Comments:Hey, I'm Hayley.
I'm from UK I had the scoliosis operation when I was 11. It was the one involving the titanium rod, making my x-ray look like a bit like a train track ;] (no offence to anyone else here! but hey im just being positive, in my own little way.)
But yeah, i'd love to get in touch with someone else who went through the same opp, so.. get in touch :]
I never had to wear a brace before or afterwards, the consultant told me that because the curve was in my upper back, a brace wouldn't be much use, and an operation would be the best way to sort it out. Being completely honest I can't remember the degree of the curve before the opp, but it was quite a large number, and I still have the photographs of my back (somewhere!) and the before and after x-rays ;]

I was so self conscious after the opp, but now I realise I have no reason to be, it's my back.. what should I care what other people think?

Comments:I'm 44 and thought I dealt with my scoliosis back in high school when I was first diagnosed and treated with a milwaukee brace, but about 9 years ago I started having a lot of pain and nerve impingement and low and behold my curve has gone crazy!!! After being stable for all those years and through 3 pregnancy's (all the babies weighed over 8 pounds), now my list of diagnosis and Dr's just keeps growing. I'm pretty new to the internet and am hoping to figure out a good way to connect with others in a similar situation or to help someone else who is as frustrated as I am with my situation! Good Luck to all!

This year in April i had went and got x-rays taken my curve was at a 23. They made me an appt. in Fort Wayne to go and see a specialist. On Friday April 27, 2007 i went and saw the specialist. they took more x-rays and said my curve was at a 28 and 35. The specialist said i need to get a brace so it wouldnt increase. i was really scared because i have read other scoli stories about braces and they seem very uncomfortable. On Monday April 30,2007 i went back to ft.wayne and got fitted for my brace. i get my brace on May 14th,2007. i have to wear my brace 18 hours aday. i am very nervous about getting the brace.

I went to the doctor frequently and when my curve was at 26 degrees I had to get a brace. (Feb. 2, 2006) It really bummed me out, but I'm really social and before I even got it I told like, everyone I knew, which is like everyone in my grade. So when I came back, everyone (especially guys) knocked on me and my friend Tim gave me the nickname Plastic Sam. I don't know what it means. So now I have abs of plastic!!! I hate my brace still, but I'm probably getting it off in two months cuz my curvature is only like <1 degree. YAY!!! So I'm really lucky that my curve is sooo good, cuz after reading all urs I don't feel so bad for myself. You guys went through a lot more! Thanx for readin'!

Whats with that? I guess if you have no health care coverage thru your job, you dont matter. I work and have for many yrs. and deserve to be treated as everyone else, instead I suffer in pain everyday.

like i told you ... i foundd out i had scoliosis at 11. got a brace at 12. i'm almost 13 and i'm still weraing it. i'd love to talk to anyone that wants to talk. i have msn messenger also. add me... to add me to msn just type in britt10893@yahoo.com! i'll help if i can! and i hope you'll do the same!

Comments:Hey everyone,

I guess a formal introduction would be useful: - My name is Erika, I'm 18 and come from Suffolk, UK.

And here is my story (it is written in the format of 3 articles; the first 2 have been published in Backbone Magazine (SAUK) and the 3rd is due for publication in there this May): -
Exercise Can & Does Help Scoliosis!!! - Part I
In 1997 around my 11th birthday my mother noticed a slight hump on my right shoulder when I bent forwards. We consulted our GP who dismissed it saying that he had seen a lot worse and not to worry. My mother consulted the Internet and thought maybe I had Marfan’s syndrome – she persuaded our GP to refer me to Dr Child, who said I had not got Marfan’s but scoliosis, which should be carefully monitored. It was not.
A year later and our local GP still would not believe that there was any urgency in my condition but mum went into action and we saw an orthopaedic surgeon. He said my Cobb angle was 34º and it was a case for immediate bracing. I wore a Boston brace for 2 years. He then said I should discontinue wearing it since I had stopped growing and if there was any sign of deterioration to return.
After a year mum said the hump was definitely bigger. She consulted back issues of Backbone and found a book of exercises written by Susan Swire. I wrote to Susan and she told me about the Katharina Schroth Klinik in Germany which specializes in physiotherapy treatment for spinal disorders but mainly scoliosis.
Unfortunately there is a 9-month waiting list for treatment at this huge German clinic. Through them we found that not just Germany, but in many countries throughout the continent, treatment based on the Schroth system is given together with bracing of a totally different type.
Before Dr Rigo accepted me as a patient I had to convince him that I am sufficiently self-motivated to not only overcome the language barrier but also to carry out his exercise regime for life.
When I entered his clinic I was filled with hope and optimism. Here was a man who was totally dedicated to the rehabilitation of Scoliotic patients. He cannot understand why Britain and America do not use the Katharina Schroth system. A lot of research has shown that rehabilitation does work.
I feel that this method of treatment should be the new way forward for treating all Scoliosis, whether large or small and that for anybody who wishes to avoid the trauma of an operation it is certainly worthwhile to investigate this tried, tested and non-invasive form of Scoliotic treatment that has proved to work for myself and many others of all ages.

