The car did not burn oil but it did leak it. My new (ha ha) 85 Tercel has only 120000 mile on it and I am primed to take it to 200000.

Comments:Hi nice to read your page and to fellowship with other tercel lovers. Mine is a 87 tercel wagon. I bought it 5 yrs ago, and it has been a wonderful car. It has 142,000 miles on it, and still running strong. My sister and i have driven this car between montgormery,al and florence,al countless times doing 80 mph without any problem. However I am selling the car because we are relocating. The first $1000 will take it home.

***Please note: timing belt was changed at 100k, clutch at 125k, it has new water pump, and alternator. It has no air, and needs a paint job. If interested Contact me at the email above

Comments: I own a 1990 Toyota Tercel 5 spd, when I got it, me and my dad replaced the old 140,000 mile engine with another one with only 50,000 we picked up oversea's for like $400.
It has some exterior rust and was hit before I owned it in the rear right quarter panel. It's burgandy with turqoise/pink pinstripes. It's a nice car, starts every time, and doesn't give me too much fuss. I wish it had more horsepower, because I have some big friends and that car really starts crying at about 50mph with all the extra weight. It's a nice car I enjoy it but being an 18 yr old I want a much faster car come summer =)

I have a 1988 Toyota Tercel with 194,000 miles on it. It is the 2 door coupe, not the hatchback. She is a very loyal car.
Sadly, her timing belt snapped last week. But, alas, it's in the midst of getting replaced and will live again.
I'm also replacing the rusted out fenders and ripped seats from another tercel that has gone the way of so many before.
Anyone interested in starting a Toyota/ Toyota Tercel Webpage? email me? it's a zero after the L, not a o.

Not only because he thinks that 700 dollar stereo is
awesome (one 350 amp is $190, and one good subwoofer is
$200) most people put 2 good subs and at least one amp,
bringing the total to $680.... still hits really good...
but maybe you think yer $700 dollar stereo hits for 3
blocks... you must live in more like a trailor park for it
to be heard that good... $700 is nothing around here,
White ford F-150, has 15,000 into his stereo... you don`t
see him on here bragg`n bout his head pop`in stereo... lol
and my friend himself got a 600 dollar square Kicker
Subwoofer... 600 dollar Cd Deck... and a 300 dollar amp...

so quit yer bragg`n bout yer 700 dollar stereo, this is
junk... i`m 17 and got 500 into mine... yer how old???
exactly, i`m just saving money for my CRX i`m getting all
done up for next summer... gonna have about 2000 at least,
put into the stereo... including 4 subs...

Comments:I drive a red 5-speed '87 Tercel DX. It's my first car.
It's the first where I got into an accident (head on too;
mine started soon afterwards, living the punk driven Sunfire
with ignition problems. Ha!)

Last Easter Monday it got stolen. I got it back the
following day when me and a neighbor spotted it abandoned!
:( three blocks away.

Sadly I'm considering selling it, as a rust repair/paint job
quote costs more than what I originally paid for it: $2600
Canadian.

Quirks of note: Thermostat panel won't light until I
quickly turn the fan full blast 2 or 3 times and turn on the
radio.

Feels like it's breaking apart when I hit 100 klicks on the
highway.

Comments:i'm 20 and drive a '91 tercel right now. 140,000+ miles ALL
origional. no work done beyond scheduled matenance. my last
car was a pos '84 skylark v6 (never again gm). my first car
was an '83 corolla and it had 280,000+ miles on it before a
bootleg mechanic screwed up the rear axel and differential
doing a brake job (killed it). engine never died. i have
taken digital pictures of the car and odometer. i had been
through a lot in that car. my dad bought it new then passed
it on to me. never had a rust problem though (southern
california). and the paint was the best i've ever seen (it
looks very good no fade and it was never garaged) i need to
start my own site to share my story and pictures so people
can better appreciate what i'm saying. sadly, the tercel
has been replaced by the echo. i love ALL cars and i plan
to make a living in the auto industry ultimately. i can say
with confidence that toyota makes the most reliable product
overall and with fewest defects too (according to J.D.
power). all manufacturers make mistakes
(benz, honda,GM!,ford!, and even toyota) but toyota produces
the fewest per volume of any make. i know i sound like a
bunch of factory propoganda, but its true and i've
witnessed it first hand. i WILL buy other cars besides
toyota/lexus but, there will ALWAYS be a toyota or a lexus
in my garage first (got to drive something when the others
are in the shop).

