I've known Atomic Rooster since 2007, and I have to say that I love to hear what Vincent Crane do on the piano, keyboard, hammond, whatever...
Atomic Rooster is one of the best bands of the world, I don't know how it's not well-known these days...

Well, my point is show you (if you didn't know yet) that that's a lot of people in the world who still enjoy and love Vincent Crane and Atomic Rooster.

I'm 18 and it's pretty sad thinking that I didn't live the time Vincent Crane was alive...

My condolences...
Kisses!

Comments:Greetings,
I have been a big fan of Atomic Rooster since 1979, when i first heard Death Walks Behind You. I consider myself to be one of their biggest Canadian fans-especially the early recordings. I have never seen them live,unfortunately-they have never toured Canada,as far as i know. I wanted to share with you a unusual occurrence related to a former member of the band, that being guitarist Steve Bolton. In the late 1980-s, i was in downtown Ottawa,Canada, and lo and behold, who do i see walking down the street in front of me, but Steve Bolton!
Unusual, as the link with Atomic Rooster and Ottawa is negligable at best, but there he was. He seemed to be in a hurry, so i decided not to introduce myself, and we both got on with our days. Something i will always remember, though.

The early work with Carl palmer and Paul hammond is amazing. It is ironic that they did not develop major international superstar status. they deserved it. I believe one day this music and lyrics of Atomic Rooster will resurface to a whole new generation of fans

Name: Kent Hambrick
E-mail address: brobass@fourhambricks.com
Comments:Jennie: My name is Kent Hambrick. If you look on the Band Bio page of your Atomic Rooster tribute site, under the Lost Years moniker, you will see me in the picture. I am sitting in the second row, second from the left, beard, dark clothes, hands crossed. 32 years ago, I was the American bassist (played both Fender and upright acoustic) Vince chose for the ill-fated Taro Rota project. I don't know what made me think of Atomic Rooster after all these years, or why I googled it, but I'm glad you put up the site because the memories are flooding back.

I was and still am basically a jazz and classical musician. In 1975-76, I was living in London studying bass and playing a duo gig with a piano player in a rather seedy club in Soho called, "Club Belles de Nuit" featuring waitresses in "see-through diaphanous gowns" and a transvestite stripper called "Rital" -- that's a whole other story, but suffice it to say, my piano player left the gig and I got a bunch of names of potential replacements from a friend. One of these was Vince, who played 1/2 the week (the other 1/2 was played by Brian Gascoigne, brother of Bamber). I had no idea who Vince was or anything about his background as a pretty famous UK rock musician. He amused us at breaks by performing sleights of hand such as running a 50p coin through his fingers, back and forth while smoking a cigarette with the other hand and messing around with the Tarot cards. I was making Vince play Bill Evans music and standards and urging him to adopt a swing feel - quite weird, now that I think back on it. I think the idea for the Rooster Road Show grew out of this experience because the concept for the band was to double every part with rock and jazz players. My pal Pete Pipkin (he's the guy standing in the white suit on the far right of the picture) was to be the jazz drummer. The guy in the picture sitting on the floor next to Steve "White Man" Waller was the rock drummer; don't remember much about him except that he was mad for Kentucky Fried Chicken ('It's the skin, the skin!"). After Belle de Nuit gig ended, Vince called me up and this whole Tarot Rota thing got started, sort of from top down, meaning instead of working on the music, rehearsing, etc. we started with publicity. I remember the day the pic you posted was made at a posh photo studio in the West End. Oddly, Helen Mirren (then a young actress in a show about a failed Cambridge rock band) was there and I am sure she posed with us for a couple shots. Boy would I like to see those! Also, the photographer made individual photos of us; Vince showed me mine, but never gave me a copy. I was wearing some sort of silver neck scarf as I recall. I'd love to see that one too, if you have it. Anyway, I remember many long tube rides out to Leytonstone to Vince's house and I am pretty sure you were living there too, am I right? In addition to the music project, Vince was digging up his backgarden to make it a Japanese meditiation garden complete with water fall, etc. We all traipsed off to High Wickham one day to Rick Wakeman's giant "studio" - a big empty warehouse - to rehearse. We played a little, but nothing too serious was happening. Next thing I know, we were in Essex Music studios (Great Poland Street) to record the Tarot Rota suite. Nobody had any charts or really any idea what it was supposed to sound like, and after hours of sound checks, nothing much was getting done. I think Mike Finesilver was the engineer - a VERY patient guy. Anyway, Vince started playing solo piano just to warm us up a bit and get things going. He's going along working up some riff, and then he abruptly starts playing the old standard, "Misty," then he's pounding the piano harder and harder, finally he started trying to pull the keys out of it. At that point, the studio manager rushed in and pulled him off the instrument and we all went home not knowing what to think. I believe I talked to you the next day asking what was going on and you said, "Vince has gone to book the Queen Mary for your American tour." QM was, of course, at that time as it is now, moored permanently in Long Beach CA, a floating hotel. Shortly after that I learned that Vince had been hosptalized. I never saw him again. I ran out of funds and had to return to the USA not long after that.

