mandy Hello Everyone, I hope that this email finds all of you and your families in good health and happiness in this festive season. I am doing well, as is my family; however, all of us have been coping with the recent passing of my grandmother, This past year has been full of changes and transitions, some that were expected and some not. I am still living in Victoria, but I recently arrived in Edmonton for the holidays. I am almost finished my degree at the University of Victoria and I think my long term plan, for now, is to move back to Edmonton once I have completed my studies. I am still seeing Clay, my boyfriend of almost two years, and our relationship has been great, more so now that we are able to see each other more often while I am in Edmonton. We are planning to take a long trip in September and I cannot wait, as I have the "travel bug" once again and the itch to visit other countries and cultures is very strong. As I mentioned before, my family is doing well considering the preset circumstances. We buried my grandma on Remembrance Day (Nov. 11) after her lengthy battle with lung cancer and while all of us are very sad we are also relieved that she is no longer in pain. My relationships with a few of my family members have changed significantly over this last year. I am amazed at how my siblings and cousins are growing up to be teens and young adults, which makes me feel a lot older and causes me to adjust the role that I play in their lives. I find that the quality of relationships that I have with the more dominant males in my family have also changed, in that I am noticing the inconsistencies in regards to males and females within my culture. This has a lot to do with my choice to date someone from outside of my culture, which my dad, brother and uncles do not agree with. This struggle has really raised my own awareness of my culture and has made me form closer bonds with other family members who also notice the inconsistencies in the treatment of men and women. Regardless, I am looking forward to this next year as I have a feeling that it will be spent working on these relationships so that they are based more on equality, and I will be done school, finally! AND, I get to spend the beginning of this year with special friends (Amy, Marcella, and hopefully Leslie), which I am very excited about. Well, I think I am done boring you guys, for now. I hope all of you have a very merry Christmas that is as free from commercialism as possible. I also hope that this coming year is full of love, positive changes, health, happiness, and success for all of you and your loved ones. ashley Well I don't even know how to explain the past week.... On a whim the girls and I decided to take a trip to Italy because they still don't have our program set up so we decided to take advantage of the free time to do some travelling. We had bought our train tickets and everything but we were offered a ride by the host brother of our South African neighbour Andrew to Nice so we could save some money. So we end up taking out tickets back and flying across France at 180km/hr with two crazy french guys (named Damien and Ludwig) 7hrs all the way to Nice. Poor Jen got car sick and we said at least 10 times "we're going to die!!!" We get to Nice and we find out that the tunnel at Monaco has caved in so we were nicely held hostage for 5 days at a beautiful summer villa in Provence by two crazy french guys. I have yet to see the movie, but I am told they are straight from "night at the roxbury". They took us boating and touring around, made fantastic meals and gave us plenty of wine to drink. I ended up getting 14 sp Anyway, I am still alive and well. If the weather holds we are going to the beach this weekend with Magalie. We should be starting class next week. I had to write a test today and it went really well, but I don't start classes until the 16th at least, so I have a little while to find my bearings and have some fun.