yeah, and the "HONAD" 4 LIFE guy, name suits you. you're on
honda's nads (gonads, balls, ect..) "4 LIFE". get off them.

Comments:I loved your stories about Ol' Blue. I am the proud owner
of an '86 blue Tercel. It has a little over 215,000 miles
on it and it is running fine, except for its hunger for
rear brakes. It needs a new set of shoes right now. My car
also has many quirks of its own. I have to pump the gas
pedal exactly 6 times to start it up. Five is not enough
and seven will flood it. I just today told my niece that
you know your car is old when you have a ritual for opening
the doors.(The key has to be facing the right way or the
locks/ignition will not turn). I know all about the
driver's window. It takes two hands to roll mine down. The
passenger door will not unlock from the inside. I have to
pull the hood release while hitting the corner of the hood
to open it. Because I've been too lazy to replace the
thermostat, it has minimal heat. It sat under 9 inches of
snow in near zero degree weather for two weeks and started
on the second try. It leaks more oil than it uses and goes
through air filters like crazy. It also still gets 34 MPG
in combined highway/city driving. It's my favorite car.
I'll never get rid of it. I'll just keep driving it until
it gives up the ghost. I'll be back with un update when I
reach 300,000 miles.

Comments:Tercels just don't die. My '93 DX 4-door 5-speed is still
doing well at 111K miles. Cosmetically it looks fantastic
except for a little ding or two. It always starts. It
always goes. It still gets 36 city and 42 hwy. It'll
probably need a clutch soon and the struts are getting a
bit woozy, but it is a good enough car to sink the money
into. Fit and finish were great new and still good now. I
have gotten my orig. $12,800 out of it (yeah, it was
a "high end" one -- ha ha) in spades. Washed and waxed, the
pearl silver paint and black trim/interior are striking.
Over hill and dale, through snow and rain, on 2000 mile
vacations and endless commutes, this car justs keeps
running. One thing is absolutely sure -- Toyotas are worth
the extra money new. Long live my Tercel, and yours too.

Comments:We gained our '83 Tercel 2-dr bronze hatchback(which is a
shade darker from the rest of the car) FREE from Dave's
friend Kevin, who'd driven it cross country from Boston to
Colorado, back to Boston and then to California. He named
it the "Jumpin' Jelly Bean," and we call it "the Bean"
or "the Mazerati" for short. It's ugly, and when we lent
it to my sister to use, my mom and she made fun of it so
bad, that we took it back. They were embarrassed of its
rust-ridden body and window that falls off the track.
Also, the front door only opens from the outside, and none
of the doors lock. The back of the car on the inside is
charred from a smoldering fire when Kevin still owned it.
We are glad to have "the Bean" back. Two days after we got
it back, "the Turtle," our '82 Nissan Stanza 4-dr hatchback
blew a headgasket and has now been crushed in the shape of
a cube. Our timing was perfect. I don't know what my
sister was talking about--"the Bean" still runs like a
CHAMP, and will do so for miles to come. She missed out on
a "honey of a car," and in 15 years from now when her new
one is "out of order" our son will be inheriting "the Bean"
as his first car. LONG LIVE THE BEAN!!!

have had to do only routine maintenance on it. Oil change,
brakes, spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter. Thats it.
Ive put 30,000 miles on it (now has 100,000 miles), and they
have been trouble free. It still runs like new. And no rust
anywhere. The 1991 and up Tercels dont seem to rust very
much at all. Ive been hard pressed to find rust on a Tercel
in that age range. Im pretty sure it has something to do
with the chemical makeup of the sheet metal in the body.
The Tercel is a great college student car... its cheap and
reliable, and they last forever. Im happy with mine. I get

I bought my '85 Tercel 8 years ago for $2800.
I have invested soley in gasoline.
It has been a wonderfully reliable car.
Now, 100K miles later, I must decide whether to
invest in the engine or kiss it goodbye (I think the
previous owner was abusive, causing early engine death).
I have missed my bi-annual rustbloom abatement program
this past spring, and things are looking pretty bleak.

