Help I'm stuck, my father Roscoe Conklin Crouse was born in Denison, Grayson County Texas in 1902, his father was Marshall Luther Crouse born in Arkansas in 1879, Marshall's brother were Pehley(Pearl) Herman, Frederick and Arnold. The 3 other brothers were supposedly born in Gallatin County, Illinois. Their father's name was General Sylvester Crouse who was supposedly born in Alabama in 1852. I have research that showed him living in Iuka, Mississippi in 1870 with 2 brothers Thomas born in abt.1848 in Alabama, Jourdan R. born abt. 1854 in Mississippi. I have General Sylvester in 1880 in Keaton, Johnson County, Arkansas with his wife Sarah Elizabeth "Betty" Armstrong and the 4 boys. My grandfather Marshall left a written note to his daughter and said they moved back to Gallatin, Illinois in about 1886 and the trail ends. Sylvester's wife Sarah moved to Texas with her oldest son Pearl Herman Crouse until her death in 1920 were she is buried at Shannon Cemetery in Grayson County, Texas with some her children and grandchildren. It shows General's parents were born in Ohio and Sarah's family was from Illinois. Sarah Elizabeth Armstrong's father was Jno.(John) L. Armstrong and mother's name was Langley, don't know if it is a first or last name. I have done alot of research and see their name spelled Crouse, Crowse, Crows, Krouse, Kraus, Krause, I guess that's how it was back when, I would appreciate any info to track General Sylvester Crouse down so I can put him in my research. I am looking for info on Mary Crous b. abt. 1818 in NC. She married William Slone b. abt. 1818 in TN. They moved to Alabama & had about 5 daughters. I can find Mary in 1850 on the census in Alabama. Within the past two years, I have uncovered information from The Schwenkfelder Genealogy that chronicals an Anna Kraus, widow of Melchior Kraus, and her two sons, Balthasar and Melchior, and daughters Anna, Maria, and Susanna. The records indicate that Melchior Kraus, husband of Anna, was born about 1671 in Silesia, Germany, and died 28 May 1733, in Haarlem, Holland. He was buried on 2 June 1733. Anna Heidgrig and Melchior Kraus were married 18 Nov 1704 in L. Harpersdorf, Silesia, Germany.
The Schwenkfelder Genealogy states that Anna's son, Melchior, was of unsound mind and died 16 Sep 1779. After reading this statement, I believed that this could not be our Melchior. After discussions with other genealogists and theologians, I learned that individuals who "strayed from the fold," were most often referred to as "of unsound mind," because they no longer believed as they did. As to the 1779 year of death, I think that a 4 (49) was misinterpreted as a 7 (79). I am much more inclined to recognize this Melchior Kraus as our ancestor than the Malchi Grous who arrived 3 Sep 1739, on the Friendship. Would like to hear from others regarding this issue. | |

My grandmother was a Kroeze and going back in time the name became Kroese, Croese, Crouse. These families lived in the Netherlands, but came from Germany, a place called Neuenkirchen. Joest Crouse was born in 1605, he had 3 sons, Joest 1635,Cornelis 1638 and Mees Joesten 1640. This is how far I was able to get back and ofcourse I have names after that.
Geert Crouse who was born in Neuenkirchen married in the Netherlands ith Aaltje Jans. They had a son called Geert Geerts Kruise!! (Note the name change) They had 2 daughters called !!! Anngjen Geerts and Hindrikje Geerts.I don't know why they dropped the Crouse surname. I don't know if this is of interest to you, but it may give you a new lead. I live near the Crouse Schoolhouse and homestead in Rogersville, PA. I have traced my Crouse's back to Nicholas Crouse (1739) who served in the Revolutionary War. Our Crouses settled in Carlisle, PA, near Lancaster, and some then moved to soutwestern PA and then Ohio.

I am trying to trace the family line of my late Father-in-Law, Solomon Theodorus Crouse, but it is very difficult as he died a couple of years ago and my husband never knew his grandparents or can recollect their names. According to my recollection from stories from my late mother-in-law) is that 2 Crouse brothers emigrated from Germany to South Africa. The eldest never got married, but the youngest married a South African girl. They were my Father-in-Law's grandparents. Hope anybody can help with a bit of information. | |

Hi I'm another Crouse tracing the family tree. I beleive I am a descendant of MELCHIOR KRAUS as well, through Johann Wendall-Andrew-Edwin -Squire-my great grandfather.I just recently received Squire's death certificate. It states Squire's mothers name was LUCY GORDON. I'm looking for the marriage certificate now between Lucy and Edwin. This would prove the family line, because Edwin was from Andrew. If anyone has any further defining info, I would like to hear from you. OR if there are any other interesting CROUSE facts please let me know!

My father was R.E. Crouse, Sr.; Grandfather, James Mathias Crouse; GGrandfather was Henry A. Crouse. These are buried in Good Hope Cem., near Dyer, TN. Recently, an old family Bible has fallen into my hands. Interestingly, for much of the family history, the surname spelling was "Crous" (no "e"). Then at a time period, the spelling included the last letter. The most exciting find is the original marriage certificate of Henry A. and Isabelle McCullough Crouse. It is very old and quite fragile. Anyway, I hope this helps dispel some of what could be mixed up ancestry I have seen on the net. | |
