good enough' (because we can't be!), it will be because they had a strong, growing relationship with God and have let Him lead their life. So above all, let Him lead you in this issue. Don't be afraid of not qualifying for heaven - just follow what your conscience tells you and keep close to God. Sam On the subject of Gina getting pleasure from her hiccups: I am not Christian, I am Jewish, but I wanted to give my two cents on my opinion of that. (I hope you don't consider less of that because I'm a different religion. I know some people who are stringently (sp?) Orthodox Christian and have deep set beliefs.) I think going to Heaven or going to Hell is kind of a stretch. Think of it this way, there are a lot of things between pure good and pure evil in this world. But really, I am getting off topic here. Pleasure is a matter of consideration. Pleasure can be defined as something that makes you happy. Some people like to exercise and some people like to play sports, for example. (My roommate doesn't like exercising but I do, and I don't like playing sports as much.) So you can say pleasure is relative to everyone. Some people even think sex is a sin. (In my religion it isn't any of the sort.) The bottom line is, if you feel bad about it don't do it. But don't stop getting them because you're concerned about going to hell. I've had enough experiences in my life (And 20 years isn't that long) to know that masturbation or any other guilty pleasure isn't a bad thing. Gina SAM, I liked your story about the girl with hiccups in the crowded classroom. I can tell you, you can get in trouble when the room is empty too! I was in lecture hall the other day with an empty seat on each side of me and an empty row in back. The class already started when this guy sits down right behind me, slouches down and puts his feet up in the cracks between the seats. I couldnt believe he did that, like I really liked having his big dirty boots a couple inches from my head! But halfway throuh the class he made up for it by getting hiccups, and thats the last thing I remember about the lecture. He was hiccuping pretty slow, maybe once a minue, about 30 all together, and they werent veryt loud but enough for me to hear. Sometimes after a hiccup he'd sigh "ohhh". Gina Me and my boyfriend talked about the male-female thing thats in the other discussion board. I didnt used to care about anybodys hiccups but mine, but now I kind of got into it and I think their interesting but dontturn me on. tanya i had a great siting 2 days ago. it was hot so me and about 10 friends decided to drive to the beach. we took 2 cars. i was in a van yjay had a guy driving, 3 girls, and myself. we were all excited cranking music, singing and laughing and all of a sudden my friend..let's call her sara..hiccuped. it was a low HUCK. she looked totally embarrassed and looked at everyone's faces to see if they noticed. apparently no one did. i mean, they probobly heard it, but they obviously didn't care as much as i did. so she saw that only i was looking at her and she just shrugged and made a funny face, like oops. she kept talking and i didnt hear or see another hiccup for about 5 minutes, so i thought it was just a single, and apparently, so did she. so about 5 minutes after she hiccuped i saw a HUGE hiccup push out her chest, but it was silent. she looked embarrassed again and took a drink out of her water bottle but while she was drinking she let out another huge silent hiccup and coughed a little. still no one noticed. she sat there for about 10 minutes not saying anything, just smiling, and about every 15 seconds she'd rock with one of those huge hiccups. since she was on the bench infront and diagonal from me i could pretty much watch all her body movements. her throat didnt suck in much but her shoulders and chest rocked and her head would tip back a little. Well after about 10 minutes of the silent hiccups she was laughing and she let out a loud HUCK, much like her first hiccup, only louder. everyone laughed, including sara, but in the middle of her laugh another giant HUCK came out. she HUCK'ed again about 4 more times, still about 15 seconds apart. i was excited hoping someone would start talking about them but then she didn't hiccup again. she acted totally normal afterwards and no one said a word. i've never seen her with the hiccups in the 4 years ive known her. she obviously didnt get them a lot and was VERY embarrassed of them. it was definatly the best siting ive had in a LONG time. anyways, hope you liked it. I cant write stories like you guys, but I'll be starting community college in the fall & hope to have some sightings for you then. Some of you know I had $ troubles last yr & have been working in a nursing home, but it helped me decide what I want to do, I'm going for physcial therapist. Andy, you asked if I'm still invoking & I'm a little ashamed to say yes. I try to skip some days but I dont know whats wrong with me, I just cant. I think from invoking so much I'm getting 'hiccupier' cause my cases used to last 20 min but now sometimes they last an hour. Thats making it hard to find hiccup time cause I dont want my parents to catch me. I get scared when I cant stop cause I wonder if I really did it this time & my body had gone into hiccup mode permanently. I know from the articles I'm not the only one whose hiccups run way past their welcome but you invoke again later anyway. BF is an HL & hiccups have pretty much taken over our love life. Sarah My new boyfriend got them yesterday. We were at my sisters place. Had just had dinner. And so we sat there, me, my boyfriend, my sister and her boyfriend, watching tv. My boyfriend (call him Brian) had his arm around me. So, all of a sudden he lets out a loud hiccup. I didn't think mutch about it, thought it was just a single. But after about fifteen secounds he did it again, three times in a row. I saw him get all nervous and he took away his arm from me. "Excuse me" he said. "I have the hiccups". Everyone laughed a bit and I saw how embarrassed he was. He kept on hiccupping every four seconds or so. Tried to hold his breath to, but he just hiccupped hard right through it, it made his whole body jump a lot! The hiccups sounded like little boy hiccups. His neck sank in