Comments:In the last few days, a number of inappropriate posts for this guestbook have been removed. In spite of this, the posts continue to be made.

As of today, all entries to this guest book will be reviewed by a moderator prior to being posted for public viewing. Posts need to have a chess content and not be written in a manner that could be even slightly perceived as being an attack on any individual, group, or organization.

Comments:I was there! I lost my game that night. But Zoki the magician lives on. The guy gets out of nearly as many tight spots as Houdini himself. I would know--I've played the man many times and have often left shaking my head.

Even after retiring from playing tournaments, Zoki still dominates the local chess scene through his students. In years past it was Daniel Schwarz, Matt Zavortink and Tyler Wilken. Today it is Isaac Zhang and Ted Xiao. Schwarz and Zhang have even won Player of the Year!

Comments: The following is a true story and happened at the Hart center downtown at Wednesday night chess club meeting in 1994. There was a tournament going on and having crushed his opponent early, Zoran was watching a game in progress when a Cambodian fellow, that owned a downtown dining cafe around the corner from Weatherstone coffee shop, where the downtown chess players gathered during the rest of the week, came in holding a paper bag. He walked up behind Zoran and pulled out a .22 pistol out of the bag and was about to pop a cap in Zoran's third occipital to settle some bad blood between the two, when suddenly Zoran whipped around and in one motion disarmed the would-be assassin and took the gun right out of his hand. Just like he had eyes in the back of his head!
Now I have seen Zoki slip out of some hopeless positions and lost games before over the chessboard, but nothing as impressive as this anti-ninja defensive effort seen that night.
When the police finally arrived the two were having coffee together across the street at Carrows, like nothing happened!? True story

Comments:The first round of the US Championship will be played today at 2pm Central time (12noon Pacific). I am paired as black against GM Julio Becerra. You can follow the games live on the MonRoi website and the Internet Chess Club. Even if you can't log in when the games start (school or work), check them out when you can--each round will last 4-6 hours.

1. Go to the official website . Click on Live Games and then select the US Championship at the top of the list. You need to agree to their license by clicking on "Click Here to Accept License Terms" (small text near the top of the page). Select the correct round number and then choose a game.

2. Log into ICC with your username and password or go to to sign up for a free trial (14 days free if you've never used ICC before). After you logged in, go to the Window menu and select the Events list. The Internet Chess Club will relay five games live each day. Find the game you want to look at from the top of the list and click on the eyeball to observe it. Watch for live commentary by GMs and IMs!

If the ICC does not relay my game, you can still view it on the MonRoi website. After games are finished, you can vote on the best game for each day on the MonRoi site. I think you'll need to register on their website, but I don't know the details yet. The winner of the daily best game prize receives $100.

Finally, check out my daily BLOG on the ICC website. I have written two pieces so far and intend to write something (good or bad) after each round. For example, tomorrow's blog should have photos from the opening ceremony that begins in approximately 3 hours.

Comments:Hello from Chicago! The first round of the US Open was last night. There are about 270 players in the traditional 9-day (one game a day) schedule (and another 180+ signed up in advance for faster schedules). Since this is an open tournament with class prizes, the first round pairings feature rating differences of 500-600 points. Players 1797 and up played down while those below 1796 played stronger opponents.

NM Daniel Schwarz and I both defeated 1750s last night with black. We both had a little difficulty winning, but nothing too bad. It was nice to get our feet wet.

The first round of the Denker invitational championship began with speeches and photos this morning. Daniel Schwarz is the #2 seed in Denker and has white vs Kevin Guo (1914) of Missouri. The game is still in progress as I write this.

Some top US Open games are broadcast live on MonRoi and ICC websites (mine was last night). The Denker rounds are at 9am PDT. The evening US Open games start at 5pm PDT.

Comments:I have played chess for years, off and on. I'm a C/B tweener depending on how much I've played lately. I'm looking for a tournament for myself...with longer time controls...possibly the Swiss #16 if I can make that event.

I have two children who are learning how to play (ages 6 and 8). I would like to get them involved in some Action tournaments...or maybe some G/20 (etc.).

My children are taking daily lessons (four times a week) and should be ready for a tournament near the end of Summer.

We'll keep checking back for something that might suit us.
