Comments:I was just made aware of this case by Scott Lomax, who responded to my email about my niece, Hannah Overton, who was wrongly convicted in Sept, 2007.

My heart is heavy with what I have learned about our justice system through Hannah's case and doing research on it. As one of Hannah's attorneys says, "in the war on crime, there is much collateral damage." Clearly Reyos' case is one of those.

I hope the letters to the Governor have some effect. A group of over 20 pastors from Hannah's hometown petitioned the Governor to no avail.

Those of us who are now aware of injustice in the system must continually raise our voices of concern and petition our legislators for more oversight of prosecutors, investigators, and judges.

Comments:I have just watched James case on American Justice and am disappointed in the justice system for allowing this type of injustice. Why do politics seem to take precedence over justice. I hope and pray for James, and that, someday, he is found innocent - as he should be, according to the evidence.
Keep the faith James,

Sincerely,
Marlene.

Comments:I was in shock by the time I had finished watching the American Justice profile of James' case. I kept waiting for the happy ending - for James' day of justice - and my mouth hung open when the episode ended without one. I am frightened by the apathy and ignorance that James has had to face and continues to face. Everyday that passes without justice for James Reyo is a shameful and embarrassing day for us all. I do wonder how the jury members live with their decision and I only hope it has been as painful for them as it has been for him. Their unwillingness to talk to American Justice makes me wonder how firmly they still uphold their own decisions. Their support for James now, although too late to save him from the hell he surely experienced while serving time, would certainly be an important step in the healing process for James Reyo and for all those who have been affected by his case. I give all my love to James, his family and all of his supporters.

I am glad you are released. I pray you are declared INNOCENT by the ones who declared you guilty.

You have many years ahead. Make them count. But know that even if you are never declared innocent...many know that you are...including Father Ryan.

Comments:I have just fished watching your story on television and it really struck a chord. It saddens me that such a miscarriage of justice is possible; not just possible but altogether too common in the USA. Bigotry and homophobia can blind people to the truth, stealing someone's life in the process. I sincerely hope that justice will prevail for you and that you are wholly exonerated. Be strong and walk in Beauty.

Comments:I also just recently watched the A&E story on James Harry Reyos. This was a TOTAL injustice of epic proprotions. I can't believe that Dennis Cadra, ADA, had the heart to look over the transcripts when he believed there might be a problem. Most men would have made him rot in prison before lifting a finger to help find someone innocent. He should be hailed a hero for trying to help an innocent man. I think that Senator Anne Richards just blew off this whole thing because it wasn't a popular topic for her to deal with and too many people (in gov't) might hassle her. I guess she never thought how many people would have admired her like Cadra, for doing the right thing. We teach our kids that making mistakes are not good but not fixing them and standing up for injustice is the only way to be and in this case the only people that didn't drop the ball were the defense attorney and Cadra. This man did a full 38 year sentence for something he didn't do. The jury must not have totally believed the prosecution since they gave the killer of Priest only 38 years and not Life. I hope they too are ashamed of themselves. I hope Reyos's conviction gets wiped from his record but even with that his life is screwed due to inexperience in the Police Dept and a Prosecutor just wanting to secure a fast conviction.

People need to know your case is a glaring example of a terrible and frightening problem that lies in our criminal justice system. I do know that everyone I know who has seen the episode or heard about your situation believes you are 100% innocent.

Comments:I saw his case on the television and it made me wonder about the justice system. I am a believer that James Harry Reyos is innocent and that he did not have a fair trial. I also believe that the evidence was based solely on the fact that he called drunk and under the influence of drugs. If it were anyone else they would have pardoned them based on that information alone. I hope that he does end up with someone who can overlook that one phone call and he will be released and then can move on with his life... Best wishes for him and anyone who reads this..

I wish you well in your quest for exoneration. And all the best in your life, my friend.

I don't know what to say except that I fully believe in your innocence and hope some day the powers that be will fully exonerate you. You should not have had to pay for something stupid you did over 20 years ago, (making a false confession), as long as you have. As I write these words, the A&E special airing your story is still being broadcast. I just couldn't wait for the program to end before reaching out. I actually feel hardpressed to let you know in light of all the adversity that you've experienced so far. I admire your tenacity and your resolve. Your innocence in my mind is beyond question. And in short. My thoughts and prayers are with you. That soon your innocence is declared, that you recieve a full pardoned by the state for their gross miscarriage of justice but that most of all, that the (dis-membered) wounded healer soon be soon made whole.
Peace and blessings

Comments:I just watched your story on A&E channel- I am so sorry your life ended up this way.

