| Comments: | Love your sight. love your Berners. I lost 2 of my babies this year. Bonnie my girl just turned 10 when lymphoma took her to the bridge. She had survived hemagiosarcoma of the spleen with the only treatment was a spleenectomy. She was a miracle all her vets and oncologist could not believe she had survived such a horrible cancer. But this March 2012 a sore showed up on her side and biopsy was lymphoma. we tried chemo it would start to disappear and then back with a vengeance. So it was decided to stop treatment. She died in my arms July 7, 2012. She was so special. Her son, Fergus always had GI problems. But after his mother (Bonnie) passed he started to loose weight, have episodes of gastritis and consistent vomiting.... his weight went from 80 pounds in July to 55 in October. He was diagnosed with megaesophagus and we immediately started the regimen for this diagnosis. He got aspiration pneumonia, he got weaker, we had a feeding tube inserted but he continued to fail. We had him go to the bridge to see his mommy October 17, 2012. Our house is now quiet. The bed is empty and we are trying to manage life without them. Someday we will have a Berner in our home again. |

| Comments: | I was looking at your web site yesterday, and I came across the poem "MAKING THE FINAL DECESION TO SAY GOODBYE", and the beautiful photo of your dog, SIMMY. I could not have found it at a more appropriate time; My sister's Bernese, BAGHIRA, was diagnosted with cancer less than two months ago, and she was "released" from this earthly home yesterday morning. This poem, and your stories were a blessing to us, especially my sister, as she was alone when the time came, but I rushed to be with her. I tried to download and print the picture and the poem, but could not do so. I did manage to print the poem, but it isn't beautiful, like yours! could you tell me where you got the poem and/or how to make a tribute similar to yours. Thank you for this website. |

| Comments: | Jean, We first ran across your web page a year ago and have enjoyed staying abreast as to the chronicling of your gang. As current canine parents of three Berners (one rescued), a rescued St. Bernard and two cats, we feel some commonality in your love of God's creatures. We likewise know the heartbreak that comes with the loss of members of our gang as well. Over time as each one of our children grew up, completed college and married, we found ourselves filling the void with an additional four legged member. We've enjoyed the companionship, antics and memories of rescued members: Springer Spaniel(15 years), Great Pyrennes (11 years), three previous cats and most recently the passing of a rescued Berner(6years), that had endured many physical maladies that one would never know she had unless living full time with her. Though her time with us was short (2 years), every day she managed to present us a new adventure, some bad, some good but all having made us better as human beings and none with regrets for having lived them. Our love of the Bernese Mountain Dog, their temperment, companionship, love and devotion at times finds us hard pressed to truely put into words our heartfelt feelings. Your site gives us great cause to "paws", reflect and smile remembering all the fond memories, companionship and love we've encountered with our gang past and present. Many thanks for your taking the time to share with others your gang, past and present and a brief glimpse of them in pictures. Count on us as continual visitors to your site, enjoying your heart warming words, love and devotion to your gang! All the best from the Martin gang to yours! |

He is a very big boy and we call him our gentle giant as well! I dread when the time comes for our boy to cross the bridge. He is so good with all of our grandchildren and any company that comes to visit. A Berner is such a special member of the family! I am so sorry for your loss. Lovingly, Joanne and Max |

I raise bernese in southern California and truely love the breed! We have horses and many other types of livestock here. Wish for a berner person to be a friend. The berner club local is not very friendly and I have not joined due to that fact. We are country people that put our dogs to work and play with us! We do have a few litters each year forwhich I am totally in awe of them as puppies! You take care and God bless if you come to the US please try and visit. Grace |

