| Comments: | don't let the hipster bastards get you down. they'll always be there, and they'll always be less than you. whatever their "contacts" are, they're still poseurs. and writing about music is a real challenge. i mean, i set out to write thoughtfully about every concert i go to, and i keep putting off writing about the best ones. what's wrong with me? of course it's all worse when you have to hold down a "real" job to pay bills while all these trust-fund hipster gits work in trendy second-hand "vintage" stores (whatever happened to thrift stores?) just to look cool while they pay rent and buy records (because i guess cds just aren't cool) with daddy's money. try moving in this scene when you don't smoke and don't really drink. i've snuck on a trip to coachella with all sorts of hard-partying self-centered poseur twits whose idea of good music is restricted to whatever the hip new "underground" sound is, and some of its immediate antecedents. i guess that's this garage/punk/electroclash/emo junk and its new wave/no wave predecessors. it's like they only buy music from so-cal, greenwich village, detroit and nebraska. what's wrong with liking led zeppelin? loretta lynn? public enemy? and how does an egomaniac former smashing pumpkin sell out the metro in three minutes at $37.50 a pop? i wouldn't even have paid that much to see his old band. sorry, enough ranting. i've been missing you in dland. and i'm coming to palm beach in june. how far is that from miami? |

I've seen a few cool bands recently. On Thursday, The Gossip, a 3-piece from Olympia, WA. Great female singer and no bass but with wild, choppy Jack White guitar. My mate considered the singer looked like all his previous girlfriends rolled in to one - but gone rock 'n roll! Then a few weeks ago, my favouite US band Sparlkehorse were in town. I'm sure you must like this band, but if you're not too familiar kill to get yer hands on any of their albums. On the same weekend, there was a community festival in Bristol (only £5.00) headlined by Robert Plant. I thought he might do a mostly blues set, but there were 7 early Led Zep tracks and a final encore of Whole Lotta Love. You shoudda been there. It rocked. Finally, Massive Attack are playing a homecoming gig in the city centre on Monday (Aug 25) which I'm looking forward to, though I've not got the new album and the reviews haven't been great. I hate to detect you're a bit down at the moment. I know how dispiriting a constant round of office work can be, but things don't have to be that way. I expect you know that as a Spaniard you could work anywhere in the European Union without restrictions. Why don't you give that a shot for a year? Your level of linguistic skill would be in big demand in the UK, especially in Tourism, as most Brits cannot speak a word of Spanish but everyone insists on going there on holiday. Though we found different groups at Kenyon (i think we wanted different things from our social lives there), outside of Kenyon I would much rather communicate with you than with most of the people I work with. |

| Comments: | i'm not keeping up very well. -- the last record i got was cave-in's 'tides of tomorrow'. can i just say, the best fucking band in the world! they rocked the metro. the only bad part was that tickets were $10 and still only about 200 people came (of a possible 800-1000). ray guns. -- i've never really been to miami, but i bet chicago is better. though i have a sucky data entry job (permanent starting thursday; benefits will be nice), i also intern weekly at slang productions, a division of r. kelly's chocolate factory (formerly chicago trax, the idiot). i'm learning, but it's still bad as hell. between that and courses at columbia college i should learn how to produce music, work in a studio, that sort of stuff. if i ever learn guitar (i.e. practice) and can work out reason, i'll be a one-man wrecking crew. you should get in a van and drive to chicago. the whole world of cool people i know should come to chicago. chicago is the place to be. chicago holds the future. -- my future, at least. |

They are so much fun--the last time I saw them was across the river in KY, and they made everyone from KY get on one side and everyone from OH get on the other (this was towards the end of show, right before they did Baba O'Reilly, when everyone, especially the bandmembers, was drunk) and there were many more ohioans, and we spat beer at each other and they made me the captain beer spitter and then I got to go up on stage for the purpose of spitting, but since I'm frugal I just drank the one they gave me. Middlesex is on the backburner because I was getting annoyed with it. I needed a break from that family. But I will go back to it, so keep me posted on your thoughts. I've read a whole lot of reviews of it that compare it to like Saul Bellow, which I totally don't see. To me its just been like Rushdie stripped of the poetry. I picked up a copy of Vigin Suicides today so maybe I'll dig that more. Yeah, how good is Rachel Papers? I did a whole lot of trying to stifle my laughter on the train with that. Have you read Amis' auto biography Experience? Its tops too. I saw the movie version of Rachel Papers in the video shop the other day but was too scared that I'd just hate it to hire it out. It has Dexter Fletcher from Press Gang (I don't know if you got that in America, kinda Brittish Degrassi) and Ione Skye and was set in the eighties. I'm reading Joan Didion's Democracy which kicks ass. I'm listening to Pilot to Gunner and Neutral Milk Hotel who do the same. Update over. Hope you're rockin'. Check. |

| Comments: | sylvia?! ehat has happened to you? even i have moved back to the diaryland neighborhood--so you must too. the first time i read your latest entry i didnt catch the chuck klosterman (fargo rock city) reference, but this time i definately made a shreaky noise when i saw it. i have theee huuugest crush on chuck. actually he was a columnist for the akron beacon journal in my home town of akron, ohio. so when i was in high school i would read his column every morning over a bowl of cereal. i dont know what happened to his column though...i think two weeks ago he had an article in the new york times magazine about a guns n roses cover band. once i saw him looking at guitar rock magazines at borders. so--i havent purchased the book yet, for fear that i wont catch all the glam rock references, but let me know how it is.

(john hannah is my celebrity A [take that ricka !]) i love the boyfriend with all of my heart, but when i was at the station and some scottish men came in for a signed stereophonics cd (which i could not find) i tried to keep them there as long as possible so that they would talk to me. i think i liked the way they spoke more than anything else. they were decked out in football gear. they probably love manchester united or something equally idiotic.

the house is gorgeous and all full of evergreen scents and tree love. we even have a wreath on the door this year. it's our first christmas alone, and we're so happy. to celebrate our new found freedom, he is cooking a briscuit tonight for us and a friend. we want to have people all over to our holiday home. but yes, al green. i am wanting more jazz, soul, and all of that sort of music in my life. i am sick of rock n roll. for now. maybe because i hear it wherever i go. |

| Comments: | i like the work stories. i worked there too, so i know what yr talking about. except i don't think i sold too many reader's advantage cards. i thought they were kind of a rip-off. i guess i felt that way mainly because my employee discount was three times as much. being fired for stealing from the cafe sucks. when i first started, we were allowed to eat whatever we wanted for free, when we were working. but they changed the policy about a month or so later. except we kept eating for free anyway. the manager just told us to watch our asses around the big boss. heee. i love when my boss is subversive when dealing with their boss. |
