I just found the Royales webpage. Those were some good memories. My sister Linda and I were in from approx 1975-1977. Our parents were also involved behind the scenes. I was in the only girl in the drum line. My sister was in colorguard and played Horn. My dad was known as Joe Pal.

Hi all! Many years ago I borrowed some Moe Knox pics from a drummer and have misplaced the contact information to return them. I thought it may have been Monte James, but the email address posted here is no longer any good. If I borrowed drumline pics from you, please let me know how I can get them back to you. I know how precious they are.
Thanks. John | |

Just the other day I was shopping and a lady in front of me turned around and stared at me. I remembered her right away!!!JACKIE!!!! We hugged, cried and hugged again. She gave me her e:mail address and that brought me to thinking of the good times with the Royales. When I went to the guest book I realized how many people I remembered. What great memories!! Wayne you were the only guy on our rifle team. Just you,Randy and me. I remember your rifle toss at the end. Keep in touch!!

It was good coming across this site. Brings back a lot of good and old memories. I go back a long time with the corps. Probably back to the beginning. Ted Caffin was the first director. I remember marching with the corps at Steelman school when it still was a school and we didn't even have instruments yet. Our first bugles were "G-Bugles". Now they look like like tumpets but back then they didn't have valves at all before we got our first new bugles. I remember when Fred Wolf became the Diretor. The Eatontown Recreation Drum & Bugle Corps was first known as the Jersey Rangers. It seems fitting that the Royales went out as a championship color guard. In the earliest days of the corps competition was winter color guard competitions. It is hard to believe that my first experieence with drum corps was 50 years ago. God Bless you all. AKA Carol Buchanan. I marched with the color guard and I was a flag bearer. I was with the Copertones for years and then I joined the Royales. I knew Dennis Bueno, Monte and his drum buddies. It has been so long I can not remember many names. This web site makes me want to get my dad to drag out the old slides!
I wish I could remember the years I was with the Royales. I left NJ in 1972 as my dad got orders for Ft Huachuca, AZ. I now live in Jacksonville, FL.

My parents were very good friends with Fred and Marie before the inception of the Royales. I called him "Uncle Fred".
He was a terrific man who did wonderful things for the youth of our community back then. We need more roll models like him in todays world. My years with the Royales were some of my best times and he gave us those times and memories. My older sibblings and I were there from the beginning and stayed with the Royales until 1973 when I left to join the Navy. He will be missed by many but also remembered by many. I live in Ohio now and can not attend the service, but my thoughts and prayers are with his family and that includes his drum corp family. Louann Veverka (Brand)

Hey all! Just wondering around the net and found the site. And what a suprise it was. I marched one season with the Royales. 1981, I was about 11 at the time. I played soprano. It was at the request of my sister Lana who was already int he guard from the year before I come and march as i was in between corps. Made many friends some of wihch I still work with.
prior to my little stint with the Royales I marched with the Monarchs/Kings Regiment (with Patrick Vicari), later moved onto the ASbury Park Hurricanes, The Chancellors, The Royales, Black Watch, the Bridgemen, and last but not least The Caballeros. I have been with Hawthorne since 1986 and have been her ever since. Aside from 3 years off for good behavior I marched every season. I have taught many high school bands throughout NJ. Elmwood Park High School, Burlington High School. Manahawken High School, Morristown High School, and presently Bergenfield High School. I was recently married. My Wife Valeri and I met as members of the Caballeros. She was the pit/arrnageer instructor/ player. Valeri was a member of the Crossmen from 88 through 90 and was a member of the Blue Devils in 91. She graduated undergrad from Westchester University and got her masters in Music Education at the University of North Texas. As I mentioned I have still kept in touch with some old members of the Royales. Myself and a few other Cabs Alumni have put together a mini corps and we presently have John Arientano assisting us the the music program. Very nice to see the corps name again amoungst the living. Hope all is well and hope to see maybe corps come out of this. Josh Katz

