| Comments: | Was stationed at Marine Barracks Kenitra as a Corporal in 1968. My wife, Liz, and I lived in town for a while and then moved on base toenlisted quarters next door to the CPO Club. We loved the train rides to Rabat and exploring the countryside. We didn't have the time to do anything when I was stationed at a remote site, Sidi Ayia, but things settled down when I was sent back mainside as a liaison NCO. We'd love to see it now. |

Left to go aboard the U.S.S. Hoist in spring of 1960. I remember the sights and sounds of downtown well. For an eighteen year old from the midwest, sure was an eye opener. Would like to hear from anyone that was there at the same time. I was never good at names, but faces I never forget. Some names I remember were John A. Brown, Eddie Fields, Charlie Lord and Jim Avitt. Maybe others will surface from time to time.

| Comments: | We were stationed in Sidi from May 1969 through Octaber 1969. My dad, Jim Yandle, was s CT and we lived in Kenitra waiting for housing. We did a lot of living in the short time there and I fondly remember all of the great members of tne Navy family who took good care of us after Dad fell, broke his leg, and had to be sent to Spain. We lived with a friend in Rabat until we could get back to the States. We did a lot of living in those few months. Rabat, Fez, Marrakesh, Volubalis and the list goes on. Thank you for all the great memories. Dad passed in 1999 and we relived our Navy memories often. I am, to this day, proud to say I was a Navy brat. Please feel free to contact me if you knew Dad.

Fear and loathing at Receivers Site ’77-'78. If you remembered your time at Sidi Yahia you didn’t live it. Eighteen years old and away from home for the first time. Good times; even the jarheads were great. In this age of Islam-o-phobia, gotta say the Moroccans were the most hospitable people I ever encountered in my travels. Thanks for the memories. |

in the Terminal Building. Loved the duty and the place, lived in Kenitra with my "girl friend" Sonia and commuted by bus back and forth. Went to Rabat every now and then for R and R, never made it to Tangiers or Casablance but did take a tour up into the Atlas mountains to Fez and the Roman Ruins at Volubalus. I caught hepititus A while there from eating seafood that came from the river instead of the sea. Developed a lifelong attraction to Moroccan food. |

Also worked as a disc jockey for Armed Forces Radio on base (AFRTS). Spent many nights at the EM club with two great bartenders Shorty and Slim (Moroccans). Also had great times at the Fleet Reserve Association club downtown Kenitra. Best damned duty I ever had in my four year hitch. Met some super guys while there and still correspond. | Comments: | Got my orders to NCS Sidi Yahia out of RM"A" School in Bainbride in 1965 with several other RM's from my class. Arrived as RMSN and made RM3. I worked in the Message Center at most all the stations and ended up as a final traffic checker. Days off were at the Fleet Reserve in Kenitra or at Mediah Beach. A lot of great memories. I still keep in touch with a few of the guys I was stationed with over there. When I left I went to Newport, RI and the USS Charles H. Roan DD-853 and then to Norfolk, VA on the USS Claude V. Ricketts DDG-5. I enjoy attending our ship reunions every two years. The next Ricketts reunion is in Jacksonville in May 2012. We hope to get the USS Charles Adams DDG-2 berthed in Jacksonville. I understand Mediah Beach is built up now and is a tourist destination with condos and hotels. Times change.. |

| Comments: | I've signed in here before, but after reading Woody's post I had a new memory. I arrived in April 1968, and like Woody, I was put in the chow hall while I waited for my security clearance. I recall the person in charge was a VERY Big man, 1st class petty officer Sabbs. He looked like a offensive lineman from a professional football team. Sabbs acted mean, but he really was a nice guy. I recall making cole slaw too, but we were not very discreet about what went into that dish. Worm in the cabbage?--grind it up. Needless to say, I never ate cole slaw. I also recall peeling tubs of potatos by hand everyday. Sometimes after a night in Kenitra, the early start at the chow hall was not fun. Good memories! Later this month, I am flying to California to reunite with others from Bravo Section. We meet every other year to recall our war stories. I really enjoy reading the comments from fellow CT's who were stationed in good ol Morocco. |