| Comments: | Dear B'racha, I had not realised that MH was so very rare in humans and am just very happy that the research currently being done for our Bernese Mountain Dogs will in the long term benefit those cancer patients too. >The laboratory of Dr. Elaine Ostrander and colleagues Dr. Heidi Parker and Dr. Nate Sutter) of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is conducting a study of Malignant Histiocytosis (MH) in Bernese Mountain Dogs. The goal of this study team is to find variation in genes associated with MH. This is an inspiration to us all that research is now being done to help us all. Your daughter's death to this cancer when she was still so very young is tragic but we all do our best to help further fund and promote the research that one day will end this heartache. | Comments: | Thank you Jean, for your website and links, and the info on research, participating labs, and those who are helping with the funding. Because MH is so rare in humans (Shera, my daughter was supposedly the 151st reported case in humans) I never expected any research; monies were better spent on more common diseases and I was comfortable with that as long as few suffered. But it seems that is not true; it is heart breaking to learn that this horridly ugly cancer attacks our companions as well, your Bernese in particular. I cannot imagine the huge hearts, and the strength, that you and others with this beautiful dog must have, but I do know that your lives can only be a blessing, and an example. Thank you, B'racha |

| Comments: | Hi Margret, It's Sue Wilkinson who actually owns Willow, I had posted the pics to the Friends Gallery on my Longlease Site, you will see I just posted some more pics a little while ago. http://bernese.biz/friend2WillowNormyn.htm Love Jean XXXXXXXXX Thu Jan 19, 2006 9:05 pm Susan Wilkinson" Some of you may recall that back the first of November I wrote to the list about Wolle's contribution to finding Willow. She ran off when her collar broke when she spooked while out for a walk. Thankfully, after 3 days of wandering she was found safe & sound. Willow has been at ur clinic since being seized back in July. She decided early on that I was her special human and Wolle is her idol. Well, she's still at the clinic, but not for long! All the legal hurdles have been cleared and I am thrilled to report that on Saturday afternoon she will be coming home with me!!!! I'm now in a position to share more of Willow's story. She was smuggled into Canada as a young puppy (rumour is that she came from an Oklahoma broker/breeder). Her erstwhile owners fed her a diet of raw hamburger, exclusively. Not surprisingly she developed metabollic bone disease and ended up with a fractured front leg. The leg was inappropriately treated (kind of splinted ccasionally .....). That's how she came to be seized & brought to the clinic I work at. She was only 5 mos. old at the time, skin & bones, crooked limbs, had babesia & erhlichia, and had been living with a fractured leg for at least 2 mos. You can imagine what we'd all like to do to these people!!! After a month of careful diet and treatment she finally was healthy enough and showed enough bone on x-ray to allow proper fracture repair, although even then it was difficult placing the screws as the bones were still spongey in places ...... Thankfully, the repair held and has healed very well, her leg will always be crooked but it's sound and strong. Around the end of October she developed hind limb lameness and x-rays showed some microfractures of her vertebrae. Again, this lovely girl has healed!! Since being spayed just before Christmas she has sprouted up a good 4 inches and gained 20 lbs. Since being lost and found, Willow's personality has really blossumed. Before she would only really interact with me and one other staff member -- now she is very outgoing and happy to play with anybody willing to join her games. She retrieves toys better than Devyn the spaniel! You get the sense that she was very happy to have come "home". But she still saves her best greetings and sillies for me!! My boss had said right from the get-go that he would adopt Willow as soon as it was allowed. He was there when lost Willow was captured and witnessed her raptures of joy when she saw me ...... It was a week later that we were talking and a staff member was telling him how Willow had been playing with Wolle & me the night before. He looked pained for a moment and then said in a very soft voice "well maybe she should go home with Sue ....." WHEW! I'd been trying to figure out a way to broach the subject myself and now it was out in the open!! We set the wheels in motion and it was just yesterday that the official permit arrived. The twist here (have I kept you guessing?!) is that Willow is not an ordinary dog -- she's exceptionally special as she's a full-fledged Timber Wolf!! It is my greatest joy and yet regret that Willow is coming to live with me -- sadly, she is not a candidate for rehabilitation and release so is destined for a life of captivity. She is FAR too socialized to even interact with other captive wolves. So I will do the best with our makeshift pack to provide her with the best life possible ....... She also isn't really a candidate for house wolf status either -- she's a one-wolf wrecking crew! although she will be able to come in under strict supervision (and likely a tether to me!). For the rest of her time I have constructed a large compound for her complete with 3 separate den areas and 3 shade trees; plus she'll have supervised access to both my 40x70' and 1 acre fenced dog yards. I can't wait to see her running relatively free!!! She races the length of the clinic hallways now, but that's woefully inadequate for her and poor footing besides (Wolle tries to play tag with her but is cautious on the tiled floor, so he usually lies down and wrestles & plays tug). And smart!! one 10 min. session with the clicker and I have a wolf sitting in heel position and offering me downs -- both of which she figured out all by herself to see what would get her more liver treats. A few times I've had her loose in the clinic at lunchtime and a client has come in, remarked on the polite sits and been blissfully unaware of the true identity of the marvelous creature licking their hands!!! Although a couple have commented on her lonnnnng legs and nose! Wolves have always been a large part of my life. Even in grade school I studied them, wrote essays on them, drew them etc. I took the one wolf book out of the library so many times that they finally let me buy it off of them. My 2 career goals coming out of high school were either to become a veterinarian or be a wildlife biologist studying wolves. It took awhile, but now I've managed both! So the menagerie is about to expand again ......... what a journey life is!! sue(Aeryn & Wolle with Devyn & Rowyn and soon to be Willow!) Simcoe, ON |

