| I just returned in July from a 14 month rotation to Iraq with the 87th Engineer Company, 8th Engineer Battalion. We were fortunate enough to do several types of engineer misssions, such as deliberate breaches of Heavily IED'd roads and fougasse's clearing palm groves of booby traps. I am the current Ops SGT for the company and was just looking into the 87th's history. You guys have alot of great photo's on here. Thanks for your service to our country. |

| Hello John, I'm writing for my husband Juan Martinez. This is our e-mail address and you can contact us here. He would like to thank you for this engineer site. He was so happy to get it. I will get with my son JR. and send you some pictures of Juan so that you can set up something for him so that other friend from his unit can see. He would like to get some more information on Richard Conners. He remembers him very well and also he talks about a Sgt. Tobbs. Our son is also in the military. He is in Korea and will be home in Dec. He served 2 tours in Iqra. He made his whole life military. Thank you again for this info and you will be hearing from us soon. Wonderful job done on this site. |

| I wrote earlier about my brother, Jim Schuler. I have an additional mission. I am writing a book about veterans, to be published next Memorial Day by Perseus Publishing. The inspiration for the book is my brother, who was a combat engineer in Vietnam. Jim served three tours: 1st Engineer Battalion (66-67), 87th Engineer Battalion (68-69), and 815th Engineer Battalion (71). Jim suffered from PTSD, alcoholism, and other problems, and died in 2001. I am interested in speaking with or emailing army engineers who served in Vietnam. The goal of my book is to raise awareness and to promote better services for veterans. I’d love to hear from you. Catherine Whitney. E-mail: catherinewhitney@mac.com. |

| My brother Jim Schuler was with the 87th, assigned to the 199th, in 68 and 69. Jim died in 2001, and we're looking for anyone who might have known him in Vietnam. I think he did constuction, lan clearing, and was a dump truck driver. Thanks. Love this site and the photos. Catherine |

//http://rehicks@prodigy john, i love the site.my name is raymond (ray) hicks. i was in nam my first tour from july 15th 1967-july 10th 1967 in the 175thengineer co. 196th lib in chu-lia.i was transfered to the 87th engineer co. 199th lib on july 10th. we got there about midnight going through long bihn in a convoy from the airbase at ton-sanuet( excust spelling) where i was till the end of the tour july 1968. i made a lot of friends at first but when it seemed that they would shortly die after befriending me i quit making friends and made aquaintances. i drove a duce and half dump dailey between long bihn and bihn chan south of siagon near the pineapple grove. during tet i was at the race track and the fish net factory. i originally thought i had gotton through nam unscaved but that is not so. so many died while i lived. many who went where i was to go but couldn't i thought i had burried those thoughts so deep they would never come out again but after 30 some odd years they busted out. In dreams i can not remember, in superer alertness, i sleep with knives, i am always looking for something to happen. i cry alot if i see a combat movie i cannot watch movies about nam. i can not even remember my buddies from nam's names. i am filing a claim for ptsd but can not remember names, times, or where. if any of your readers remember me or can help i would appreciate it. i do love your site and thanks. ray hicks rehicks@prodigy.net |

| I was with the 87th Engineers from Sept. 1969 'til the unit went home in 1970 and I was transferred to an artillery unit to finish my tour. I helped build base camps (fsb. Crystal, poured cement pads at Xuan Loc, cut LZ's, and did a variety of demo work to include blowing 55 gal. drums in half to be used as shitters. Our squad leader for much of the time was E-6 Henry Turner. Some of my friends were Milton Escobar (from P.R.), Lloyd Thompson Jr., Mike Loss, Tom Meringer, Mat Quackenbush, Rob Pincney, and Sgt. Somerindyke (a Joe Namath look-alike from somewhere in New York). I also was buddies with Steve Shoun from Goose Holler, Tennessee. I asked him where Goose Holler was and Steve told me it was right outside of Bean Station (that cleared it up for me). I was very lucky in that I wasn't hurt during my tour and most of my friends survived. I'm very sorry for those that weren't so lucky. |

