Comments:Gary... Loved the site!! I grew up in Yardville during the 50's & 60's, moved to Groveville in 1975 (in a rental), purchased a house on Main St a few years later... and still live here.
I totally enjoyed reading everything and loved the pictures posted. I have a great interest in local history, in fact, I stumbled onto your site while looking for old maps of the area.
Keep up the fine work. I'll be a regular return visitor from now on. -tom t

Comments:Great page!! I lived in Groveville Gardens on Longwood Dr. I also had Mrs. Longstreet for Kindergarden; 2ND grade was Mrs. Roots and 3RD was Mrs. Butter. I also remember the Turtle pond Linda Miller's refering to with the hollow tree! Sledding on Pettyridge;and Betty's Post office for penny candy. During summer break we hung out at the School challenging Sunnybrae & Yardville Schools to Quate tourniments and winning mostly all. In our teens we held a few dances at the fire house and with the help of everybody they were somewhat successfull. We had allot of great baseball games behind the firehouse. I still remember stopping at at the corner Grocery for a five cent garlic pickle out of the barrel on the way home from school!! I live in Fla. now; married Kathy Piotrowski from Robbinsville. Her family owned the Esso by Russerts back then. I'll have to think some more and write back!! Thanks for the memories!!! Vince

Comments:Hi Gary,
Been years since I saw you or anyone from Groveville, nice job, brought back a lot of memories. I may even have some pics for ya from the Fire Co. If I can find them. Heard somebody was talking about a reunion, I'd be up for that. I still live in Bordentown, look me up sometime, I still cruise through town now and then trying to remember who lived where. It's funny how at one time I knew everyone in town. We put a lot of work into that old Church when they remodeled. I remember pretty much the whole town came out to help. Sunday school kept me straight. Take care, Michael

I remember the great summers, chasing lightning bugs at dusk, playing in the woods, and sledding down our hill in the winter! Mostly I remember that all the neighbors knew each other and looked out for each other. We had the best Halloweens ever! Seems like no one trick or treats anymore. I live in Florida now. When I get to go through my old pictures, I'll have Cheryl send them to you.

I actually got the site from both Claire Zarr and my brother Chuck awhile ago, but didn't check it until today when I was looking for your home address on Church Street. I"m sending you several pictures of your Mom from my Mother's box of old pictures. Mom, Ethel Beideman, passed away at age 90 last September. What wonderful memories I have of times together with many of the people featured in your memory pages. I"m sure I can find more old Groveville things in Mom"s treasures and will send them along as I find them. I spent 36 years teaching Kindergarten and 1st grade in Shillington, PA and retired to Ocala, Flordia with my husband, Harrie, in 2007. I look forward to viewing more on you site in the future. Comments:Hi Gary and all fellow Grovevillians,
I too have not lived in Groveville for 31 years, but just like most of you, Groveville will always be home.
I can help with naming most of the kids in the 1958 Kindergarten picture. There are only four that I cannot remember and there is a mixture of Old Groveville (OG) and Groveville Gardens (GG) kids.
Seated from left to right is Jane Dwier(OG), Lyle Mushinski(OG), Linda LeJambre(GG), Cindy Amico(GG), Sandy Gagnon(GG)and Choppers Thompson(OG).
In the second row from left to right is Billy Rochford(OG), Dave Lavelle(GG), Cheryl Biolotta(GG) and the four that I do not remember.
Standing in the back row from left to right is Dale Nugent(GG), Mike Czako(OG), Skip Carvale(OG), Dave Gronostajski(GG), Tom Weiss(OG), Roxanne Shiarappa(GG), Paul Simpson(GG), Patty Bell(GG) and Glenn Kelly(GG). It goes without saying that our wonderful teacher was of course Miss Longstreet.
I have a picture of the 1959 first grade class with Miss Elias and also the 1960 second grade class with Mrs. Brecht. If you would like to borrow them, contact me and I will get them to you.
I think that what you are doing with this is fantastic and please keep up the good work.
Yours truly,
The youngest of the Weiss Brothers, Tom Weiss

