| Comments: | Thanks for the great information! Because of the “Surgery for Pediatric Vocal Cord Paralysis: a Retrospective Review” article and your story, I gave Dr. Cotton a call. We are scheduled for vocal cord lateralization on Sept 11, 2003. My son Brandon 3 years old (BOD 3/4/00) was born with vocal cord paralysis and has had a trach since birth. Your story has helped me to prepare for the surgery. We are traveling all the way from Scottsdale, AZ, however, it well worth it.

I just lost a little boy at 12 weeks, he would have been my second child, May 27th. We went in for our first appointment due to insurance (new job), and went through all the normal stuff only to have no heartbeat at the ultrasound. We were shell-shocked. I know the pain and grief I felt, and my heartaches to imagine your grief. We are currently expecting again, and I am only 6 weeks. We go for a second ultrasound tomorrow to make sure everything is progressing as it should. I have a beautiful, healthy 3 1/2 year old, so I count my blessings every day, as do you. You are a beautiful little girl who just has God watching over you(and your sblings in heaven) You had an amazing recovery and as I read all abut you I had tears in my eyes not knowing what the last stories would be about. Deasr Sydneys parents, In january of 2004 we delivered our daughter who past away 2 days later.(we knew at 17 weeks we were going to loose her) We were told if she wwas not still born she would only live a matter of minuts.She was born on a Wednesday morning at 8:03 am and hung on like a champ untill 11:00pm friday night(living almost three full days) She was amazing and such a blessing. eight months later our three year old son was hit by a car.He was knocked out in a comma and flown to A trauma center He had a tramatic brain injury and broken pelvic. He layed in ICU i a coma for 10 days(The scariest 10 days of our lives. HE then was transfard to CHildrens hospitial where he was unresponsive had significate tone to his little body but his eyes would open. He was our mirical. Every day he would wake up alittle more and do something to show improvement(move a finger,then his arm,then smile and so on)One day I was pushing him in his whhel chair(about a month after his accident and I looked at him and said you are my buddy. He shook his head no(first time he moved his head from side to side)I amost cried(of joy that he turned is head) I said your not? He looke at me and said"Daddy's buddy) I cried and knew at theat second my son was going to be ok.) another two months at Childrens inpatient then he was outpatient for two months for therepys(those two months he stayed with us at ROnald MCDonald HOuse accross the street from the hospitial) He was home for Christmas and to celibrate his 4th birthday. We found out 5 months later we were having our third child. We were very excited yet very scared(from loosing our daughter only 15 before hand) We had lots of tests and many ulrasounds. We made it threw. I went into my OBs office at 37 weeks for a prenatel apt when He told me your live functions came back high. Go straight to the hospitial.(THey called John to meet me there nd he made arangments for our son) I drove right to the hospitial I got there at 1:00pmand they did an emergency CSection and our presious baby girl was born at 2:27pm.(wow very fast)John just made it in time but was unable to go into the OR with me. He Was with me at the doors then kisse me and said You will be Okay I love you. Our daughter was born(healthy) and given right to John and When I came out of Recovery and got to hold her as she was about 2 hours old John said to me her color does not look rigt( I was on so many meds I noticed nothing.) The nurses took her and by the next day she ws taken to A different hospitial to their NICU( same hospitial where my son was) so on CPAP and a vent I was not able to be with her(John went that day and I was still at our local hospitial another 3 days (He stayed with her) My mother came down and stayed at the hospitial with me.) She was born on a fridy (sept 2) and I got to be with her that following tuesday John came and got me and we went right back up there(our son with us) We were told it would be ablut a week or two that she would be there.(could be worse) Two days later on thursday she was released. She is now 2 days shy of a month old and doing wonderfull. SO where I thought I had a real rough year wow you are amazing and my heart goes out to you. Yellon and we too took the long trip to see Dr. Cotton in December '98 for a second opinion. I currently work at CHP. I love what I do. I see many kids with trachs and it's nice to be able to tell those parents, "I've been there too".

| Comments: | I just happened on this page and i want to tell you what a beautiful daughter you have. What a blessing. My water broke with my son D'Ante at 17 weeks and i had several doctors tell me to abort that he wouldn't make it--instead i left it to God, and he is still with us. He still has the trach, and a G-button. He also had chest tubes and the nissen surgery (because of the reflux) but thank God we are now on the final steps. He was well enough to come off of the ventilator last year and now the doctor is talking about removing his trach in April. I can't wait! He will be 5 years old then. It has been a long road, but seeing stories like yours reminds me that it is possible. Sometimes i see what a will he has to live and it makes me realize that the doctor's don't know everything. My son Enrique Moran (Little Ricky) was born at 28 weeks and had a Bilateral Vocal Cord paralysis and this was caused by intubation when he was born. But in 1 1/2 later he passed away he pulled it out one night when he was sleeping and I didint feel him.
My point is to be gratefull to god every single day for everything he has to offer you he must have a purpose for you Sydney. |

(she is 10 months old). our surgeons say they hope to have the trach removed in up to 3 years, and possibly off the ventilatior by her first birthday!! (in june of 2006). I was so happy to read your daughters story and it definatly inspired me that Rebecca will not need her trach forever, and good things will come from all of this surgery mess! lol. she was born with something called V.A.T.E.R.A.L. Association and has had 13 surgeries in her short life. 6 for her stomach, 2 open heart, and 1 to place her trach. I can tell you, I have almost given up hope on her a few times because things just looked so rough. all her doctors thought she would die. But sure enouvh, she pulled through and she is so happy and as healthy as she can be! Stories like your inspire me and give me hope. Thank you for sharing Syndey's story with the world. :) |

What a blessing when the Lord walks you through the storm and impresses upon us His greatness as He continues to perform miracles. Just as in the book of John when the deciples ask Him, "is this man blind because of his sins or his parents"? and Jesus replies, "it is neither, this man is blind so that the God's Glory could be done".

Sydney, I am so happy for you. Congratulations on having your trach removed. I can tell you have a very loving and caring mommy and daddy. My thoughts are with you and your family. Mommy and Daddy, I am a nurse, and work with children with tracheostomies. I have seen many families go through much of what you have. I had never heard of the particular procedure Syndey had done to close up the trach. I will definetly share this information with any families in the future whose child's trach has trouble healing. This seems to be more and more common, especially if the trach has been in for an extended period of time. What a nice story to read. I am happy everything worked out for Sydney. My daughter Emma is almost 3 yrs w/ a trach due to vocal cord paralysis. We too were told she would only have to have her Trach in for 2 yrs. Now w/ our last Dr's visit (Aug 15th) we were told 5-10 ys. So we too thought it was time for a second opinion. The new Dr told us that she would need surgery or her trach will never come out but that she could lose her voice for good. This was news to us?? We are now looking into our options as we had no idea that there was surgery out there to fix her condition??? I thank you so much for your story as you have given me so much hope and I can't wait to see what her future will hold!! Sydney is beautiful and I am so glad that she is doing great.
