I attened Holy Name School in the 50's. One of my heartbreaks, was that I never graduated from this fine institution. My uncle was a city fireman, and was killed along with six others in February of 1958. We moved to Long Island, as the result of my mom's sister, being widowed at that time. She was very friendly with the Devine Family,as they lost their wonderful husband and father in the same fire on Woster St. NYC. I am now a permanent deacon, and still keep up with the Sisters I had in school. Sister St. Matthew, Sister Mary Carolina, and Sister Virginia Maria. Brother Columbanus was a wonderful, holy and kind man. Holy Name gave me the foundation I needed in life. I now teach with the Sisters of St. Joseph, as Sacred Heart, Hempstead. I well remember our beloved pastor, Bishop John J. Boardmann, DD. Years later, we had time to talk, when he was moved to Bay Ridge...his heart was still HOLY NAME, as mine and others will say to this day. Would love to come to the reunion... I am a former parishioner of Holy Name of Jesus Church. I would like to be the sponsor for a Confirmation candidate, and need to prove I have received the sacraments of Baptism, Communion and Confirmation. Fortunately, I received all of these sacraments at Holy Name of Jesus Church. This is a list of the years I believe each of the sacraments were received: Baptism: 1953 Communion: 1960 (I believe my class was the first to receive the Holy Eucharist in 1st grade. Confirmation: 1965 Without a letter from my home parish attesting to the fact that I did indeed receive the sacraments, I will not be permitted to be a sponsor. | Comments: | Wow!! is right. Just came back from the old neighborhood as I had not been back 43 years..Graduated from Holy Name in June 1964 and Rev Msg.Downing was pastor then. I was shocked at the condition of the church, I remember this beautiful church with beautiful murals on the walls and ceiling and the alter was one of magnificant! I could still hear the nuns and bells in the school yard I'm glad to see they still kept the original school buildings and yard. I guess time does change things! |

During and after World War II, I went to sea as a merchant marine radio officer, and much later was in the US Army. Most of the boys who graduated with me served during the war.
I retired as a college dean and professor of physics in 1993. I now live in Summit, NJ. |

| Comments: | I had the good fortune to attend Holy Name during the late 40’s into the 50’s, some years behind the writer Pete Hamill (who later encouraged my own writing). And like him, I also became a writer. For awhile, uncertain of what I wanted to do, I wound up working in the factories of the neighborhood over on 19th Street, and during the late 50’s I spent some time hanging out on the edges of some of the tougher street gangs of the neighborhood surrounding 17th Street where I grew up. But all the while the education I received from the Sisters of Saint Joseph, from the Xaverian Brothers stayed with me, and it formed a foundation which helped me achieve my own writing career. I owe them a lot. And not surprisingly, much of the fiction writing I have done is about the old neighborhood surrounding that great parochial school. I get back there often, to Farrell’s and to past school reunions, but I always enjoy talking to people who grew up in Windsor Terrace at that time. Glad to see that this site is carrying on the memories of a time in Brooklyn when a parochial school education also meant that you were part of a great Catholic Church. |