//http://www.diggerhistory.info In answer to your question on my guestbook, Yes there were Australian Engineers in Vietnam. //http://tishdott@aol John: I was originally with E 3/7 199th. After being wounded on 02/26/67 I was assigned to the 87th on light duty around mid April '67. Stayed there until Oct. I along with some other wounded, became cement specialists when they started pouring slabs for the barracks that were to come. My nickname was "dottie" because of the many dark schrapnel scars on my legs. The others in my group were, Slugger, Shovel, Pick, and Polly. Don't even remember their real names. | John, Welcome Home! Good to have you on the board. What Fun! You make a person think and try to remember. Your second photo, I believe was on the front page of the Stars and Stripes Newspaper. It was taken of a CO from D/5/12 just east of FSB Chris. After the CO got hit, the C&C chopter landed and dusted him off. That is how the Major, the first person on the left got into the photo. That is also how the photo got taken. The guy with the camera jumped out of the chopter, took the picture and got back on. I am trying to come up with the names for you. Sure wish I knew how to get the radio logs we kept. Keep in touch. Stubby Smith, Jack B, Bill Dodge, and myself will come over for catfish or maybe you should come to Wisconsin and I could make you Smelt, a small fish found in the Great Lakes, now pass the Nouh Mon Sauce and lets have a beer. I remember a kid named Brooks, he made Sp5 and was one of the best grader operators I ever met. We also had a kid that got killed while loading the concret mixer in the motor pool. They were putting in a dead man and his front end loader slipped in the hole for the deadman. He was usuakky hot rodding. I also remember a kid I think his name was Bumster. He always had VD and he was allways on extra duty fixing flat tires all night. There was and E-6 we called blades ( he had a 3:00 sahadow) I think he transfered in from the 25th Div. I also heard he got killed later on. I still see alot of the guys faces, but can't put a name to them. I lived in the squad room in the Hq's building. I shared the room with a read headed equip operator. I think his name was Sanders.I remember thaking the bulldozers and water purification units to forward areas many times, but I think you are mistaken about airlifting the D-7's. They are to heavy for any air cranes. We signed for and received a D-5 dozzer from the 5th Special forces. We took it ionto forward areas many times. We had the remove the tracks and blade and lift them seperately. I remember this because on one such trip we had a new 2Lt. He was in a hurry and wouldn't let us wrap the blades and tracks with sandbags. The tracks and balde fell and they are still looking for the remains. I also remember a kid named Dorsey who had been shot by his Plt Ldr. ( acidently while cleaning his .45) Will close for now. Let's keep in touch. |

| Wednesday 10/29/2003 6:41:12pm Name: City/Country: Apopka, Fl....(Orlando) Whew...Ft. Benning, Shelby, the ship Pope to Nam...that was some time...The week before we went to Shelby, I and a buddy took my '62 Pontiac to Shelby from Ft. Benning and hitch hiked back that same weekend..Then when we went the following weekend in convoy, we had "wheels"...cool times.... Nam...we slept in 8 man tents on cots. I would go on search and destroy missions with the infintry carrying explosives..C4...good for heating up C rations...did that for 3 months... Drove the "low boy" tractor trailer for a month back and forth to Siagon for supplies....easy work.....but my love was the heavy equipment..... We started to build barricks,,concret slabs were being poured and I had the great job of operating the front end loader....I was there a total of six months....On June day in '67 I was operating the front end loader, scooping up a load of gravel, dumping it into a hugh cement mixer, then run for a load of gravel, and dump it into the mixer....Working fast, and somewhat boring,,,I went back too far and backed into a ditch and turned the loader over, causing server injuries...I knew I was dying, requested a priest for last rights..and remember slowly blacking out, couldn't catch any air....flashing back and seeing my life and parents and thinking of them, not to pity me....Somehow, I survived the 8 hours of surgery and a month later went to Japan,,slipped into a coma, came out..then on to Valley Forge Army Hospital for 10 months...Right side was paralized..some nerves came back, and I can walk with a brace and cane..June 67 to Aug68..........Aug 69 bang,,,car accident, burns and two years in the hospital...I survived that and eventually married, two girls, now 31 and 30...Hobbies: Golf(6hcp), Boating, Cars, RV, NASCAR,motorcycles, happy hour, beach.. I think I'm still a little crazy but in a much "slower pace". I only had a small circle of friends, but if anyone wants to say hello, here I am........Ray Jenny,407-399-2150..Orlando, Fl....God Bless |

| I don't know if you remember me , I was also one of the Originals but I am not in your Photo . I was from Brooklyn, N.Y. My nickname was "TURK" Sgt . Ellis gave me that name . I was a demo man and very good friends with Ronnie Klentzin , and Dave(Candy) Kandefer who was a Grader Operator . My demo team , SP5 Chandler, SP4 Damstra and myself , were the first in the 87th to recieve the Army Comendation Medal for Valor . We were brought back from the boonies to Long Bhin to recieve the Medal . I came down with Bleeding Ulcers and left in May of 1967 , after being in the 24th Evac. for 3 weeks . I have lots of photos of us on the Pope , and the Base Camp Tent City . Please contact me and I will send them to you . When I saw your Company Photo I stepped back in time . It seems like yesterday I can't believe it was 37 years ago . I hope you or some of the other guys remember me . Its great that you gave the underrated 87th some recognition . Thank You |