Every moment is a Prelude to the rest of Life, so all of us in this crazy world should grab onto each moment and embrace it, as the future is determined by the path chosen with every heart beat. For many years you and our Dear Friend Willem Wijnberg have invested so much time and effort to help fight diseases in Dogs and other Animals, and to close down the puppy-mills.. For this,we choose to take the liberty to express for all Animal lovers, these simple words ~~"Thank You Very Much!" God Bless You, and remember the lyrics in an old tune that say ~ "The Best is Yet to Come"~ You are a Blessing from God and the world is a better place because of you and your caring ! | Comments: | Dear Jean, Thank you for sharing your lovely life with these most special dogs. You remind us we are not alone in our madness. We lost our beautiful Bernese boy Benson three weeks ago to cancer (liposarcoma returned after surgery in March08). We cherished him, he was my life as we have no children & I am finding it so hard to find peace. I now understand why they say one is not enough. I'm sure the other animals you love & care for pull you through the hardest part of sharing your life with them. In time, I hope I am as strong as you to put myself through it all again. For now i'll laugh and cry whilst reading your tales. Thank you. Sharon x P.S. Give Pixie a hug from me please x |

| Comments: | Hello, I came across your webpage and read your long journey to treat and save your precious Bernie. I am so sorry for your loss. I myself have one, his name is Tucker and he will be turning 3 yrs. old this July. they are such wonderful companions and give soooooooooooooo much love. Mine unfortunately is suffering on and off from super dry skin ( dandruff like) and also bumps on skin. I have spent more that I can afford at the Vet's office, and have bought supplements online. have changed his diet several times. He has been eating EaglePack Holistic Food for about year now. He loes the food and digests it very well, so I,ve decided to keep him on it. I also give him Derm Caps 2 daily, and Vit C daily. I read about flaxseed oil, that its good for the skin and coat, but am kind of skeptical about him taking this, since it is an oil. It miht be to harsh for his pancreatic system. I also read about the B.A.R.F. diet ( raw diet). Not totally convinced about this one either! What did you feed your Bernie? Well thanks in advance for taking the time to read my letter. I hope you are well and if possible hopefully have added another Berner to your life. Best regards, Soraya and Tucker |

| Comments: | I live in the States. Just found a Berner (possibly a Berner cross) wandering down the road in the very rural area in which I live. In doing research on-line I found your website and was saddened to find that so many Berners die so young. This girl I found is a wonderful dog and I certainly can understand, after spending 24 hours with her, how attached one can get to this breed. I'm doing complete "due diligence" to find her owner, but if they can't be found, I will take her on, no problem! Your site's wonderful! |

