Comments:I entered the name, "Marc Lifshey", in Ask.com and I landed at this site! I see the name Eugene here and a couple of the messages imply that maybe this site has something to do with the new Principal Oboist in the CSO. I was not not a fan of Alex Klein, feeling that he simply did not have the artistic level that my teacher, Ray Still, had. Mr Izotov's artistic level, however, makes him worthy of occupying my teacher's old chair! Moral of the story?: Fast fingers aren't everything! Best of luck to Mr. Izotov.

Comments:As I write this I am listening to Music In Motion. It is absolutely wonderful. The architect of Orchestra Hall was Daniel Burnham. Chicago called him Uncle Dan. My mother's mother was Elisabeth Burnham. For her, he really was Uncle Dan. I have just learned (through Wikipedia) that Larry Combs will retire at the end of this season (2007-2008). My wife Barbara and I want to give him a significant gift to honor his thirty years as principal clarinet. You can see the sculpture at the web address I have given as my Homepage URL. The sculptor is Canadian, Dale Dunning. We have acquired the piece, but it is still in Montreal. CSO people will have us meet with Larry backstage and make some arrangements with him (assuming he is willing to accept this gift from us). I hope we can meet you then. Comments:Your performance was out of this world. I went to your concert in Chicago during the holidays and that is an experience I will never forget. I love the dark and warm sound you have. I know I spoke to you after the concert and I forgot the type of oboe that you use. I am an oboe player from Ft. Jackson. I spoke to my oboe instructor from Fairbanks, Alaska and told her about you and my experience. She was delighted. It would be kind of neat to see you at one of their festivals. It's the Summer Arts Festival that is held at the University of Fairbanks and I have had quite an experience with that as well. Artists from all over the world attend this festival every year. I have had the opportunity to perform with Mr. Barcelona, flutist from LA symphony, Jane Greene from LA and I think San Fransisco?, Joe, can't remember his last name, horn player from the Iceland Woodwind Quintet, just to name a few. (Я, кстати, больше 10 лет занимаюсь у монаха Уданского монастыря и даже преподавал ушу у нас в школе 3 года, пока не начались трения с начальством).

I sing in the Kansas City Symphony Chorus and so had the opportunity for one season, at least, to hear your artistry. Your work in the Beethoven 5 this evening was breathtaking. Comments:Eugene -- I found you online after reading a recent letter from your mom's cousin Valery Yanovksy in Moscow. My husband Joshua Rubenstein translated the letter for me.

My father was Sherwin Janows, son of Alex Janows (Alexander Yanovsky), who was the older brother of your great-grandfather and who emigrated to America.

I live in Brookline, MA, with my husband and 10-year-old son. My mother, two sisters and their families live in the Chicago suburbs where I grew up. I'm also in contact with my first cousins, who live across the country and whose mothers were the daughters of Alex and Edith Janows. So we are all second cousins with your mother.

My father Sherwin loved classical music and was an authority on stereophonic sound, acoustics and recording. He had seasons tickets to the Chicago Symphony for many years.

My wife and I heard you in Chicago last week perform the Beethoven Pastorale and Shostokovitch 5. You're playing was wonderful. I played oboe in the Winnipeg Symphony Orchstra as a young lad, ages 16 to 21, before moving on to a career in politics, journalism and now, as President and CEO of the business council of Manitoba. My main oboe teacher was Douglas Bairstow, still the WSO's principal, also Marc Lifshey, who was principal in Cleveland and San Francisco and I also spent a summer at Tanglewood with John Holmes. Unfortunatley, high school students didn't have the pleasure of studying with Ralph Gomberg. I was most interested in your comments about French cane.

I am amazed at your musicial abilities at your young age.

I am one of a group who attends Open Rehearsal. From time
to time we invite Symphony speakers to lunch at the Olympic
Club.

I wonder if you would accept an invitation to lunch with our
small group, at the Olympic Club, after an Open Rehearsal?
We would be most pleased to hear your thoughts and ideas
about the oboe, specifically, and the San Francisco Symphony
in general.

I was surprised that you thanked me for coming to Rehersal,
when I wanted to thank you for the pleasure you provide we,
the listeners, with your your music.

I played oboe while a student in Montreal, Canada, where I
was born and grew up. I went to McGill University with many
students from Eastern Europe and the USSR. Like you I
attended graduate school at the University of California,
but, in Berkeley. I now have a son, who plays oboe attending
Berkeley, as well. He has to play the tenor sax while
participating in the UC Berkeley Marching Band.

As you can imagine, I have made the Bay Area my home.

oboe, since I am the only one in fourth grade. It is a
chalenge, but I really like it. My music teacher says that
I have good sound or tone, and she can tell that I like to
practice a lot. What is it like to be a professional oboe
player? Do you travel a lot? What do you teach, besides the
oboe? Do you miss your parents when you go all over the
world? I am doing a biography about somebody famous, I've
