My GGG Grandfather & Grandmother were Anthony & Hannah (nee Howarth), both of Warley, Halifax. My descent is via James, Arthur, Lionel (grandfather, born in Halifax, died in Hull) & father Arthur Clifford (born in Blackburn, died in Hull). I was born in Hull 1936 but now live in Wiltshire. Until recently I have concentrated on my mother's family but am now starting on the Bancrofts, so do not have a wealth of information yet. I live near Bradford-on-Avon where I note there is an enclave of Bancrofts. Any connection between them and the Yorkshire Bancrofts? |

| Comments: | Hi Jarlath. I am related to the Bancroft family through my GGgrandmother Hannah C1837. She was the daughter of George Bancroft C1821 from Bradfield, Sheffield, Yorkshire. I have 2 sisters for George, Mary C1821 and Martha C1829. His mother was called Hannah C1786. I do not know his fathers name yet, still working on that one at the moment.

My father, John Ben, has signed this Dreambook as has my cousin Elizabeth Ann! Does anyone know anything about the origin of Bancroft being Gaelic? My mother (not a Bancroft but wanted me to know my heritage) conducted a fairly in-depth geneological study in 1999 and had stumbled across some information leading to that conclusion. |

She married Robert Whitaker in 1830 and their daughter Susannah, born 1831 in Far Oxenhope married Christopher Rawson in 1849. I have photos of them both & they are my gt. gt. grandparents. | Comments: | We did meet up a couple of times Jarlath a few years ago at Oxenhope Village Hall. I'm still in Burnley, Lancashire but have done very little in further research into my late fathers side of the family. He stemmed from the Cullingworth line of the family.

| Comments: | Great site..Pete Bancroft(comments in March 2004) of Cumbria would appear to be one of my lost cousins. His grandfather Jesse (spelt Jessie in Wiltshire) was I think my mother' brother and left Bradford on Avon to move to Cumbria-I would suspect to obtain work. He was one of 14 children who all lived to adult hood.There are still Bancrofts in Bradford on Avon and nearby towns although strangely none in B on A from my grandparents line. I am contacting Pete because he may well be entitled to a small sum of money from the estate of a first cousin of his father-with so many relatives eligible for a share not enough to travel to beautiful Bradford on Avon to see the home of his ancestors but enough perhaps for a good meal.My earliest Bancroft is 1695 in South Wraxall near B on A who might just be a relative. This was a cloth manufacturing town and I possess a shuttle embosed with the makers name and yes it was Bancroft and I suspect made in Yorkshire. Connection? |