deeply and his chest bounced out. It was great! But after ten minutes or so, he went to the kitchen and took a drink and that cured them. Later that day, he mentioned to me that he had been so embarrassed about them and that he wasn't used to spicey food, so he thought that was what triggered them! All in all a great sighting! lulu i'm usin this as a substitute submission form as i cant use that, so without further ado, i think i'll tell u about a couple of new sightings! the 1st took place in class a while ago. the guy concerned is 16 yrs old, about 5'5", thin with hair that slightly resembles coronation street's jamie baldwin's (fellow uk-dwellin saddos will kno who i mean). facially, he's quite square and elongated with a wry, wide mouth and big, straight-browed hazel eyes and a perpetual tan. my omly complaint about the sighting i'm about to tell u about is that i cudnt c him, thus disenabling me to enjoy the visuals - contracting neck and torso and a chest-caressing hand, u kno... but i wont holdu any longer in suspense. i heard him say someting that was punctuated afterwards by a throaty "hurk!" which was followed bya groan, and at ten second intervals, a "huck" and a "hmk". nothing more seemed to happen for a while (he mustve been holdin em in or they mustve temporarily stopped - i find sporadics v thrillin) but then i heard what i can only describe as more of the same:) i guess that case mustve spanned some 15-20 mins. at no point did he drink water or acknowledge them vocally, but it was an ok sighting. think he zipped his coat up and hid under his hood durin the pleasurable time. for all its shortcomings, that sightin had me regrettin havin turned him down when he'd asked for my #. only qualm i had then was how irritatin id find his superior intellect, not aware of the, um, compensating factor! no subsequent cases but think he mightve let off a good teaser today! the 2nd also involves a guy at college, of a similar age, with mousy short hair and whom i havent had a good glimpse of facially yet but i intend to. boat 5@8", this one, and same kinda build. the case he experienced one tutorial was of abotu the same duration as the previous one and comprised of high-pitched, not-too-loud, throaty "hics", "hurks" etc. i id'd him as he and a friend came to my end of the room to get a cup of coffee which seemed to cure him :(. as he stood there, he let out a glassy "hic" punctuated with a heavy sigh. had to turn away at that point, worried that he or someone else wud cotton onto my fascination. lol. well, til nxt time... Hicky Chicky Hey all. It's been a very hiccup-less time recently for me. but today .... I got hiccups! I was walking around the mall shopping with my mom. We had just eaten lunch (I had soup), and I was shopping for thank you notes in this really pricey place when I just started getting awful hard hiccups. Another time I remember I said "Oh good HUCK! 3 weeks ordering time is plenty HUCK!" My chest started to hurt after a while. They left after I left the store. It was very hot though, and I enjoyed having them in public, as I haven't had em in a while. Oh yes, I was wearing jeans and a thin aqua sweater. Andrew [h] Hey all hiccup lovers... here is a message from Taiwan. I was walking around a very large art museum recently when I thought I heard someone hiccup -- instantly my hiccup radar was up! I looked around the large room I was in, which was very dimly lit, and eventually found a Chinese girl -- very sweet-looking and pretty -- who had the hiccups! She was about 16 yrs of age with black hair cut like a boy's, but her hair was not too short. She was very athletic, wearing a tracksuit and sneakers. She was with her parents, and had rolled up an A4-size information sheet into a tube. She was using the tube to muffle the sound of her hiccups, by hiccuping down the tube. Anyway, she had a pretty full-on case, because she would hiccup violently about every 5-6 seconds. It was very easy to meander around and seem as though I was not following her. A couple of times she would be caught out and would hiccup without muffling the sound. They were all audible anyway. George [e] Gina: I agree with Sam. Taking time off to chill can help you get more mentally ready to continue your education. Also might help you decide what to study. During this time, you might also check with the financial aid office at any school your thinking about attending. Go in and talk to someone there and ask what might be available. Also if they have recommendations of other sources. Start gathering information about sources of schlorships, grants, loans, internships, work study programs that you might can seek. Sick em tiger. Sam This isn't a hiccup comment but a tip to Gina. College is a whole lot of work that you don't see coming. And a year off in between to work is highly recommended in books I've read. I sometimes wish I took that approach. So don't sweat it! College is something that will wait for you. Gina Holiday Greetings everyone. Lets put the past behind us & I'll start by wishing our British friends a Happy Xmas. I want to apologize to Lara for implying you dont exist. I guess our internet selves are all we have to offer each other so lets just resolve to keep our personalities down to, oh say 4? :) Its been a year of ups & downs for me. Dads job went overseas & when I graduated from HS my parents held back my college $ at the last minute so I couldnt go. Didnt take it well, cried and hiccuped nonstop for a whole week. I dont smoke drink or do drugs, so hiccups are my stress release. I took a lot of my anger out on BF who had nothing to do with it & we broke up for a while. I think he went out with somebody else just to spite me but we worked thru it & we're OK now. So this yr I'm working in a nursing home & will start college next fall. I hope to have some hiccup stories for you then. One of my jobs at the home is to help the residents with their meals, those who need it, but I wont write about their hiccups, they distress me terribly. Many residents are demented in some way & they seem so helpless, like they dont remember the tricks the rest of us know for not getting hiccups or for getting rid of em. :( But things are looking up & I wish all of you a happy and productive 05.