| Comments: | I was at Navcommsta Sidi Yahia from August 1969 to December 1970, as a CT ‘T’ brancher working in the ops building and living in the barracks. My first four months were spent messcooking, and staying with 5 other guys in the GenSer barracks in a room of our own; we sort of had our own private Navy for a time as no one bothered us there (!). I really enjoyed cooking and took over the salad bar, where I learned how to make a mean coleslaw from the salad cook. I still think about the bus stop in Kenitra, the crazy banter between the Marines and the street vendors, and the wild bus ride back to base in the dark. In the Ops building we stood a 2-2-2-80 watch schedule which meant we had about three days off every five days. I took regular train trips to Casablanca and Rabat, just to walk around and soak in the eastern ambience. Bought into a car with Paul Cheek and Dan Niblack and travelled regularly to Tangier, where we stayed at the Residence Bahia. We were cautioned not to eat the local food, but all of us did , feasting on bread, brochettes and tomatoes, and no one got sick. I arrived just after Woodstock, and while I was in Morocco things were changing mightily back in the states – Kent State, etc. – and there was quite a bit of generational friction on base. I was reluctant to go, and in some ways still have a mental foot planted firmly there in Morocco. I have never seen brighter stars at night anywhere. |

| Comments: | I was stationed at Sidi Yahia 1961 thru Feb 1963. Loved every day and particularly every night (in Kenitra). Many nights were spent running my bar tab at Mama's and a few other choice spots The two popular songs being played in every bar, by every bar girl named Jacqui or Jackie(depending on how intoxicated you were) was The Tokan's "THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT" and Gene Chandlers "THE DUKE OF EARL". Always had a good dinner at the Fleet Reserve, and enjoyed being young. Years later Morocco was described in PATTON as a combination of "The Bible and Hollywood". It was a memory I shall never forget, nor all the friends I made including "OMAR" our barracks house boy.

On our off nights, we were assigned to patrol the base with working dogs to prevent robberies. I was kinda small and the dog was much stronger than I was so for the entire watch, it was a contest of wills. I just looked at the base on Google Earth and it is exactly as I remember it. I can pick out the ops bldg, the chow hall, the bks where I lived and the dog kennels where our dogs were kept. Nice site you have started. Thanks. Brings back a lot of memories. |

| Comments: | My name is Ron Whisner and I was stationed in Kenitra from 10/1975 - 5/1977. I was originally a Photographers Mate and, through total immaturity, wound up working as a Master at Arms for Chief Glenn Moore at the enlisted barracks. Ehh, had an authority problem. Probably still do. LOL! Anyhow, like most of the postings that I have read on the site, Morocco still stays at the top of my most bestest memories in life. I still have bragging rights when telling current friends of the happenings while there. Momma's, the Green Door, Meknes, Fes, Michlefin and the 10 of us that rented the one room at the Hotel there for a mere $12.50 (50 durham) a night. I still have the receipt for it. Wow! Some of those guys were, Vic Nuzzo, Pat Weil mailto:kia-ora@att.net, Ron Martin mailto:ronmartin@winco.net, Phil McNally mailto:pmcnally@shawmut.com, Kenny Croy, Crazy Luis Charles the printer, Tom Schaloo (Schaleeze) AFRTS guy, Lisa Cagle mailto:blazergyrl@aol.com or mailto:lisa@lighterfootstep.com , civilian AFRTS dependant. She was my sweetheart! Her friend Tina. The guy Joe from the mess hall. What a place for memories! It's funny, my wife and I were talking the other night and I told her that Morocco is a place that we are going to go to for a vacation. Let everyone know that they can get on Googles Map site and see the base from the new satellite imigary they have. I still remember ordering pizza for delivery on base. We'd order one for one side of the barracks, anonymously, then another pizza for the other side of the barracks, for the 2nd floor, during the interim we'd have someone outside of the barracks hiding behind a dumpster, most of the time Pat Weil(man) or Ron (Squeaky) Martin. When the driver took one of the pizzas in the barracks whoever was outside would simply remove one of the other pizzas from the golf cart delivery truck, and we'd meet them in the barracks for free pizza. What can I say? We only made $220.00 a month. If anyone has other addresses please forward them to me at mailto:evngrnr@yahoo.com . I also have allot of snail mail addresses and telephone numbers for others that were there if anyone wants them. Aside from that, Thanks again for a place to start for all others to gather. You take care!

