Comments:Hello Ron,
To answer your question no footage of Jonathan, either on video, film or even home movie is known to survive, it has all been destroyed or lost including the Old Grey whistle Test performances, I keep hoping somebody will find some, but so far nothing has turned up.

It is time for action!
If you like me adore the music of Jonathan Kelly and wait with anxious anticipation on a new release then it is about time all of us made it happen!

Now if B.G.O. records can release four of his recordings then what's to say they will not release some more? What they need most of all I think is to hear from his fans, demanding more of his music! We have all seen him live of late and we all know just how good his new songs are so I urge you all to get writing to Beat Goes On records asking when his new songs are going to be released? The more of us that do it the greater the chance that the record company will sit up and listen. It stands to reason. They want sales and the more of us that show an interest the quicker they will react!
If you really do love the music of J.K. you will respond to this and get the ball rolling. let's face it would you not be tempted to buy a new album with songs like this on it!

* The Orange & The Green ( Eileen.)
* Hummingbird
* I've been Down That Road You're On
* Mona & Me
* Madeleine Re-visited
* Peals Of Thunder
* Young & Free
* No words
* A Friend Is A friend
* Thank You

And many, many, more.

GET WRITING NOW!

Firt picked up an album in about '76 and it was alway a mystery to me. Such great music. Always on my turntable and I never found any info at all about who Jonathan Kelly's Outside were. Now, thanks to your work, I have some idea.

I long ago left England and live in the US. I hope I get the chance to see Jonathan live either here or in the UK.

Comments:Just wanted to add that I throughly enjoyed Jonathan's performance at Middlewich. It was such a treat to hear him play the grand piano too, and I am sure his voice is no different now than thirty years ago. I feel very previledged too that Jonathan came back to the Middlewich festival.. the church was a very interesting location, and I was doubtful how it would work.... but I soon made the judgement that it was a superb venue, as like Frank ( my brother) has said he got everyone's full attention, and it added a whole new dimension. I love the fact that Jonathan will sing whatever anyone requests, and I love the way he always has a few new ones which he treats us with. I do hope there will be another concert in the pipeline somewhere soon? What a brilliant night. I have limited access to the internet unfortunately , so this is the reason my comments are late, but I am still buzzing from the great evening ... he leaves such a great impression after each concert a delightfully talented guy.

Comments:I have had the pleasure of seeing Jonathan perform at least four times in the last few years and yet every concert is a new experience. This gig was no exception and in a formal setting that because of the warmth of the man soon became very informal this was a hugely memorable nights entertainment. He seemed so at peace with the World and the acoustics and the intimacy of the surroundings made for a delightful musical cocktail.

It is a pity there were not so many people there but it some ways this is why it was so personal. In a church with no beer, people were fully focused and this aided Jon in his attempts to convey the quality of his writing and we all felt humbled and very honoured to have born witness to this exceptional event.

Jonathan was at his most relaxed and free from the absence of a few drunken yobs perhaps a church is a fitting venue afterall? All I know is that I have never had so much fun in one for as long as I can remember!

Well Jonathan played Middlewich and it was certainly a memorable night, a memorable day for me in fact, due to various problems. It was a special night in wonderful surroundings which we really enjoyed and it was great to see Frank & Rung Weston again and our old friends Steve & Kath Brown whoose children preformed a duet with Jonathan, I'll be updating the site soon with photos and news from the gig, but I wondered if anyone who was there would like to write a review for the site? If I write it I'll be accused of being biased.

Does this stand the test of time or what? Like many others have I wondered what became of Jonathan and as you do these days looked on Google and quickly discovered this fantastic web site. Well done Gerald! I hope I can get to see Jonathan soon. Have you considered the Picturedrome in Holmfirth? Great venue.

Thanks for your efforts in creating this site. I looked on the net a few years ago and it was as if Jonathan hadn't existed.
Just wanted to say a big thankyou to Jonathan for the pleasure his music has given me. I saw Jonathan supporting the Strawbs at the Wyvern Theatre Swindon & I was totally entranced by him - voice & guitar perfection & I immeadiately went out & bought TATH - which still gets a vinyl airing from time to time.
I also play guitar & Cursed Anna has been a party piece of mine ever since (a pale imitation though).
I look forward to the possibilty of seeing/ hearing Jonathan again & must buy a copy of the 70's bootleg.
Thankyou & Best Wishes - Derek

Thanks first of all for the wonderful website. I have searched for years for news of Jonathan. I remember watching OGWT and Jonathan was the first of my musical heroes that my father approved of. Saw Jonathan at Darlington Civic with two friends whom I'd converted.
I've been through the mill a bit in recent years and found that friends, family and music can get you up the highest mountains. You are a good man Jonathan and you have the power to brighten the darkest days. Peace and Love.