Comments:Hi,
Great job on your site. I was trying to do some research on my grandmother's side and came up here. She would have been 100 years old this past May. She is buried in the Groveville cementary beside her mother. My grandmother was Lillian Inman her mother was Rebecka Inman. Rebecka was born in 1886 she died in 1944. She was married to John Greely Mansfield. Rebecka's parents were Edward and Mary Inman. Rebecka worked at the cotton mill. I was looking for information about the cotton mill. I think I read that a James Woodward owned it. I am trying to find out who my grandmother's father was. She never told us. We never really asked. My grandmother was born in 1908. So Rebecka was about 22. When my grandmother was born. Thanks for any help.

There used to be an old hollow tree there that you could climb up in and hide. Mainly, there were us kids running around in the woods, making forts and fishing. I moved right after I graduated from Hamilton High School East. I lived in Miami for a few years, then moved to Columbia Missouri. I'm not in Seattle Washington. Been here for about 28 years now. I've worked for the Cith of Seattle all that time and in a few months, I can retire. I'm moving back to Fl. Orlando to be exact. Cheryl and I just found one another again. It was great to talk to her again and find out they have been looking for me all these years. She lives in Orlando too. Looking at all the photos of the old hometown sure brought back some good memories. Thanks for having this site.

Comments:Gary,

What a wonderful job!! I have lived in FL for almost 30 years, and it is home now, but this made me homesick!! A couple of memories that I can add to your collection are about Jo and Harley Hepburn's store. When I was just a little girl, I lived with my parents and sister in the two story house next to Moyers on Main Street. Mary and Lloyd Bowers lived downstairs and we lived upstairs.....Howard, Florence, Sally Ann and Jill Jones. Mom would send me to Hepburn's store with a bowl and a piece of waxed paper and Harley would put scoops of ice cream in the bowl, cover it with the waxed paper, and send me running home before it melted. I also remember that they would put up a line in the store and hang all the halloween masks out for us to choose one.I think they were 15 cents. They were made of some type of stiffened muslin and by the end of an evening of trick or treating the color would come off all around your mouth. Another treat from the store were the ice cream dixie cups (chocolate and vanilla) that had pictures of movie stars on the inside of the lid.

A couple of things I remember about Groveville School concern fundraising! I remember selling seeds and also taking orders for Prior's donuts and delivering them door to door. Three flavors.....glazed, cream filled and jelly.

Another memory is of the "hot lunch" our Mothers would get together and cook for us. They were 25 cents and were served downstairs in the lunch room (turn right at the coal bin!). It wasn't every week. More like once a month.

Speaking of the coal bin, do you remember how they spread the cinders on the playground and how they always ended up embedded in your knees? Remember sliding down the slide on a piece of waxed paper so you would go faster?

I was a summer playground supervisor (my first job!) one year and we would take the kids to Woodlawn Pool sometimes. You could always smell the chlorine a block away!

I'll be checking your wonderful memory pages regularly. You are very talented. Thanks so much...

Jill

King outbid my dad by a thousand dollars for the property across the street. Mendelson refused to sell the pond bed and falsely accused him of taking creek water. Evidence of an indian village was found as the pit was dug. I donated things found to the Abbot House. The water coming out of the pipe supposedly came from our property under the road.

Comments:Gary,
My sister has been working with Tom Glover and with that I found this Groveville site. We lived on Ham. Sq. Crosswicks Rd near Rt 130 on Back Creek. Went to Yardville school and knew Groveville kids from the late 50's early 60's. My Dad was good friends with Ray Dwier and I have a wall clock he gave my dad that once hung in the old Groveville Fire House. It still runs and maybe it worked crazy in its days at the fire house. The second hand speeds up - slows down and even moved backwards! But keeps perfect time. Crazy clock but I have loved it all my life. My dad Steve was a ham - W2QJO - Yardville. Keep up the great work and I sure will be checking your site as well as Tom's for Hamilton. Fond memories of Yardville/Groveville/Crosswicks. Live now in Browns Mills, Jersey boy all my life.