Some of the senior Radiomen I remember from CAMS are RMCS Huntsman, RMCS Jordan, RMC Barger, RMC Heard, RMC Reich, and RM2 Kirkbride. Some of the other gents I remember from the COMMSTA were RMC Corbin, RM1 Ostrom,RM1 Orr, RM1 Schofield, and RM1 Platzke. These were the best communicators collectively that I ever had the pleasure to serve with throughout my entire career. Went on to make Chief, Warrant and LDO in my career. I attribute a lot of that success to the mryiad things I learned from the superb set of communicators listed in this post. NCS Morocco was a fabulous tour of duty!

| Comments: | I was stationed in Bouknadel/Sidi Yahia from May 1962 till November 1963. I recorded about 30 minutes of 8MM film that I just recently converted to a DVD. I also recorded the audio of all of the USO shows that we saw. There was no restrictions back then. One of our communication exercises was a mobile set up on the palace grounds. Hassan was in Washington talking to President Kennedy, so we never got to meet him. I came back to Norfolk the day Kennedy was shot and was on the Ship assigned to his usage when the word came in on the PA system. If anyone is interested in any of the recordings I have, let me know. |

| Comments: | Can anyone out there remember a small naval comm. base in Morocco called Sidi Aiyeia (not sure of spelling)? My Father was CTCO Donald G. Salak and we were stationed there in 1964 to 1966. I pitched on the baseball team (Athletics) and my older brother was the Left Fielder for the Cubs i believe. His coach was Mr. Wiggins. he had two sons who also played on the team i.e. Brian and Julius. I believe the Commander name was Beebe (spelling?) |

| Comments: | Not really sure why but been thinking of this place a lot lately. Arrived in 1977 and left in late 1979. Was stationed at Bukandel as part of the Marine Guard Company. Did a search yesterday to see if I could find the place and sure enough here it is - http://www.flickr.com/photos/27354221@N05/. These are just map pics I exported but if you were there you'll remember the place!
I use to spend all my free time running the parameter and could to the 5+ miles in around 22 min flat out. I use to also hang out in the Navy photo lab developing my pictures. I remember the first time I signed off on the security checklist and saw - photo lab. I was like what!!! So this guy in the Navy taught me everything I needed to know to do all my own developing. It was like me own little get away where no one would bug me!. I had a few great friends that I've never talked with after leaving and have often wondered how they made out. Brian Hermiston from Ohio, Roger Newman from New Jersey, Snooze from Ohio and my best buddy Kim (Navy Seebee, PJ Lamberson from Peoria IL (loved the Ozark Mountains), one of the toughest Marines I've ever met but what a great heart. Well thanks for putting this site up and if anyone from this period would like to BS just send me a a quick email! Take care... |

| Comments: | I was stationed at Sidi Yahia in 1969 - 1970. I worked down by the transmitter field at the end of the road. Never worked or even saw the inside of the "Main building" on base. I worked with a marine, and two other Navy fellows. (Wish I could remember their names). It was never more than the 4 of us during our "watch".
I arrived as a CTOSN and left as a CTO3. While there I lived off base with my wife in a little villa in Kenitra. I remember catching the grey bus in Kenitra in front of a place where Americans played bingo one or two nights a week. I remember that it had a couple of slot machines inside as well. I remember shopping at the Moroccan Air Base in Kenitra? I also remember the laughs we had when we read that the NY Times put out a story about "spy's" stationed in Morocco. It was comical reading follow up stories from the American and Moroccan governments as they tried to explain us away. If anyone reading this remembers me, please feel free to send me a note via email Bob |

