Brought back a flood of good memories...riding the Duty Train for Cross Country meets...having a cold Eichbaum bier and pizza with folks like Steve Husar and Lisa Tarr before heading back to the Bahnhof. We didn't need no stinkin' ID! Mr. Campbell had no idea of the debauchery we had perpetrated. One memorable soccer excursion to Nuremburg..we stopped in Rothenburg am Tauber to see the walled city. David Bourbo pushed some local kid into a water trough that was probably pretty damn cold. Poor kid never knew what hit him. I loved my time in Berlin. |

| Comments: | What a treat to see so many of the names I remember from a very long time ago. I was at TAR in (um) 1954 through 1956, when I was 10 through 12. In 1955, there was a Little League baseball team called the Mohawks--the only team in Berlin. We used to play against other teams from Down d' Zone. The next year there was an actual league. We had the Bulls, Bears, Colts and Rams. Here at the Brats website, I see the names of a lot of the kids I played with and against. Ed Maness, Meredith French, David Goldstein, Jim Becker, Terry Reese all leap out at me. Dee Shank and I had a lemonade stand.
I also see the names of many girls I remember, notably Lois George, Margaraet Fleming, Barbara Prewitt, Trudy Galloway, and Sharon Culkin. But I don't see the two people whom I thought of as the class brains--Rufus Hallmark and Connie Baldwin. From Google, I understand Rufus is running the Music Department at Rutgers, while Connie (Stanford Ph.D. in hand) is teaching at the University of Rochester. Meanwhile, my wife Pat and I have retired to Maui. Give us a call, if you're on the island. There's a free mai-tai for anyone with a good story about TAR days. |

I just stumbled upon this site accidentally when I googled "Berlin American High School" because I was curious about what became of the school after the U.S. military pulled out of Berlin. I attended BAHS freshman through junior year ('84-'87), but unfortunately I had to move back to the states before senior year, so I wasn't able to graduate there and enjoy the senior experience. So it was kind of cool to be able to browse through the Class of '88 yearbook and see some of what I missed out on. I have a few fond memories of my time at BAHS, mostly from junior year, including some of the parties at Setha Thavisri's house, Tim Brandt cracking me up (always wondered what became of that guy), and somehow acquiring the nickname "Fresh". I kind of doubt that many people would remember me since I was always the shy, quiet type who didn't stand out in a crowd. My dad was sent back to Viet Nam in '71 and I was really upset that I couldn't graduate with my friends at BAHS. Ah, the selfishness of youth-didn't worry at all that dad was going back to that hellhole-just wanted to graduate with my friends. I remember Beth Melton, Tim Head, Paul Greer, Sylvia Greeney and working the Dairy Bar at lunch for NHS. I met my husband in Berlin-he was a GI back then. We took our girls to Berlin in 2000 and walked through the Brandenburg Gate with tears streaming down our faces! I am married now for almost 10 years to a gorgeous big wave surfer (Mark) and we have been blessed to have a beautiful almost 5 year old daughter Arianna Kamalaniokamakaiwa who is about to start private school Kindergarten, YIKES $$$....yeah.yeah..I know...most of you thought I would have been married sooner, but the Berlin days of being single were too much fun to get married before 33! If anyone wants to head out to Hawaii, call me, I have my own travel wholesale agency and would love to help any fellow Berlin Brats come enjoy the beauty of our islands!

| Comments: | As I browse through my BAHS 1963 year book I recall the countless memories and wild times. The competition we had at the 1962 German American Volksfest Twist Contest, with Phil Lear and his date, and me and my German girlfriend. What a fantastic time we all had! Sad times also, like getting detained on the duty train for several hours by the Russians, when they found out about an East German stowaway on board. When word came down from US Command to turn him over to the Russian soldiers, he was immediately executed outside on the tracks with a burst of machine gun fire for his "crime"! On a happier note, summer brought fantastic bikini clad German girls at the Wansee Beach. Then there was the thrill of meeting and shaking the hand of JFK on 26 June 1963 on his historic visit to Berlin!
.......And who could forget the Raci Bar, Smoakies on the Kudam, and the Wall at Check Point Charlie! Ed Wong, you stole one of my girlfriends, remember! Her name was Ushi! The old gang, Gary Wittimyer and Wayne Taylor, when every day was a party! BTW: No one ever found out who rolled the ten pin bowling ball across the line at Checkpoint Charlie with a lit fuse stuck in the finger hole. I think it is safe to say now that you should have seen the look on the Vopos's faces as they saw this flaming ball rolling in their direction, as they dove head first over the barbed wire, machine guns and all! So many great times. What an adventure and exciting time in life! Sorry I missed the Big Berlin Reunion. I will definately try to attend a reunion in the future!!!! I don't really know what to write, other than, those years were extremly important in my life, and I think of those years as life changing, not just the time there, but the people I got to know while I was there. We lived in the middle of History and I am proud to be associated with all the alumni from BAHS. I was in an unique situation, my mother was a tour guide for the Air Force, so I saw a lot of Berlin. My father was in the Air Force, but I'm not sure I can say what he was stationed there for, because I don't know. Anyway, those 3 years were unique and formative, educational and frightning at times, but I wouldn't change my time in Berlin for anything. |

My family lived in Berlin from 1972(I was in 5th grade)- 1976 (I was in 8th grade in the 75-76 school year.), we lived in Dupell( I am sure I spelt Dupell wrong.) This web page brings back a lot of good memories. Taking trips on the Duty Train with my family and the football teams I played on, Volksvest, ect... I was very blessed to have been able to live in Berlin at the time I did.
Well, I am all grown up now living just outside of Nashville, Tn. Married with 1 daughter ( age 12) and 2 sons ( ages 8 & 3). I am a Sgt. with the Metro Nashville Police Department and currently assigned to the patrol division, West Pecinct. I started in law enforcement back in 1987 with the Chattanooga, Tn PD. I have worked in various positions as an officer at three different departments ranging from SWAT to Undercover Vice. God has taken care of me through some pretty wild and dangerous situations.
