| Comments: | Hi,
I'm glad you're doing this and that the Vulgar Boatmen are planning more CDs. After Please Panic came out and the great reviews, I heard nothing for several years. When Wide Awake came out I was surprised that they we're still a band and eager to hear more great music. Do you know if the Boatmen ever plan to tour in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area. It would be very cool to see and hear them in person. Thanks, Doug |

| Comments: | I was a late comer to the Vulgar Boatmen having first seen them on a UK tv progaramme called Later hosted by Jools Holland in 1995ish. After the release of Opposite Sex in Europe. They were fab and I downloaded several songs of Napster, obviously after realising just how good they are I snapped up all the commercial output I could (not much in UK) and have been interested in the band ever since |

I saw that some people were wondering about bootlegs, and I know an individual who is the master of all Boatment bootlegs from this time period. I hesitate to mention his name in an open forum without his permission. Shoot my an e-mail and I will pass it on. |

Im trying to work out the words to You and Your Sister's "Fallen Down" and failing miserably. That unmistakable boatmen drawl has proven difficult to decipher. My band wants to start playing it and I dont wanna disappoint. Any1 who knows good links or who might be able to assist will get a big blow kiss all the way from Kuala Lumpur.

I first saw the bad at Guru Java at Purdue University in 1993 or 1994, my freshman year. They were great. I remember reading the VB review in Rolling Stone and the Illinois Entertainer when Please Panic came out.
I went the the show at Schubas Jan 2001, taped it. Great show, I had a bunch of photos posted into the other Vulgar Boatmen Yahoo group "drivesomewhere" |

| Comments: | Picked up Mary Jane's #1 Record in my local CD Shops cutout bin and was blown away by how great it sounded. With a little investigation, I discovered they were circling in the same orbit as Vulgar Boatmen (my favorite currrent artist, The Silos Walter Salas Humara was affiliated with V.B.), Frog Holler, D.C.'s own under-the-radar Last Train Home, etc. I found you can get signed copies of Mary Janes two CDs direct from their website. The Vulgar Boatmen and the Mysteries of life are playing a show together on Oct. 12 at Second Story in Bloomington. This is in conjunction with a new record label Dale, Jake, and Freda are forming called No Nostalgia. First items of business include a Vulgar Boatmen compilation CD and the Mysteries of Life new third LP. I'd advise people to catch the Boatmen live if you can. If you are reading this you probably know that to truly see the Boatmen is to see them live. |

Same for Son Volt - since Jay Farrar IS Son Volt, things are just fine. He's got a new disc recorded- I just wish he wasn't such a flake and would release it. I never heard of the Scud Mtn Boys- I will check them out. But they too appear to have "demised" with no releases since '96? |

Hang tight, and locals should keep your eyes open for a potential Mysteries/Boatmen showcase to kick off the new label. Like I said, I hope this info isn't premature. But there is reason to be hopeful. I'm gonna feel like a real dumbass if someone already posted this information here... |

| Comments: | Does anyone know if the song that goes "breaking in my
heart," or something like that, is an original Boatmen tune, or a cover? It's phenomenal. If you haven't heard it, you can get it at http://icdweb.cc.purdue.edu/~heltonbr/mp3/ Some guy recorded a recent show at Schuba's in Chicago and put some stuff on his web site. Some other songs are "Drive Somewhere," "Mary Jane," "Cry Real Tears." The rest are songs I've only heard them play live. Unfortunately, he hasn't put up "Allison Says," which is fabulous live. |

| Comments: | The current line up consists of Dale Lawrence, Matt Speake
(guitar), Jake Smith (bass), Andy Richards (drums), Kathy Kolata (viola), and Sophia Travis (accordian, keys). Of course this changes every once in a while. If you want to see them, you have to come to the midwest. This site is the best place to learn of new dates. There have been a few new songs lately that I've heard. "It's True" and "I just bet" are two that were written co-written by Dale and Jake. You can hear those songs on the new MYSTERIES OF LIFE (Jake's band) CD. That will be out probably in July. I highly recommend snatching up ANY MOL CDs you can get your hands on out there. Dale and other Vulgar Boatmen have played on all three of the other MOL CDs. Jake and Dale have formed a their own record label as well. It's called NO NOSTALGIA and will be releasing both VB and MOL CDs. It is still in the works, so no permenant dates have been set, I guess. Also, I've been told that the Vulgar Boatmen are finally back in the studio. Anything beyond that I don't know. I can help you with the bootlegs if you are still interested. Steve |

long time since "The Opposite Sex." I also second the request regarding any recorded live material. Any MP3's out there? The last time I saw the band was in 1989, on my last day in Gainesville, FL; obviously, the Robert Ray incarnation. Christ, I've had two kids since their last album! Anyone who knows anything, please email me. Thanks. John |

Praise the lord! This is the way rock music is supposed to be made. Eventhough, I was only 1 year old when this was made, this music takes me back a couple of years to when I was a teen. It's kinda like listening to Chuck Berry, the eternal teenager. Forget the being a civilized adult, this is were it's at! I encourage you all to buy this CD. Many of these songs creep into Vulgar Boatmen sets. Perhaps, they aren't revisited enough. If there is anyone out there who can put me in touch with more Gizmos (tapes, videos, anything). Mr. Pickles?...Dr. Cotswett?...anybody? |

My colleague Dr Bor Cotswett informs me that in fact the Vulgar Boatmen will be in Chicago at the HIDE OUT and NOT the Double Door, as they are by no means rich and/or famous enough to be allowed into the Double Door to use the phone, let alone get on stage. Or something like that. So, again: Boatmen, Chicago, Hide out, April 28th. And thank you, Dr Cotswett. |

| Comments: | THE GIZMOS: 1981 NYC DEMOS--THE MIDWEST CAN BE ALLRIGHT
Gulcher Records announces the debut of a new CD-EP series with the release of THE GIZMOS: 1981 NYC DEMOS--THE MIDWEST CAN BE ALLRIGHT, featuring seven songs recorded shortly before the final incarnation of the group disbanded. Only the title track, "The Midwest Can Be Allright," was previously released--on the long out-of- print 1981 Hoosier punk/new wave sampler, RED SNERTS--THE SOUND OF GULCHER. Now, 20 years after they were recorded, all seven of these sought-after songs have been digitally remastered for release on the original Gulcher label. Many consider these tracks the coming-of-age of songwriter/lead vocalist/guitarist Dale Lawrence, who went on to form the critically acclained Vulgar Boatmen, and has just had a new book about Indiana high school basketball, THE HOOSIER HYSTERIA ROADBOOK, published by Diamond Books. Guitarist Tim Carroll led the hyperbilly band Blue Chieftains to success, and now enjoys a solo career in Nashville, Tennessee, writing songs that have been covered by the likes of John Prine and Robbie Fulks. Billy Nightshade relocated to Boston as bass guitarist for Unattached, hooking up with his brother Mark Frazier on guitar, and Jamie Severens of the Jetsons on lead vocals. A recent Gizmos reunion in Bloomington, Indiana, had the dance floor rocking with 20-something kids singing along to these songs, learned from cassette tapes dubbed and re-dubbed over the past two decades. THE GIZMOS: 1981 NYC DEMOS--THE MIDWEST CAN BE ALLRIGHT will be available soon in your neighborhood record store, or e-mail Gulcher directly for mail order. Track Listing: "The Midwest Can Be Allright," "Hard Hoboken Line," "See About You," "Same Old Mountain Music," "Biscuits & Gravy," "My Baby Loves Crime," Please Panic." |