| Comments: | My first duty station along with at least half of my RM"A" school class was NCS SidiYahia Morocco. I served there from 61-65. We single RMs were housed in 4-man cubicles seperated by our lockers. Don't remember te Bldg Number but the next building heading towards the Comm Bldg was the sick bay. I married an Irish girl in 64 just before leaving NHY and lived off base. I served under Capts Wieer, Downes and Darby. I remember there was a Female Lt named Buriani, one of the fewe female military there. I was one of the first CAMS operators there. I lived offbase at Madam Atancias Apt bldg. 40 buck a month. They used to bus girls in from Rabat some weekends to the EM club for dances. The bus ran back and forth between Sidi and NAS Kenitra, stopping at Mama's club. We junior enlisted types used to supplement Marine guards on the fenceline. We carried a flashlight with weak batteries, a whistle with no ball and a clipbord and billyclub hanging off the guard belt!. Pretty desolate at midnight! I used to get my laundry done at the Lavoblanc next to the Fleet Club in Kenitra. In those days, Cigs were 20 cents a pack, Heinekins beer was 20 cents a bottle, gas was 19 cents a gallon on base. We used chits in the club. We used to stand in line to fill out pay chits, move on down to the pay table to cash-in the chit! Other than having the honor of working with RMCS Keight and Capt R.S.Downes, who started the CAMS concept, I enjoyed being an off-line crypto operator. I also sat Kilo CW a few times. In off-time, I plunked on my guitar with a few barracks maktes or went to the beach just up from the Sebu river. My favorite food memory is the almost grapefruit sized oranges from thelocal market. The skin peeled off almost in one piece and they were so juicy. We had to use a capful of bleach in a gal of wate to wash our fruit and veggies, otherwise, they were super. The people in those days were so friendly and curious. Always smiling.
If any of you remember the same time period, drop me an email please. |

| Comments: | Arrived at Sidi Yahia as an ETN3 in July 76 and left as part of the base close down crew in November 77. Wor5ked in the comm center as a crypto tech and then when the XO discovered that I was qualified as a life guard, he had me pulled out of the ET Shop and I spent the summer lifeguarding the base pool. What a riot, just sitting in the sun all day. It really ticked off my comms division officer! I worked with ET3 Joe Reid and the two of us bought backpacks and caught a flight up to Rota for a 30 Eurail trip around Europe. That was some great fun. A LT Pat McArdle was the Special Services officer and she wanted to plan a ski trip to Oukaimeden in the Atlas Mts. south of Marrakech. I had taught snow skiing at a resort when I was in high school and she offered to let me go for free if I would give ski lessons on a day and help to drive one of the vans. This was a no-brainer for me, so I packed my gear and went. While we were at the hotel on the ski hill, we met this group of British Special Forces guys that were doing some ski training. By the time the drinking got done that night we very nearly got thrown out of the hotel. These guys were rapelling out of the windows in their rooms.
The craziest thing I remember was one night driving back to Sidi from the bars in Kenitra with Joe Reid. He pulled his car off the road across the street from this little police station that was about half-way between Kenitra and Sidi... got out and told me to get in the drivers seat... I'm wondering why when suddenly he runs across the road, climbs over the security fence, goes up to the flag pole, whips out his pocket knife, cuts the cord and pulls down the Moroccan flag. He then bolts out of there like his ass is on fire screaming at me to DRIVE! We got back to the base and for the next couple of days I was just sure that the Gendarmes were going to come and take us away... Joe didn't want to keep the flag in his room so he gave it to me to hide and I didn't feel much better about having it either, so I gave it to an RM3 Belinda Cauthon that I was nuts about, which really pissed off Joe after he risked getting it in the first place. Ah the times and to be that young and reckless again! |

