THEY DIED YOUNG LEAVING THREE SONS, ONE OF WHICH IS MY GRANDFATHER, GILBERT WOODS. ACCORDING TO SEVERAL OBITUARIES BOTH ALBERT AND HATTIE DIED THE SAME DAY OF PNEUMONIA AND WERE BURIED TOGETHER IN THE ROWE CEMETARY JUST OUTSIDE OF NYEVILLE. THE ONLY PERSON WHO HAS SEEN THE GRAVES SAID THERE WERE WOODEN MARKERS. THAT WAS MANY YEARS AGO. WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHERE THEY ARE BURIED IN THE CEMETARY. OR AT LEAST TO CONFIRM THEY WERE ACTUALLY BURIED THERE. ANY HELP WOULD BE WONDERFUL.

Comments:I found this site very helpful and appreciate the hard work and effort that you have put into this website. I'm searching the Barker family who migrated from Virginia to North Carolina and went to Indiana and Kentucky. George Barker, Sr. was born 1730 in Rockbridge, VA and died 1805 in Wilkes, NC. He had four children his oldest son George, Jr. married an Elizabeth Sater in Wilkes, NC and both died in Parke County, Indiana. Hezekiah was born in Virginia and died in Wilkes, NC, I beleive his wife Susannah took their children and moved to Kentucky with her brother-in-law John M. Barker, as both families ended up in Kentucky. Susannah Sebastian Barker's family was in Elliott County; and John's family ended up in Morgan County, KY. Then George, Sr.'s last son Lewis Barker moved to Crittenden, Arkansas.

I was looking for the graves of George Barker, Jr. born 25 Mar 1759 in Rockbridge, VA and died 11 Sep 1841 in Parke, IN; and his wife Elizabeth Sater Barker who died about Jan 1836 in Betsy, Parke County, IN. I just found out she was buried in the Old Cox Cemetery. I don't know where the cemetery is located in Indiana.

My name is Jenny and I live in Kentucky and have been doing my own family research for the last 25 years.

If anyone knows anything about Mollie or Hannah Mary Wilson, who married Harvey C. Seward after 1880, I would love to hear from you. She is my gg grandmother and I have been unable to find anything about her. Their children were: Gertrude Apamie (Pamie) b. 1884, Edgar b. 1885, and Cora b.1887-8. By 1900 the three children were scattered among Seward relatives, Harvey had been remarried since Oct 1893 and started another family with 3 children, including Walter and Lilley, and Mollie or Hannah Mary had vanished from the record. I don't know if she died, divorced and relocated or what.
Thanks for any info anyone might have. This is my direct maternal line and very important to me. Pamie is my maternal grandmother's mother.

Comments:Dear Carol

Vic Fields, Site Director for Parke County Learning Center in Rockville, IN and I are attempting to organize a one day workshop on Basic Gravestone Restoration techniques.

Jessica Felix of Roachdale, Indiana, has agreed to lead the workshop. Our plan is to hold this session on Saturday, June 7, 2008. The workshop will consist of a short classroom presentation at the PCLC and some actual field work on gravestones in the Hixon Cemetery in Wabash Township in Parke County.

Jessica has asked that we get written permission before we go onto the cemetery site for the workshop. I’m currently trying to determine who should be contacted to obtain this permission. Since you have done so much work with the Cemeteries in Parke County, I thought maybe you might be able to give me some direction.

I have attempted to contact the township trustee, but thus far she has not returned my calls. I know there is a cemetery commission in Parke County. Does the commission have any formal/legal jurisdiction over county cemeteries? What about the County Commissioners? Should I involve them? Are there other avenues I should pursue?

Interestingly the ground for the Hixon cemetery was actually donated by my great, great grandfather so I have a direct connection to the site. However, it was my understanding that one of my distant cousins in Texas, who apparently held the deed to the property, was attempting to give the cemetery to Parke County. The last I heard there were legal issues around this property transfer. Again, the township trustee was supposedly involved in some way in this process but so far I have received no update from her.

I’d appreciate your advice on how I should proceed on this matter.

Sincerely,

Mike Lewman

I noticed one Fisher gravesite with a Clore in it. I wonder if there's relationship there since my father's side is Fisher, his mother's Cloer, and her sister married a MCClure. :)
See our webpage for lots of other names in that area.

