He had 2, william and Sarah. William the son had 2 children also. My line comes from Sarah, niece of John West. The line to me was in London (Bethnall Green)until the mid 1800s when a daughter married a Leicester man, there are lots of cousins across the midlands now, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Rutland, Bedfordshire and Nottinghamshire. |

I am researching the "Tombs" family tree who came from Newbury in Berkshire. My gr,gr,gr grandfather was called Israel Tombs he was Born in 1808 and died in 1889 in Newbury. He married Maria Purdue born in 1807 and died in 1889 she was also from Newbury. Maria was the daughter of Joseph Purdue born in 1762 and Hannah Parsons born in 1765 both from Newbury. Alexander Sheerman maried Mary Harding and had a son Daniel Sheerman. Daniel Sheerman married Charlotte Spindloe and had a son Edward Alexander. Edward Alexander Sheerman married Sarah North and had a son Henry Alexander Sheerman. Henry Alexander Sheerman married Emily Nightingale and had a son Ernest Walter Sheerman (my grandfather). Ernest Walter Sheerman married Dorothy Ives and had a daughter Dorothy Ivy Sheerman (my late mother). I am descended from the Wests via Anstice May who married Thomas Hendy [1635] of Milton Hampshire. This is through the Stare/Randall line as jane Stare married Jasper Randall, their son married Anstice Mercer and their daughter married into the Hendy family! I am a direct descendant of the Boldre/Beaulieu Hendys through my grandfather, William Gates. His mother was Mary jane Hendy born 1889. |

| Comments: | I have known about the West Family since I was a little girl as my mother showed me her pedigree written out on a very old discoloured piece of paper. I must admit that at this early stage it did not hold a lot of interest but as the years roll by I started to think more and more about my past. I have now extensively traced nearly all sides of my family back to 1600 and 1700s and have joined the West Family Group.
Since creating my tree on ancestry.co.uk I have come across a lot of West descendents who do not know anything about the West Family and have pointed them in the right direction. Some are quite closely related and I must admit I find the whole thing quite fascinating and find it very difficult to put down when I start more research. The Newsletters are greatly welcomed by me but I know that an awful lot of work must be put into this and would like to thank everybody concerned for producing such an information article. |

I am descended from a sibling of John (and can too trace my recent ancestors to the Andover area), and I have seen a small (but definitely set in stone!) plaque relating to them in a church in Newbury, Berkshire. I believe it is St Nicolas' Church in the town centre but I'm afraid I was very young when I went there so can't remember too well!

| Comments: | I have just found this site and come from the Blue line of Randall. I am puzzled by certain discrepancies in the details back to the Stare's. Jane, who marries Jasper Randall has a birth given as about 1580 whereas her sister Elizabeth, who married Simon West has a birth date of about 1616, a difference of some 36 years - very unusual. Secondly Simon married Anne Keane in 1637 but Elizabeth and Simon produced John in 1641 but Simon it seems was still married to Anne at that time. Was Elizabeth just a mistress or used with Anne's consent because she was barren.
I wondered if Thomas and Agnes Stare did give birth to Elizabeth maybe Simon's Elizabeth was actually the illegimate daughter of a sister who Thomas and Agnes brought up as their own child as sometimes happened. The details given on this site leave these points uncertain although this may sound like just conspiracy theorising and would like to know if anyone has found out more concrete details regarding these anomalies. It just bugs me that I cannot tie up these loose ends properly so would appreciate other input from descendants Many Thanks Bob |

As a member of the Chandler family I think I am related in the green line from Thomas Stair, John West's uncle, his mother Elizabeth Stair's brother. Sons and Grandsons followed, George, Richard, John, John, William, George, then in 1815 a daughter Mary Ann Stair married William Chandler, and they had Noah, one of six Chandlers, who had Frederick Noah, one of nine, and he had seven children, one of whom was our Grandad. My mother was Marie Joan Green, only child of Mr.& Mrs. James Walter Green, (my grandfather had 8 brothers and sisters, and their respective children live today, some in around Andover). His mother's maiden name, by all accounts, was West.
Reason for research now, is that my mother has been contacted by a long lost cousin, who is currently doing research on the family. My fathers name was Douglas Didcock and his fathers name was Edward Didcock. There were several boys in the family and one daughter. Her name was Ada. | Comments: | I am currently looking up my family tree, I know older members of my family were or are registered and have a couple of registration numbers, so far I have my tree going back to Edward Wedge 1759 who married Mary Colliance born 1757 but cant find the gap yet and do not no how accurate it is.Frederick Wedge 1885-1934 married Ethel Duce Holdway 1895-1932, I think its through the holdways we are linked and the earliest Houldway I have is Stephen 1733/4 who married Ann Sweetapple.My great grandmothers number in the pedigree was 6808 and her fathers was 6807, these numbers relate to Ethel and her father Walter Holdway 1856-1947. Not sure where to go from here as I cannot obtain the part of the tree as I dont no who has it. |

It was great to discover your site on the web because, until now, the story of John WEST and Christ's Hospital seemed more like a legend in our family. I received from my father a chart with our pedigree but have never independantly confirmed it until now. I am actually within the yellow line in two different ways! My greatX3 grandfather (Charles TANNER) married Hannah NORTH (daughter of Mary and Daniel) and his grandson (my great grandfather), Charles Joseph TANNER, married Clara NORTH (the daughter of Robert NORTH, Hannah's brother). If that sounds confusing, the bottom line is that my great grandfather married his cousin, thus connecting the TANNER line twice with the NORTH/WEST family line.
