Comments:wonderful job on the website joanne..the pictures bring back alot of memories for me..I did see myself there in the presentations album,,lol. I have a lot of great memories of the rehab..But there is 1 that will stick out in my mind for my entire life. it was the summer of 1986,,during my stay at the rehab my brother was killed in a car accident..it was a sad time for me and my family..
but what I will always be grateful for; is the love and support that was shown to me by the staff of the rehab, at such a hard time in my life..It will be carried in my heart for life,,

keep up the great job..

Comments:Hi Joann, Great website on Children's Rehab. I am a polio survivor. Did spend some short time at the Sunshine Camp round about 50-55 not quiet sure. I do remember some of the names mentioned and staff. Especially Billy Murphy, Judy Strang, yourself, Wanda Day, Debbie Prim. It is nice to bring back the good memories of so long ago, and the care and help we all so needed because of our disability.

Comments:Thank you for sharing your photos. I especially enjoyed Presentation 22 with Owen Nichol which brought back so many memories of when I would visit and he and I would walk around the lake. He would always want to sing "the Gambler" by Kenny Rogers lol ...
What a blessing to my life to see so many familiar faces.

thank you

Comments:Hi Joanne,

Just sitting here at work and thinking back to my childhood and thought i would google the Rehab and surprisingly came upon this site. Thanks so much for providing us to this walk down memory lane. I looked thru all the photo's and it brought me to tears (good tears). I think i saw a pic of me when i was 3 or 4 yrs old but not 100% sure. I had hoped to find myself in more as i spent more time in the Rehab than i did at home. Would there me any more reunions happening? If so, please contact me as i would love to attend another one.. I did attend one back in the 90's can't remember exactly when. I will continue to check this site for more updates and pictures of the past. Thanks again Joanne. Coena

Comments:Hi folks,
I was never a patient at the Sunshine Camp but my sister was there from approximately 1954-56. Her name was Patricia Thomas -- we called her Paddy. I'd love to hear from anyone who was there at that time, especially anyone who has pictures. We were from Grand Falls. I can remember visiting and almost being knocked off my feet on the corridor ramps as those in wheelchairs raced aginst each other with the more mobile ones wearing leg braces. We all thought you guys were awesome!

Comments:Hey Joanne,

Very nice job on the website. Brings back a lot of good memories. Most of the pictures must have been before my time because I don't recognize most of the younger kids. It was so nice to see Mrs. Courage and Ms. Hartery. They were such nice people and got me through many a difficult time as a pre-teen.

Keep up the good work.

Comments: HI JO, JUST BEEN LOOKING THROUGH THE WEB SITE. IT'S GREAT SEEING PICTURES OF OUR OLD BUDDIES FROM THE SUNSHINE CAMP AND THE CHILDREN'S REHAB WHERE I SPENT TIME AS A CHILD AND TEANAGER. THE EARLY YEARS AT THE SUNSHINE CAMP WERE NOT PLEASANT FOR ME, AS I REMEMBER, CRYING BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO STAY THERE. I THINK I GOT BETTER AS TIME WENT ON .AND THEN I REMEMBER LOVING SCHOOL, THE PLAYGROUNDS AND THE LOVELY DECK OFF THE BABIES WARD. ONE THING I REMEMBER NOT LOVING WAS THAT DARN FROG. HE USED TO HOP OUT OF HIS BOWL NIGHT TIME AND JUMP IN THE BATHTUB. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH OF HIM. I REMEMBER MOVNG FROM THE SUNSHINE CAMP TO THE RHAB. IN MY TEENAGE YEARS I REALLY ENJOYED BEING IN THE REHAB. I WOULD CONTACT MY FRIEND JESSIE(COLES)WICKHAM AND SUGGEST WE NEEDED A TRIP TO THE OTPATIENTS CLINIC. WE WOULD TELL DR. DUFF, OR DR. SHAPTER, OR DR. TURNER( HE WAS SO CUTE)THAT WE NEEDED THERAPY AND WE WANTED TO BE ADMITTED FOR THAT. WE HAD SO MUCH FUN THERE. IT'S SAD THAT THE REHAB IS GONE. GUESS THATS IT FOR NOW. SEE YA Rita

