Comments:Today, whilst visiting my Mother and Father in the Leoville Nursing home, I met Carol and Lawrence Fusick as they were sitting with Carols' father, Mr. Art Strom. It was a pleasure to meet up with my friends from years past, I only wish that it could have been under different circumstances. Later, as I was driving away, I thought of Mr. Strom and I recalled a Life Lesson that he had taught me many years ago. This goes back to the days when the Shell Lake Golf Course was being built. I was tagging along with Earl Iverson,Raymond Eberle and Ray Field as they played a game of Golf, ( I had never hit a ball in my life at that time and was along for the walk only) after a few holes, Earl suggested that I try to hit a ball - I flailed away and eventually hit the ball a few yards, Seemingly out of nowhere, Mr. Strom came driving up on his little Grey Ford Tractor and asked me for the $0.45 required for the round of Golf - needless to say I did not have one red cent on my person at the time so he said that he would let me go for the time being BUT that I had to pay him at some future date. I picked bottles and scrounged until I was able to pay him the fee. And the valuable lesson that he taught me that day ( whether he knew it or not) was that I would never participate in any exercise unless I was in possession of the required funds.

With over 40 years of seperation we didn't actually hit things off too well. Just too many past demons and unresolved inner conflicts to deal with and all that crap. But I was all the same befriended by the Garand family of Iraquio Lake, namely Maureen, Peter and Roger. I meant to keep in touch with them, but other shit got in the way. Would really love to re-establish contact with them all , espescialy Roger because he is a good artist.

Comments:Greetings! With my recent retirement, for the first time in my life, have had time to think and recollect. Immediately went to good ol' Shell Lake site. Seen alot of names that ring bells. Debbie Ohrn, Vic Primeau, Debbie Dreaver, Linda Dufour - where are you LeAnne??? and too many more to mention. After my previous marriage to Dennis Fraser went by the wayside, I married a man from Montreal and currently live in the town of Hinton, Alberta and run a trapline with him north of here. Still love the outdoors and spend most of my time there in our cabin in the woods with our dog. Both my parents have passed away now, Charles Gagnon and Hannah Rodocker and have been laid to rest in the Shell Lake cemetery. My siblings are still with me, Margaret, Patrick and Louise. I welcome any contacts with old friends that check on your site and have not entered there names yet into your dream book.

Comments:SLEEPLESS IN POZA RICA Last night was quite an eventful night here in Poza Rica, Mexico. There was a Running Gun Battle that occurred on the Road adjacent to my Staff House. The road runs parrallel to the property line and is elevated so that the Road is about at the same elevation as the Roof of the Staff house. I was awakened at Approx. 11;30 pm by a loud noise and the house vibrating. The noise was quickly followed by an eruption of Small Arms Fire. My first reaction to the noise and subsequent stacato of small arms fire was that someone was attempting to escape arrest and had leaped onto the Roof of the House. Instinct took over and I swung into immediate action, which consisted of hurling the covers back and throwing myself off the edge of the bed onto the Tiled floor which was unbelievably cool , and caused me to instantly leap into a standing position and suck in a large gulp of air, I threw myself back onto the floor, Groping wildly for my weapons stored under the bed, which consists of a Sling Shot and a Machete. Whilst feverishly searching for the two articles of weaponry, I became acutely aware of the similarities between LIVE ROUNDS being fired and a very powerful LAXATIVE. After what seemed to be an eternity, I was finally able to latch on to the Sling Shot and the Machete, and once armed, I felt confident enough to sneak about the house peering out every available window, in search of possible Invaders. All the while staying LOW so as to hopefully avoid any stray bullets that may have entered through the windows. The Gunfire increased in intensity and I noted the rattling of the small arms fire was now being drowned out by the bark of much larger weapons and the occassional sound of exploding hand grenades all punctuated by the loud Boom and vibration of Bazooka Rockets. I was now wide awake and determined to protect myself against any and ALL intruders, Fortunately for me the Running Gun Battle remained on the road and moved to the South of the Staff house and back again for approximately 30 minutes, Finally it drifted further north and to the east of my neighborhood. And that, was a good thing for only then did I realize that I was without ammunition for my Slingshot and the Decorative Machete, was so dull that I doubt that it could have inflicted an actual cut. This morning, I was to learn that the Running Gun Battle had in fact been between the Military and a Group of Bandits and that there were some deaths and approximately a half dozen injured. Mexico is currently suffering a number of evils 1. The Opposing Political Parties are seeing that someone is Kidnapping and Killing their Rivals in the upcoming Elections. 2. The Drug Cartels are waging war with each other in an effort to gain control of the Lucrative Illicit Drug trade. 3. The Government has the Military locked into an ALL OUT attempt to destroy the Drug Cartels. All of these things makes Mexio a NOT Very Nice place to beat times The most AMAZING thing was that after all the Chaos of last night, as I drove around the city today, everything seemed absolutely normal, with the Children walking to school in groups, laughing and chatting as they went. The Shop owners were busy opening their small shops and preparing for the day. Everything seemed to be business as usual. I find that to be truly remarkable.

