Comments: My name is Veronika Löffler (Veronika Hogya, I was born in Kisrozvágy 20 May, 1937).
I would like to share the following information with all of Hogya’s descendant:
This home page helped me to meet with one of my cousins Viktor Hogya (was born in Kisrozvágy 1933). He was a school director in Ricse (close to Kisrozvágy). As now He is a pensioner, he has time to found out things about our family roots, and about the place where all we come from. First he written two books about Ricse (Village of Georg Cukor Family), and now he has written a book about Kisrozvágy. The book went to press a few weeks ago. I think that book would be very useful all of you. So I am looking for somebody, who can help to translate it, and somebody who can help to find a publisher in Canada or in America.
The other information that I would like to share with all of you, that boundary of Kisrozvágy between Kisrozvágy and Karos there is a completed conquest excavation. (Hungarian conqueror of the 9th. century). Here the Hungarian government established a conqueror village (Berzseny falu) with a lot of tent of „Jurta” which is showing how our descendant had lived in the 9-10 th. Century, and what kind of tools they had, and there are lot of domestic animals what they kept. The conqueror village is open between May and October. In summertime many programs are held here: bowman competition, riding etc. Many school groups go to there to see it. You can find more about it on the page: http://www.bodremka.hu

If somebody can help for us please write me, on the e-mail address of:

Comments: Thomas,

I have determined that all of the Hogya's originally hail from Kis-Rozvágy. Most of my relatives are from a neighboring small town named Lácza. My great-great-great-grandfather (György Hogya) was born in Kis-Rozvágy in 1795, which is as far back as the records go. He moved to Lácza in the 1820's after marrying. I don't have any record of György's brothers, sisters or parents, so connecting names that far back is just not possible. I do have in my files a number of census documents from the 1800's showing Hogya family members in Kis-Rozvágy. Maybe one of them is more directly related to you. Otherwise, it's probably safe to say that we are distant cousins :-)

Comments: Bernie, We are quite possibly related. My great grandparents were from Kis Rosvagy, Stephen Hogya & Barbara Toth. They had Janos, Balasz, Mary, Alex, Elizabeth, Anna, Clara and Steve. Balasz was my grandfather and John was my father. I am trying to find any brothers or sisters of my great grandfather Stephen Hogya and their families. I know little of him. If you can help with this and also how we might be related, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks, Thomas Hogya

Comments: Thank you for the beautiful tribute to your family. In 2 weeks I am leaving for Hungary with my 86 year old father and my cousin for a genealogy trip to my father's family towns. I am sure many villages will be similar to the places you described. None of us speak Hungarian but we are anxious to walk on the land of our ancestors. The houses have numbers also. We would love to find the one of our great great grandfather.

Comments: Hi Bernie,

What a great website! What a warm and heartfelt experience you had on your visit to Hungary. Thank You for sharing that with all of us. I too went on a "Journey of Discovery" to Hungary in 1992, up to the same area your family came from, and found my roots beyond the City of Miskolc in a small village named KISKINIZS, where my mother, Elizabeth KOVACS was born and raised and left for America in 1938. This villge is also in the Borsod-Abau-Zemplen Megye, and there I met my 3 first cousins. On a an early sunday morning, in the village church (built 1806) I sat in a wood pegged, original church pew, that my grandfather and great grandfather had sat in so many years ago...(each village family has their own pew) I have to say, the connection I had at that moment to my roots, my family, my history was one of the GREATEST feelings I have ever felt! (I had "Goose Bumps") I was also able to visit my great grandparents house, and, I too ran my hands over the walls and the doorframes... everywhere they would have touched... again, the connection I felt to the past, to them, was incredable!

I also went off to find my father's (Steven Leves) village of JANOSY, Bereg Megye, which is now in the Ukraine. I found 2 cousins there and had lunch in my grandfathers house (Michael Leves, the village Mayor, long since passed) the house still in the family. I also found my Great Grandparents house, still standing and occupied in the village. I have visited Hungary 7 more times since that 1st trip, and although I was born & raised here, I speak almost fluent Hungarian, so for me, I really do feel "at home" when on a visit.. I have traveled the world, both on my own and courtesy of "Uncle Sam" for 4 years, all the places I have been, all the beauty I have seen, and yet nothing compares to that little village I go off to....I have made many friends there, gone fishing, swimming, wild Boer hunting in the Zemplen mountains, and really look forward to "Going back Home" each trip! All the Best, Ernie Leves, Somerset, NJ

Comments: Wow I really found all of your experiences spellbinding..My great grandparents ( Josef & Fredrika Radler )came in from Hungary in 1906 landing them in Philadelpa,Pa and later in life...southern New Jersey..., but I have not been able to locate much except the ship manifest thru Ellis Island..That was very interesting.. My great Aunt Freida was born in Hungary. She used to tell me some stories about family but I was not smart enough to ask more detailed info .. then she passed on .. now I could kick myself. One thing I do remember was the name Von Dombinski, your comment about dombrowski just made me think of it...I am not sure how many generations may have come from Hungary..Aunt Freida also said that her parents came to America because the family found theirselves on the wrong side of the tracks so to speak.(politics I believe is what she meant.) This website make me want to dig up those papers from whatever box they ended up in during our move..