Comments:Hi

Just discovered your brilliant website - as you can gather I'm a long time fan of Jonathan Kelly. Must admit it happened by accident. As a poor student in Liverpool in the early 70s, me and some colleagues discovered that the beer at the 2 +1 Folk Club held at what was then the Centre Hotel sold exceedingly cheap beer!

It was £1 to get in and the beer was about the same price. We saw Jonathan several times there - the biggest shock was when he did a Dylan and went electric for 'Outside' He also started doing Mercy Mercy Me, an old Marvin Gaye song. We also saw Harvey Andrews & Graham Cooper, The Oldham Tinkers, Decameron and....Jasper Carrott with his guitar at the same venue .

We all said to each other we didn't like the music but imagine the smiles when we discovered that all 4 of us had all gone out to buy Twice Around the Houses - Still got my original vinyl!

Regards

Sligo Fayre, Madeleine and Cursed Anna are still my favorites and my teenage daughter is also a huge fan, every time we have one of her friends in the car they have to hear Anna.

We cant make the gig on 14th May as she will be in the midst of her GCSE's but if you are doing another gig in June we will travel up from North London to be there, so please keep the site up to date so that I can book tickets.

Can someone please let me know if JK is playing in or around Doncaster in the near or distant future?

Like so many on here I saw him 30 odd years ago in Hull, on 2 seperate occasions and still listen to him on my old vinyls.

Embarrassingly, I'm liable to recite the 'poem' of Ballad of cursed Anna, Richard Burton style, when egged on and sozzled but cannot sing for toffee, unlike JK who is brilliant.

Just a quick message to wish you all the best with the search for original video material, surely someone must have recorded and kept the OGWT session? (Although if the BBC didn't even keep it....well, who knows)! I bought 'Twice Around the Houses' the next day!

I was stunned to see Jonathan played at Leicester College in November of '72, that was my first few months there and have absolutely no recollection of him being there. Is it definite that he actually played that gig?

I didn't manage to get ant further with trying to fix up a gig in Dubai (remember)? I'm now back in Melbourne, but would love to time my visit to England next year when Jonathan is playing. The 'Rock' was also a pub I frequented for a while whilst I was going out with one of the students from the PE college and was teaching at Kimberworth.

Just tell him that I'm really glad to see him back in action and so obviously enjoying singing and playing. I still have a couple of his albums in my collection and remain puzzled as to how with such talent he never became more famously known. He's written some tremendous songs and comes across as a very genuine and gentle soul. Please wish him well from me.

The old songs sounded timeless, and the quality of his new writing beggars belief at the thirty year gap from the main stage.
JK has to be one of the greatest singer-sonwriters of his genre, and such a nice guy, warm, funny, and with a healthy dose of zaniness!
Hope it's not too long before JK's back on the stage, and there is definitely at least one more album in him yet.

Comments:Hello everyone,

It occurred to me that Jonathan sold hundreds of thousands of albums and yet I only have around 250 people on the mailing list so I am sure there must be many more fans out there who are not yet aware of the website or that Jonathan is performing again, so I have had an idea.

I have designed a new A4 poster based upon the artwork for the new Bootleg Series CD release and thought I would make it available to anyone who wanted a copy and I wondered if you might be willing to help publicise the site?

What I would like you to do is to request a copy from me then print it off on decent quality ink jet paper and request places such as their favourite pub etc put the poster up on the wall, of course it would also make an attractive item for you to frame up and put on your own wall, so if you would like to help or if you would just like a copy for yourself then I would be grateful if you could drop me a line and I will email the poster to you as a PDF file. This way the best quality reproduction possible will be maintained. I can also send it as a Jpeg file if you prefer but please be aware that it will be a large file so you will need a broadband connection.

If you would like to help then please send me an email stating whether you wish the file as a PDF or Jpeg (PDF is the best quality) I would be grateful for all the help you can give me to help raise Jonathan's profile.

All the best
Love & Peace
Gerald

MY COPY ARRIVED HERE IN THE NETHERLANDS BY POST LAST WEEK, AND FOR ME, IT REALLY CAPTURES THE SAME KIND OF ENERGY I HEARD WHEN I FIRST SAW JONATHAN PERFORM 'LIVE' ON TV IN THE EARLY SEVENTIES. IF YOU LIKE JONATHAN'S CDS, THEN YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THESE BRILLIANT LIVE VERSIONS ON THIS NEW RELEASE.