Comments:In anticipation of the ReUnion, here is a little Chuckle for you....HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL THERE. Reunion Road Trip While on the road to our last reunion, a classmate and his wife stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant and resumed their trip. When leaving, the classmate's wife unknowingly left her glasses on the table and she didn't miss them until they had been driving for about forty minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses. All the way back, the classmate became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn't let up for a single minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant. As the wife got out of the car and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, our classmate (the old geezer) yelled to her, "While you're in there, you might as well get my wallet and credit card."

The words mentioned were: Boom a lacka Boom a lacka Ki yi yang We are the kids from the Shell Lake Gang Rip saw see saw one, two, three You can try and so can we.... and so on. I can't remember if that one came before, or after, the cheer that went: Hoikety choik Hoikety choik Hoikety choikety choo You rickety ree You rickety roo We can try and so can you.... I was in elementary school when the change from one to the other came about, but it seems to me that some of the high school girls, like Edna Stevenson, were responsible.

Seems to me the change was made when Mr. Labrash was still principal. So, who says rap signals the demise of civilization as we know it. Comments:MINI – REUNION #1 Have we not all felt that little tremour of trepidation when we meet with a group whom we have not seen for awhile? I felt that way as I walked into the meeting room at the Shady Rest in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island on a Saturday afternoon in late October. Now, for some years Bernice ( Reithaug ) Murcheson and I have met with Gwen ( Johnstone ) Wilson at the “ Rest” when she comes out from Shellbrook to visit her daughter on the Island. We always have a wonderful time catching up, but this year was even better. We were joined by Linda ( Haigh ) Walsh who came over from Surrey and Robert Simonar who caught the ferry from Powell River. The three ladies were already looking at their menus when Robert and I arrived, but that was forgotten as we greeted each other, laughed and hugged and felt enveloped in a feeling of good times and good friends. Lucky for us we had an understanding waitress, as eating was put to one side as the noise level went up with a cacophony of voices catching up, remembering and just enjoying each others company Bernice brought us back to earth by ordering her usual quesedilla, but then out came the pictures. Of course many were of our children, and a handsome group of young adults they are, too. Then came the grandchildren photos, such a collection of cuties and all so advanced. But then, aren't all grandkids? We had also brought along pictures of days of long ago and soon one could hear comments like, “ .... just who is that standing behind Eddie Hart?”, “ Oh, yes, I remember........ I wonder what ever became of her?”, “ What a character! Do you remember the time he......”, “ That's Zeb standing beside Bruce. It must be in front of the old skating rink.”, “Why did they call him Plastic Man?”,“She was so cute. We were all in love with her!” And, “ Look, here's the Hall.I remember when ..... and ...... would stand on that corner and smooch themselves silly....”, and so on. But, time and tide wait for no one, especially when you live on an island .You are at their mercy and that of the ferry schedule. Pictures were taken and then, very reluctantly, we gathered ourselves together and parted. It had been a golden afternoon, more treasured for that chest of memories we shared.

My grandfather,Reg Carter homesteaded at Paddling Lake, think now its called Iriquos Lake.My mother Bessie went to school in the area. Was wondering if anyone remembered them? We tried to find a camp site on Iriquos Lake but could not find one. We live in east central Alberta ,a little place named Hardisty, our claim to fame here is a huge crude oil tank farm that is under massive expansion now. Hope to hear from anyone who remembers Mother or Grandfather.

One of the many memories I have of the old school was from when I was in Grade three or four. Marcel Lamontagne caught me in the Hallway one recess and he gave me a WHACK, I turned and started running to my home rooom to complain to Mrs. Grace Simonar who was my Teacher at the time, as I lumbered past the Boys Washroom, I ran Smack into Mr. Len LaBrash who was the Principal at the Time. he was quick to take me by the ear and walked me the full length of the hallway, lecturing me every step of the way on the rule of NO RUNNING IN THE HALLS, he then deposited me out the South Exit into the yard. I still dream and Scheme of my Ultimate Revenge on Marcel Haaaaaaaa.

While down south this winter I had occasion to visit, play some golf and spend a few days in Palm Springs with a former Shell Lake resident Duane Dallman and his wife Marilyn from Calgary who were wintering there. Nice to get together with old friends. I was glad to read on the Shell Lake Website that the powers to be have decided not to close the Shell Lake School. After all, if I recall correctly I think the present day unit at one time was called the Shell Lake School Unit. Hi to all in Shell Lake and who reads this newsletter that remembers me.

