After reading Conception, I felt the need to write and comment on what a wonderful writer you are. It has been a long time since I've read a book that was so captivating. I love how you blended the stories of the unborn child and Shivana's story. My 16 year old daughter and I just finished reading Upstate. I was only able to find one copy in our library system, so we took turns reading it and had an interesting conversation comparing our opinions. I look forward to more of your work to come. I know I'm late, but I just finished reading your book "Upstate" and just had to contact you to let you that you have reached an older audience as well. I have reccommended the book to my family (my son is reading it now) and friends and have posted a review on Amazon.com as well. Much love and peace to you! Here is the Amazon.com review that I wrote: "Upstate" is one of the best books I have read in YEARS! The language was so real and creative, I could FEEL the words and the feelings of the characters! I am a 46-year-old wife and mother and this book took me back to my young adulthood and then "grew me up" all over again. I handed it down to my 16-year-old son to read, because it is not only REAL when reading it, but it also teaches you lessons without you even realizing it. I cried HARD at the end...but it was a good cry. Kalisha Buckanon...you are truly talented and I wish you the best! I'm waiting on the movie now, although I don't know HOW it will outshine the book. | Comments: | Hi Kalisha, I teach the most at risk students at a school in the South Bronx. One of my students chose your book as a personal reading book a few weeks back. She loved it so that I became really curious about it. I downloaded your book from Itunes and am sharing it with my new class. They love it and look forward to listening to it daily. You can literally hear a pin drop when it is on. They respond to it in their journals and discuss it with each other and are so engaged. I'm actually worrying about what I can follow it up with as it is going to be a very tough act to follow. I want to thank you for writing real characters who touch our hearts and inspire my students. I think that Catcher in the Rye will be so much better received because it is endorsed by Antonio. I think that is what we will read next while it all is still fresh in their minds. I almost feel like that chick from Misery. I just want you to write another book and make it where they get together and live happy ever after. Out of the ten books I purchased I decided to read yours first. I sat up half the night and put the kids to bed early just to read it. The spirit of the unborn was so real and the stories that were told from it's unborn life reminded me of one of my other favorites BELOVED.When you told Shivana story about life as a young uneducated but wanting finally something more it broke my heart because I saw myself at fifteen.