Comments:Gary, Ive been on the computer -on your site- ever since I left church this morning. What great memories! I have loads of puctures and material that you may borrow (mine go back even further). I can identify many of the kids in Barry's class. I'm going to send this on to Collin Stackhouse who has been in contact with me about Groveville memories. I think the vacation bible school picture is of just one or two classe. None of the kids in my group were in it Keep up the good work Shirley

Comments:Loved visiting your site! I lived in Groveville Gardens 1953 til 1982 when I moved to Florida. Also went to Grovevile School and Miss Longstreet was my kindergarten teacher, I had a Miss Murray for 1st although Miss Elias was still there teaching the same grade. In 2nd I had Mrs Brecht but after that grade we were shipped off to Yardville. Alos attended Groveville Methodist Church. I recognize a lot of the old names you've mentioned. I remember Lester's corner store and Betty's candy shop. Boy, a quarter could buy a big bag of it back then. We collected soda bottles to pay for it. I've added you to my favorites so I can keep checking to see what you add. I really miss Groveville1 There's no place like home!!

Comments:Gary, Claire sent me this site. It brings back a lot of memories. I think we were the last generation in Groveville to truly expierence the small town life in a totally positive way. I still think fondly of the summer times on your parents porch with you, Tom, Robbie, Glen, "Joe Pete" and others. I smile thinking about "Miss Rollins" tending the mountain pink flowers on the hillside. I've been gone far longer than I ever lived there, but Groveville's still special, it's home.
Thanks for the memories, I'll check in often.
Mike

Comments:Thanks for creating a blog about our Village of Groveville. Sharing your knowledge has taken me on several wonderful trips down memory lane. If you need assistance naming the students in Yardville school's sports club, I can positively identify all but three of them and have a good guess who those three may be, too.

Keep up the good work, Gary. I look forward to checking in on a regular basis.

My best to you and your family,
Daryl

Comments:Great start, Gar...keep up the good work. You've already dredged up some fond memories for me! Hopefully, you'll also inspire other Groveville 'kids' to look through that old stuff mom and dad, and previous generations, left behind. Sadly, too many think it's 'just junk'. It's trashed and gone forever without a second thought. Maybe they wouldn't have done it if they knew it holds the key to such a wealth of family history and ties to our past. It answers so many questions about who we are and where we come from. You know I'm already a devotee and plan to pass on some of my own treasures to add.

I'm so proud of you for being one of a dying breed - one who still values family heritage. You had those second thoughts and the curiosity to begin checking it out. You've also come a long way from hating to write history reports in school, to being a devoted local historian. Mr. Van Allen would be proud of you! Best of luck in your endeavor! Claire

Comments:Gary: Thanks for the startup. Happy Tom G Encouraged you to write you own. I'm interested in all the local history. I grew up in Trenton in a neighborhood called Goosetown on Kossuth St. Located between the Southard St Bridge and the old Stone Bridge on N. Clinton Ave, we considered the entry to East Trenon near the Trenton Potteries. The D & R canal was a big part of my youthful adventure. Keep up the Good Work. Jim

Comments:Dear Gary,
My father, F. William Van Ness died in December of 2005. In reviewing his papers I found a wedding book showing that my grandmother Fredericka E. McCabe was married in 1909 in the Groveville Methodist Church. Included in the material were postcards of the mill, the mill store where your great grandmother worked, an old school and some other buildings. My grandmother's parents were Walter McCade and Adele Selina McCade. The wedding book includes a list of guests.
The pastor's name was Rev. Dr. James E Diverty. My grandfather and my father lived in Roebling and worked at the Roebling Company.
Your posting were very timely since I just found this information today, Monday September 3rd' and it would appear you just started to post.
My Best,
Fred