What else dies on these noble machines at 200K miles?

Comments:Your story has touched me. For I live your life. I am the
proud lover of a 1987.5 Gray Toyota Tercel EZ Liftback. I
am a mere 16 year old, I have only had my license for
months. But I am in love with this car. It, like Ol' Blue,
is a ledgend among my friends here in Pittsburgh. When the
clutch went out twice in a row this July, and we thought it
was the end, my friends sent sympathy cards. I, too,
learned how to drive a stick on this great car. As did my
brother before me, and my sister before him (now both
married and approaching 30 years old each).

Sure, my friends crack jokes. They make fun. The lack of a
right-side-view-mirror, the lack of power doors, locks, or
steering, the rusty-on-the-inside lock on the gas cap shield
(which I love), the lack of a trunk release, the requirement
of Premium gas lest the engine knocks...all are the great,
yet sometimes-ridiculed by those who don't understand my
love, traits of the car. Sure it's rusting, sure there
aren't any hubcaps, sure the oil light is burned out and it
takes a quart of it every two weeks...so what? The
interior is still beautiful, and dammit, it's fun to drive.

The day is coming, I very well know, when it will be taken
from me. It will die, and probably soon, and probably while
I am at the wheel. And when it does, I WILL shed tears.
For it is, and always will be, my first car. And no car, no
matter how much better the transmission works, no matter how
much better the paint job is, no matter how much the blue
book value ($490 for my beauty), will ever hold as big a
place in my heart as does the Tercel.

Take care of your cars. Especially Tercels. They deserve
it.

are quite unreliable and don't run smoothly. I would know
because I bought a brand new 97 tercel a few years ago and
it had so many problems that i had to return it. It owuldnt
start up, the heating/ac was't working and the brakes were
just awful. When I bought the car, I thought that I would
get more than just a car but instead I got a piece of junk
that didn't live up its expectation. So I just bought a 99'
Honda civic. It works a lot better and I haven't had any
problems with it.

Comments:You are not alone! I have my own "Ol' Blue", a 1983 Tercel 5dr manual trans with 187000 miles. I'm in the process of fully restoring it to like-new condition. Almost two years ago I was hit by an 18-wheeler and my Tercel took a severe beating on the driver's side. It still turned over, but needed much body work before it could be street worthy. I did some of the body work, replacing the fender and front door with parts from long dead Tercels in local salvage yards, and took a sledge hammer to pound the rear fender into driveable shape. From there the car was barely street worthy, but was alive. Over the past two years, I've slowly fixed mechanical and body problems until this past January when I went in for the final body work. After rebulding the two rear quarters and giving it a new paint job, the car looks like it just came off the showroom floor!! All that is left is to replace the ceiling, speakers, and A/C unit. My Tercel is a holy relic in my family, having been passed down from my father to my brother and now to me. All of those little memories that come with growing up are a part of it. I don't merely see an old Tercel, I see a rich history filled with fond memories and the promise of more to come. Besides, it turns 18 this September--it's just beginning its adult life! I do drive another car, a 1988 Crysler Conquest TSi, and love experiencing high-performance driving. However, the Conquest is my project car, and can never take the place of my Tercel.

Comments:Hi.

Wow a site for tercel Lovers.

My girlfriend bought a 1980 2 years ago, very low kms, and
almost no rust. I is an amazing car - in spite of being
almost 20 years old. Since then I have become a major
Tercel and Toyota fan.