The evidence said you were 200 miles away- and there was NO way you could have made it back. The roads are tretuous, therefore you could not have driven 110 miles the whole way. And the evidence was all destroyed!! Who does that??? As for that, you should be free to live your life.

How they can say you did this because you confessed IS to me very ridiculous. I think you have paid your debt - and then some. You Deserve your freedom!!

Please remember there is much worse things than being gay. Being gay is nothing to be ashamed of. Good luck!!

Comments:Here is are my questions James -

1. Did they ever test the hairs/DNA found at the crime scene with the hair/DNA of the mystery man who killed himself right before confession?

2. Did you ever identify the hitch hiker that you and the minister picked up. Did you ever see a photo of the mystery man who killed himself before confession. Because some speculate that the mystery man committed the crime I wonder if you were ever shown a picture of that person and if it he looked anything like the hitch hiker?

I find it unusual that the minister just drove off without telling you he was leaving - perhaps the hitch hiker had threatened him.

Also James - I wish you well in life - I pray that the years that the locus have eaten will be restored unto you. May you prosper and be in good health. Be proud of who you are.

I will continue to pray for a full pardon.

I truly hope, that the powers that be, right this wrong. I am saddened at how easily people can dismiss the truth, because of statements that are made under the influence of alcohol. I wonder if a straight white man, would have gotten the same deal.

Comments:Hello,

Like the last few entries, I too just finished watching the American Jusitice episode involving James Harry Reyos and I find it appauling. Not even that he was convicted in the first place, but that 8 years later when long serving prosecutor Dennis Cadra, involved in convicting Reyos, articulated his doubt in Reyos' guilt, that there were/are people with pull on his side and he still has yet to be pardoned, is just a complete and utter failure of the "justice" system.

I'm on your side, James.

Comments:HI James,
Like Jean, I too am from Australia and must have watched the same episode on CI as Jean. I also feel terribly saddened by the injustice that i see within your case. It pleases me to know that you are now out on parole at least. Obviously it will never make up for the years and the better part of your life you have lost inside, but it must be a joy everyday to walk out your front door and know that you do not have a large wall stopping you from gazing at the sun, or laying on the grass and just listening to the noises of the outside world that most people take for granted.
I wish you every success with further work on your case and hope that ultimatly you will receive the pardon you deserve.
It appears to me from what i see of the American Judicial system, that yours is not an isolated case, and that in fact, the instances of wrongful convictions is quite high in the US. It seems that unless you live in a state like NY, and can afford very costly legal counsel, you may run the risk of having your freedoms removed by a system that is heavily committed to finding 'someone' to blame rather than finding the person who is actually guilty.
I am grateful everyday that i am able to live in the free democratic, relatively low violence country that is Australia. I know that the state of affairs can change quickly and so i continue to bask in the glory of the beautiful days and glorious nights of peace that I am able to have.
I hope that your days and nights, are a little less opressive and fearful now, and that you are able to enjoy some of your freedom. Stay strong, take heart in the fact that your story is still being told around the world, and is still making people shake their heads in wonder.

I am so sorry for your wrongful incarceration for a crime you so obviously didn't committ. I just saw the show about your case on American Justice. Unfortunately your treatment is just a continuation of the history of abuse and disregard that has been shown by our government to native peoples.

I think it's so important that someone add to your supporter cite information as to what they can do to make a difference. All my blessings to you and hope for your freedom.

I've just watched your case on American Justice and I'm appalled. I don't ususally feel compelled to write or reach out to strangers but your case has hit me hard. I hope you find peace. It is an absolute outrage that this fate has befallen you and that your life has been defined by this crime that I know you are not guilty of. I truly hope that the belief in your innocence by so many from across the World gives you strength in your quest for a pardon. I wish I could change it for you.

That you should be vindicated one day for this false crime you were commited of.

I feel very sad for the fact that you spent years in prison for a crime you very clearly DID NOT commit.

I don't have a lot to offer but if there is a fund that is available for me to donate a few dollars to....I would appreciate the "link" to it.

I also hope and pray that you are a happy man now, back with your family, where you should of been all along.

Comments:This is one of the grossest miscarriages of justice I have ever seen! James was convicted solely on his sexuality and heritage I believe! This kind of crap needs to be stopped, and our judicial system needs to be held accountable for each and every person it sends to prison that is NOT guilty. James is definitely a person who is not guilty, and for them to use a confession given under the influence is entirely bullcrap and they know it. The big question is will they admit their guilt and complicity in this injustice? I think that eventually after most of the time James was given is served, they will let him go and say "we were right; but just on the chance we were wrong we are letting him go". No admition of wrongdoing or wrongful conviction at all...... They are chickensh*ts.....
