| Comments: | Both my mother, Lorraine Cope, and father, James Dougherty were baptized at The Church of Holy Name in 1931. They were married at The Church of Holy Name on May 10, 1951. My brother was baptized at The Church of Holy Name September 1952, James Robert Dougherty. I was baptized at The Church of Holy Name April, 1955, Judith Ann Dougherty. It is lovely to be able to read a history of this fine parish where my mother and father worshiped as children. I am proud that my family was a part of it's history. |

| Comments: | Wow, Holy Name. So many memories and good times. Growing up in Brooklyn was great. I attended Holy Name in the 1990s, and left in third grade. I'm 18 now. I would like to see the site add class photos or have a student name database, so that I can look up old friends on Facebook, or in a phonebook. Peace. |

| Comments: | I graduated from the eigth grade of Holy Name School in January 1939. At age 12, I was the youngest one in the boys class. (We never had anything to do with the girls classes.) During and after World War II, I went to sea as a merchant marine radio officer, and much later was in the US Army. Most of the boys who graduated with me served during the war.
I retired as a college dean and professor of physics in 1993. I now live in Summit, NJ. |

| Comments: | I had the good fortune to attend Holy Name during the late 40’s into the 50’s, some years behind the writer Pete Hamill (who later encouraged my own writing). And like him, I also became a writer. For awhile, uncertain of what I wanted to do, I wound up working in the factories of the neighborhood over on 19th Street, and during the late 50’s I spent some time hanging out on the edges of some of the tougher street gangs of the neighborhood surrounding 17th Street where I grew up. But all the while the education I received from the Sisters of Saint Joseph, from the Xaverian Brothers stayed with me, and it formed a foundation which helped me achieve my own writing career. I owe them a lot. And not surprisingly, much of the fiction writing I have done is about the old neighborhood surrounding that great parochial school. I get back there often, to Farrell’s and to past school reunions, but I always enjoy talking to people who grew up in Windsor Terrace at that time. Glad to see that this site is carrying on the memories of a time in Brooklyn when a parochial school education also meant that you were part of a great Catholic Church. |

| Comments: | I graduated from Holy Name School in 1959. I have always been grateful to the good sistersn of St. Joseph for the wonderful education I received at Holy Name. A few years ago I stopped into their mother house at Brentwood, Long Island. I have a wonderful chat with Sister Grace Eucharia who taught 8th grade. She remained a statue of St. Patrick that I have given her many years ago. I have wonderful memories of growing up on Prospect Ave. Although, I left Brooklyn many years ago, You can take the girl out of Brooklyn but you can't take Brooklyn out of the girl. If anyone from Holy Name would like to drop a line I would love to hear from you. |

| Comments: | Before I came to Holy Name on my 5th year of schooling, I attended Saint Thomas Aquinas on 8th Street and 4th Avenue (closed now). Saint Thomas told my mother Elida (rest in peace mom) that Holy Name was a better school for me because of my studdering habit. And I have to say they were right! They helped me more then I could have ever amagined. My favorite person in Holy Name was Mr. Hughes. Even though I was a kid, he always had his door open to me. Even as an adult now, his door is still open to me. Thank you Mr. Hughes and the students at Holy Name are blessed to have a person like you in there lives. Once I graduated from Holy Name I attended Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. In my freshman year, my mother passed. At the funeral I was suprised to see Holy Name there. This is something that all parents must remember when their children attend Holy Name. You are never forgotten! Friends come and go in our lives but to find true friends that are there for what ever reason comes your way is priceless...... I am now in the Marine Corps on my 6th year and I still remember the relationships and experiences of Holy Name. Good Bless all of you and I hope to see you all at Midnight Mass.

I was hoping I could find parish records on a James Patrick Dolan, He would have lived in your parish from 1925 to 1937. If you have any records of a James Patrick Dolan and his wife Catherine I would like to know if I could some how obtain copies. He was my grandfather and I’m trying to find my roots and I found him landing in New York in 1921 at age 17 from Ireland and Now I’m trying to find him and his family in this parish. I would gladly donate for the cause. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, James Dolan 5329 Godbey Drive La Canada Flintridge, Ca. 91011 Phone 818-790-1150 Fax 1-866-701-2480 |

| Comments: | Just discovered Holy Name's website and am so pleased to read its history and relive my childhood there. I grew up on 17th St between 7th & 8th Aves. and attended Holy Name School from 1956 until graduation in 1963. My faith formation at Holy Name has been a trememdous blessing in my life over the years. The education I received was outstanding. The memories flood back - preparing for and receiving the Sacraments, Sodalities, scapulars and holy cards, hymn practices, going to mass with our class each Sunday, First Friday mass at 6:30am in the snowy winters, the wonderful Sisters of St. Joseph. I am so glad Holy Name Church and School are still thriving. I live in Oregon now and it will be a few years before my husband and I can make a trip to Brooklyn so I can show him my roots. Looking forward to visiting in the near future and attending mass once again at Holy Name. God bless you all. |

| Comments: | i dont know how people can generalize and say things that young people dont go to school. Even if the services were more " lively" I doubt it would convince them to go. You are either faithful or u aren't. And in conclusion I dont't know how many young people will be waking up early on a sunday to attend the 7:30 of all masses. The masses are geared towards the audiences |

| Comments: | I was visiting my son this past weekend in Brooklyn near Holy Name Church. My son, who is 30 and not a regular church goer, accompanied me to the 7:30 am mass (3/12). I must say that I was very disappointed in the service. The priest who said the mass( He did not identify himself) officiated at the mass in a very non-inspiring way. Everything was quite rote with no feeling. The homily lasted about two minutes and was a recitation of an article by someone else. It could have worked had the priest commented on its meaning, instead he read it without ever looking up at the congregation and then rushed onto the rest of the mass. After mass, we were not greeted at the door as he was busy talking with someone away from the door. If I had hoped that my son might be inspired to go to church more often by this service, my hopes were certainly dashed. It is no wonder that our young people do not go to church when they experience services such as what we experienced last Sunday.
The web site is great and it looked like people were involved with the church, but I will look for another Catholic Church the next time I am in Brooklyn. |