I took my father to visit the Miller-Lodi Cemetary last year at age 80, for him to view for the first time, the resting places of his "Bright" ancestors. It was a very moving experience for both of us. I have been researching his maternal line of "Mitchell's" and seem to find all but his Grandfather, Merrit Mitchell, son of Robert,Sr.Has anyone come accross his grave anywhere?Or Merritt's son Robert?, who was quite a bit older, and a half brother to my Grandmother Carrie Louise Mitchell Bright.I certainly would love to find some Mitchell cousins to tell my father about!

Also anything on a John Shipley who was listed on the 1850 mortality schedule.

Comments:My family is from Wells County so I've not been able to find any ancestor's in Carol's pages. However, I'm hopeful someone might be looking here and recognize some of my family names. I'm looking for Arnold's, Wiecking's Harper"s and Foster's. The Wiecking family was one of the original families in Bluffton, Indiana. By marriage the Wiecking's are related to Sarah Arnold's family, Peggy Harper's family, and relatives of Steve and Jim Foster. I've spent year's working on our geneology and have the Wiecking's back to about 1500 in Germany. The various seedlings from the family names mentioned above have been much more challenging.

If you drive down the main street in Bluffton and look-up at one of the old brick buildings across from the County Courthouse you will see a Tiffany stained glass window with the name Wiecking embedded in it. It was made by Louis Comfort Tiffany and the building where it is installed was originally built to house the Wiecking Cigar Company.

Carol, this truly is a very neat idea. Thank you for creating a site where people can leave messages and dreams about finding family members. It's truly very special.

Comments:CELIA DOOLEY McINTOSH - MARRIED TO JOHN WESLEY McINTOSH.
They lived in Parke county - Greene township.

I would be interested in information anyone has on the following:

Celia Dooley Mcintosh - born 1841 - died 1874
John Wesley McIntosh - born January 12, 1837 - died 1919

Their children
William L. McIntosh - born in 1858
Samuel - born in 1859
James B. - born 1863 (probably March 1st)

James B. was my grandfather. His mother Celia died in 1874. I located the family on the 1860 census before James was born. After Celia died, James said he lived with his grandparents. I don't know if he lived with Dooley's (Celia's family) or the McIntosh's. I know that his dad John Wesley was born in Kentucky but do not know where or have a full name.

I would greatly appreciate any information I can find.

Carol, There are no words to tell you how much we appreciate that you have helped us find our great grandmother. Her grave is located in a little known graveyard that is on private property and almost overgrown. If you had not located it and taken the time to walk among the gravestones, we would never have known where Celia was buried. Thank you so much for caring.

Comments:I am interested in the names CULVER and MATER. Your cemetery listings are great. Thank you for doing all this work. My ancestor, Catherine MATTIX, was born in NJ where she married Daniel CULVER about 1790. They went to Butler County, OH and then to Parke County, probably Adams township. Their daughter, Mary CULVER, married John MATER in 1821, possibly in Parke County. I would greatly appreciate any information on these people. Thanks again for all your help. Bob Barr

Comments:One of your supporters, Jim Wilcox, just did a tremendous favor for me by photographing my great great great grandfather's headstone (Henry Ball) in Portland Mills. He also provided me with the dates of several other Balls buried in the cemetery that will allow me to fill in some blanks I had on my genealogy research. It's great to hear that the cemeteries are being maintained and preserved.

Comments:Someday I dream of finding all my Strickler great aunts and uncles' resting places, and their descendants, some of whom are buried at new Mt.Moriah Cemetery...Jessie King, Mary Jane "Jen" Fisher and her husband Rev F.E. Fisher, near their parents Nathan and Martha Strickler...I dream that some descendant of theirs is perhaps looking for me, the granddaughter of William Alexander Strickler...perhaps Bobby or Dick King is out there looking, or maybe Paul Fisher's children are seeking their distant cousins...the children of Aunt Margaret who lived in California, or perhaps any children of Howard Srickler who also lived in California. I have seen your photos as children, and I have them, from your Wisconsin trip to visit the Fishers...if you are looking for your lost cousin, look no further.

What a wonderful gift to be able to use such a site. You are one of Parke County's finest assets, Carol! Other counties' databases online in our state cannot compare to Parke, and you are part of the reason why.

Comments:Very very good work!! Keep it up.

I am looking for BERRY, associated with DAVIS & MARTIN. Of course that's not all of them(;-). I have contacted BERRY's from at least seventeen branches and no one of them will claim kinship with the others. However, I must find the ones that came from Kershaw County, SC to relocate to Mississippi. Several of them disappeared; I have found Berry's in Texas, Indiana, Missouri, etc, but have until this point been unable to make a connection or find the ones that vanished. I will accept any help I can get.
