In the past the Frisians in foreign parts (outside Fryslân) mostly were called ‘Friezen yn ‘e frjemdte’, even if they were living on the doorstep, in the neighbor provinces Drenthe, Groningen or Overijsel. That ‘Friezen yn ‘e frjemdte’ shall be the title of a book, in which we want tot describe the history of the Frisians outside of Fryslân in the Netherlands and (far) abroad. | Comments: | Am working on the family of Fedder (Fred) and Heinrich Brodersen who came to Clinton, Iowa in 1871 or 1872. Fedder claimed to speak Frise up to the time he died after 1930. His brother Henry moved to Berrien County, Michigan.

I am involved in this new "form" of genealogy, In doing so I have learned that my male ancestry is likely Frisian. I cannot say how, at this moment I am, nor can I say if this "classification" will endure (DNA-genealogy is very new). Basically, using Y-Chromosome testing, my results are such that they fit common traits among other "Frisians". To answer the previous post, The Frisian Haplogroup is R1b. "Haplogroups" & "Haplotypes" are like ancient clans. At some point in the very near future people will be able to literally pin-point exactly from whence their ancestors came by taking these test. Enough, though. I am proud to be, though I need some more info to find out how I am, a FRISIAN! Anyone know the Frisian word for "Cook"? |

Geneology by DNA is quickly becoming a pervasive form of understanding ones genetic roots, and now with the internet and mail-order clade tests, it is becoming easy for anyone to do so. If different genetically distinct subpopulations add their knowledge of ancestry and their genetic information to the pool of knowledge, you would be helping everyone else know their history as well!

All of my grandparents came from Zeeland and Friesland Provinces, arriving in the late 19th and early twentieth centuries. My paternal Grandpa arrived at age 17, and he never lost his Dutch brogue. I loved it. He and Grandma spoke Dutch to one another, but as soon as they realized that I was beginning to understand them, they quit. :) I "read" Dutch only well enough to research in Tresoar and ISIS. My Frisian ancestor surnames are: Esther (Ester), Jongbloed (Youngblood?), Andree (Andrae), Feenstra, Tamminga, Westerterp, Schaafsma and De Vries. My great-grandmother, Sybrig Taedes Jongbloed, born in 1849 in Wymbritseradeel, left Hommerts in 1891 to emigrate to Grand Rapids, Michigan, with her husband, Tjerk Esther, and nine children. She and one of the children, Jantje, apparently died en route, since Tjerk arrived with eight children and no wife. I can't find death records for Sybrig or Jantje in the Netherlands, the U. S., or England, so my assumption is that they died on the ship. 1891 is an almost impossible year to research immigration and ship lists. Does anyone know of other data sources (newspaper articles, death notices, or anything else) that might help? I really think these people deserve to be remembered. Thanks.

My Grandfather Jans and his wife, Janje had 8 children. My dad, Fred Bus, was the youngest of their 8. He was born in the USA then when he was a baby, my Grandparents went back with him to Holland. My dad attended kindergarden in Arum then they came back again to Iowa. My dad taught me to be very proud of my Dutch heritage. Someday, I hope to come to Arum, Friesland. An uncle of mine Inne de Jong who was a schoolteacher for many years, first in Nijemeirdum and later in Utrecht and Amsterdam was very much involved in the Friesian movement. I am a descendant of Stoffel Harmensen van Zandt, a journeyman cloth shearer who contracted to work in New Amsterdam in 1651. Stoffel was born in the village Kleverins (today's Cleverns) in the Jeverland around 1618. The death of Maria van Jever, the daughter of the last hereditary chieftan, marked the end of the last remnant of East Frisian independence a few decades before Stoffel's birth. I have a cousin named Van Hoose whose North Frisian ancestor (from Husum) also moved to New Amsterdam. And, of course, Peter Stuyvesant, the governor of New Amsterdam, was himself a West Frisian. |