We now have the 1980, a 1983 and my 1986. I am current
looking for good wagon - The wagons are really versatile
vehicle that is almost impossible to buy used in good shape
here in Canada.

Yes they are indestructable and are simple to fix. I have
advanced the ignition timing on all of ours, and added the
oil treatment product called Restore - the stuff works
miracles!

Any more tips out there on how to keep them running?

Because I have been driving stick for years, I can't

I do have some problems though I always have to put new struts in the front because of where I live the roads are so bumpy I bust them. Other than that I never touched the motor yet. I change the oil my self every 3,000 miles and she rus like a charm. I just had it painted the same color this past fall. SILVER!! I like the color I have installed myself a $2200 stereo system in it and it kicks butt!! I think the system cost more than the car is worth now! HEHE Well all I gotta say is go luck to all you trecel lovers and good luck with yours!! I know I have!1

Comments:Hey People,
Wandered across this site noticing a lot of people wanting technical tips or modification advice that didn't include nitro.
Since I am an idiot savant mechanic, I can make a few suggestions (since the Tercel is my area of expertise.)
Tercels were originally made in 1981, because Gas prices were rising, there was a need for economy class cars. The first Tercels are Toyota's answer to that call.
With the first engines actually cranking out upwards of 130 HP, (trust me, that's Engine HP, not end result HP), and a nice old fashioned double-barrelled carbuerator (I KNOW I DIDN'T SPELL THAT RIGHT), it's specific design is to provide good mileage.
But, because it is a carb'd fuel system, you can get a nice 4 barrelled carb for around 300$, and boost that power through the roof. You will need to get new intake manifolds (a 4 barrell carb is essentially 4 single barrelled carbs, fyi), and to make sure you aren't screwing your engine, I recommend that you change those spark plugs (I recommend Split-Fires, I know from experience), the right socket for that is the 13/16 (at least for the 81-83, but I think Toyota uses that standard probably until 90 that I know of). Also, replace the spark plug wires with some premium platinum wires. If you don't like your distributor, replace it.
That should make your car a lot meaner, and a lot more trigger happy.
If you do like turbo, that's fine for you. Seriously, you would be better off with a super charge kit- those are probably double the price of a turbo kit, but they are safer.
Super charge kits force more air into the fuel mixture, making it burn better and safer.
For God's sake, don't ever use Nitro.
But then again, if you just want to keep your car alive (very easy to do with Toyotas), always change the oil as often as it takes to burn it off (add as much as it burns off along the way, but keep track of how much you add.)
Since oil does lose it's ability to protect your engine, simply adding more every month doesn't help it.
Keep track of your coolant, I beleive most Tercels like a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. (Ethlyne Glycol based coolant, but I've never seen another kind, to be honest)
I loved my 82 Tercel for the year I had it (it was a 3 speed automatic) and I've found the perfect car to replace it. (another 82, 4 speed manual!)

Oh well, love your car,
It sure loves you!

of these things? Can it be done by a mere mortal? Any help

want to name him. He is a 1989 dark blue coupe. He also
has a custom stainless steal exhaust and a sweet system.
Currently he is in need of $1,300 worth of body work. I
didn't mean to hurt him, besides $650 was the big bad
caddy's fault. He is SO fun to drive and he handles very
well for his class. He also goes 110 MPH (yes I've had him
going 110 MPH going down a small incline) just like he
says. At one point I wanted to put a larger engine in him
but I don't think I need too. Besides I have to save up
for my honey's engagement ring. She's afraid to drive him
but I'm gonna teach her how. I know my car inside-out.
Oh, yeah, I also want to put a tachometer in the little
hole between the spedometer and the fuel gauge.

exhaust, brakes, put the engine is fine. THe kicker is the
tail light assembly is shot so I attached a trailer light in
it's place. It's a rust eyecatcher, but I love it. Once I
went to the St Louis Symphony in it and had it valle parked
for the hell of it. I got some looks but Phlavor's woth the