Hello to all former GSC marching members. I was one of the people who helped out in the Winter Colorguard in 1982 of the Royales ...for my friend and your instructor Tony Catanio. I marched in the rifle line in the State Championships in Wildwood...and what a fun time I had. I Marched the WinterGuard season`s (82-83) with the New York Royal Guardsmen...and was lucky to march the Championships with Tony Jenners and Joe Doyle...and Just all of the great people of the Royales. My Drum Corp roots are with the Wayne Monarchs(76-78) (Kings Regiment....after merger)and at the time ....the Hawthorne Caballeros 79-81. Marching with the Royals was so much fun and it gives me such joy just thinking back at the fun we had the weeks leading up to Wildwood. I am in the 82 picture on the far left sitting on the end next to Tony Jenners. If only we could turn back the hands of time !! I would love to do it all over again. Thanks Royales for allowing me to spend some time with your great Corp and allowing me to have such wonderful memories.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims and families affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Katrina barely touched us last Thursday, here in Boca Raton, Florida; and it was only at a Cat 1 status. In addition, we went through several feeder bands on Friday after the storm unexpectedly turned southwards into the Keys. I will say that even as a Cat 1 - there were several very scary moments and was already proving to be very violent and nasty - so we can only imagine what folk actually went through on the Gulf coast. As a survivor of Hurricane Andrew and witnessing how much stress and how many months it actually took for South Florida to get it back together - we can only offer to people to stay patient and try and not give up. Hurricane Andrew pales in light of Katrina especially with the horrible amounts of water that is involved. This is just a terrible, terrible tragedy.

HI TO ALL THE GREAT FOLKS FROM THE ROYALES. ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE TIMES TEACHING DRUM CORPS WAS WITH YOU. LOTS AND LOTS OF GREAT MEMORIES OF MANY DAYS AND NIGHTS IN THE PARKING LOT AND PRACTICE FIELDS OF THE DRUM CORPS WORLD, NOT TO MENTION BRADLEY BEACH AND THE OLD ASBURY PARK CONVENTION HALL ON MANY A SNOWY AND COLD NIGHT OR THE AIRPORT.(WHERE DIDN'T WE PRACTICE)
I WAS COMING TO THE REUNION ON THE 7TH. IRONICALLY I WAS COMING UP FROM WILDWOOD WHERE MY YOUNGEST SON TIM(23) FOUGHT IN A ULTIMATE FIGHTING MATCH. (HE WAS ALWAYS A LITTLE NUTTY) ANYWAY MY WIFE TERI WAS IN OUR VAN WITH MY DAUGHTER WHEN SHE HAD A FLAT. I WAS IN ANOTHER VEHICLE AND IT SCREWED UP THE DAY SO WE DID NOT MAKE IT. JOHN JEAL SENT ME THE DISKS AND THEY ARE GREAT. I HAD GIVEN JOHN THE 77 CYO AND 79 RECORDINGS BUT HAD NOT HEARD THE OTHERS SINCE WE DID THEM. I ARRANGED THE SHOWS FROM 74 THRU 79 AND HAD FORGOTTEN I WROTE SOME OF THE THAT STUFF. WHAT A TREAT TO HEAR ALL THE GREAT ROYALE'S RECORDINGS. THE CORPS WAS TRULY OUTSTANDING. YOU WERE AWESUM IN 72, I WAS AT THAT WORLD OPEN WITH ANOTHER CORPS AND I REMEMBER HOW FABULOUS YOU WERE. I THINK ABOUT ALL OF YOU OFTEN, YOU ALL TAUGHT ME A LOT. I WILL MAKE THE NEXT REUNION IF I HAVE TO WALK. RAY TROXELL

Had a good time yesterday at the Reunion. It was nice to see everyone again. Wish the turn out would have been more. It was really great to finally meet Mr. Wolfe and his son and listen to the story of how the corp was founded. If anyone is interested I have about 25 CDs(a disc set) left of the corps. If you would like to buy one please e-mail me and I will give you all the info. Take care all you Royales and lets keep in touch. So when is the meeting for the next Reunion.

