| Comments: | I wish I could say that I grew up with Today's Special but unfortunately that isn't so. It would most certainly make me feel young but the fact is, I'm only 11 months younger than Mr. Hyslop. I answered an ad in the local newspaper by a family that needed a nanny for their daughters age 5 and newborn. After the baby was fed and went down for her morning nap, Courtney and I headed for the basement to partake in a little TV. The usual shows were on the air at the time (Sesame Street, Friendly Giant, Mr. Dressup et al.) as well as a new show which I had never seen before, Today's Special. After watching the lead actor sing and dance his way through the half hour show, I thought to myself "wow, can that guy sing". I looked for the credits at the end of the program to find out who he was. When I saw the name Jeff Hyslop, I was taken aback. I had never heard of him before and yet I was a regular idiot box viewer. I wondered what other programs he had participated in and my search to learn more about this talented young man was underway. Although I've never seen any of his plays, I did see most of his TV specials like Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk just to name a few. I can see why he is called "Canada's Triple Threat". He truly deserves it. |

| Comments: | My name is Craig Hempsted. I was born and raised in Vancouver/Victoria, BC. I started dancing when I was 16 years old and Jeff was always heralded as the performer to be; the goal. I met him when I auditioned for "A Chorus Line", when I was 22 years old. The run was produced by The Vancouver Playhouse and, of course, directed and choreographed by Jeff. It was a landmark experience working with Jeff. His insight into the human condition is so profound. Combine that with his investment in his chosen cast and you're making magic. He translates his agenda to the individual without attaching ego. Having since worked with a multitude of directors-some good, some mediocre-I have in retrospect embraced the full importance of Jeff's examples. He creates a workspace wherein all are welcome to contribute and all strengths are illuminated. He cajoles and tweezes and encourages and gets the very best from his players. What has stayed with me is that he deliberately includes like-minded individuals and trusts that they will make tasteful, informed choices. I played the character of "Mark" and it was analogous to my personal situation. A potential talent making the move from classroom to stage. Every night during the performances, without fail, I wept real tears when I realized I was (my character was) chosen for Zach's show. It was with the comfort zone that Jeff provided, the history, the layers, the nuance the vast and intricate details that I was free to feel this.
I subsequently was invited to perform for Jeff at The Charlottetown Festival, the tour of "Peter Pan", starring Cathy Rigby, and at Young People's Theatre in Toronto where we did "Jacob Two-two meets the Hooded Fang". Every time I worked with Jeff, I guess I observed and indexed his process. His humor and ability to play are what resonate with me. I am profoundly grateful for all of my time shared with this amazing man. My career has taken me all over the world. I have choreographed and danced in multi-million dollar spectacles and have met and worked with enormous talents. I have settled in Las Vegas where I am the artistic director of Pro Dance Centers. We believe that a versatile talent is an employed talent. We deliver our technique in conjunction with the nurturing of the person. It is Jeff that has colored my perspective. He is so generous with his own gifts. His remarkable and special qualities are an inspiration to me and I hope that I pass that energy on to the students who trust me with their instruction. .....came to Vancouver Island (my immediate family are here )started teaching Musical Theatre - so much talent here in the Comox Valley - which gained a ton of recognition, and a year later , with the support and tireless energy of business persons here we formed a musical theatre festival called Showcase Festival - where we pair a classic play with it's musical counterpart - i.e. 1st season -Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream/with Alan Menken's Dream On Royal Street. That was 2005 - last year we presented Taming of the Shrew/and Kiss Me Kate, and this coming season,the plans are for the brilliant Canadian classic - Waing for the Parade by John Murrell and Kander and Ebb's Cabaret both pieces set during WWII. I have been Artistic Director for these innaugural years (3) and am hoping the Festival can continue for many more seasons to come. I have also been adjudicating dance/voice and this year drama for many festivals from Brandon,Manitoba to Kamloops,Vancouver, Victoria,and Kelowna. I know that u might not get this but if you do i just wanna say that you are my hero because i want to bee just like u when I am older and not you get to agudicate and i am really exited. I love to dance and sing and my musical theater teacher says that I have a great voice. My mom said that i shouldn't pick my carrier as being a profecinal dance and singer but i want and that is what im going to do. My favorite classes are musical theater and tap. Im also really good at ballet and i have a duet with my best friend Megan. We did the song "Nock On Wood" last year and you said that we danced really well together. This year we are doind a duet call "Great Balls Of fire". It is really fun and we have a really kool costume. I still like last years becuase it was viberint. I got strait A's this year and i did a project on you and I got and A. I put pictures of you and i put that you did just over 900 performances. My Grama I call her baba used to be a profecinal acter and i want to to. My mom said that i got her voice. My sister dances to but think that she just does it to be beter at something than me but she doesn't really like it i think. I can kind of tell. Well im going to do a camp that we are doing at our studio. You have to try out and i was planning on singing one of you songs. I haven't really decided yet and i was wondering if you could send me an idea. You don't have to though if you don't want to. oh yah i forgot to tell you what we are doing for the musical. It is Bye Bye Birdie. I want to get a good part but i probebly won't becuase some of the older girls have really good voices too. I want to try out for american idol when im 16. I think that will be fun. But thats not for a while. This year I got a Tap solo and a ballet solo and that is weird because at our studio we don't get very many when you are my age you usally get one next year but i was lucky i guess. I feel way more comfturble dancing in front of you because you are nice. I had one sdgudicator that just nailed me and gave me one good coment at the end aand it was good job. I watched Today's Special with my three older kids, now 21, 19, and 18. A few days ago, I did a search on the show as I wanted my 4-year old to grow up with Today's Special and Jeff the wonderful mannequin too. I was so surprised to find that videos had been released! I immediately ordered the full set for her...and I will watch every single episode with her. I am thrilled to see how far you've come with singing and dancing. I am trying to locate your CDs, but haven't had much luck yet. In one of the episodes of Today's Special, you sang a song to a little girl who was moving away. After reading quite a few guest book entries I must say that Jeff is much more than the mannequin on Today's Special! He is Canada's foremost Triple threat! From Vancouver, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles to London! He is a mentor, an inspiration and a wonderful person to know. I feel incredibly lucky to get the opportunity to work with him and benefit from all his experience. It's an honour to have him as a member of our artistic and theatrical community. |