Joanne you have done a great job with the website. I am sorry to read that Rose Dawson passed away in 2006. I thought she must have died as no one heard from her at Christmas. I have many fond memories of Rose and going to Sunshine Camp for therapy. I hear from Pat MacLeod and Gisella Westphalen often as my sister Janet lives to close to them in Nova Scotia.
Thanks Andrea

Comments:I just stumbled on this website and I am overwhelmed by the feelings and memories so long forgotten in my psychi. I am what they call a "polio surviver." Though I was lucky in that I never had it as bad as some of the other kids I met. I was a patient at the Sunshine camp most of 1963 do to surgeries, and at the Rehab most of 1970 and part of 1971 for even more surgeries. I had my 11 birthday birthday there. Went to school there. I made so may wonderful friends there in that time. I hope its ok if I mention a few names in hopes some of you girls may remember me and get in touch with me. Here goes: Bonnie Drover, Yvonne Drover- I saw a picture of an Yvonne Drover was that you? I must have stared for at least 10 minutes. Margie Compton-do you remember all the trouble we used to get into?, Mary Stride, Cindy Ferrie- remember "give me a hoist" upon to your bed, and last but not least Corinne Campbell. I think about you guys often and wonder how your doing. I loved you guys, you made my stay at the Rehab so much fun.

Comments:Hi everyone - not sure who even remembers me. I was very very quiet as a child. I did talk with Joanne when was home and she feels that people will remember me. I am hoping during the winter to pull out some old photo albums and have a picture posted.

I do remember the Sunshine Camp but do not remember where it was in St. John's. I do remember being in the Rehabilitation Centre - down at the base.

I guess like many - a lot of us remembered Joanne M. - definitely Joanne - has to be because you are older (hehehe.

If you remember me - dont hesitate to email me - would love to chat - you can also get me on MSN at the same email address.

Comments:Hi Joanne:

This evening I was lying on the couch getting some R&R before heading out for a walk when I was reflecting on the past a little. It suddenly occured to me to surf the net for any possible info regarding the history of The Children's Rehabilitation Centre. Truthfully I expected to find very little, if anything at all. I was amazed to discover your website! While reading submissions and viewing the pictures, my mind was flooded with memories. It's just wonderful that you took the initiative to create this and I thank you for that.

I contracted polio in 1959 and spent some time at the Orthopedic, Sunshine Camp and The Rehab.

I do remember you from The Rehab. Correct me if you will, but I seem to remember you sharing a room with another girl about your age - down the hall from the younger children's ward. I assumed that it was because you were just a tad older than the rest of us.
Those were pre-school years for me. I can remember beginning Kindergarten at the Rehab. I can also remember when we (all involved with the Sunshine Camp) made the transition to the "new Children's Rehabilitation Centre". It was a beautiful sunny day. I'm guessing it was around 1964. As part of the transition celebrations there was a band (military, maybe Salvation Army Band?????) playing in the auditorium/cafeteria/multi-purpose room. We were also served plain donuts in what later became an administration office - I think. To this day whenever I see plain donuts, I am reminded of that.

As a result of polio, I have had the priviledge of meeting some amazing people that I would not have otherwise met. I only wish they could know just how grateful and how blessed I feel by having had them care for me in those years. My life is better because of them.

Well I didn't mean to ramble. I just want to commend you for doing such a wonderful job and to thank you once again.

God Bless,
Pansy (Vaters) Penney

Comments:This is a great website. It's a wonderful chance for us to reflect on the uniqueness of "The Disabled Community." This site helps me to remember all the accomplishments that we, persons with disabilities, have made in this country. However, I am forever aware that in order to move forward WE MUST UNITE for the common goal of a better life for us all. Whether The Rehab/Sunshine Camp possessed good or bad memories for us,it is a part of the fabric of who we are collectively. That "Collective Voice" must speak as one family.