Old Navy No. 214, remember it just as if it were yesterday. I served from 7/62 to 7/64, mostly in the legal office and mostly with intelligence. I fondly remember the steaming nights when the horrible smell from the paper factory disrupted everyone's sleep; and those intolerable hot night when most of us slept outside where it was cooler. AC? Hah, nothing of the sort existed back them for us in the old barracks. Like taking weekend excursions to Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier (I was invited by the pasha and Betty Hutton to attend her xmas party--had duty that weekend, too bad, too. Remember 11/63 when JFK was assassinated, and the base was close down for one week--no liberty, no going off base, no such activities allowed. Full alert. Remember Ground Defenses practice days? Ugh. I still use my Moroccan Arabic and my broken French once in a while; not too often. Yes, I remember the good times and the bad times, and have all sorts of war stories to relate, but memories will keep me remembering. Signing off now, leela si ida |

Went from Sidi to CT "C" school at Hq NSG in Washington then to TUSLOG Det 12, Istanbul. Out and home and into banking after college. After 19 year break-in-service, enlisted in USAFR and did 20 years in 908 Civil Engineers and retired as SMSgt. in '99. Retired from banking 12/2004. Fond memories from Sidi. Boar hunting in the Atlas mountains, the mad dash from the bakery in Kenitra to catch the last bus back to the base, winding up an old TTY shaft bearing by blowing on the edge with the compressed air hose, then drop it on the floor outside the shop. Didn't take folks long to learn what that rising, high-pitched squeal foretold. |

That was July '63 and was there until Feb '65. I have seen two guys that I served with in this dreambook and I will contact both of them. Dwaine Rich and Charles Smart.still wonder about is Dave Lattus (Ky), John Depetrillo (NY), and John Skidmore (TX). It was a good time with many memories. Some bad, (I was in the theater when it was announced that Pres Kennedy was assassinated)some good (Great trips to Tangiers and it's night life). I worked in the TTY Relay in Cryptography and later was responsible for destroying ALL classified material by burning. As if it wasn't hot enough, I had to run the blast furnace just south of the ballfield. I rememer the day I arrive (in dress blues) when I walked out of the airplane, the heat hit me like a ton of bricks. After my tour was done, I was assigned to the USS Rich (DD-820) until I got out in Oct '66. I had a Med Cruise, North Atlantic Cruise, and another Med Cruise that went thru the Suez Canal, Red Sea, down the east coast of Africa and crossed the equator (now a shellback). If I have jogged any memories, give me a buzz. Again, this is a great site. La Bes Homdulla |

| Comments: | I arrived at Port in June, 1962 as an AGAN from A & C school and left as an AG2 in July, 1964, at which time I was assigned to NAS Corpus Christi, TX. I worked at the Rawin site along the golf course for AG1 Don Swanberg. I started in Don Smith's section and replaced him when he shipped out. Smitty might be remembered for his downtime which he spent as a country music DJ on the radio station. I spent the last months of my tour in the Weather Center crypto section. I enjoyed my time there and met some really great guys. |

| Comments: | I was stationed at NAVCOMSTA Morocco 9/25/67 to 10/18/68. I was a CYN3 and a crypto operator. We used to hang around a bar in Kenitra owend by John Pierre, my buddy and I made a reel to reel tape from all his 45's his sister would send over to him and John Pierre played it all the time in the bar. We used to get wind of the "Ground Defense" drills and go toa 1st class's house, sit in the back yard and drink miller high life while the rest of the base ran around with their helmuts and rifles LOL. Were the moroccains still stealing the cables from the transmission yard then? All in all it was a learing experience. Always appreciate the USA after that... |

| Comments: | Wow, small world - big memories. I was surfing thru some of the old NCS Morocco stuff and found this dreambook. Talk about memories. I was at NCS in the 70's between tech control and CAMS. Chief Ski's section. Tech control taught me how to flip a knot in a patchcord. I recognize names like Levasseur, Lybarger, Kelly, Trujillo, Lionetti, Ebricht and who can forget Herkamoe, Tator and Shrimpshire. I also looked up the base on Goggle earth and recognize most of the buildings. Seen the old homestead I lived at. Talk about old memories. Take care. |