I am always thinking of how great the toys and shows were in the 80's when I was in elementary school and little by little, they're creeping back but it just isn't the same. They shows are waaaay different and in my opinion, nowhere near as good as they once were. Today's Special was ALWAYS a favorite! I loooove Jody and wanted to be like her when I grew up. I had a crush on Jeff and my dad had a hat similar to the one Jeff wore so I would snag it, put it on, and then pretend to come to life. They HAVE to bring these shows back! Wow... what can I say other than you are simply amazing? I grew up watching you on Today's Special and to this day, still watch the show and love it as much as when I was a child. I honestly wasn't even aware that you were still around doing things in show business and I think it's wonderful. I've taken a long time to sign this guest book because I had to think long and hard to decide what my favorite musical was! Can you believe it? I just didn't want to leave it blank on a page like this which just sings of the love of the theatre. One of the great things about having a sister born when I was 17 years old is that I got to see "Today's Special." I almost certainly wouldn't have watched it on my own, because I wasn't very impressed with the other TV Ontario show my sister had watched, "Polka Dot Door." But after awhile I realized that each episode of Today's Special was like a mini-musical, complete with wonderful original songs, great choreography, and heart-tugging plots. Of course every episode of the show wasn't stellar, but the quality of the shows was extremely consistent throughout the years. I have been able to make contact with all the cast members except Nerene Virgin, and they've all warmed my heart with their enthusiasm and love of the show. Meeting Jeff for the first time in Sherwood Park, Alberta was a wonderful experience, and a chance to say thank you for all the joy he's brought our family. |

I always knew him as Jeff the Mannequin. . .but I am touched to see that many people love him as much as I do. . .(I am crying as I write this. . .)Today I searched the internet for "Today's Special" and I downloaded the theme song. I started crying when I heard it! (I haven't heard or seen anything about the show in about 8 years and I get quite sentimental over anything from my childhood, but especially this!). "Hocus Pocus Alamagocus" has been a favorite catchphrase of mine over the years. Until today, I had forgotten what Jeff had looked like, but I am very grateful that I have been reminded and I doubt that I will forget any time soon. I wish that Today's Special would air again here in the United States on Comcast Cable, but the way things are looking, that won't be happening anytime soon. I grew up watching Today's Special, as have many of those who have already signed this guestbook. I would love the honor of meeting Mr. Hyslop, and probably wouldn't know what to do with myself if I had the chance. I am hoping to be able to be in Canada within the next year or two if I have the chance. The chances now are slim, but I'm praying really hard about it. Cool website! I didn't grow up with Today's Special. I was in college when it was first on. I discovered it while babysitting. My Mom runs a daycare in her home and that's what the kids watched every day at naptime. Guess what the other kids I babysat watched (whether they wanted to or not! LOL). My girls kind of missed out on Today's Special, by the time they were old enough to remember watching it, it was no longer being shown. I recently discovered video tapes through interlibrary loan, though, so my year old son has been enjoying them whenever i can check them out. I always felt that Jeff was really talented, and wondered what he had been up to after the show ended. A reunion show would be great! |
