| COMMENTS: | EVERYTHING'S ALL RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE EAST
Can we, just for a minute, dispense with the hand-wringing and acknowledge that the problem Israel and the Palestinians are having with one another is actually their mutual solution to the problem of being mortal? Of course, to understand what I'm talking about it is first necessary to recognize that it's not love or sex or money that makes the world go around but the fact of death; that what drives virtually everything we believe and do is the need to reduce, to at least a manageable degree of fear, the terror and panic the anticipation of extinction causes us. (If you can't quite grasp this notion, if you have to be reminded that terror and panic constitute the human default condition, then whatever you're believing and doing is working for you.) Of the myriad subtle and blatant ways we've come up with to make living with an impossible given tolerable, one example would be the symbolic immortality we assure ourselves of by the making of a scientific discovery, or a work of art, that will continue to exercise an influence on the world after our departure. Another is the accumulation of inordinate wealth. The god-like trappings great sums of money buy enable us to feel not just superior to the common man, but less vulnerable to the common fate. Still another is getting "high," which is about getting ABOVE the body that we know will one day be our undoing. And then there's our invention of an afterlife. Presenting us with a chance to survive death--if we honor the pronouncements and follow the dictates we've assigned to deities of our own fashioning--it's this immortality illusion that's at the heart of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The Arabs are qualifying for eternity by doing what they've determined to be God's work, which is to make war on those who, ignoring or questioning His authority, are undermining His plan for the planet. And Israel, dropped in the Arab's midst, its diverse culture implicitly challenging the validity of Arab beliefs, provides the Arabs with the infidel they need to carry out their mission. For Arabs, it's not about killing Jews, per se. Jews are simply a fortuitously placed means to a purchase on heaven. (You could say that their culture being, by all appearances, limited in its repertoire of immortality illusions to the resources of Islam, suicide is the only instrument of self-perpetuation available to the Palestinian terrorists.) On the other hand, the Arabs afford Israelis an opportunity to continually certify their biblically bestowed "chosen" status--AND TO ASSURE THEMSELVES OF THE POST-CORPOREAL REWARDS IMPLICIT IN THE ANOINTMENT--by constantly threatening, but never accomplishing, Israel's destruction. Persistently testing Israel's exalted designation but never disproving it, enabling Israel to be embattled AND remain intact, the Arabs are every bit the blessing to Israel that Israel is to the Arabs. It follows that the violence each side visits on the other must be measured; balances and proportions need to be kept. For one side to win, after all, would be for both sides to lose; would, that is, return BOTH sides to a contemplation of the Void. We might call this aiding and abetting of one another's immortality illusions--the cooperation and the accommodations it requires--the deeper definition of the "social contract." So we can engage ad infinitum in the most earnest discussions about anti-Semitism, about Arafat, about Sharon, about territory and occupation, and forever miss the real dynamic of the situation. The Arab-Israeli problem is, again, a solution to a more pressing problem, to what is, literally as well as figuratively, the mother of all problems. And what accounts for the tenaciousness of the conflict is the ongoing success it's enjoying in the service of its underlying agenda. As long as this holds true, Arabs and Israelis will, on one level or another, be enemies. Because for all of the horrors hostilities between them cause, they cause a more acceptable, a more BEARABLE species of horror than the fact of oblivion does. The pain we are witnessing is a palliative. These are not the worst of times in the Middle East. |

| COMMENTS: | THE middle east has been one of the most war ridden
And violent areas in the world. Since the troubles started between Palestine and Israel over 400 000 people have died 92% of these being Palestinians. To date there is 136 united nations resolutions and mandates referring to actions taken or to be taken by Israel. These range from the illegal diversion and with-holding of water to individual and populated areas. To the with-drawl of Israeli troops from the occupied areas of Palestine, Jordan and Syria. Although the Israelis have pulled out of Syria, there is still a small disputed area called the Sha'a farms, which is still a flash point for Hizballah and the Israelis this to date is the only UN resolution to be adhered to. This though was not because the Israelis where honoring the UN mandate. On average 6 Israeli troops where being killed a-week as well as the thousands of Israeli civilian killed. And the financial burden of nearly $1.2 billion a year as well as the strain on the Israeli military and government in continuing a occupation that was bringing no benefits or added security to the state of Israel. So as we can see Israel takes no notice to what the international community think and this can only continue as long as America continues to veto or abstain from imposing stricter sanctions and mandates on the Israeli government. As we have all seen over the last 6 months the Americans have continually vetoed or abstain from votes within the UN security council which have centered around sending some sort of UN peace keeping force to monitor and patrol the Palestinian and Israeli confrontation zones this flies in the face of the Americans position as chief peace negotiator in the Middle-East. Sending peace keeping troops would force both sides to come to the negotiation table as well as bring a holt to the current intafada. But the Israelis could see the possibility of UN troops once on the ground enforcing previous UN mandates for the withdrawal of Israeli troops from occupied Palestinian land. And this would leave Israeli settlement stranded within Palestine, without direct support from Israeli troops. To give assistance, Israeli troops would have to violate the UN controlled border which would be seen as an act of war on the UN. But as long as the Jewish lobby in America continues to have such a large influence on American policy in the Middle-East, as well as the billions of dollars being spent on arms requirement by the Israeli military. For example since the recent enta-fada began $900million have been spent on arms and spare parts for military equipment. All of this requirement has been with US companies. So how can the US be peace negotiator as well as the main arms supplier to the Israelis. That’s like being the owner of a slaughter house as well as being the chairman for the vegetarian society. Death and destruction will continue to be part and parcel of life in the Middle-East as long as American involvement continues. Europe should play a larger part in the peace process but this has been hard to do because of the prevailing attitude of holocaust syndrome. But this is no excuse to stand back and watch the Israelis commit genocide on the Palestinian population. |