Comments: I suppose what makes us write is some news and thankfully the news is all very good at the moment. I searched for what seemed like a life-time to re-discover the most gifted singer-songwriter in the history of popular music, only to find that he may not play again. What a delight it is then to see that he will do the odd gig and how I so desperately hope I can make it to see him one more time.

It is like an addiction I suppose but I cannot get enough of the man. How lucky we are to re-visit our musical past with a talent that still has a musical future. Gerald and Jonathan only you really know how it feels.

Firstly I'm pleased that Jim has found the site and I hope he enjoys it. Secondly in reply to David Rankin, The JK archive is mainly safe as I had backed up most of it, though some items are lost. The hard drive is still broken, I am very grateful for all the offers of help I have had, but sadly without the cash to pay for it to be opened and repaired in a clean room it will have to remain on the shelf, I hope to get it repaired when I have sufficient funds. As for the New JK BOOTLEG releases, this has been held up because the PRS have dragged their feet, I will be phoning them on Tuesday to try to get clearance, hopefully it should be available for purchase within the next week.
There are quite a few things happing and I hope to update everyone via the site shortly. On behalf of Jonathan and myself I wish to express our gratitude for your continued support.

It's great his albums have been re-released on CD as my old vinyl copies are completely worn-through! No matter where I have travelled in the world since I always seem to have come across someone who remembers Jonathan. Great website, I am kicking myself for not finding it sooner, not least as I would definitely have travelled from my home in France to the Doncaster gig had I known it was on! There was something very special and unique about a JK performance. Best wishes, it was always a pleasure I feel privileged to have shared.

As others have indicated it was a fabulous concert, his voice as good as ever and those songs just blew me away all over again. A plea to Gerald to maintain the website and perhaps in the not to distant future try and coax another concert out of Jonathon and use the website to let us all know about it. If there is a next time a bigger venue would be a good idea, at Biddulph with virtually no promotion except this website there must have been 150 fans packed into a room designed for far less people. Sign perhaps the word is getting round and his audiences are growing!

The only real consolation is to know that Jon performed wonderfully well by all accounts and that the efforts that Gerald Stables has made to persuade him back to where he belongs and that is on stage has not been entirely in vain.
I only hope JK has a change of heart otherwise I will be suicidal for the rest of my life I think.

They were saddened that after 'finding' him that they could have actually witnessed his last performance ?!!
This could be the case, and for all the reasons previously mentioned by Gerald we have to respect the decision.

Comments:Hello Everyone,
Well what a night it was last night, we were so pleased to see a packed house with not even standing room left, a big thank you to Eric who organised the concert and to John the sound engineer for providing some of the best sound I have heard at a gig, I should also like to thank, Mike Miller, Mike Hope and Mick for providing some great backing for Jonathan. It was so nice to meet up again with so many friends and admirers of Jonathan It would be unfair of me to name any particular persons but you know who you are. It was a mixed occasion for me, 18 months on from the charity concert I was at what was to be Jonathan's final concert and if it does in fact turn out to be his last time on stage then what a send off he was given and he would like me to thank you all for your support. Jonathan's decision to retire from performing is not just because he feels he wishes to concentrate on other things in his life, but also because he feels he no longer has the energy for performing, it is no secret to his friends that he has been unwell for some time and I know you all share with me when I say that we all hope and pray that his health is rapidly restored and if it does I feel sure we shall be able to temp him into the occasional gig. Once again thank you for all your support over the past 18 months not only of Jonathan but also of myself and Rosy, we feel Jonathan still has a great deal to contribute to the world of music and you know we'll do our best to help that come about. Keep in touch! Love & Peace to one and all. Gerald

This festival, organised by 'one' Jeremy Beadle, featured the Grateful Dead and Captain Beefheart among others. The outstanding performance for me though, was Jonathan Kelly.
Infact it was the first and only time I ever saw him live but it prompted me to buy all his albums, and even though I am no longer in possession of these, his songs still spring into my head thirty odd years down the line.

I would like to thank you for being in my record collection since I was 18 when I first say you on The Old Grey Whistle test which inspired me to buy your album Jonathan Kelly.

My wife was also suitably impressed and has been singing your songs on the local folk scene ever since. We remember with pride and affection when you performed at the Rockingham Arms in Wentworth and part through your session you commented on someone in the audience having perfect pitch..this was Linda my wife singing along with you...to her great suprise and pleasure you asked her to accompany you on stage to sing Madaleine.. we really enjoyed that...

