Bluesman "Tony Rio")the original guitar player who in 1979 co-founded "dukecitybop" in Albuquerque New Mexico along with my life-long friend and band-mate Greg Chavez. Greg was also the original singer in "Rosie Palmer" who temporarily used the name "Butch Mueller" as his stage name. I'm sorry to inform you that Greg passed away on Sunday morning October 26th 2008, he was 56 years young. He died from complications related to several strokes he suffered through over the past two years. Greg was my best friend and he will be missed. Greg is survived by his wife Betty and their son Andrew. |

The name came up "KUNKEL" in a client list a few days ago. I always wondered what happened to that crazy drummer i took photo's of so many years ago. The "FRYDAY" flyer on this website are my photo's taken sometime in the early 80's. John is just a year older than me. I was so excited to see your DCBOP stuff & let you I had the album cover that I forgot to tell you that I was proud to have played and recorded with your brother John. The last time I saw him he was in Albuquerque and we actually got to jam one last time, next thing I knew he had passed away three months later. What a terrible and unexpected loss for you and your family. John always loved to play, I remember Randy Castillo and Jon Bonham were his favorites drummers. And just today I heard that Randy passed away yesterday (too much blues to go around). John used to play the silver Slingerland drums he bought from Randy. I hear you're a drummer now, are you using that same set? Let me know where I can send you one of the DCBop rercords, I have about 100 or so left. All I've been doing lately is working and playing the blues, I did a gig with Randy about 3 years ago here in Albuq., the last time I saw him, it's really awful that he's gone now, he looked so young and healthy. | Comments: | Cool tribute, James. I was just running names of my past through Google for the heck of it and look what I found for John Kunkel. I was disappointed that no MAX page came up, though. Let me dig up a memory...
After MAX, and my California years, I jammed with John a few times over at the Georgia house with a couple of different guitarists, if I recall. And then we never played together again, until one night in '91 or '92. He and Ernie Scott both came in to Sonny's while I was playing with Electric Edric. John was into sitting in, but it took us awhile to talk Ernie into it. He hadn't touched a bass in years, but we finally got him up there. It was the first time the three of us were on the same stage together since '77. I don't remember what we played, or if it was any good, but it was great fun to look over and see John behind the drums and Ernie on bass again. He was a great drummer, a good friend, and I'll always remember him. "High vibrations go on..." |