| COMMENTS: | The sites claims that they include "people of any persuasion that wish to express their opinions" about the Middle East, but considering the name of the site, I would assume these viewpoints are a bit one-sided. Luckily, I am here to give you guys the other viewpoint, adding to your education...
One: The Plaestinian people call themselves occupied. Well, this is true, but that land was won fairly in battle. I know I sound like an asshole when I say this, but it would be like England ordering the US to give them back the thirteen colonies because it was won through war. It just won't happen. Also, (my source is a bit shady on this, so bear with me if it's wrong) after the 1967 war, the Palestinians sought refuge in other Arab nations, but were denied entry. Israel was the only nation that would let them in. Two: Numbers don't tell all! Along with civilians dying, Terrorists have been killed Terrorists have been arrested (a fact not stated by the newspapers Weapon caches have been raided (a fact...) Terrorist camps have been raided (a fact...) Three: For a year and a half, the Jews have been attacked by terrorist, and Arafat has done NOTHING significant to stop them. He has arrested low ranking officers, letting them go the next day. He has condemned terrorism, but he knows, Palestinians know, the world knows, that won't stop them. Arafat can't even control his own men! If you let the attacked try and stabalize the situation, all hell is going to break loose! Four: At the church of the nativity, Israeli soldiers offered the terrorists permanent exile, but they refused. Now, the children are eating a cookie a day, and the Jews gets looked at! Five: Yes, Arafat is confined to Ramallah, but if he couldn't stop terrorism for a year and a half, what makes you think he'll do it now? Six: The "Palestinians had it first" arguement is bullshit! The Jews had Israel long before Islam was ever created. Yes, there was a Palestine, but no Palestinians. It was only the name for the land. Seven: In a Saudi Arabian newspaper a few weeks ago, (need I remind you, all Arabian newspapers are run by the government) it said that Passover is the jewish holiday in which Jews sacrifice a ten-year old Muslim child! And this was at the same time they were looking for peace with the Israelis! There are many more, I just can't think of them right now. There are some things I must concede to, though... Sharon is militaristic, but that isn't neccessarily a bad thing. Look at Teddy Roosevelt It was wrong for the UN to set up a Jewish state on Palestinian land. Although, we have just as much right to be there as they do. As of now, it's obvious that Bush sided with Israel the entire time, he just wanted oil. That was cruel. *Please comment!!!!!!!!* I want to learn, too |