We were told last month that you have recently re appeared at the Rockingham unfortunetly we found out too late.. could you please let us know where and when you might be visiting Yorkshire again so that we can book our tickets well in advance..

I feel indeed humbled in his presence and his music and his words personify everything I essentially believe in and perhaps this is the greatest connect of all. This bonding of mutual understanding is what brings us all toegether and long may this fantastic harbinger of peace and harmony stay within our hearts.

Without him we are just a pale shadow of our former selves.

Comments:So What! Cat Stevens records again after thirty years and so what, Dylans best album ever is Modern Times! The record buying public have been duped once agaín by overlooking the best of them all and you can thank BIG BROTHER fot that!

The record industry should hold their huge and very greedy heads in shame because they have missed the real gem that was hidden beneath the rock and roll and he was the man that gave us rhythm to our soul and brought feelings where none existed before. SHAME ON YOU, you money grabbing so and so's for not having the foresight to see talent for what it was! He was a cut above the rest. The personification of purity in poetry and music that transcended all that had gone before. Jonathan will remain the shining star amongst all those fleeting moments of brilliance that light up our sorrowful sky. No shooting star was he. His star shone brightly for eternally for all to see who had eyes or ears; or if they were fortuitious enough, perhaps both.

Comments: It would be an absolute tragedy if Jonathan performed for the last time in Stafforshire in November, not just because his live performances are second to none but also because I may just miss it!
I desperately hope he re-considers because we have waited ever so long for his return to the land of living that it would be a terrible waste of his extraordinary talents to let them stagnate again. Jon is on the up and up and we are all behind him. I have never felt so much joy as the last few months seeing and hearing him in conceert again. A new album is all we need now.

To this day it is still one of my favourite concerts. I purchased TATH shortly afterwards and still play it now. I have often searched the Internet for news of JK and this is the first time I have found his site, probably kept spelling his Christian name wrong. I am delighted that he is still performing but not for much longer from what I read, I would love to see him again and recapture the magic of that night in 1972 in Lincoln.

His new songs are some of the best he has ever written and any new album must include the delightful BEST OF TIMES, the stunning PEELS OF THUNDER the magnificent I'VE BEEN DOWN THAT ROAD BEFORE along with the beautiful HUMMINGBIRD and the melocholy but enchanting EILEEN without of course forgetting the very memorable MADELEINE RE-VISITED. Comments:Couldn't believe my eyes 18 months ago when I saw Twice Around the Houses doubled with Wait till they change the backdrop on CD in my local record store. Now for someone who has retained his record deck just to play this piece of vinyl (everything else of value I had re-bought on CD)it was a real find, so I bought 2 copies there and then. Recently spotted BGO records had reissued Waiting on you and Two days in winter so bought these too. What a fabulous collection of songs on these 4 albums.
Began to think that there must be some sort of JK revival going on as these old recordings are resurfacing so a quick google located me the JK website. What a revelation, can't believe he's gigging again, can't wait to see him again.
JK if you read this, you had better not pack it in again just when word is getting round. Your fanbase from the 70's must have multiplied many fold, do you not realise your almost cult staus. My own 4 children were not born when you were playing but every one of them can recite word perfect, Cursed Anna, Madeleine and more. Spotted you are coming to the Potteries in November, not far from me!
I am sure you have no comprehension of the joy and pleasure you have given so many people through your music, please carry on so a new generation can listen to you for real once again.
My own personal favourite has got to be Sligo Fair. The lyrics are so evocative of rural Ireland and lines like "way above the northern coast the seagulls circle high while to the west the sinking sun spells gold across the sky" are stunning, I can almost see every one of those Friesian cows wending their way back to the cow shed!

Needless to say I will mailing my old pals from the 70's the link to the website and the news of your return will soon be spreading. The clamour for more concerts will become deafening - surely you're fed up of cleaning carpets anyway?

I just wanted to say how nice it was to see so many friends at Middlewich and on behalf of Jonathan to thank you for the concern over his health. I spoke to him last night and I'm pleased to report that's he's feeling better and enjoying the football. I don't believe we have seen the last of Jonathan performing but I don't think he will be performing as much in future as he has this year and gigs may need to be nearer to home. What I do know is this, music is the passion that flows through Jonathan and you can bet that if he can stand up and there is an audience to listen then he'll be there and I will always do my best for him and all his admirers. Oh and don't forget to look at the new photos on the site from Dick Derwent on the archive 2 page

I too, like my sister Joan, her husband Dave the kids Mathew and Katie and of course my good wife Rung, feel that this has been a very special year. It has fulfilled a dream that did not seem possible a few years ago and the magic will live in our hearts forever.

