Some geneology lists link Dr. Jean Francois Fernel (1497-1558) to Charles De Valois (Charles VII, France) based on sources claiming a dead baby substitution for one of Charles VII sons. That baby then was named Jean Francois Fernel who was father to Francis Fernald (1533-1602). |

This physician was a man of considerable note and published many medical treatises. His son ,Francis Fernald,wa born in 1539 and became a surgeon of

He was quite involved in tracking our lineage due to my great aunt giving him a considerable amount of stocks and bonds to a variety of companies. He hired a lawyer to try and find value of them but all I remember is he said he couldn't prove lineage to someone. Dr. Charles Augustus Fernald wrote a book, UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGY AND OF THE ANCIENT FERNALD FAMILIES,copyright 1910. My local library has this book. I have used this book for certain information in combination with other books. One of which is the, ANDERSON'S ROYAL GENEALOGY, copyright 1732. Much of Dr. Fernald's information is backed up by this book. I have not used any of the Fernald family information, so I am not sure on accurate Dr. Fernald is in that area. One email goes into a name, Franciscus Junius and Francis Fernald. Franciscus and Francis are the same name in different languages, one appears to be Latin/Italian and the other English. In my 30 years of research, I decided to look at some of Dr. Fernald's sources, so far they check out. Dr. Fernald lists his sources in front of the book. All genealogists know that you can not rely on one source but one must get more sources for each piece of information. As for the Fernald family information, only the person researching the surname can make judgement of Dr. Fernald's book. I am looking at one point of information in the book that has me wondering he made an error in looking at the record he used. My advice, look at the book, check the source, make your judgement. | Comments: | I have no Fernalds in my family history. After reading some of the emails on this site, have given me the urge to write.
Dr. Charles Augustus Fernald wrote a book, UNIVERSAL INTERNATIONAL GENEALOGY AND OF THE ANCIENT FERNALD FAMILIES,copyright 1910. My local library has this book. I have used this book for certain information in combination with other books. One of which is the, ANDERSON'S ROYAL GENEALOGY, copyright 1732. Much of Dr. Fernald's information is backed up by this book. I have not used any of the Fernald family information, so I am not sure on accurate Dr. Fernald is in that area. One email goes into a name, Franciscus Junius and Francis Fernald. Franciscus and Francis are the same name in different languages, one appears to be Latin/Italian and the other English. In my 30 years of research, I decided to look at some of Dr. Fernald's sources, so far they check out. Dr. Fernald lists his sources in front of the book. All genealogists know that you can not rely on one source but one must get more sources for each piece of information. As for the Fernald family information, only the person researching the surname can make judgement of Dr. Fernald's book. I am looking at one point of information in the book that has me wondering he made an error in looking at the record he used. My advice, look at the book, check the source, make your judgement. With so many Fernald descendants, why has no one ever attempted to compile a proper genealogy of this family to replace the one by Charles A. Fernald?? That book is so suspect, and a perfect example of a genealogy book that SHOULDN'T be out there for all to read!! |

| Comments: | I do not know much beyond my father's parents, but my grandfather on that side was James Alfred or Alfred James Fernald; (I can't remember, I called him Grampa!) He went by Alfred; married Barbara Morse and lived in Whitefield NH. Children are Dennis, Ruth, and Judy.
