| Comments: | Congratulations on a very fine site on Isle Royale. My family has been going to the island for 5 generations. This season will be my 47th year on Isle Royale. I have hiked the island from end to end. I have rowed the island in it's total circumference several times. I have sailed the island and have been around the island many, many times. The Isle Royale Families and Friends Association is a group, who, in partnership with NPS, is an authentic link with the cultural history of Isle Royale. I am clear that some may be in disagreement with the goals of our group. We welcome discussion about the value of maintaining the original families on Isle Royale. Contact me with any questions.

| Comments: | I have been to the island about 6 times, from 1997-2001. It is so-so. If you hike the waters edge areas it is cool, otherwise inside the island is like everywhere else. Plus the water areas have other hikers?
I know stick to the Superior National Forest or Quetico in the same area, even the Superior Hiking Trail. Cheaper , no long cold boring boat ride that sucks money, same views of the lake and less rules. Jay S. and friends |

We went in late July and in August and most of the nights we didn't even need a tent because of no rain and no mosquitos because of the cool nights. I look forward to seeing you there. Pat Roberts |

went about 50-60 miles (great trip). We are looking for somewhere closer for 2002. Can you tell me how the island stacks up to some of the other National Parks? Is there alot of other campers out on the trails on the island? We are looking to go around the last week of July-first week of August. |

| Comments: | I am going back to the Isle for the third time in
August. This time I am going to do the Minong Ridge Trail. I have done the west end loop and most of the Greenstone. The only part of the Minong that I have done is the stretch from McCargoe Cove to Todd Harbor. That is probably the easiest part of the trail. My friend Paul and I were there twice and this time I am going with another lady. It is a truly beautiful place and the solitude is great. we hiked a 10 mile stretch and did not see one other person all day. Go and enjoy. Pat |

| Comments: | I'm planning on making a trip up to Isle Royale in mid-
August of summer, and am trying to put together a list of necessities. Any suggestions on things that might cross my novice hiker's mind, but more importantly, is it crazy to hike the length of the island and back by oneself? I'm a novice hiker, but in great shape. As of now, I'm going solo, but that's not stopping my ambition, and neither is my mom's expected uneasiness about it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all. |

Bev, my wife, and I got off at McCargo Cove, paddled upstream to the beaver dams then portaged to Chicken Bone. We found the camp site and go set up. Around 6 PM we went out to catch super, first cast and I had a 24" northern, on the stringer he went (a chain stringer). We watch a moose in the shallows and then saw a fin (like a small shark fin) cruise through the water. I said "Bev, cast over by it and see if you can get it mad, maybe it will take it." A few minutes later Bev is screaming " Dave look at this thing, it's huge, it's on both sides of the canoe" I just agreed trying to hold the canoe from tipping with all of Bev's excitement. Another few minutes go by and just as I real in my lure I see him. He noses my lure and I say "take it, no don't, take it, no don't" as I look at this monster I realize that my rod is 6 feet long and his nose is at the tip and his fin is next to me, that puts him at about 7 and a half feet long! Now I'm shaking. Another few minutes go by and we hear this thrashing on the side of the canoe, I grab the chain stringer and pull, to my horror my 24" northern is now almost half the length of our canoe. That monster took the 24" northern head first and was now looking at me as I begin to yell "let go of my fish". It had to be funny for anyone watching, but I was scared, This monster was on our fish and our fish was attached to a chain stringer that was attached to our canoe that we were sitting in! Finally he opened his mouth (which Bev says a basket ball could have fit in) and out came the now very quiet little northern. He laid in the bottom of our canoe only moving a gill plate every now and then. We won't wash our hands in the lake anymore. This is one of those incidents that when my wife gets to heaven she wants to ask God about him. We fantasized about how we could land this thing and keep it cool a day until the boat came again, but to this day this fish is a supreme memory. |

| Comments: | We're thinking of going canoe camping at Isle Royale for a
few days this summer. I have two questions for anyone who can provide any advice or suggestions: 1) We have three kids: 11, 7, and 7. Are we crazy to try to canoe-camp on Isle Royale? Any advice/cautionary tales? 2) We haven't been able to locate any canoe/camp outfitters. Any suggestions? We'd be coming from the Michigan side (Houghton/Copper Harbor). Thanks in advance. Phil |

| Comments: | Isle Royale is the best. My second trip was summer 2000. My
boyfriend and I got engaged just before we spent 12 days on the Island. Isle Royale is such a meaningful, spiritual place to us, that we are going to have IR Greenstone set in our wedding bands. It's great to share such a wonderful place to share with so many people. |

| Comments: | My friend, John Thonton, and I were fishing from a canoe
that we had packed into Chickenbone Lake from McCargoe Cove. It was late morning and we had 2 or 3 walleyes on the stringer. John had just tied into another of the many 20 to 24 inch notherns that we had hooked and released that morning. Suddenly his drag starts unwinding rapidly, line sceaming out. Back under the canoe, then out to one side, then out another. It stayed down through a long fight then slowly came to the surface about 20 feet out from the canoe. The small northern that he had hooked was turned half upside-down. You could see the white of its belly. Then you saw something else. A long dark shadow stretching about 4 to 5 feet out from the small pike. It came to the surface and it was the biggest northern pike I had ever seen. Eyes about 6 inches apart and looking straight at us. Wild and scary looking. It had attacked the pike that John on his line and it wasn't ready to let go. We didn't have a net so I told John I had a short handled gaff in my tackel box. I also told John I hoped that sucker was going to let go because I didn't want to stick my hand down next to those eyes and all those teeth. It sat there and stared at us for about 30 seconds then made one big thrash, released the small pike and dove for the bottom. I quickly reached over the edge of the canoe and lifted in our stringer of walleyes. That was about 20 years ago. I still remember it clearly. I am going back to the Island again this June. |

| Comments: | Great web site. My best friend and I went to Isle Royale
for the first time last year and we enjoyed our trip very much and would like to go back, hopefully next year. Your web site was on of the ones I referred to several times before we left as I did some research into where to go and what to expect. I have also made my own web site with a journal of our trip. I also included a bunch of links to other sites about Isle Royale. The links are some of the better sites I found on the internet. I created my web site so other first-time visitors would have a good starting point to look for quality information on this beautiful place. |

| Comments: | I'll be kayaking on the island between May 26th and June
5th. Starting from Rock Harbor, I'll take the water taxi to Chippewa Harbor and then go through all the connected inland lakes up to McCargoe Cove. After hopefully having a freah supply of food delivered there by ferry, I'll continue working my way along the North Shore and finally to the long Duncan Bay to Tobin Harbor portage. The trip of my dreams for the last decade and I'm so looking forward to this retreat. Let me know if you'll be there around this time or if you've taken this trip (or a part of it). |

trip to Isle Royale for this summer. We will probably take 6 young men and 2 adult leaders. We have all the official information on the Isle and trasportation. None of us have been to Isle Royale before. Is there anyone/anyplace to get a recommended or sample iteneraries for a group? We're looking more for advise on what to do and see when we're there rather than advise on camping. P.S. This dreambook site is great and we're glad we found it. |