Report from the reunion. We did not have as many people as we would have like to, but those who did attend had a great time. The topper for most of us was that PaPa Wolf, our founder and the guy who started it all, was in attendance. He is 81 years young now and it was really a nice treat to have him with us for the day. Fred Wolf, our origianl horn instructor, also came. The Alcrim sisters, Sandy, Candy and Randy and thier children and grandchildren traveled the farthest. They came from Mass, and Arizona. Butch also came from Arizona. We had some luck with weather since it was a little cooler than it has been lately. We had some rain about 4pm but we were nice and dry under the pavilion. It is always fun to see the gang and although a small group, we still had a great time. I will post some pitures soon.

Hi everyone, just some breaking news on the reunion. We decided not to go with the catered food, some thought it was too expensive and we did not have enough interest in the food. So we are doing bring your own lunch. We will supply cold drinks and some snacks and there are bunch of places in walking distence that you could get take out if you don't want to bring something from home. There is a very good pizza/sub place across the street from the park. If there is enough interest when we get there, we could make a order for pizza or subs and send someone over to get them. There is also McDonalds, Wendy's and subway right in the area. I work at Ft. Monmouth and there are so many places right by the gate that are there for the Ft. Monmouth crowd. Again we will have stuff to drink and some snack stuff available. I will put out a coffee can and if you would be so kind to donate a couple bucks to pay John and I back for what we have put out, we would appreciate it. I also have an Ice Cream vendor coming around 2:30 if you want something from there for a desert.
Also, John will have a 2 CD set of all the recordings we could find. He had them cleaned up by a recording studio and he copied a bunch of them. The will be available to purchase from him. I plan to bring the pictures and stuff I have from last time and I have mugs and some stuff left from the last one that I will bring along in case anyone wants them. Things are looking good for attendance and I have been to the site. It is really nice. They have improved it some from what I remember and we have a covered pavilion with picnic tables. I would recommend though you may want to bring a folding chair if you have one, not sure how comfortable the picnic tables will be.

Hello everyone! Greetings from Cincinnati (yeah, you read that right). I've just spent the last half-hour browsing through the website, looking at the pictures and reminiscing about my life 30 years ago (boy how time flies). I'll tell you what, I still consider my drum corps years some of the best times I've ever had. I love the website, especially the photos.
Unfortunately for me, I won't be able to attend this reunion, either. I'm going to be at marching band camp with my high school band. I'm the marching instructor (no, not the guy who writes the drill, just the guy who teaches it). Anyway, my oldest son marched and now my daughter also marches. Both of them play trumpet, of course. Hope to stay in touch. Regards and God bless, Dennis Bradley Soprano Line 1972 - 1979

Hello everyone,
We are making progress on thre reunion. Our original idea did not work out. We were going to get a hot dog guy to come but could not find one to do that. WE really did not want to do the cooking ourselves. That means that someone would have to do all the work. We found someone to do all the cooking. He wants 20.00 a head for adults and kids under 12 are 5.00. The menu will be a major bargeque, chicken, ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and peppers, corn, watermelon and we are trying to get an Ice cream truck to show up for desert. Now if the price is to high for you let me know. You can opt to bring your own lunch. WE just want you to come. The more people we get however the more the price will come down. But what we like is that this places comes and does all the work. The place that is doing this has really good food. Our Plan is that I will pay up front and ask you to pay me the day of the picnic. I am sure you will all do right by me. We will need to get some counts soon. If you are coming, if you want the catered food, how many adults and how many kids under 12. If you just want to bring you own food just let me know. (There is a McDonalds right near the park). John Jeal is making CDs with all the music he could find. He will have them for sale at the reunion if you would like one. He made about 40 copies and if we need more, he will make them for you. I looked at the place, there is a covered pavillion with tables. You might want to bring a comfortable lawn chair so you don't have to sit on the picnic tables all day. We plan to start at 1pm and the food will be there at that time as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone Barbara Just drop me an email or give me a call in the evening. I live in Tampa Florida now, I've been here for 23 years now and am very disappointed that I will not be able to make it to the reunion. I played a second soprano and my brother was Bob Hansen, who passed away in 1979. He played the french horn and my father Bill Hansen is living in Florida now, it's nice to have him close by. I would love to hear from all of you, my email address is aaspirit47@netzero.com. Is Lore Babson around anywhere or the Compton's? God bless all of you and glad to see that you are keeping this together!! Hope to hear from you, Susan

Just a reminder to everyone and especially to our last post.
Our resources / links page provides many links based on the Drum Corps genre. I am trying to add many more links in the future. There are a couple of sites specifically for New Jersey Drum Corps. Also, both the Bridgemen site and Cabs site provide a pretty decent history section. Hope this helps. Speaking of which, anyone have the Royales history???