My grandparents John and Elizabeth Hogya were both from Hungary but I do not now where! My mother married John Hogya Jr. and her maiden name was Julia Vancza. Her mother's name wass Sophia but not sure of my grandfather's name, perhaps Alex. She was born in a town that I can only write phonetically or sounds like Matyosz! Have never been able to find it on a map, was probably changed when it became a part of Chechoslovakia. Very interesting reading the history you have amassed and envy your visit!

I am from New Jersey hence the e-mail account name. I have been tracking a HOGYA out here and it has not been easy because he was a ranch hand and those records are really hard to find. One lead is in the Scottsdale area - I am trying to authenticate that. Emilia Mary Hogya is my Grandmother whom married Frank Pastor (born in Perth Amboy). I was born in Perth Amboy too. Raised in Carteret and Port Reading. Örömmel olvastam az üzenetét. Feltételezem, hogy a magyar nyelv nem okoz gondot, úgy hiszem, így könnyebb a kommunikáció. Az édesapám Hogya Viktor Kisrozvágyon született 1933-ban. Ő sok-mindent összegyűjtött a családról. Hogya Viktor (1963.)

Comments: I am looking for my relatives from long time, because my husband made our Family Tree, and I would like to make it more complete.

I was born in Kisrozvágy in 1937. I am three-times Hogya descendant, because my two Grandfathers and one of my Grandmother are Hogya. Only they have a distinguish letter like Hogya F. (Ferenc) Sándor, or Hogya P. (Petro) Anna. My Father was Alexander (Sándor) Hogya, he was born in 1905 in Kisrozvágy, His tickname was Boys Sándor (because my Grandfather always was speaking about his Boys). My Mother Ezrsébet Hogya F. was born in 1903, Kisrozvágy. My Mother mentioned many times when I was a yung girl, that She has relatives in Géres, and Lácacséke. I think my Grandmother was born somewhere there.

I found in your guestbook relatives like Viktor Hogya. I think he is my cousin. My Grandfather was Hogya Ferenc Sándor (1864-1948), and my Grandmother was Lovas Borbála (1869-1942) on my Mother's side.

On my Father's side, my Grandmother was Hogya P. Anna, (1882-1932 Kisrozvágy) and Ny Grandfather was Hogya Bertalan (1882-1949 ?). Both sides of my Family have many relatives in US, and Canada. Two Brothers of my Mother (Miklós and Elek or Alex)live in Canada. They have large family in Canada. Nowadays I have connection with someone.

My Grandfather went to U.S. at the begining of 1900's years. In 1910 my Grandmother with two boys (Alexander/Sándor Hogya who is my Father, and John/János Hogya)went also to U.S. They lived in New jersey Midlesex, South Lake place. For my Grandmother's two more boys was born in U.S., Benjanmin, and Ladislau)László Hogya. They stayed in U.S. untill 1920, after that my Grandmother came home with the 4 boys. I do not know how long stay there my Grandfather, but He also came back to Hungary. The two boys who were born in New Jersey went back to U.S. in 1936. Through Ancersty. com I have found my Grandfather's military card (under name Berti Hogya) and the passenger list of the France ship, that take my uncle's back to U.S. Even so I have the photo of the ship. But very interesting, that I did not find anythyng about my Grandmother (Hogya P. Anna), my Father, and Uncle John. I do not know why they are not in the encountering list of 1910 and 1920, and any passenger lists. They made their scooling in U.S., and my Father worked in a short time in a rubber factory. I am very sorry but they all died, and I can not ask them about this things. Can You advise me how can I get any information about their staying in U.S.

This days I have a few relatives in U.S. and Canada, but it would be very long to write down everything. Maybe later I can tallk about them.

I am very happy hearing about You, and very nice that we Hogya's have a home page. I have a dream, that many Hogya descendant will read it and sometimes we can make a Hogya's meeting in Kisrozvágy. If there is somebody in Kisrozvágy who can look after in the anual books this thing please write me an email.

I am living in Budapest, I am a chemist, and again my age (70) I am working in the environmental protection fild.

I believe that my granfather's brother is the Bernard (Bernie) Hogya who also lived in Perth Amboy New Jersey. My grandparents lived on Alpine St. - I remember walking to "Uncle Bernie's" house, 1 block away. I took piano lessons for many years from Bernie's daughter, Elaine Hogya Hoffer at their home. My grandfather and his wife had 2 children, Steven L. Hogya, Jr. and a daughter Marie - who still lives at their home on Alpine St.

My father, Steven L. Hogya died 2 years ago. I am a long-time resident of Los Angeles, CA.
