Comments:My ancestry is traceable to Marion Agnes Land Rookes (look her up).

Both myself and my life partner (who recently reconciled with his pastor) decided to align with the Church to form "A Peace Of History."

We educate about the post-Slave era, the importance of Abraham Lincoln, etc.

We are looking for period clothes. Our seamstress went against our wishes and used modern sewing equipment. Not only that, but my partner's daughter's dress has a red stain in a place I won't mention.

We are also accepting period clothes (unsoiled) from the 1858-59 era.

Comments:WE had attented a meeting of the SAR at at Tryon Genealogical Building, in Forrest City. My girlfriend makes period clothing, and had made an outfit for one of the members there. She, was invited to attend and discuss differences between "period clothing" and costumes. The amount of information that I saw in thier library, impressed me, and stirred my intrest into my own background, Hence, here I am Looking to trace back our bloodlines.
I already have a link from a cousin, that put one of my grandmothers, great-grand-fathers in Lincoln Co., around 1807. Thanks, and I hope to be using and/or communicating with your group.

Comments:My son is working on supplemental applications for some of his father's ancestors in Gaston-Lincoln Counties,NC.

Here are our problems: We had used "Our Kin" as sources but there are no dates in it for the Births, Deaths and Marriages of the following:

Marriage of Caleb Lafayette Hoffman and Mary Lovina Costner (we have the death certificates)

All of the above for:
Michael Henry Costner and Lavina Rudisill
Frederick Hoffman and Lavina Lineberger

We have purchased the Record copies of the following and they do not prove the lineage thrugh the children that bring us to Caleb Lafayette and Mary Lovina Costner. Should anyone there who is a member od either DAR or SAR connect to them we would appreciate their help. He has several other supplements to complete that connect to these ancestors and he is anxious to complete them.

Comments:To Whom It May Concern,
I am Barry H. Beattie of San Marcos, San Diego County, CA and I was a cousin and good friend of Catherine Lucille Beattie Helms a twin. We spent many years working on genealogy for our Beattie Family Lineage together.
The last time I heard anything about her was from one of her daughters that used Catherine's e-mail address to contact me. She informed me that Catherine has had a stroke and is currently in a coma in the hospital.
Just recently, Warren Jeffery "Jeff" Johnston, another Cousin of Gaston Co., Gastonia found me on the internet and he indicated that both Catherine and her husband, Arnold, of Charlotte, NC are deceased.
I would dearly like to get in contact with some one that can get me in contact with her family because I know that with all her love, effort and research, she never completed a family genealogy journal.
I have been doing research along with Catherine for about 20 years and I have put together two journals for my Beattie and Stroup Family Lineage. I am hoping to contact a relative of Catherine's to determined if they are interested in getting a CD of these two journals.
Thanks for your time and any effort in advance, Barry (age 80) 760-798-2162, 500 Rancheros Dr., Space 85; San Marcos, CA 92069-2929 or by E-mail: sqrbear@cox.net

Comments:I'm glad to have discovered your most interesting website. I enjoyed reading the comments and inquiries of so many searchers for geneology information about ancestors from the Lincoln-Gaston Counties area. I have been acquiring information about my mother's people, both maternal and paternal sides...and it only leads me to yearn for more. I am the daughter of Kate Cameron Hines Johnson. Mother's parents were William Walter Hines (often referred to as "W.W.") and Elizabeth (Lizzie)Cown (Cowan) Arney. On the Hines side I am descended from the Summerow, as well as Rudisill families. My grandmother, Lizzie Arney, was descended from Christian Arney, Sr., who served in the Revolutionary War, and who lived in Gaston, later Lincoln County. Her mother was Mary Chunn, descended from Chunns of Rowan County, as well as Cowans and Hydes. Of course, I am very interested in information about any of these families. Mother died in April, 2008 at the age of 97, only shy of 98 by a month (May 19, 1910 was her birthdate).
I'll be sending in my application for membership in the Gaston Lincoln Genealogical Society tomorrow!
PS My dad was Edgar Lee Johnson of Granite Falls, NC, so Caldwell, Alexander, and Catawba Counties are territories I'm researching, too!

Comments:Growing up in Gaston County, I had no idea of the history there. Now, that I'm beginning to discover it I'm enjoying seeing so many of those familiar names (from elementary-high school) go back in time. Turns out that most of my family was from points west (Cleveland, Rutherford, Henderson). The one exception is the Crouses from Gaston/Lincoln. My gr grandmother Fanny Etta Crouse died young so I'm having trouble getting very far in that line. Think I'll be treating myself to membership for Christmas. Keep up the good work.

He was married to Hannah Seitze, daughter of Jacob Seitze and Mary Clubb. About 1814 they moved with their several children and a number of other Lincoln County residents to the Missouri Territory.
Mary and an infant son died shortly after the move and R.D. Cowan remained a widower until his & Mary's children were
grown. Dickey, as he was known, then married my 2nd great grandmother, Susanna Landers, the Widow Waller. Please contact me if you have any information about R.D. Cowan.

Comments:Thank you for visiting our website and the wonderful comments that make my work worthwhile.

There are a couple of questions I've been working on for years and I thought I'd throw one of them out, maybe some of you will know the answer:

James Proctor married Margaret Neely "Peggy" Whitworth.

In 1850, James and Margaret were enumerated in Cleveland County, NC. James was a farmer and they lived only two houses away from his mother.

By 1860 James and Peggy had added three children to their family and were living in the Craigeville Post Office area of Gaston County, NC. They lived next door to Peggy's brother William and his family. Members of her grandmother's Craft family also lived nearby.

