| What I like about Jem: | Well, it's not so much what I like about Jem; it more of a matter of "what could I not like about her, or her friends?" Bottom line- the 99% "A-team" hand-drawn animation, the rock scores, the 80's synthesized music, the high-pitched Jem songs, the complex storylines, the plot twists, those "tuff" Misfits songs, the cliffhangers, the very high production quality of the series, the off-the-wall action that you'd only expect from a "truly outrageous" cartoon, and of course, the fact that the show doesn't really need to use guns & violence just to get the fan's attention. |
| Comments: | I LOVE JEM! As an amatuer artist, I have to say that Jem is like the best thing these eyes have layed it's sites on since, well, I don't really know... I find that Jem is kinda in a league of it's own. Strictly speaking about the show, I haven't really seen anything quite like it, since very few TV shows attempt to integrate music videos with dramatic story-telling & sensitive character topics, along with actual hand-drawn animation. I know there's Hanna Montana, and there's Josie & the Pussycats, maybe even Metalocalypse, but for the 80's, there's Jem. And when it comes to Christy Marx's writing, how could you go wrong? Christy is just flat-out a creative genius, who basically deserves all the credit behind the Jem TV series popularity. As a dude, I can see why everyone may not "get" Jem right away. When they see the show for the first time, they're impression is that they think of "Barbie", which I guess is to be kinda expected (stereotype). But a little scratching underneath the surface of Jem, reveals a TV cartoon series with some seriously compelling depth and content, not unlike the X-Men series that Christy Marx also went on to develop in the early 90's (also awesome stuff!). As much as I like Jem, I know it isn't for everybody. I think Jem is for people who are young at heart, and in some way, dream of entertaining others. My parents, and my friends, don't care about Jem, but that's OK: my parent's or friends don't know anything about how to rock-out either! ;P Jem the TV series, to me, is like THE pop-rock music Bible of the 80's. Seeing as it's over 20+ years later, I have to say that not too freakin' much has changed; it's just now the music is alot more "gloomy" and "alternative". Now music is "pumped-out" by the "small & independant" labels, that actually didn't exist when the Jem series originally aired. Britta Phillips is one awesome talent, and a secret admirer of mine! I think that she had the pipes that made the Jem series soar. Think about those *super*-high pitched screams she would integrate into songs like "Music is Magic", "Show me the Way", "Jazz Has", "We can make a Difference", She makes an impression, "Believe in Yourself", and so forth. As a dude, it's pretty tough for me to understand how the hell she managed to raise her vocal pitch so high, but then again, I'm not a babe. I'm trying to get those screams right, such as in "Come on In", "Broadway Magic", "Music is Magic", "Rock n Roll is forever", and that sort of stuff. I want to do some seriously good Karaoke for JemCon 2009. |

| Jem memories: | I was introduced to Jem in 2009 by a friend of mine who owned one of the first Jem DVD box sets that was ever released (released 2004- and thus now discontinued). I was staying with him in a small Manitoban town (Carberry) for about 2 weeks back in March 2009, when in the latter half of the second week, I actually noticed his "Jem season 1 & 2" DVD sitting on his DVD shelf. I chanced to see what the "Jem" DVD was all about, as I had only broken memories from my childhood about what Jem was, before of course the show was pulled from syndication on all the major cartoon networks available to me at the time. When I started to watch Jem for my first time on DVD in over 14 years since it's syndicated episode run on TV (from what I can remember), I actually started with the episodes that Christy Marx made commentaries on. I wanted to know what someone who had a part in creating the show some 20+ years ago, really thought of the work they did back in their hayday. Surprisingly as I found in a commercially-based entertainment commodity, the actors and directors of Jem were admittingly "proud", "overwhelmed", and just-plain "stoked" about the show, and the work they needed to do to turn the show over. I was SPEECHLESS. JEM just took my breath away... If there were 3 episodes I remembered from my youth (10+ years ago), it would be "Scandal", "The Band Breaks Up", and also "Alone Again"- all from the 3rd season. Based on reactions I've observed from people watching Jem, I'd have to say that "The Band Breaks Up" is probably the most popular episode in the entire series. It's not surprising however, as any break-up in any series is seen as teasing, unusual and interesting. I don't really remember the Stingers from the Jem TV show syndication run... It's too bad that those episodes were never released on DVD (but good they're at least on YouTube). I guess that when it comes to big business, you've gotta have a seriously "phat" wallet to make the DVD release happen. As I guess it was 1988, Jem was starting to stretch the limits of it's appeal to it's "pop-culture" audience. No matter how much time files by in the next 20 years- for sure, I will totally endorse and support a "Jem & the Holograms", or even "The Misfits" band "reunion". That's about all I can wish for in the world of the Truly Outrageous "Jem!", with her personality-torn ego Jerrica, who seems to derive pleasure from completing complex government-based tax forms ;-D (think: "One Jem Too Many") |