I still have a cassette tape of Vince playing the Tarot Rota suite solo. It's probably the same one that you mentioned in your website, but I'd be happy to convert it to digital and send you a copy for your collection, if you'd like. If you have any more pictures from the 1975-76 era, I'd love to see them. Also, some of the links on the website (e.g. Mike Finesilver's memories) are dead. Don't know if that can be fixed, but I'd love to hear more about those days. I still can't believe I was a part of it. For a while in the late 1970s, I used to tell people the stories, but I stopped because it was clear that no one believed me! Any documentary proof that I was apart of the Road Show would greatly help to rehabilitate my credibility!

Hope you are well.

Regards,

Kent

This propted me to check the web for more info and i found this site and others. Vincent is one of the most under rated musicians ever i feel. People always (quite rightly) rave about John Lord or Rick Wakeman etc but not so many go on to rave about Vincent Crane who was just as good if not better than many of his peers. He left us all a lot of great music and is sadly missed and will never be forgotten by fans all over the world. The track VUG especially just blows me away , RIP Vincent. Love to you Jeannie. Now I'm 51 (!): in the beginning of Seventies, when I was an italian high school student (and a young and a no/professional keyboards musician in local bands, here in Liguria), I listened all the time those rock and progressive records, and Atomic Rooster's LP "Death walks behind you" (with that W.Blake's cover, a painter that at this time I didn't know absolutely, I discovered him many years after.....now my official job is teaching History of Arts in an High School of Arts in Imperia, here in Italy....) was my inspiration. Vincent Crane was a real genius to me, a great musical inspiration and an interesting human personality.
Thank you Vincent.

Wow! I was driving down the road the other day and "Sleeping for years" just pops in my head, after 28 years! I was an american living in Norway (72-76) and I think I spent all my time listening to whatever I could get my hands on, not too much TV there at the time so what better to do than read and listen to music. Well, SFY got my mind on Vug, and Death walks behind you and so on, I found myself buying the CD and reliving just how good that music is, I can't wait for it to arrive in the post. My next move was obviously to find out what happened to Atomic Rooster, thank heaven for the web!
Thanks for taking the time to put this together and keep the memory alive; It's nice to have a piece of my past back again!

Comments:Hi I played alto with Vincent and Arthur. I first met Vincent when he was round at Mary Crampton's in S Kensington and played with him in the Vince Crane Combo with Binkie MacKenzie bass and Gordon Hadler drums we later backed Arthur Brown on a gig in Brighton and I was offered the gig touring Scotland but I had young family. Incidenaly Binkie was a very nice and niave young black kid who was a virtuoso on the fender bass. Tragically he was shopped by his father(who was a string jazz bass player) and sent down for possesion of canabis. I saw him again when he came out of prison and he was totally changed. He came round our place in Acton and refused to sit down. Later he flipped out and killed his father and was put in Broadmoor.
Originally I played with a good but obscure R&B band called Hogsnort Rupert and the Good Good band based in Windsor. We played in Sheffield alot in the early 60,s, driving up from London and sleeping on Peter Stringfellows floor. We were a rated band according to Dick Pountain who came from Chesterfield and who I was to get to know some years later, and the young Joe Cocker came to hear us.
I saw Arthur at his birthday last year and later painted the outside of his new wifes house while they were away. Before that I unexpectedly recorded a track with him after I got back in touch after a long time.I have always been in touch with Mike Finesilver who wrote "Fire" for Arthur. Until 3 years ago I was living in Newcastle now I am back in London. I haven't hung up my horn yet but am at present more involved in left-wing politics.
Arthur told me about the website but I have only just got round to it.
I was sorry to miss the funeral but nobody new where I was.
Please get in touch if you want more history.

that "Magical & Mystic" time when music was on the brink of
evolution to God only knows where! I loved the Rock/ Jazz/
Classical fusions of Yes, ELP and of course Atomic Rooster.
Of course, here in San Diego, where I grew up, No one
appreciated them as much as I did apparently, I heard their
first LP before I was drafted in 72 and then "In hearing
of" while I was stationed in Belgium.(and no, I didnt kill
anybody....I was a medic! peace&love Y) I learned to play
the piano a lil bit and to this day.......the two of maybe
ten songs I still know from those days is "Tommorow Night"
& "Nobody Else"(which is still my favorite). I'm sorry that
I hadn't even know about Vincent's or Paul's death till I
bought this computer and typed in AR's website! I wish to
extend my much belated sorrow for the death of your husband
and a truly gifted man and thank you for preserving his
memory so that old rockers such as I can wax nostalgic over
those magical years when the music was fresh and powerful!
I wept when I read that Vincent was suffering from Bipolar
Disorder or Manic depression. You see, my 18 year old
daughter also suffers from this terribly crippling disease
and I know personally how those afflicted suffer the
tortures of the damned in their own heads. I again want to
thank you and in writing you.....somehow I feel that I too
was able to say thanx to Vincent and the rest of Atomic
Rooster for the musical experience and joy he gave & is
still giving. May God Bless & keep you Jeannie, Michael

Comments:Jeannie...How wonderful it is that these things can be
preserved. I have been a huge fan since the Arthur Brown
days. Best of luck. If you need any graphics for your sites
let me know...I would love to do it for his memory.

the broken link back at my site. The perils of WYSIWYG
editors? A quick visit into Notepad sorted that one out.

Kind regards,