| COMMENTS: | I do not fathom the upset here. Romans slew everybody and visa versa. Italians, with both aplomb and style, got over it. Is that so difficult a concept?
Now, historically speaking, the Armies with the best looking uniforms win. And the winners, of course, write the history. This rule held true until WWII when the Germans with ultra-sheik SS "deaths head" headgear, fabulous duster coats and a brilliant black-on-grey ensemble with peerless accessories (Luger says it all) were beaten by the Americans in their shabby chick, olive drab all cotton uniforms. The georgeous, sleek German Panzer Mark IVs were overwhelmed by the American's mass produced, crude, stubby, retro Sherman tanks. So even the Gods of cosmic balance take holiday. As for the current mideast contrempts between the Jews and the Palenstinians. It is a tragedy. Well, maybe not a tragedy, but at least some kind of ubfortunateness. I mean, to be perfectly honest, the beaches in Israel are not exactly the French Riveria, and the shopping, while, competitive, can be bested in Spain and Italy. I'm not quite sure what consumer goods the Palinstinians produce. While I have spent much time in Isarael, I don't recall much of Palenstine, We did drive through some of their better slums I suppose while on an afternoon outing led by some American bearded radical professorate who droned on and on about some Palistinian, (i think)social cause or thge like. He didn't know where the shopping district in the refugee camps was and was caught in an obvious lie when he tried to claim Palentine was some kind of legitimate State or territory or protectorate or whatever they claimed to be but they didn't have a duty-free shop. I mean, really, whom did they think they were fooling with all these pretensions of Soverignty and not even a duty-free shop. Anyway, the entire region is not particularly desireable, or even noteworthy, were it not for the fact that Jesus Our Savior was born here to convert the Heathen. If not that, how would Jeruselum compete with Egypt and it's Pyramids. I mean really, can you imagine, "Come see our vast wastelands, squalid hovels, and hope to glimpse a palenstinian street urchin blow himself up in your pizzaria." as a travel ad teaser? And I thought those Mexican's with the big banjos were the most annoying thing one could encounter in a resturant. I recommend you do not over-tip these suicide bombers. Lets not encourage this sort of behavior. The Palenstinians indulge themselves with self-aggrandizement when they strap on entirely unfashionable explosive belts and blow themselves up rather than endure another day of mass public transportation to menial, dead end jobs. Neither are the Jews blameless in this matter. They have a history of being relegated to living in geographic ghettos (Ghetto, translated from the original Summarian, means "within the same zip code"). Finally, free to rule supreme over their own God-Promised State, Isralis promptly allow fashion-challenged, hades-destined, explosive laden, Palinstinian refugees to perform their domestic chores. That is when the domestic help wasn't conducting explosive-aided molecular dissassebly experiments upon themselves in a crowded bus. Bravo for their scientific curiosity but boos for their presentation and timing - key to any social event. Really, all I suppose that can be said of this matter is that it has become tedious. Do these warring parties not realize we are tired of hearing about their quarrels? They go on and on about their historical claims, territorial claims, blood feuds, body counts, yada, yada, yada. This would all calm down if everybody just vacated to their summer villas in Tuscany, the Hamptons or wherever. Sure it might be a bit inconvenient, but hey, it isn't too much to ask for the price of peace. And beside, it would be the considerate thing to do. Civilized people do not air their dirty laundry in public. 'nuff said. p.s. No need to thank me, this was an obvious and easy "conflict" to solve. Try finalizing seating arrangements at the Oscar's. This is a cakewalk by comparison. |

| COMMENTS: | Trygvie Lee, said the attempt by Arab armies to eliminate Israel in 1948 was "the first instance of armed aggression since the end of World War II." It is by this act of aggression the West Bank came to be occupied by Jordan and the Gaza Strip by Egypt. Jordan subsequently annexed the West Bank, but that act was only recognized by two nations (Pakistan and Britain).

| COMMENTS: | The question that is worth pondering is this: ‘Why is it so difficult for the Jewish Left, in Israel as well as in the Diaspora, to present their views, and when they do form a Government, to put in effect their policies without kowtowing to the Right.’
One would assume that Arab rhetoric and muslim terror attacks would share a large part of the blame for the Left's failure to implement thier policies. One rarely listens to a person's viewpoint when the veiw is: you have committed a crime against me, and I will kill you for it. Which, in a nutshell, is the veiw of the extremist arabs. If Arab's want to take the 'high road' on morality, than they should take the high road. If Arabs want to use military power and terror tactics in the fight for their homeland, then they better find a way to WIN the fight with terror tacics and military power. |

| COMMENTS: | Please, do not mistake my first post as an indication of 'my beliefs' on the Middle East. It was done in line with the writing of the late Jonathan Smith.
No innocent Muslims should be killed, nor do I advocate or condone any killings of innocents. The point of my 'essay' is not to get people to question whether killing Muslims is right and just, but why the same people who say 'it is hard to see how any Israeli can not be a target for assination' are so upset when Muslims in America are detained for a period of time. |

| COMMENTS: | In the late 1910's-early1920's the arabs of Palestine were faced with a dilema. Jews were illegally and legally immigrating in large numbers to Palestine, and jewish organizations were advocating creating a homeland in Palestine. The arabs decided that the correct response to this was to kill unarmed jews and to riot destroying jewish property. Read the UN documents regarding this time period, and you will see that is exactly what they did. An armed struggle, killing civilians and militia both, with no distiction between the 2 goups.
In the early 21st Century, people in america now find themselves in a dilema. Large number of muslims are legally and illegally entering America, muslim organizations are advocating the destruction of America, and advocating 'killing americans, wherever they may be'. Now the question is: What will be Americans response to this ?? Do we start killing muslims in America indiscrimantly ?? That is for each of us to answer, but many muslims and thier supporters, seem to think it was ok for the arabs in the 1920's, so you would think they would support a little indoscriominating killing of arabs in 2002. |