1988 four door sky blue Tercel, very rare: a collector's
item. her name is chloey. yippee! i've had her for about
a year and a half and also inherited my baby from my
college sister. in the past year and a half i have gotten
three new tires, a new muffler, a new front exhaust pipe,
three new batteries. the ceiling lining is hanging so much
that it touches your head and blocks the light from the
ceiling light. the glove box is not aligned properly and
often falls to the floor, spilling all of its contents,
when rounding a corner too quickly or slamming the
passenger door too hard. there is no steering at all,
don't want to talk about that, but i have really big
muscles. inside the hood on one of the engine parts
(carborator?) reads the word: TOYODA. yes, with a "D".
what's up with this?
but, i will never ever sell or get rid of chloey. she's a
trooper. glad to know that there are so many other tercel

rubbing compound, wax, elbow grease, seat covers and other
cosmetic things we apply to it, the more I think I may have
to get them ANOTHER car! She cleaned up quite nicely. My
total investment, including car, 2 tires, lube and oil, el
cheapo-but it works-stereo, mechanic's check, various
cleaning chemicals and 6 months (full coverage including
towing, just in case) insurance:$690

I really enjoyed your page. Thanks for taking the time and
trouble. I'm sure you're Ol' Blue will be just fine.

Comments:I stumbled upon this webpage looking for some sort of
fanclub for tercel owners. You see I am a tercel owner. My
baby, "Old Gold". A gold '84 tercel hatchback, two door,
stick, with 231,780 something miles on it. She is my baby
and I love her dearly. She has plenty of rust but she runs
perfectly. I don't want to see her go, but like Ol' Blue
she is on her way out. I will probably buy another tercel
and use parts from Old Gold to keep the memories alive.
email me if you want to see pictures.

Comments:hey, i too tryed starting a site about tercels, but i
couldn't get it to work. well, you have, and congrats. i
have three tercels now, an 81, 84, and an 85. all of em
are great, always starting (if the engine isn't blown,
haha.), and getting me where i'm going (if it doesn't
overheat). my 81 i just got last week, it's great but
needs a lot of work, the 85 is soon to be heading to the
junkyard, need any parts?, and the 84 overheated and blew
the piston rings on the way to new york- but it's a great
car and i'm keeping it till i get the money to put a new
engine in. thanks for all the inspiratopn, these little
buggers won't die! haha. keep em running.

Comments:Hi Ol' Blue
I am also the proud owner of my own blue 87 tercel. It has
140,000 miles and is still going strong. The Zudmobile as
I call it is also refered to by my co-workers as the POS
car. (Piece of Sh*t) but I love him. I bought him while I
was in college back in 1987 when he only had 5000 miles.(12
years ago!!!!) We have been through many good times
together (it those seats could talk!) My wife hates him
and made me buy a newer car (a 95 VW Jetta) but I never
drive that car! The guy at the VW dealer took one look at
it when I asked how much for a trade in? He said "$300!"
I then asked "how much will you take off the new car if I
don't trade the Zudmobile in?" and he said "$500!!!" so...
of course I kept him. (not that I ever would have traded
him in anyways) The only accessory I do have is a wooden
roof rack that I have put canoes, ladders, lumber, doors,
skis, Kayaks, and sometimes my wife strapped to the top!
The story of Ol' Blue is much the same as the Zudmobile
right down to the navy blue seatcovers from Walmart and the
duct tape.
Keep on Tercelin' Ol' Blue!!!!

Comments:I hate Toyota Tercels! I'm sure taht if you're an owner you
can grow fond of them, but I think they suck! They have the
most awful front seats! They're so small and when you sit
in them you have nowhere to put your legs. So far I've only
been in 2 Tercels (as far as I know) the first one was some
old, shitty, 80s Tercel. The other was from the early 90s.
There's no difference whatsoever in the seats! The 90s one
belongs to a friend of mine, so I can't dis it in the
presence of the owner, but the 80s one belongs to my
ex-boyfriend and it's really shitty! Personally, I'd like a
1998 Toyota Corolla (strictly for the commercial it had here
in Canada in 1998).