John Jeal had a good idea for a date, 7 August, almost 33 years and 3 days from date of our 1972 World Open performance.
I did a little checking and Wolcott Park Pavillion in Eatontown is open and available for that date. The lady from the recreation department sent me the application and said she would hold the date open for us unless somelse inquired. If they do, she will call me and give me a heads up to see if we still want it. The cost if you live in eatontown is 150.00. John got hold of Gary Bradley who does still live in Eatontown and would be willing to take it out. If you are not a Eatontown resident it is 300.00. So it would help if he can do that. I am good just about anytime for our first meeting. I am however going on vacation the first week of May so that is out for me. Let me know when we want to meet and I will be there. Barbara

Greetings everyone!!! Tony...glad to see the site up and running, too bad the other site dwindled.
I don't know if any of you remember me. I started out my Drum Corps career with a small little parade Corps sponsored by the Elks Club in Brick called the Purple Bucs. My brother and I got our first taste of competition with the Bucs Color Guard (that was taught by Mary (Barbara's sister) Johns) during the 69' season. When the Bucs folded, I played the 70' season with the Surfmen (from Brick) as solo soprano (while Barbara Johns, Fred and Beth Heitman went up to you folks). It wasn't until after the 70' season that I saw the light and came up there to Eatontown with the rest of my friends. I played soprano with you folks during the 71' and 72' seasons. I left in 73' after getting out of high school and joining the Marine Corps. God how I loved those days!!! Anyway...after many twists and turns in my life, I've ended up out here in sunny southern California as a retired Navy Chief Hospital Corpsman who now works as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Room at Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital. I joined a Senior Corps out here, but quickly quit when they went the way of the dark side like all the rest of todays marching brass bands with their dance troupe accompaniments (please excuse my sarcasm...I hate DCI and what they have done to the activity). I hope this email finds you all well, and I welcome any correspondence with any of you. I read the guestbook entry about Mr. Heitman. If any of you are in touch with either Fred or Beth, please give them my sincere heartfelt condolences. I knew Mr. Heitman well and Fred and Beth were very close friends. Well...I've babbled on long enough. Take care everyone, and I look forward to hearing from you soon. Jim

Sounds good to me Barb. Anyone have any suggestions regarding date, place, etc? I guess Wolcott Park would be a logical first place to mention. Maybe on a holiday weekend so out of state members can spend some time? We could make it a "covered dish" to avoid anybody being shut out for financial reasons. Just a good-ol-time picnic. Who's in?

Maybe we should try to get a picnic arranged for this summer. Nothing as fancy as the last reunion, although it was allot of fun. I have sent Tony the email addresses that I had from the 2000 reunion. Maybe with that list we can see if there is enough interest. At least among the ones that are still local. Willing to help if someone wants to give it a try.

Hey, this is a great site and awesome to see the memories of the Royales. I marched in the LI Kingsmen back in the mid to late 70's and remember marching against the Royales in Garden State. I actually have a recording of the Kingsmen in 1978 which was recorded at the Royales contest. We lost to the Royal Brigade that night, but ended up beating them at the end of the season. Always loved you guys. All the best with the site.

Tony,
Sorry it took so long to sign in but this has been the month from hell for me health-wise. I am only now beginning to feel human again. I wanted to personally assure you that you have my full support and backing regarding your new Royales' Alumni website. I was never very knowledgeable about web design so getting the first one started was a major undertaking for me but I knew it was something that was much needed and wanted so I did what I had to do to at least get it rolling so there would be somewhere to at least keep in touch through the guest book. But with my lack of real internet skills, keeping it constantly updated was.... well.... you can see how that turned out. Thanks for picking up the ball and running with it. If there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. Keep up the good work. (Hi everybody!!!)
