You know what they say about pets adopting attributes of their owners...I am so sad to hear of his passing. He was great company. My thoughts are with you Barb... Miss you!

Comments:Dear Barb,
We are so sorry to hear about Rocky. It doesn't happen to everyone... but some people are blessed with an entity...a soulmate...who comes into their lives and becomes something even bigger than their world. Life is unimaginable without them. Having a soulmate like that is one of life's most charitable gifts... and at the same time, it is one of life's harshest deals when one leaves before the other.

I'm sorry it has happened to you Barb. I have only just gotten to meet Rocky through your photos and stories and from reading the guestbook. She is a beautiful soul and it sounds like she had one of the best mothers she could ever have. In a way, it's better that she didn't outlive you cause I don't know how her little heart would have handled it if she had thought that you had left her. But then again... what about your big heart? No, any way you look at it...it sucks and I'm sorry.

I know how you're feeling cause I just lost my soulmate of 16 years in October (my little dog from Israel). I could never imagine life without him... and even still, I find myself avoiding the paths we used to walk on together. I don't drive my car anymore cause I can't be in it without him... it was his car. I would hate to come home cause he wasn't there to greet me at the door...(good thing is that he couldn't talk... so he couldn't call me poohead!)
One thing I haven't stopped doing is talking about him, and the more time that passes... the easier it is to recount those endless memories I have of him and the more I savour them. Time is most definitely on your side... and so are we.

Jay, this is a wonderful website... thank you.

Barb... our thoughts are with you and Rocky. She will always be with you, you need never feel alone.

Lots of love, Lucy and Stew xoxo

Comments:I'll never forget the day we went to find you a parrot. You knew from the first second that you laid eyes on her that she was your bird. After we brought her home, she sat on her top perch rocking back and forth trying to keep her balance and you knew you had her name.

My favorite memory of Rocky was at the old apartment on Jarvis, a couple of months after you brought her home. I was cutting vegetables in the kitchen and she had ended up on the floor after something spooked her. She walked all the way from the living room into the kitchen, grabbed my pant leg and gradually climbed her way unassisted up to my shoulder, where she craned her neck around, looked me right in the face and said "heellllloooooo!" She was such a precious bird.

Even thought she did freak me out as I knew at any moment she could just pull out my eyeball or rip off my ear, I loved her to death and will always miss hearing her in the background when we talk on the phone.

I can only begin to imagine how painful it was to lose her. She was the luckiest (and most spoiled) bird in the world - she always had top priority in your life and was treated like a queen. She received more love and attention in nine years than most birds could expect in a lifetime.

The site is wonderful, Jay did a great job. After I read it last night I hugged Yahna for over an hour, and actually let her sit with me on my new leather sofa. Thanks for the reminder that pets are a precious gift that we should appreciate every minute of every day while we have them.

Rest assured, somewhere up there in that big birdy-cage in the sky, she's looking down and saying...

"Barb loves Barb"

Comments:I remember the first time I met Rocky. Barb was telling me how musical the bird was so we put on a CD with Mozart's "Eine kleine Nachtmusik." Rocky listened to the excerpt then started singing the main theme on pitch. However, in the middle of it, she couldn't remember the notes so she made something up and finished the theme with a grand finale!

Comments:Rocky, star of stage and now screen, was such a lucky bird, lucky bird.

I was there the night before she died, and Barb hadn't even mentioned the surgery, it was that minor. I was putting Rocky to bed, standing there with her fresh organic fruit juice, I think it was pear, watching while she slowly responded to the suggestion of going to bed. As she slid down the far branch I watched, one step at a time across the next to the cage. Up the cage, across the top and down into position for her nightcap. While still on top of the cage she stopped. You see I had started to daydream and this was not part of the deal. Off in my own world of woe somewhere I went, and came back to find her waiting, head cocked, looking at me as if to say, "OK honey so you've got your problems but this is about me. And I'm not going to finish the show without an audience." It was hilarious.

Another great laugh she gave me was in the kitchen while on Barb's shoulder, she laughed at a joke I made. Barb didn't.

The next time I saw Barb was 2 days after Rocky's death, and I swear, as Barb and I were looking at her dark cage in the corner, Rocky's bell was swinging. I double checked my recent memory and did not believe I'd touched the cage. It was a very sweet moment. And this is coming from a non-believer.

But I do believe in love and she created so much around her. Life eh.
We all miss her Barb.

Comments:Hi Barb;

I'm really sorry to hear about Rocky's death. Some years back I was installing some of your ECU equipment alone with Rocky in your apt. Rocky had been making his usual natural bird noises when all of a sudden and quite loud I heard your voice saying "Rocky NO!" a number of times. I was really amazed at the exact duplication of your voice. Before this I had heard other parrots mimic voices that still always sounded like a close copy. Rocky's abilities were really special.

Although I only met Rocky once on that amazing week I spent with you, I remember clearly the laughter and amazement she brought me. "How's it going Barb...MEOW....Hi Barb..."

He sounded exactley like you. I remember lying on your sofa on my last day there, you were gone to work. I closed my eyes and listened to him for at least two hours. It was like a radio play.

I know how much you loved him. He will always be with you.

I will remember a few unique things about Rocky: She was the only parrot I'd ever known personally and she was the only parrot who had a "sex change" part way through her unexpectedly short life. I liked taking my neices (who are absolute animal-fanatics) to visit Barb and Rocky: They were so intrigued with her uncanny abilty to talk (Rocky's, not Barb's) and eat a peanut out of Barb's mouth. A unique friend for a unique lady.