I hope and pray that this is not the end and that Jon gets well soon. Perhaps I am greedy. Or perhaps just hungry for more from someone who in my view is the best singer-songwriter around but one thing I do know and that is that without JK to look forward to what else have we got? There is no one and I mean NO ONE who could have captured the imagination of an audience in the way JK did on Friday night and I was both humbled and honoured by the experience.

Another memorable evening in the company of the great JONATHAN KELLY.
Although struggling with a bad throat infection , he ploughed through and like always gave 100%..
I feel very honoured to have witnessed the concerts in recent months , and to have been a small part of them , as one of the Bandits singing Godus with JK... its been such fun.
I dont know , but I have a feeling the Gigs are taking there toll on JK ?.. and perhaps at Middlewich last night we saw one of his last performances ?.. I hope I am wrong , but I for one would respect his (and Lexie's) decision if it was.
The last year or so has been fantastic and an unexpected bonus to see him perform live again. I am grateful and feel privileged to have shared the experience, and I know that goes for my friends, Mike Hope, Mick, Les and Ron.
Jonathan.. remember this....
You are truely our friend and we love you.

If a full recording studio record is too much (money, effort, time etc. - how about just a recording of a live gig like the memorable session down in Deal. We don't need fancy recording techniques; the charm and spirit comes through in the songs. So an "Evening with Friends" CD would be fine; if it was recorded in Deal I would pay a high ticket price to contribute towards the recording costs.
Any other takers?
Elsewise, how about a podcast?

Comments:Dear Jon,

After thirty years of nothingness you came back in our life,
We had hoped and prayed this day would come,
Through all our days of toil and strife.

We never quite believed it, when you came back on the scene,
It seemed so surreal it made us all feel,
That it must just be a dream?

But without the dream reality is never truly born,
And the songs you sang for us again,
Was the start of a new dawn.

Like a shooting star you passed us by
And we could only stand and stare,
In amazement that now once again you were here
And not elsewhere.

Dear Jon, do not forget us because we will never forget you,
You have given us such happiness,
In all you say and do.

Your words have been the tapestry
On which our soul is sewn,
Those word paintings that have made a thread
That you'll find on our gravestone.

I beg of you to stay with us,
We need you like a friend,
You have given us a conscience,
A beginning not an end.

We all were like lonely pilgrims,
Until you came back from the dead,
And your new words tell us stories,
About things no one has said.

Dear Jon I have to go now but I trust it's only me,
And we hope and pray you don't go away,
Because we love you don't you see.

Having waited something like thirty years for his musical re-incarnation I am now trying to catch up on those missing years and like a good wine that matures with time, Jonathan Kelly simply gets better and better!

I feel proud and indeed privileged to be a witness to this new chapter in the life of one of the best singer-songwriters in the history of popular music. We should all thank our lucky stars for every single moment of his time because time, as we know, has a way of slipping through our hands and we must grasp these moments before they slip away from us.

Middelwitch in June is something we shall all saviour and I am already counting down the days...and hours... and if I am truly honest even the minutes!

My new wife Tricia took me along to see you at the Bein Inn recently and we had a marvelous night. She was slightly worried that I may not like the gig not having heard any of your songs or of you for that matter! I only knew of you through Tricia. She had nothing to worry about. As a newcomer to your songs I thoroughly enjoyed them.But to the members of the audience who new your material Tricia included their affect was evident in the sing along atmosphere sometimes created throughout the evening. The relaxed delivery and manner you have on stage enhanced the evening. No one left disappointed in fact we are now craving more what's next for Jonathan Kelly Carpet Cleaner indeed??

Comments:Regarding Jim and his "Once around The Block" surely he is in fact referring to Twice Around The houses, as there is no other song remotely similar to this as far as I am aware.

What we do not know about Jim is how much he knows about JK and whether Mr. Kelly is all but a long and distant memory? If this was the case, then it would be perfectly understandable to assume that he is visiting this website in search of a song that he vaguely recalls but remembers that the artists name was Jonathan Kelly.

Assuming of course that my observations are correct, then all he needs to do is get hold of a copy of Twice Around The Houses on cd and his prayers have been answered!

I'm afraid I can't help you, I have never heard of the album, two ideas come to mind, firstly it might have been that people jokingly referred to Twice around The Houses as Once around the Block, or it could be that it was possibly a JK bootleg, if it was I am unaware of it, because I don't know of any JK bootlegs, intriguing, if I hear anything I'll let you know.
