Loved your photos and story from Bowron Lake. We did the circuit a year ago in Sept. It snowed. It rained. It sunned. What a gorgeous land and you captured it well. My only recommendation would be to portage your canoes in old school way, on your shoulders, with a good yoke and pads. It's so much easier than using those carts in the mud!

Awesome photos and narrative. My brother and I were wanting to skin up to the winchester fire lookout and ride around the area for a couple days last winter, but it never happened because I was too busy with school to be able to coordinate time off from class and good weather. This upcoming winter we will have to make it happen though. These photos are getting me stoked just thinking about it! I read the story about the Picketts traverse in the winter in backcountry magazine. It was sick. That long exposure photo of Fury at night is incredible. My brother, friend, and I made a trip into the N. Picketts this past August and climbed Challenger and Luna, but weren't able to make it up Fury. Thinking about doing that in the winter is pretty damn intimidating. I love checking out your photos and reading your stories. Keep em coming!

I did not know Ben, but I had to post here as soon as I happened upon Ben's account of the June 1, 2002 Mt Baker climbing incident on his cascadeclassics website. I did not know Ben, Jason, or Josh, but had heard their names dropped around the Bellingham skiing/climbing scene during the few years I lived and played there. I remember hearing about their adventures while my friends and I were having our own during our brief years in the North Cascades.
I remember hearing about the accident that took Ben's life.
It was a shock to me when I discovered today that it was Ben who called in the rescue that retrieved my injured friend and I from the Park Glacier on Mt Baker on that day in June, 2002. I was the climber communicating in yells and hollers up to Ben on the summit. I don't know what would have happened to my friend and I if we would have had to spend the night on the mountain, but without question Ben and the Hummels genuinely saved us from much pain and suffering.
Thanks to you guys, and thanks to Ben for making that call. I am sorry I cannot thank him in person.

Cool stuff. I was looking for beta on some climbs when I came across your site. I thought to my self, "These guys look familiar". Sure enough, I new that I had run into you in the mountains before from you Maude West couloir TR. I was climbing with a friend on the standard route when we ran into you. You told us about how you all almost died while trying to ski the glacier inside of Mount St. Helens Anyway, it was a long ass time ago. It was when I first started climbing and you gave us ideas about climbs. All the climbs that you mentioned I have done, and they were all as awesome as you said they would be. I wanted to take this rare opportunity to thank you for the beginner’s beta you gave me. How often do you get to say thanks to strangers who helped kick start your climbing career?

Hi: So what are you going to call that last trip? North West Face Traverse? Looked like you had to hike around some rocks half way down? I hiked up to the summit at sunset and on the way back to my tent I was starteled by a strange red squirrel making a traverse of the ice cap. He stopped and looked at me and I did the same he continued on.Just below that summit rise on the way down I stuck my leg through, up to my knee in a hidden cravase and wondered how would that feel with tennis shoes? Glad to have those big ole leather boots!

Was wondering if you guys would like to round up for a trip up Pyramid Peak on mountain bikes in the fall? I think it's right around 6K of all single track climbing and maybe 30-40 miles? If we could rent or borrow a bike for Sky (does Troy have Ben's ride still?) we could introduce skisickness to 2wheelmadness. It would be good to catch up finally.

Hope all is well.

I am humbled to be writing to someone, or rather a group of someones, whose adventures I've been admiring from afar since 2001. I'm not family nor a friend, and I'll probably never meet any you. I'm just an old guy who got into kayaking and backcountry skiing in his 30s and was lucky enough to stumble upon your original site. I hadn't visited the Cascade Classics website since December of 2003. I'm about to make my first backcountry trip into the Goat Rocks, and it was inevitable that your trip reports came up in the email string. As I clicked the link, the sudden remembrance of Ben's passing struck a melancholy tone as I browsed the site again. I know that sounds trite compared to the loss of a lifelong friend or brother. However, what made it even sadder was the thought that maybe you had given up on the only religion I've ever been able to grasp-namely, spending time in the outdoors with close friends and family. And at the risk of belitting what you do, I am absolutely thrilled to see you are still at it and sharing the experience with unknown folks like myself. Sorry for the rambling, but I've been thinking about this for the last week, and I just discovered your new site. Thanks for carrying on and for continuing to share. I can think of no greater tribute.

Cheers,
Michael Carnes

It's been a long time since we did a trip together, there is this little area called Whistler/Blackcomb or Red Mountain that we should seek out for a halcyone reunion.