| Comments: | The story is unbelievable to see Cleo has had 14 male dogs...It makes me laugh ... I have 2 Berners , 1 born on Oct. 24th also , but in 2004 ... Nikko is 2.5 yrs old and Goliath (my giant) is born December 10th, 2002 (4.5yrs) .. They are the sunshine of my life , and I bring myself to read veteran dogs and the ones that passed on to doggie heaven... My heart goes out to these loving dogs ..they are so special . I can't imagine the day I will lose one of them ... it scares me so much already. I hope they get to live the longest of BMD lives which is about 12-13 yrs old ... They can be found on www.berner.org ... in the gallery section... On the left hand side where there is a search engine , you can type either Goliath , or Nikko and you will find my wonderful dogs ... Nikko being a small berner , more like the original swiss dogs ..and Goliath being American breed ... somehow I believe with Newfie bloodline somewhere's ... but beauty is only skin deep ...they are both beautiful in their own ways ... My deepest sympathies to Cleo ... Charlene :o) |

| Comments: | Hi, We have a Bordernese (at least we are fairly sure) At first sight we thought he was a Border Collie, but on closer examination we saw a kind, soft face and considered the possibility of a mix with a Spaniel of some kind, but he has the look of a Bernese about him. Photo's on the Internet have confirmed this for us. We got Ollie (previously known as Max) from a rescue centre in Herfordshire. He had been locked up in a shed in filth, won't go into further details. At first he was a dominant serious dog. We made him know we were the Alpha members of the 'pack' and he eats when we have finished eating, goes through doorways after us and is thanked for barking (once or twice only) for letting us know if there is a stranger around or a knock at the door. He sleeps in the kitchen in a mesh crate (door open) at night and with the door locked when we go out for a couple of hours. He did not play at first but now he is quite mad. We have a special toy which he can only have when we are ready to play, he has others of course but we need to make him know we are in charge. He loves to run and will go off on his own if allowed (and no, he is not allowed!) His main hobby is--------being with us. Ollie is between 3 and 5 years old at best guess. Hope this of interest to you. I would be delighted to here about any Bordernese out there. Helen |

| Comments: | 1 and a half months ago we lost our bernese mountain dog, he had a tumour in his heart and lasted longer than any vet expected he died peacefully in his sleep with a smile on his face as always and his sister by his side. up until the evening he died he was hs usual self no signs of anything. it seems to be a trademark of them never wanting to give up. im 16 and after 9 and a half years it has affected me more than ever as he got me through the las two years when 3 of my friends died and one of my horses and now he isnt here its like a huge part missing in the famly. however we will not have another as he was one ina million and it wouldnt be fair to compare another to him. so i understand how you feel. |

| Comments: | We loved your stories and pics! For Mother's Day I bought a Bernese Boy. We picked him up from JFK Airport on the 24th of May! He weighed in at a wopping 19.3 pounds!Born on March 26,2006. Purchased from ampaws.com Larry and Mary Schnell, Mexico, Missouri. His name is DUKE. An extremely affectionate, intelligent, quick lerner! His father is Lincoln and Mom Lexi. Just a little question- he loves to bite your hands.. ankles....I am sure it is his teething.. right? Any suggestions? First timers for this type if puppy. Our other dog was a Shepherd/Lab mix and he lived just shy of 16. I realize that this breed doesn't have that kind of life expectancy- Thanks again.. We reside on Long Island in New York. |

When i read your story i started crying. I just have one question, are bernese mountain dogs as good as they sound. Because in all the books it says that they are one of the nicest dog and they're gentle with kids...is that true?....well i hpe you can answer my question. thanks kathy lee |