The meaning of the names Edze and Marijke: Edze, or Edse comes from Edsart or Edzard. It is a Frisian name derived from the Germanic Agi-hard name roughly meaning: "Strong with the Sword". (from www.meertens.knaw.nl) Marijke is a well know name in Holland and is also known as "Marije" in Frysland. They both stem from the name Maria. | Comments: | My Grandfather was Frisian he married a German, it is my understanding his family was'nt thrilled but complaicent.
He was always known to me as Walter, whom I am named for. Recently while going through some family papers I noticed the spelling is Woder. The family name is Mink, is this a derivation of another name? I remember sitting on his lap and him telling me of Holland from a book with pictures written in Dutch. We came to a picture of a stately looking man 18TH OR 19TH century garb, I vividly recall his excitement and an stately air of pride when he told me we were related. Unfortunatly I don't know the proper spelling, but it is something like Schmellpennick. I once saw the name and a similar picture on a cigar can. Was this individual Frisian? is it possible that Mink is a derivation of this name? I knew his mother as Beppa, I have family photos of the homestead and a ink sketch. I visited Holland in 1967 and again in 1972. In 67 I visited the home and cousins in friesland. I grew up with Dutch as a second language, but it is a southern dialect which they refered to as Hollandsa platt. I could not understand the Frisian. My Mother was a war bride coming to America in 1946. I was born in 1947. My Grandparents came in 1949. My Grandfather never adjusted very well he longed for his family but did not want to return. My Grandmother did in 1961 for a month. She was content being with her daughter and grand children, and was glad to return. This renewed interest in our geneology has come about with questions from my sons and grandson. I have always had a latent interest, but never was able to connect, with anyone of like interest. When in Holland the people seemed interested only in the present and seemed to avoid the past.I always thought that the reason may have been because of the war. My grandfathers brother was state police. His office and home was in Nuth, my Mother was from Herleen. My Grandfather worked for the mining co as a locomotive engineer, and was active in the resistance helping English flyers back accross the channel. At the time of the invasion my mother and grandmother had to go into hiding because the nazis were looking for my Grandfather. After liberation my mother went to work for the Dutch Secret Police. I see frisians are a very freedom loving people. I certainly can attest to that by my Grandfathers perception and attitude toward the United States, and that of nazi Germany. | Comments: | I found out that my family was enslaved and taken from Friesland in 856 AS, when they were given their surnames by their captors. Prior to that, I was informed that Frisians did not commonly (if at all) use surnames. If this is the case, is it even possible to try to track my genealogy past this date? | Comments: | My name is Brian Frisbie. My ancestors were Frisians who fought under King Redbad at the Battle of Walgri against Danish Vikings under Hrolf Granger. The Vikings won the battle, and my ancestors and those soliders Granger saw fit to keep were forced to declare loyalty to him and to convert to Christianity. Granger took my family with him to Normandy, and they helped him conquer it. To create a society of his own, the Viking took the name Thorfinn Rollo, and gave the Frisians he had taken with him the surname "Frisbie" which means "From Friesland". I am not sure what the specifics were in Viking culture...as to whether or not my parents were considered slaves, or whatever. If anyone has any more specific information on this Battle, please let me know. |

| Comments: | My ancestors (not always spelled the same), left Friesland for Prussia and Russia during the time of Menno Simmons when he and other reformists were being persecuted. Our language is "plaut dietsche", which didn't seem to have been written until the 19th or 20th century, thus, German was used in school and church, but not at home. Are you able to establish any family connection in any part of Friesland? It means a lot to me, and I thank you very much.

| Comments: | I have always been very proud of my heritage, dispite the fact that much of my family has not kept good tract of our liniage. The farthest back I can reach is the Frisians of Nordfriesland, which was once a part of Denmark. They were, under King Redbad, conquered by Hrolf Granger, the prince of Norway. Forced to pay tribute to him, my Frisian ancestors followed Granger to France, where Normandy was established. Wishing to establish a new land, Granger became babtised under the name Thorfinn Rollo, and forced his people to as well. It was at this point that the last name "Frisbie" was established. My greatest concern is, why and when did the Nordfriesland migrate to Denmark in the first place, and did they have a king of their own, or were they only loyal to Redbad? |