| Comments: | I went to NCS Sidi Yahia April 1963 right out of Class "A"
Radioman School. My orders read Nea Macri, Greece but nobody knew where that was. There was about 35 of us from Radioman Class A And B that were sent to Greece. Some of us were TDY to Morocco, some to Naples and the rest to Roto Spain. After 6 months there we all met up in nEA mACKRI, gREECE. I have a Plank Owner Certificate because I was there when it was commissioned. I was there for 18 Months. I then went aboard the USS Long Beach, CGN-9, Nuclear Power Crusier. I got out in 1965. |

| Comments: | I remember my first deployment from the states directly out of radioman "A" school in San Diego Calif. It was July 1963 when I got my orders for Navcomsta Morocco. The biggest part of my class ended up going to Navcomsta Guam. I remember asking for embassy duty in England, but my shipmate got that. I was leary at first, but then found that duty wasn't so bad. I was an RMSN and got assigned to the tty relay in the cryptography room. I can remember the saying on messages being routed back then "When in doubt, dual route. Navcomsta Washington D.C. and RUECC tare. after approx 6 months, I made RM3 and was assigned to the proof test. My job was to make sure messages were delivered properly. We were busy all the time. I left there in Feb. 1965 and went aboard the USS Charles P. Cecil DD835 out of New port R.I.. I left the Navy in Sept 1966. I now have 3 children and 7 grandchildren. It's been a great life. |

Aug 66 - Nov 67. Great times. Worked in the basement in Control. Made RM3 there. Worked with RM1 Gordon Burns (Made contact with him later in the 70's in the Carolinas), Cube mate Charlie Hildreth from Glouchest MA I believe. Lots of poker and EM Club in Kenitra. Beach at Bouk. I thought if the Navy was like this all over I was going to be a lifer. I went from Sidi to Puerto Rico so it wasn't so bad. If I hadn't got married I would have stayed in. Congrats to all you who served. I heard Morrocco was still pretty good place to visit. |

| Comments: | Only saw 1 guy who was there (NCS Sidi Yahia) same time as me. I arrived Aug 1952, left Aug 1955. Saw everything to do with the return of French Morocco (plus Spanish Morocco, plus International Zone of Tangiers) to the Moroccan Sultan ben Youssef who had been exiled to Madigascar by the French and finally reinstated in 1955.
We were first whitehats to staff NCS Sidi, had a choice between Sidi and Boukanadel. I wound up at Receivers after a short stint in the Terminal Bldg doing CW Fleet Broadcasts using Wheatstone Bridge (CW typing) and Bohme Keying Head (transmitting code down to Bouk for broadcast to fleet on pre-set scheds). Liked working at Receivers. Back in the boondocks behind the NavSta. Sat Fleet Ship-Shore circuits sending/receiving CW messages from 6th Fleet vessels, others transiting the Atlantic on route to/returning from Med. Used to chat regularly with NCS Guam, Pearl, SanFran, Washington and dozens of other NavStas scattered throughout the world. Lucked out and was sent to Army Signal School in Germany, 7718th USAREUR Sig School, Ansbach, Germany, to attend 12 week course in Field Communications Equipment maintenance. Trouble was all the equipment we trained on was Army Field equipment, nothing from the Navy at all, but we had a ball. Two other whitehats went with me, Bob (Guy)Stewart and Sam Ragusa, Manhattan, all three of us were Radiomen. Travelled the entire Med area on TAD trips to repair radio and teletype equipment at a huge variety of Navy shore commstas. Etheopia was furthest east, Gibraltar furthest north, African coast furthest west. Great fun, hopping rides on NavAir flights and living free of direct supervision. Had a ball, a blast, a helluva time. Remember all the stress times as well ~ Arabs stopping my car in the middle of the night on some god-forsaken black as pitch roads, maybe between Casablanca and Sidi or Tangiers and Sidi. We kept several US Flags in the car to show the Arabs ~ they were looking for Frenchmen/women to kill. Big revolutionary times back then. Many too many stories to tell here. Anyone that might be as old as dirt (like me) and/or just want to chat about North Africa and/or Sidi or NAF Pt Lyautey, please feel free to drop me a note. I finished up with a grand total of 48+ years combining US Navy, US Army and Department of the Army time before hanging it up a couple of years ago. Take care. Vic |