From North Carolina Troops, A Roster, by Weymouth C Jordan states (Company G, 34th Regiment of NC Troops): James A Proctor, Private, was born in Rutherford County and resided in Lincoln County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Lincoln County at age 33, on or about 30 September 1861. He was captured at Falling Waters, Maryland, 14 July 1863 and confined at Old Capitol Prison, Washington, DC, then transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland on 8 August 1863. He was transferred to Elmira, New York 16 August 1864, and paroled at Elmira on 9 February 1865, at which time he was transferred to Boulware's Wharf, James River, Virginia, where he was received on or about 21 February 1865 for exchange.

He is also represented in the same set of books as having enlisted in Lincoln County in Company E, 34th Regiment, on 11 September 1861, and having discharged 15 July 1862 by reason of asthma and dyspepsia.

James' death was apparently under suspicious circumstances. On her pension application in 1901, Peggy states James was "killed" in 1872. However, the in the Lincoln County Coroner's Inquest files located at the Archives in Raleigh, NC, (CR 060.928.1) I found a receipt which states "Lincoln County, To David Boyles, Esq, For attending on the jury Held over the Body of James Proctor Decd His services five dollars $5.00, April 26 1869". Was James Proctor who died in 1869 the same James A Proctor who was married to Peggy?

I believe they were one and the same. Our James was not with his family when the 1870 Federal Cenus was enumerated Margaret and her children were living in the North Brook post office section of the Laurel Hill township of Lincoln County, NC.

I have heard thru the genealogy grapevine that James may have been killed somewhere near the Kadesh Church (edge of Cleveland and Lincoln County) by a "Washburn fellow". Does anyone know if if this is true? Can anyone point me toward resources to prove or disprove as I have yet to find anything past the coroner's report.

Thanks,
Judy

Comments:You have an amazing web site. Hopefully through this site I can learn a little more about my early ancestors and help me clear up a few questions I have about them.
Mt GreatGGG Grandfather was John Glen (1726-1828) of Lincoln County NC, (Born near Londonderry Ireland), who was married to Elizabeth Spratt, second to Jane McLean, and then third to Mary Grissom. I descended from the marriage of John and Jane through their son David who was born in NC in 1780. David married Elizabeth Grissom which I would assume was related to his Step-Mom Mary Grissom.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone who could maybe fill me in a little on the North Carolina Glenn’s of this line. I do know that many of John Glen's children move from NC to Tennessee and other points west sometime prior to 1850. Others I am told remained in North and South Carolina. I have very little information on David Glenn other than he moved to Tennesee and died their around 1860. Why did he move to Tennessee?. Then again his Step-Mom may also be his Mother In-Law. I may have answered my own question. I wish I knew more bout him.
I’m also a big Civil War buff and am very interested in learning about distant cousins who fought in that war and with who. I was so far able to confirm 2 who were in the famed “Bethel Regiment” , the 11th NC Infantry.

If you have any information you can share or have web links that may help me, send to:

Jonas Brown is my ggggrandfather and is 23 years old in 1860 living in the household with his father John Brown and his mother Catherine Brown, along with many other family members andhis one year old son, Jonas. Then I find he joined the 16th regiment from Gaston County. He later is said to have deserted in 1865. Can you please help me find out where there farm was, If he came back to Gaston Co. after the war, if he was hung, inprisoned, defected to the North, or just whatever happened to him. In 1880 the census shows that his father John Brown is now 80 years old and living in Shelby, N.C. His son, Jonas is now 21. Help

Comments:I am a 2nd great grandson of Jacob Cope ans Sarah Anne Oldham (Odam), who resided in the northen part of the old Lincoln County, now Catawba County, on the McLin Creek. Her father. George S Oldham (Odam), who resided on and died on his farm. He was a Revolutionary War Veteran, who was at the battle of Cow Pens, and at Yorktown. is buried in an unmarked grave in that area. The only listings that I have of him is when he bought the farm from a Peter Grunt Sr. on Nov 16,1799. DB 19:378 And The 1800 and 1810 Lincoln CO census. The 1820 census shows his son George Jr, with his mother residing with him. George Jr was married to a Miss Jane Howard, on March 19, 1831. That was the last time that anything was recorded about the Cope or Odam families in the Lincoln Co area. Any information that you could provide about these families, would be greatly appreciated.
Bye for now. Gene Cope

Comments:I am searching for information on from 1832 and PRIOR to. My information comes from "Our Kin". On page 63, in John Hufman's will, property located on the south side of the south fork of the Catawba River including the mill and improvements called the Jonas Hufman mill, and the JOHN HAMILTON place or where Jno. Hamilton lives including where Polly Hovis lives, in short all his land on said fork was to be divided between John Hufman and the six sons of Jonas Hofman, viz: ELI, Michael, Jacob, Jonas, Miles and John.

On pg.69, ELI, b.Feb.e, 1814 married MARTHA HAMILTON, daughter of JOHN HAMILTON. On. pg 55, LEWIS HAMILTON was married to Mary A. Falls.

Can anyone tell me if Martha and Lewis were both children of this John Hamilton, and did John have other children as well. Also, any information regarding JOHN HAMILTON would be most appreciated. I know that Larkin Hamilton was my gg-gf, but I have been unable to locate his parents. Larkin was born in 1826-28.

Thanks for any help.

Comments: Did the WPA ever survey this cemetery? Has a survey of this cemetery ever been done?
It is my understanding that my ancestor Rev. James HILL and his wife Precious STOKES is buried in this cemetery. But low and behold it is fenced in and under lock and key so a person go looking for grave sites.
I have it that Rev. HILL was born in 1771 in Mecklenburg County, NC. He was the son of James HILL, Sr. and Jean UNKNOWN. Rev. James HILL died March 20, 1828 in Lincoln County, NC. I have no dates for the wife Precious STOKES.
Am seeking your help! Thank YOU. Ray
