If anyone happens to remember any stories of Fred Miller (son of Martha Cloud & Leonard Miller) or Amanda Lee Dingess (daughter of Phebia Roberts & Pete Harvey Dingess) or any of thier family...I would love to hear them. I was born at Beech Creek, Wv, but my family moved over in the holler from Glen Alum and Beech Creek next to my Uncle Elias NIchols home and my grandmother's Amy Nichols Blackburn. I am sure a lot of you remember my dad Smith and my Mom Susie Nichols Cisco. There were 8 of us girls and one brother Russell. I now live in Llano, Tx my husband and I went to the reunion last year in Gilbert Wv and had oneof the best times ever. I am sorry we cannot attend this year but who knows maybe someday we will be able to come back and see everyone. Take care of yourselves and may God Bless you all. Ina Cisco Davis |

| Comments: | It is so great to spend time with this wonderful group of people. It is such a honor to be able to guide you around Glen Alum again. Seems like we finish one reunion and i start counting down the days untill the next one. As of Jan. 25-07 App. Fuels sold the Glen Alum plant. Within 30 working days we will be back working, cleaning coal.Glen Alum has been a source of income for over 100 years. The next round of coal to come out of Glen Alum will be Met coal. This coal is used all around the world in making steel. With a little luck a few of us will be able to hang our hats up and say that Glen Alum was a great place to work. No matter the outcome i will always be at the top gate at Glen Alum to welcome you home one more time. Pete i was up all night looking at the photos and reaing. Everyone did a great job on putting this together. It is sad to look at the pictures and know that it's changed so much. Rev. Bobby, can't wait to shake your hand again. I will try to spend more time with everyone this year. Last year when i was saying good-bye,i had to dry my eyes. Guess you would be made of stone if you didn't. It is such a great honor to be apart of your group, with that said lets get ready to go once again.... |

All of my sisters and I lived in Glen Alum until 1936. My grandparents on my mothers side were Abraham Lincoln Bragg and Laura Susan Trent Bragg. I see several references to grandparents of others with the name of Lincoln and Vivian Bragg. Not sure where that fits in with my grandparents, but sure it must somehow. Absolutely love your site. Until reading this history I never knew the details. His name was John B Maynard and was the Chief of Police of Williamson until he was murdered in 1918 just two weeks before my father was born. If there is anyone out there who knows more about him I would be most interested in hearing from you.

| Comments: | I have very much enjoyed the site--was in Glen Alum yesterday with my two sons, and as you say, there is not much to connect with the old town that I visited as a boy in the late '50's. I am the grandson of Charlie and Annie Thomas who lived there for many years, leaving in early 1957. My Dad was Clinton Thomas, and his brother was Irvan, and they both worked in the mines there, Dad leaving in 1948 to attend Marshall College on the GI bill. I have a hard time remembering where things were in the old camp, trying to recall what Dad told me and showed me on his last visit there in the late '80's, before he died--where they lived, where the company store was, etc. So, your site is a lode of info, and I hope that if you all have another reunion, that I maybe could be a part of it--I'd love to look around the holler there with someone who could point out 'how it was'.
Sincerely, Randall Thomas, Pikeville, KY |

| Comments: | I am thrilled to find this site. I have a big interest in geneology, and have been investigating my family tree. My mom is Louise, who is the daughter of Dick & Minnie Miller. She lived in Glen Alum until about 1947. I have always loved hearing her stories. I would like to find the email address of Roger Adkins, who is my first cousin. I noticed he had a post earlier on this site. Looking forward to the reunion, and being able to take a tour of the old town. I have lots of memories of Glen Alum from my childhood, since we used to travel quite a bit from St. Louis to the beautiful mountains. My aunt Toots still lives on Ben Creek, and we do get back to visit from time to time. |

| Comments: | Judy,
I am so grateful that you have taken the time to develop and organize the Glen Alum site. I love reading the guestbook, as I remember several people that have signed. I don't know if many know this, but our family was the last to move out of the camp. I wouldn't take anything for our heritage. Our children or grandchildren will never have the "education" that we have. I would like to know where Margaret Monk lives, and also if Shirley Coleman's grandaughter would e-mail me to let me know more about where the rest of the Coleman family is living. ( I shall never forget Mac in the company store, and Jackie Coleman, my first, third, and fourth grade teacher. I didn't skip second grade. My aunt Jean Eleanor was the teacher for that year!) | Comments: | Didn't grow up in Glen Alum, but I do have alot of memories while staying with my Poppy and Grandma(Hayes and Nannie Bragg). Looking at some of the pictures and reading the stories brings tears to my eyes. Tears of enjoyment and a little sadness. At times I wish I could have those days back just for a little while. Playing in creek across the road, sitting in the front pew of chuch listening to Poppy deliver his Sunday morning sermon and listening to Uncle Jim. What wonderful memories. |

| Comments: | What a beautiful tribute to such a wonderful memory. It is such a shame that we have only memories and pictures of that time. Our recent visit (July 7,8,9 - 2004)was astounding. My first trip down since 1980 and there is nothing left but sad reminders of those fine summer days. The creek goes on, meandering through to the Tug River taking it's memories with it. But since this is a dream book, I would like to Dream MYSELF and my family back home there to Glen Alum, at my MawMaw & PawPaw Ferrell's house for ONE MORE DAY. I would like to swing on the front porch swing and fall asleep (in the big feather bed) to the gurgling sound of the creek, just outside the window. If only this was possible. But I would hazard to guess you all would want to do the same. Thank you - Judy Hatfield for making me think and dream. They weren't kidding - Almost Heaven, West Virginia. They just forgot to add the Glen Alum part !!

| Comments: | My grandparents (Samuel Harvey Taylor and Maryann Taylor born in January 1876) lived in Glen Alum in the early 1900's. My mother, Mary Rolee Taylor, the last of 9 children, and was born in Glen Alum in May of 1917. She had an older brother Dave Taylor, and much older sister Gwendolyn. I think my grandmother had another husband before my grandfather - I think his name was John Ford and he may have been a Baptist minister. My grandparents moved to Kenove and on to Cleveland, Ohio. I was born in 1940 in Gary, WV and am related to the Witten's and Cecils from Tazwell, VA. If anyone knew my mom, or remembers the Taylor's and Ford's - please feel free to email me. I live in Southern California now, but remember vividly the one trip we took to Glen Alum when I was a child. There is something hauntingly beautiful and wild about the mountains there - and I don't think other mountains compare in beauty to those in WV. Hope to hear from anyone that knows family history,or is related. Thanks,Linda |