I understand your concerns re the short life expectation and possible health problems associated with Bernese and wishing you all the best with your new Bordernese Boy. I have had two Bernese lived very healthy lives to ripe old age but also have lost two very young to cancer. This is a major concern within the breed, however is one that all responsible breeders are addressing. By coincidence I have just uploaded an article re. crossbreeds to my Longlease Site http://bernese.biz/articlecrossbreeds.htm A cross breed comes with a question mark! | Comments: | Hi I love Bernese but was worried about their short life expectation and possible health problems, so have recently got a Bordernese, that's a cross between a Bernese and a Border Collie. He's 14 weeks old, with huge paws and a really sweet Bernese face. He is adorable. He's the first dog my family has ever had so we are on a learning curve, and need plenty of advice. If anyone else has a bordernese please let me know how you have got on with him / her. |

| Comments: | Hi Christi, Thanks for your message on my Longlease Guest Book. With all my dogs I just give them a good brush every few days, when they are shedding I use a comb to strip out the old undercoat. I rarely bathe them but we do lots of walks in the rain which keeps their coats wonderfully soft. I feed sardines and other oily fish regularly for a healthy sheen. But my dogs are country dogs and running around outside most of the days, during the winter when it is very muddy their white bits tend to get a pink tinge, we have very heavy red clay soil here and they get very muddy a lot! If I wanted them to look immaculately groomed then would be another matter. I would take them to a professional groomers then for the full works! <g> There is a group on Yahoo for owners of Bernese Mountain Dogs, it is an International Group of some 2000+ owners of Berners Worldwide. I know discussions come up a lot on Berner L re. grooming and you will get the best advice here as to which grooming tools to buy. I am in the UK so no use telling you what I use, the brand names US are different. I would join Berner L , it is a group of Berner Lovers including many experienced breeders and vets who can help in all matters relating to our beloved Berners http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Berner-l/ Let me know if you need more help here. My beloved Golden Retriever 'Bandit'(15 years 6mths) had just been diagnosed with it, and I wanted to know more about it. Baring in mind his age and that he was declining so rapidly, Chemo just simply wasn't an option. This was nearly 2 years ago now but I think about him ever day. Your website made quite a differnce to our lives, as we got to find out about Bernese. We took our time, considering if they were the right breed for us. We visited discover dogs, several small bernese shows, and asked lots of people advice. Finally we got to choose "Bruin." He's the most delightful and wonderful Bernese puppy! I write this 4 days after his first birthday. It was probably not in the happiest circumstances that I originally read your website, but i thank you for sharing Samsons story, as we found out just how wonderful Bernese are! |

| Comments: | After seeing your site, it has reminded me of the bitter sweet memories of my beautifull Bernie. Although not a erise, he was a beautifull big black newfie, who also died very quickly and suddenly from a malignancy. Although our other two newfs keep us on our toes by letting us share there lives and affection, and unending love, I still often think of my bernie. Your site is an inspiration to all of these big beautifull creatures, who are so much more than dogs glyn |

| Comments: | i felt really sad after reading about the lost of your lovely dog. Like you, I have a 13 yrs old dog with multiple health problems. Just half an hour ago, i noticed he seemed unwell and upon checking, found that his throat is swollen and he is making a strange coughing wimper.. I am in a dilemma as whether to bring to to the vet or let him self recover. You see, if i had believed in the vet's words, Zacky would have been put to sleep twice. I am already grieving for Zacky who seems to be on borrowed time.. |

| Comments: | Our 6 year-old Berner, Monty, was just diagnosed with malignant histiocytosis. We're cherishing every day we have left with him. I was browsing online for other people's stories I really enjoyed your website with all the pictures! Someday I hope a cure or a way to breed MH out will be discovered so that these amazing and beautiful dogs won't have to leave their loving families so soon. |

| Comments: | We (my family and I) are just getting ready to go pick up our very first Berner next weekend! I am so excited, I've dreamed of having one for years, and now my husband is getting me a feisty, rambunctious pup as a late Valentine's gift! I found your website in my google search for Berner websites, and I've thoroughly enjoyed looking at every page. Sam's Story stole my heart. God bless you for your love of animals; as I am too an animal lover. Thank you for your view into being a Berner mom; now I more know what to expect! |