Exercise Can & Does Help Scoliosis!!! - Part II
Many SAUK readers have contacted me wishing to know more about the treatment and from their response it is clear that there is great interest in this method. I was very pleased that our progressive editors have published an article by Dr Weiss, head of the Schroth Klinik in Germany (SAUK No. 68) and to read the success story by Geoffrey and Anna Walker. It underlines the fact that there are alternative methods of treatment and it is good to know that SAUK is helping to keep us informed.
I revisited Dr Rigo’s clinic this summer for a check-up and adjustment to my exercise regime. During my 1st session of rehabilitacion treatment (Summer 2002) I halved my curve from 42 degrees to 21 degrees. When Dr Rigo re-measured me this Summer 2003 I was comfortably reassured to hear him say that my correction had been maintained and my hard work and diligence in doing the exercises had been repaid. (See My Website http://www.erikamaude.com for photos to substantiate these measurements.)
I believe that I am living proof that the Katharina Schroth method works and is a viable alternative for people wishing to avoid an operation.
No curve is too big or too small and no person too old to be treated successfully with rehabilitacion. For example I met at the clinic a woman who had a very severe curvature and who had been told her scoliosis was beyond being treated with an operation. Prior to her treatment with Dr Rigo she was unable to carry out simple day-to-day tasks, work or travel alone. Having received the treatment and by doing extensive exercises she is now able to lead a normal life, work, travel alone and is improving all the time. Last year I shared a class with a 28 yr old who had a severe lumbar curve and this improved noticeably after 4 weeks of intensive training. 18 adolescent girls and boys were also there for the 4-week course and they all showed significant improvement by the end of the course.
It must be emphasized that rehabilitacion requires discipline and self-motivation. There can be no lasting benefit without diligent regular practise. It can only help those who are prepared to help themselves. It was all very well my mother arranging to take me to the clinic but it would have been a complete waste of time, money and effort on everybody’s part had I not put in my share of the work which involves getting up half an hour earlier to do my exercises. No one can make you do this and no one can do it for you. It has to come from your own desire to succeed.
I would love to hear from anyone who is interested in exploring alternative routes for treating scoliosis or who have success stories of their own.

Exercise Can & Does Help Scoliosis!!! - Part III
Living Proof
Having reduced my curve from 42 – 21 degrees and having maintained that improvement for 3 years now I believe at 18 years old I am living proof that rehabilitation based on the Katharina Schroth method does work. My back is straight and strong. My own experience and that of others proves that a personal exercise plan carried out regularly and conscientiously is a successful alternative to the operation. Indeed rehabilitation is the treatment of choice in several European countries.
Dr Rigo has assured me that if I continue with my present exercise regime my curve will not increase and I will never need the operation.
Following the publication of my first article in Backbone no 67 I received so many emails that answering them was interfering with school work so I decided that the answer was to build a website and at the same time to incorporate details of various treatment methods both conventional and alternative that have worked for others as well as FAQs about rehabilitation treatment. This has been a huge success I now receive 400 unique visitors per month and frequently receive emails complimenting me on the comprehensive coverage of Scoliosis on my site. However the downside is when I visited Dr Rigo last autumn he asked me to stop giving out details of his clinic because he simply cannot treat more patients.
As I walked down the Del Portal de L’Angel eating my sorbet that evening I felt so sorry for all those people who would not be able to have the treatment. Then I had an idea. I would open a clinic in England to teach others the exercises based on the Katharina Schroth method! Back in the hotel later that evening I told my parents my plan and that I also want to eventually help people who are financially disadvantaged to have this treatment too. They were very enthusiastic and 100% behind me. Next day I shyly asked Dr Rigo what he thought of the possibility of my opening a clinic like his in England. He told me that if anyone could do it successfully it was myself and with characteristic generosity he promised to personally train the staff and give all the technical assistance and expertise necessary.

PS. Big apologies for the length of this post, I just hope it helps other Scoliosis peeps out there who want to avoid the operation as much as I did!!!

Anyhow, I would love to chat with anyone about how tough it can be to wear a brace, pre-surgery gitters, or anything! I'm very nice, I promise! :)

BUT... if you are wondering about surgeries, i am definently the one to ask! the reason i had so many was because the bars kept breaking loose. please email me if you'd like to talk! by the way i'm turning 18 in 2 days!

The Shriner Hospital did the surgery when I turned 14 yrs. old. At that time my spine was about 64degrees curved. It was too late to consider trying the brace. I am glad that it was done and over with before I had much time to ponder the reality of all that was taking place. Now I am 43 yrs. old. I am so glad to have a back that is straight. The pain and humiliation of going through 9th grade in a body cast is long past.I can empithise with what you have gone through. The best part is that sometimes we must go through difficult times in order to become better than we would be other-wise. Flo.