I hope hearing these stories helps ease your pain, Barb. Take care,

"Uh...yeah" I thought in the back of my mind that you'd maybe installed a hidden camera and were calling people on the stupid/weird things they did. But no, Rocky managed to wait for a morning I wasn't there and practiced her new words. Who knew she was so attentive first thing in the morning?
I'm sorry to hear about Rocky, Barb. I have to admit I cried when I got your message.
And, hey, she bit me plenty too but when she crawls down Barb's arm to walk all the way across the dining room table just to get up on my arm, you've got to admit she's a charmer!

Comments:The Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and earth. It is called the Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours. Just this side if the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills and valleys with lush green grass and tall trees.

When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food, water and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again. They play all day with each other.

There is only one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on earth. So each day they run, fly and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up! The nose (beak) twitches! The ears are up?! The eyes are staring! And this one suddenly runs or flies from the group!

You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her in your arms and embrace. Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusted pet.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated

From the doctors and staff of The Links Rd. Animal & Bird Clinic
We will all miss Rocky.

Comments:Dear Barb:

I was so sorry to hear about Rocky. She was a most special friend to you, and obviously was totally devoted. Birds are so unique in their personalities that you will never have exactly that same relationship again. She knew what a great life she had (even if she pushed you to the limit with her assertiveness) and has gone to birdie heaven admittedly too soon, but with a really quality experience.

I hope that your memories can keep you going for the next little while. When the awful shock passes, you will have great photos and stories to look back on. I think that the only way you can look at these events, is that Rocky was sent to you at a difficult time in your life when you needed her most. I'm sure that she's missing you just as much, where ever she is.

I will give Yoda a special hug and a feather scratch just from you.

Comments:...just got back from vacation.
While down east, I was eating at an outdoor cafe. A guy walked by with...you guessed it...an african grey on his shoulder. My thoughts immediately jumped to you and your buddy.
Memories of Rocky?
* of course, the sex change
* chewing the hard plastic off my car key (that is supposedly indestructable!)
* laughing at Rocky's attempts to open an infant umbilical cord clip (long story)...the only thing I knew that she could not open!
* "purring" to Rocky, watching her head tilt from side to side, her pupils widening
* trying to mimic how Barb said"RRR-OOOO-CCC-KKKK-YYYY", and knowing I was close by the look of Rocky's dilating pupils
* tentatively allowing Rocky to bite(affectionately) on my bottom teeth (as her mother did) and wondering if the Orthodontist could re-apply braces on a 43 year old!...
Barb, Kate read the many tributes to Rocky and her Mom. Tears of hers splashed on my hand as I manipulated the mouse to yet another story...I couldn't even cry. I wish I could. Maybe that would stop my aching heart for a bit.
Brian just could not read this just yet...

On different note, and maybe I am mentioning this too soon...I'm wondering if Rocky would "ruffle her feathers" if you wrote a children's book about her? I know how much you love children's literature...
Love 'ya

Comments:I'll never forget the time Barb and I were watching "The Nun's Story" with Audrey Hepburn, while preparing food for Barb's annual Christmas Openhouse. In the movie, Hepburn's character, a chaste nun, had to strip down for an examination by the doctor -- I think they were in a jungle, and she had contracted some sort of exotic disease.

Just as she was disrobing, Rocky chimed in with a wolf whistle and an appreciative "WOOOOO!". It seemed impossible (this was a bird, not a human!), but there it was. For the first time, Barb and I became aware of just how much Rocky could understand! He really was much more like a person than an animal. And laughing at jokes before anybody else laughed? Rocky definitely understood the English language, and all of the social nuances that go along with it. We will all miss her.

So sorry to hear about Rocky...she was always part of our finance meetings. Remember the very first time we met when she took my earring right out of my ear? (After that, whenever I went to your place, I made sure I wore really big earrings that wouldn't tempt her.)
It's very special to have a pet/companion like Rocky. I have a wonderful cat named Stanley who chases me around the house and nips at my ankles if I don't pay enough attention to him. He often just flops right across my desk when I'm working.

Comments:Barb: I'm in PEI checking my e-mail for the first time in 5 months. I have some down-time here and Reid is encouraging me to come into the 21st century. Jay has done a wonderful job on this memorial for Rocky! What a wonderful way to keep her memory alive. We all have our Rocky experiences to share. When you called me, I was in shock. I am an "animal person". In fact, Reid has often mentioned that he wished he was one of our dear pets! Rocky has allowed me to scratch her head on occassion and I felt honoured to do so. Her feathers were soft and you could tell that she enjoyed it. If she hadn't, my finger would have been bitten! She certainly had her ways of letting us know what she wanted and for how long. It was wonderful to see her relaxed, fluffed out and ruffled. She knew she ruled at home and she knew how lucky she was, too, I think. I remember last year I picked her up at the vet's and I was concerned that she would be stressed out on the trip home. I just trusted that she would understand me and I talked to her the whole time, just telling her that you were waiting for her at home and she would be there soon. I'm surprised she didn't tell me to be quiet. She didn't say a word. She arrived home safely but I was exhausted! The point is we all know how much she means to you and therefore she is important to all of us and will continue to be. I think that is how we keep memories alive - by talking about (or to) the loved ones who have passed on. I liked Rick's belief about the Rainbow bridge. I know my 2 dogs, Becky and Jake, and my cat, Fonzie, are all playing there, healthy and happy and I look forward to seeing them again. Rocky, too. In love and light. Sue