| Comments: | Was in Sidi Yahia as an "R" brancher in Bravo section from 3/68 until 8/69. Some memories include working in the chow hall while waiting for my clearance. First class Sabs was in charge. He "acted" mean, but I really liked the guy. Made lots of friends while there and probably spent too much time in town "enjoying" liberty. But, those are fond memories.
Several years ago, some guys from Bravo got together and now we reunite every other year. Included are Joe Cross, Bruce Martin, Art Benson, Jim Wilson, Ed Heinsohn, Lee Harold, Joe and Carolyn Schwab, and Dan Flentge. We have found other guys, including Ron Swanson and Ralph Dorsey and hope they will join us at our next reunion. Was just in touch with Joe Savino too. Although Joe was not in Bravo, he was a good friend. I hope he too can join us someday. It has been fun reading all the stories here. Sure brings back some fun memories.--ziggy |

My home was in Rabat, but I spent much of my time with my school friends either at Bouknadel, Media or Kenitra on and off base. As I recall, it was just a 60 kilometer trip up the highway to Kenitra on that suicide 3 lane road without speed limits! Played flag football with the base teams, usually getting beat the worse by the marines. What a find! Never thought I'd find anyone from my past! Thank-you |

| Comments: | Dan, this is a very good book you set up. I lived aboard NCS, Sidi Yahia from 7/69 - 7/71 and went to Kenitra High School at NTC. Mainly kept busy playing sports (football, wrestling and baseball), and Boy Scouts. We always had a great time on sports road trips to Spain (Rota, Torrejon, and Seville), for wrestling and baseball. We played football against the Marines and Sailors. My sophpmore year we went 5-4 which was pretty good for a bunch of teenagers. We'd hang out the free movies and at the EM club pin-ball machines/snack bar until the managers threw us out. I also made spare cash cleaning M-14s and .45s for the Marine sentries. My favorite characters were "puerto-roccan" the liberty bus driver and Scary Gary the Shore Patrol sailor that had to ride with us on the school bus to keep us in check. In '71, we missed 2+ weeks of school because of the floods that blocked the roads between Kenitra and Sidi. I joined the Marine Corps years later and retired in '99 after 23 years. Morocco was a pretty cool place to grow up for a 15 year old - - at least for 2 years anyway.

Was an ET2 and spent most of time either in the tower comm spaces ro out working on the transmitter/receiver buildings. Really enjoyed many nights and the Acey/Duecy club, especially with those bands that SS hired in on three months stints. Worked with ET2 Scully, ETc Davis and many others, names excape me right now.
Left in 71 and went back to Vietnam with the Naval Advisory Group until the cease fire in Feb 73. I then returned to Morocco in Apr 73 and was stationed at the Bouk transmitter site until Jul 76. That place was a blast, small and knew everybody. Once I start to remember some of the people's names I'll come back with more info. Keep up the good work with the site. Lou |

| Comments: | You may have known my father, he worked at the Terminal Building in 1957-58 and then retired to Australia. He was on the USS Honolulu when it was damaged at Pearl Harbor. He was at Okinawa for the landings on the USS Tazwell. I was only 14 at Sidi Yahia. I cleaned M1 Rifles for pocket money at the Marine Barracks. It was 135 degrees when the sirocco wind blew.
I attended school at Sidi Slimane. One day we heard a loud bang and smoke poured into the air. The smoke was from the flight line where armed B-47s were parked. Soon buses came to our school and we were headed ot Sidi Yahia. The air base was evacuated to Navy 214. It was very crowded until the fires were out and everyone left. One day the Marines headed out to the perimeter and everything was sealed. Algerians rebels were spotted near the base. They were after the weapons. Air Force low passes sent them away. We had been completely surrounded. The sentry posts went from one Marine to two, plus a Moroccan soldier and a French sailor for a few weeks. Even the white hats carried weapons for a while. I was stationed on the Soviet Sector Border in Germany, in the 70's as a tank platoon leader. I later served in the 82nd Airborne. It's good to read about those guys I must have seen so many years ago in Morocco. Steve Taylor |
