| Comments: | I had the pleasure & honor of serving under RAdm. Charles McGrail USN (then Capt.) aboard the USS Tripoli in 1982. I came across his name on your site. I was saddened to learn of his passing. My own father was a native of Co. Leitrim (Cloone/Mohill). The late Capt. was an inspiration to his crew. I recall his walking through the ship late at night, wearing (Believe it or not) a Darth Vader helmet & cape! He was truly loved & respected by the officers & men under his command. I recall his dogging a soviet "fishing" trawler for 6 hours one day off of Pearl Harbor. God we loved that man. |

On the Gilbride page, I came across a remark that: "Several of the names cited in O'Hart's work were of Co. Donegal heritage and migrated to Montreal, Canada." I am one of these but have little information about my GM whose maiden name was Gilbride, b. 1881 in Montreal, died 1975. Her mother was Josephine Gilbride (1857-1914). I know my GM had a cousin named Grace Gilbride. Grace had a daughter, Elizabeth. |

| Comments: | I live in Seattle and am Grandson of Peter McNiff of Corey Leitrum. Peter married Bridget and children John (oldest and my Dad), Mickey, Kathleen, Mary and Joe. Mary (London) and Kathllen (NYC) survive.
Peter loved his bulls (always had the prize bull) and sold studing. My dad worked in the coal mine and that motivated him to leave Ireland for a "life" in NYC working 40 years for Con Edison. Mickey came to NYC and married a Leitrum gal and.had 3 children. Joe stayed with the farm never married. Kathleen never married as well. Mary married in London and has a daughter. The McNiff farm house is uninhabited and has been for many years - still furnished with pictures but not maintained. Today, all that is left to bear testament to the family of Stephen McGrail are the headstones in St. Bridgid's Graveyard in Drumkeerin, and a memorial stone set at the Ancient Abbey of Tarmon, in County Leitrim.'
Just to inform you that I am a McGrail living near Drumkeerin in a neighbouring town Dowra. I went to school in Drumkeerin and its highly likely that I'm a distant relative of the Drumkeerin McGrails. My great grandfather was a Stephen McGrail and he is buried in Curragh graveyard that you have pictured along with his wife, and his son Lawrence. I know John Flynn the man who gave you the photo. My GF was born in Montreal to Edward McNiff who was born in Ireland 18 July 1846-51, emigrated to Montreal from Liverpool c1861 and married Rose Hickman 1872 under MAGAN (it was a French community and Ed couldn't write). All the children were baptized under different last names, my gf: McEniff, until the name was rendered down to Macken and finally Mack. Ed would have been 9 years old when he arrived and it's hard for me to imagine he came alone. Don't know who his parents were so if anyone can help I would be delighted. His second name may have been William and his eldest son was James. | Comments: | Today, October 21, 2006, I attended the "McNeill Family Reunion" held in Arroyo Grande, California, U.S.A. There was a discussion as to where the McNeill's originated. (They came to the U.S. August 18, 1774.) Some thought they came from Kintyre peninsula, Scotland, while others thought Colonsay Island, Scotland. Your website plus another states the later, Colonsay. Perhaps the McNeill's departed Kintyre for the U.S., although they were from Colonsay.

I believe he was born in Scotland (Glasgow area) about 1886, his name was James and he served in the First World War, as a Gunner, and suffered from gas poisoning. Among other medals he received was the 1914-15 Star, which had his name rank and Army No. on it. Would love to know his army number, I might be able to obtain some information if I knew it. My materal grandfather was a James McGrail out of Coalport, Pennsylvania - we never find any information on him and my mother really didn't know her father. I am glad to see the site was kept up. My condolences to Greg's family. He was so helpful years ago when I tried to find information for my mom. I live in NJ and Staten Island is only about 30 minutes away. | Comments: | I am a nephew of the Francie McNiffe [RIP]whose picture appears on your website. I knew an Arty McGrail/McGreal who lived in the old ancestral home at Lisfuiltaghan in the 1940s and was one of the last people to see him alive before he tragically took his own life. That was about the year 1950. I was 11 years old then. I had watched him for hours earlier that day behaving very strangely as he mowed a steeply sloping field about 50 yards from where I sat under a hedge. He wasn't aware of my presence. A few hours later he was found by his mother hanging from a rope in the hayshed beside the house. The hayshed still remains to this day. |
