Comments:Dear Carol

Vic Fields, Site Director for Parke County Learning Center in Rockville, IN and I are attempting to organize a one day workshop on Basic Gravestone Restoration techniques.

Jessica Felix of Roachdale, Indiana, has agreed to lead the workshop. Our plan is to hold this session on Saturday, June 7, 2008. The workshop will consist of a short classroom presentation at the PCLC and some actual field work on gravestones in the Hixon Cemetery in Wabash Township in Parke County.

Jessica has asked that we get written permission before we go onto the cemetery site for the workshop. I’m currently trying to determine who should be contacted to obtain this permission. Since you have done so much work with the Cemeteries in Parke County, I thought maybe you might be able to give me some direction.

I have attempted to contact the township trustee, but thus far she has not returned my calls. I know there is a cemetery commission in Parke County. Does the commission have any formal/legal jurisdiction over county cemeteries? What about the County Commissioners? Should I involve them? Are there other avenues I should pursue?

Interestingly the ground for the Hixon cemetery was actually donated by my great, great grandfather so I have a direct connection to the site. However, it was my understanding that one of my distant cousins in Texas, who apparently held the deed to the property, was attempting to give the cemetery to Parke County. The last I heard there were legal issues around this property transfer. Again, the township trustee was supposedly involved in some way in this process but so far I have received no update from her.

I’d appreciate your advice on how I should proceed on this matter.

Sincerely,

Mike Lewman

I noticed one Fisher gravesite with a Clore in it. I wonder if there's relationship there since my father's side is Fisher, his mother's Cloer, and her sister married a MCClure. :)

Comments:My family is from Wells County so I've not been able to find any ancestor's in Carol's pages. However, I'm hopeful someone might be looking here and recognize some of my family names. I'm looking for Arnold's, Wiecking's Harper"s and Foster's. The Wiecking family was one of the original families in Bluffton, Indiana. By marriage the Wiecking's are related to Sarah Arnold's family, Peggy Harper's family, and relatives of Steve and Jim Foster. I've spent year's working on our geneology and have the Wiecking's back to about 1500 in Germany. The various seedlings from the family names mentioned above have been much more challenging.

If you drive down the main street in Bluffton and look-up at one of the old brick buildings across from the County Courthouse you will see a Tiffany stained glass window with the name Wiecking embedded in it. It was made by Louis Comfort Tiffany and the building where it is installed was originally built to house the Wiecking Cigar Company.

Carol, this truly is a very neat idea. Thank you for creating a site where people can leave messages and dreams about finding family members. It's truly very special.

Comments:CELIA DOOLEY McINTOSH - MARRIED TO JOHN WESLEY McINTOSH.
They lived in Parke county - Greene township.

I would be interested in information anyone has on the following:

Celia Dooley Mcintosh - born 1841 - died 1874
John Wesley McIntosh - born January 12, 1837 - died 1919

Their children
William L. McIntosh - born in 1858
Samuel - born in 1859
James B. - born 1863 (probably March 1st)

James B. was my grandfather. His mother Celia died in 1874. I located the family on the 1860 census before James was born. After Celia died, James said he lived with his grandparents. I don't know if he lived with Dooley's (Celia's family) or the McIntosh's. I know that his dad John Wesley was born in Kentucky but do not know where or have a full name.

I would greatly appreciate any information I can find.

Carol, There are no words to tell you how much we appreciate that you have helped us find our great grandmother. Her grave is located in a little known graveyard that is on private property and almost overgrown. If you had not located it and taken the time to walk among the gravestones, we would never have known where Celia was buried. Thank you so much for caring.

Fisher, near their parents Nathan and Martha Strickler...I dream that some descendant of theirs is perhaps looking for me, the granddaughter of William Alexander Strickler...perhaps Bobby or Dick King is out there looking, or maybe Paul Fisher's children are seeking their distant cousins...the children of Aunt Margaret who lived in California, or perhaps any children of Howard Srickler who also lived in California. I have seen your photos as children, and I have them, from your Wisconsin trip to visit the Fishers...if you are looking for your lost cousin, look no further.

What a wonderful gift to be able to use such a site. You are one of Parke County's finest assets, Carol! Other counties' databases online in our state cannot compare to Parke, and you are part of the reason why.

Comments:Thanks to you and your friends for all the hours of work and tramping through cemeteries. I have been at genealogy long enough to know that exploring cemeteries is not all fun. Since I live in Florida, I am grateful for all the information I have obtained from your site.

Comments:In the fall of 2003, I discovered where my grandmother was buried - Major Lewis cemetery. She died when my dad was 10 months old. I visited last September and discovered the three infant graves by hers. Nellie Catherine Holbert McPheeters, wife of Frank. She is the daughter of Ralph and Mary Ellen Lewis Holbert. Thank you so very much for the transcription of the graves. I forgot to search for some of the other names. But I'm curious -- Why or where is William Lewis' grave. From the information I had, the cemetery is named for him.

Comments:Thank you for putting the Parke County Cemeteries on-line. I had no hope of finding the correct cemetery as the person's handwriting and spelling was atrocious. The only thing really legible was Mount and the rest looked like merever. I just started clicking on the townships and checking for cemeteries with the word Mount in the name. My person (I knew date of death and burial date) was right there in Old Mt Moriah Cemetery. Now I know where he's buried and what his birthdate is.

Comments:The biggest majority of my ancestors originated in SC, William Presley Daniel b.1791 m Nancy Reynolds, had children, moved to KY had more children moved to Parke Co IN, settled in Florida twp. The kids got married but all remained in the same area and on the 1880 census are all listed in the same neighborhood. My genealogy goes like this: GGGgrandfather William Presley Daniel b 1791 Laurens Co SC, GGgrandfather Presley Anderson Daniel b 1815 Mercer Co KY, Ggrandfather William Berry Daniel b 1838 Parke Co, IN and my grandfather b 1868 IN. My mother was born in Iowa. This is a great site as it allows me to search all the cemeteries in the area and look for peripheral relatives. A BIG thank you to Jim Wilcox for introducing me to it. Comments:I am searching for Robert McCarty who is my husband Bill McCarty's grandfather. Bill never met his grandfather. He was dead before Bill was born. We have been told that he buried somewhere in the Sherman-Denison area. Bill was raised by his mother and stepfather and both of them are gone also. If you have a Robert McCarty on your cemetary list we would like to know. He was married to Julia Racheal Mitchell. Thanks, Annie McCarty
PS..We were told that he died in the 1920's. He evidently shot and killed some people or person at the horse racing track in the Arlington area in the mid 1920's. That is not much but it is all we have.

Comments:I am very interested in finding any information on the "Montgomery" family name. All from Rosedale/Fontanet area. (parke/vigo co. In.) I have found a few cemetery's in and around Rosedale/Fontanet area. There are two i am very interested in finding out how to get a plat map, to find out the locations of some of my ancestors resting place. I cannot seem to find any records of these cemetery's.
The two are located in the far northeastrn part of Fontanet area. The names of these are "Adkins Cemetery" and "Carithers Cemetary". (actually located in northern vigo co.) I have reason to beleive I have several family members located in these cemetery's. I have been to Adkins Cemetery, and it was a very upsetting experience. The weeds were taller than I and I was told that the previous landkeeper had gotten tired of mowing around the stones, so he pushed most of them in a hole and buried them. This is very sad and heart breaking. I was only able to find about 8 stones, some of which where broken and unreadable. If there is anyone that could possible help, and/or give me some information, please feel free to send me an e-mail. eyesofanangel@joink.com