And i never heard about who can make my spine become straight so quickly and easily.I thought several minutes and decide to try it .
After one week treatment , i felt it without problem with my breath, Ever time's treatment looks very simple , he just let me lie in the bed then use his hand to make my bone become straight, when it work, i can hear my bone's sound. And he ask for me play -i-,(sorry i don;t not the word, i think you can understand it ).It can make my spine straight , make my muscle adjust , make my room between the spine bigger.
Now , after one month's treatment , i recover well. He told me have 2 months rest then take 10-some days treatment , i will be better , The sorry thing is i can not totally be normal , for i am 24 years old , if i am under 18, i can revover more. And my big bend is on the breast, there are some ribs protect my bend spine , he can not make the bend become straigt totally. If my big bend is in the waist, i can recover more.
The doctor told me , what he use called orthopedics , it is his ancestor create it and teach one generation to another generation. He must learn wushu and bone since he was a child. So he have the strengh and knowledge to treat patients. This kind of treatment is very dangous if the doctor make mistakes.
If foreigens come here to take the treatment , the fee is usd100 per time. And for bend spine , i need 2 or 3 months . The bone must have not quality problem. The age under 18 shall be best if you get this disease since you were child. But if you get bend spine after 18 , it is okay wether you are 24 or 34.
Just say these , i hope you belive me , i just speak the truth what i know.

I am a chinese girl , 24-year-old femal.I have been found about 35 degree S bend in my spine when i 13-year-old.My parents took me to hospitals and clinics, we try many ways to correct it. Such as wear a model,do massage,do acupuncture. All of these things work little.
It is luck that i don't suffer more physical pain during 13 to 23, speak the truth , i suffer more mental pain , I strat to breath diffecult since June of this year.I don't think it is my bend spine cause it at that time , i eat some pills and i think maybe i get asthma. One of my friend introduce a doctor to me , she said it is a wonderful doctor , maybe he can help you. I don't believe her at that time. So i qiut my job and i decide go to another city , i think everything shall become better if i left here. The luck thing is before i go to other city , i went to see the doctor because i have time.
I told him: can you treat bend spine? He looked at me sight and said: do you feel diffecult to take breath? I surprise and answer yes.He told me bend spine can effect lung problem and other organs . He touch my pulse then depiction my body situation.(It is the main way for chinese tradiction doctor to diagnose the patients disease) What he said really fix in with my situation. I trust him half since now. He asked me to take a x-ray, i did it . After he saw my x-ray pic, he said he can let me feel better and make my spine 1/3 or more straight.

Comments:Hey, I'm 13 and this summer I found out I had scoliosis. It didn't really bother me, until I got my boston brace 6 months later. I started wearing it during the christmas holiday and now have been in it for 2 months. My life has changed a lot because simple tasks are incredibly hard to do. Sadly over a two month period only one of my friends noticed (not that I wanted them to notice, but it's pretty obvious, so it says alot about how much my friends pay attention) I didn't really want to tell them - it felt kind of akward. I have a 53 degree curve and am going to have surgery in may. If anyone wants to talk to me my emails sugarkiss34@hotmail.com.

Comments:I'm nineteen now and I found out that I had Scoliosis when I was twelve through screening at school. I was really upset because I didn't want to be different. It was worse when I had to wear a brace in junior high. I had a really bad experience because I felt like I was weird and everyone was looking at me. I had a bad self-image and just wanted to be like everyone else. I was happy when I didn't have to wear it anymore, but I still struggle with my body image. My curves keep getting worse, so there is a huge chance that I might have to have surgery this year. I'm really nervous and scared about that.

Comments:Hey!!
i am 17 (almost 18 yrs old) and i live in new hampshire. my mom is a school nurse and when i was in middle school, she got this cool thing to test kids for scoliosis. well she immediatly tested it on me n my bro and when we got it checked out i had a 12 degree curve. They continued to watch it and when i was in 6th grade it got bad enough that i needed a back brace (i think its a boston brace but im not sure) well i wore it religiously except for swim team practice and six months later my back had gotten alot worse, about 50 degrees, and i needed surgery! well i really didnt have a choice so i went along with it. i have 2 metal rods in my back now and i dont even set off the metal detector. ( i acutally was kinda sad about that lol) i just had my last appointment a few months ago.
if you wanna talk to me, go right ahead... id love to talk to you about my trials and tribulations and ask you about yours... if you have any questions about the brace or surgery dont be afraid to ask... really..

Comments:Greetings fellow sufferers,I am 65 yrs. old and got Polio after taking the first live virus injection in school. It was Dr. Jonas Sacks first prototype to experiment with. Not long after I was diagnosed with Polio I was told to wear an Orthopedic shoe lift so that my spine won't curve. I did not wear it because I was 15 and had my own way. I was told 25 yrs. ago that I had two yrs. to live before my heart or lungs gave out, and two yrs. ago I was given two yrs. again to live. I've never worn a brace, and I have worked hard all my life,I gave birth and raised three children. The discription of surgery has always scared me everytime I thought about it. As time goes by doctors have improved the braces and surgical tecniques that you may take advantage of today. It may be too late for me, but please do all that you can to insure a better quality of life for yourselves.
