How about the mucisians who come to play and are never called. They sit and watch and clap politely and never get their pictures taken.

It is so wonderful to hear the fine musicianship in your group. I work in and around New York as a singer-performer for years. My Husband Ted Weingart is a wonderful Piano-Keyboard man. We work together. I studied at Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts and must I say what a school.

Ted's brother and sister-in-law come to hear you perform all the time. Ken and Renee Weingart. Tj

Thank you once again for the enjoyable tour.

Comments:Great web page. Have not visited it in over a year. Who is playing that great rendition of the "Sugar Blues?" Would that be Doug Burnley?

Two other questions: 1) HAGS sent Hamilton Rech to the adult jazz camp in Connecticut in the past. I have tried to email Hamilton without success. Do you know how his health is? 2) The jazz camp in Connecticut might want to put an ad in the HAGS newletter (if there is one). I will look through the rest of the website to see if there is information on how to do that.

Comments:Hi Doug, Just viewed the latest HAGS Website. FABULOUS JOB !!! Forwarded the Website to Annedore in Hamburg, Germany. I will be in Germany in June and I will insure that the Great Dixieland Musicians we know in Germany receive this Website. Who is playing the Trumpet solo "Sugar Blues" in the intro. Sounds just like Clyde McCoy. Viewed the latest slide-show but cannot copy photos. I particularly liked the photo of the "Fred Astaire of HAGS" Ed Weber and his lovely Guest on the dance floor. All the Best Doug, keep up your fine work, Gerry

Congrats on a fine looking web site! If I wasn

My wife, Joann and I, attended the HAGS session on 1/25/04 with two Eks Club member friends, Harry & Jeannine Morris, and enjoyed it immensely. The photographer took a picture of our group which we just looked at on the Slideshow. This was out first visit to the HAGS Elks Club sessions but it certainly won't be our last.

we have as our featured band The Riverside Dixieland Jazz Band as often as we can. They are by far the most requested group we can book. They have never disapointed us with the variety of tunes in their repertoire.I can close my eyes and think I'm still at Eddie Condon's, Nick's or Central Plaza back in New York when I was just a younster. The Riverside Dixieland Jazz Band has helped sooooo much in keeping good Dixieland Jazz alive and releaving us from the cacophonous sounds we must endure on todays radio and TV. We wish you continued sucess and again, thanks for the many hours of pure enjoyment you have given so many people that love good Dixieland Jazz.

Comments:Guten Tag, dough, its me, doc!
There are soooo many similarities in the "career" of both of us, in spite of living on different continents.

As you may have heard already from my pronounciation, I am German. Why did you not march yourself personally through Soest, Germany? We could have met, even if I am grown up in Bavaria, now (sad enough!) living near Frankfurt am Main/Hessia. You would have been a successful soldier in Soest, I mean success with the other gender, so handsome as you look in your photos!!

I started violin at 14 and continued to play it in stringquartetts and so on. Gave me a lot of musical routine.

But at the age of 17 I saw the picture: "The Glenn Miller Story." And saw how adored this man was by his girlfriend and other women. And I felt ugly, had red hair und freackles. So I knew at once: I, too, must play trombone. Like Mr. Miller.

My sister (she lives near you, just around the corner, in Fort Langley, B.C.) understood and borrowed DM 50, about 200 Dollar, to me. And I was soon owner of an old used Nickel Jazztrombone. I had lessons, and soon we founded "Die Landshuter Dixieland Stompers". My father, who returned from American war prison, did not (understandably) like very much this new wild music. He even offered me to give me the fee for public performances. But for those few performances we had, we did not get any fee; and I knew my father would not have had the money to pay me.

So after a while this wise man recognized that Jazz was a music of Protest in these days, and did not argue against it any more.

"Jazz has always been a protest music". I read this sentence anywhere. Maybe the lack of protest is the reason why Jazz is, as Woody Allen says, "not dead, but smells already"? Is jazz just too politically correct, does not hurt anybody anymore? I am pessimistic for the future of the Old Time like you. Some people (not only younger) call it here: Schmalzbrot und Äppelwoi-Jazz (lard-bread and apple-wine-music). This hurts a little bit, if you think of the earnest enthusiasm of the fifties and sixties.

Perhaps the Dixielanders and so on made a great mistake themselves. I remember, that after a certain time every band was eager to PLAY MORE MODERN. And all these nice amateurs tried the boring choruses in BEBOP HARDBOP and so on. With meager success, if compared with the prof Masters. And even among former happy Dixiemen the OLD Styles got oldfashioned. That is our fault.

I went through many bands then, as trombonist and since years as double bass player. The bass is now my loved and hated opponent for the rest of my musical life.

To close this long story: Up to now I have never paid back the trombone credit to my sister. And the trombone exists only as a half, as a drunken student dropped the shoe (right?) into the green waters of the river Isar, at a rafting with dixieland and bear.

Your website has very much delighted me, and I love this "entertainment case from cherry" very much.
If you ever need a double bass, call me!! And send 2 flight tickets, please, for me and...my bass.

Bye bye!

called the Monday Night Dixie Band. We started up two years
ago through the Community College here in Taft. We play for
the sheer enjoyment of getting together and playing our
instruments. We play for clubs, Rest Homes, fraternal
organizations, and Oildorado Days which come around every 5
years (the city's birthday).
Our repetoire includes: Basin Street, Royal Garden Blues,
Tin Roof Blues, Black Bottom, Birth of the Blues, Lazy
River, South, and Bill Bailey. These are all Hal Leonard
Publishing Co. arranged by Paul Severson.
We are looking for more Dixieland Music and some Jazz music
that would fit a group made up of trumpet, clarinet, tenor
sax, trombone, piano and drums. We have tried arrangements
by Frank Mantooth and Roger Pembetton but the parts are too
open and do not sound good with out group. Paul Severson
pieces are orchestrated very well and sound great with our
group.
The group's age is diversified with clarinet player at 72,
trumpet player (that's me) at 55, trombone player at 50,
tenor sax player at 46, drummer at 44, and the piano player
at 26. We all played in high school and college and the
clarinet player played in small studio bands in the 40's
and early 50's.
I look forward to hearing from you and talking about music
that gives you the opportunity to flex a stream of sound
and soothe the soul.

Comments: Hi...

For all those enjoying the happy sounds of HAGS
sessions, as well as the balmy weather of South Florida,
permit me to say this: You never know how joyous the
experience is until you move far away--to the Northwestern
United States for instance. Gratuitous suggestion: Have
fun with the 2-beat arrangements and the dancing umbrellas
while you can!

Comments:I mean this as a great acclimation - you guys are up there
with the "Pride Of
Dixie"(www.intrepidsoftware.com/about/dixie.html), the
BlackEagles (www,blackeagles.com), and the USAF group from
Robins AFB
(www.geocities.com/heartland/fields/4924/realaudio.H\html)

I'm almost 80, have played in a few bands, and so I believe
I know whereof I speak. I enjoy each time I see you guys!