I too sent an email to the board office voicing my dismay at the thought of losing the school. It is good to know that the students will be able to remain part of their own community, instead of being bussed to another and thereby perhaps not really fitting into either.

Comments:I have permission from Earl Wagner to send this copy of the letter I received from his wife Sheilah. As you see, Earl has had quite an experience! We are all pulling for him. "Get back on your feet, Earl! Remember, you came from good strong and stubborn roots here at Shell Lake!" Here is Sheilah's letter: Hi Doris, just in case you have been wondering why you have not heard from Earl in sometime, I thought I would bring you a quick update. On the 27th of December at 8:30 P>M> he colllapsed on our kitchen floor screaming in pain like I had never heard before. Very quickly he was out and I called 911. Could not get the boys but 911 called back and got an ambulance (which is just down the road from us as well as the fire station). He stopped breathing just as the paramedics arrived. This big burly fireman promptly picked me up and took me into our diningroom and would not let he anywhere near the kitchen. However, they brought Earl back and then the nightmare began. We were transferred to the St. Catharines General in the ambulance. They would not let me out of the ambulance until he had been taken inside, and mysteriously the family appeared (they had called the house and the firemen told them to get to the hospital immediately). After an eternity of time --tests take time scans, blood work, etc. -- the wanted to take us into a room and I refused to go I did not fall off the turnip truck and I knew what that "nice quiet room away from everyone" meant. Anyway a nurse came in and said the doctor was still with Earl and it was very critical as he was bleeding internally and they could not stop the hemmoraging. They took us all in to see him and he was in such raging pain and nothing was controlling it. Dr. Hardy was very blunt he looked me in the eye and said your husband is dying and there is nothing we can do for him here. We do not have a vascular unit in Niagara, I am trying to get him shipped out. I asked where and he said either McMaster University in Hamilton, or Toronto University General. When? He said immediately. So within 30 minutes from the time the helicopter left the roof of Toronto General till he was on the operating table. He left with a ten percent chance of making it across the lake. All he could say because he was conscious by this time was "all my years in the air force and I never did crew on a helicopter and now I don't think I am going to enjoy it". Funny he does not remember saying that and really doesn't remember much of anything. The bottom line is he had the trip got through the surgery and 5 1/2 hrs later the doctor came out and told us what had happened. He had a triple abdominal aneurisim rupture of the aroetic vessel. Usually this is instant and final. How he made it is a miracle Dr. Lindsay say. However, I told him the miracle was called "priesthood". I was so out of it I did not even explain to him what I was talking about. Anyway, at that point he was on life support, a ventilator and so much more I do not even want to think about it. They put him into an induced coma as well and intended to keep him that wayfor about 12 hours. However, at this point he had a 35 percent chance of survival. Dr. Lindsay, who is the crème de la crème as far as doctors (vascular surgeons} go did the surgery ==he has so many initials after his name it is astounding. -- he said his body was very clean, very strong, and it belied his age. He asked does he smoke -- no -- does he drink -- no and I said add no tea or coffee either he commented that this was the explanation plus I informed him Earl had just lost 53 lbs. One of my sons said "some poster boy for weight watchers eh" Dr. Lindsay gave a thumbs up and said very definitely. With that weight it would be just a history case now. Well the stubborn German started coming out of the coma on his own around noon on the Thursday and so they let him come out, took him off life support and it has been up every since. All of the hurdles he had to meet and climb over really never materialized. He did not suffer brain damage (other than his normal problems ha ha), no stroke, no heart attack, and no paralysis of the legs. He was on a ventilator for several days and oxygen up until the day before his release as well as a catheter tube. Well eight days after the surgery they said take him home. There was a "bad bug" in the hospital and he just did not have anything in him to fight and would not have been able to survive. Dr. Lindsay said his body was just too traumatized. So we brought him home. Gorden commented that they day we brought him home did I not see all the patients being evacuated, needless to say I was watching over Earl no one else. The first 30 hours were pretty scarey because I had nothing here to look after him, but very quickly we got a bed rail installed, a tub grab bar (which he can't use yet but will in the future I am sure} and all the other things needed to care for him. We also have a nurse coming in, a personal care giver who bathes him and a therapist {who is a bit pushy and I had to put the brakes on him as per our doctor's instructions}, and our darling family doctor is making house calls as well. She is acting as the specialists third arm here at home. The bottom line he is home, doing well, completely unable to do anything, is so weak it is a little unsettling but I know he will recover they say itwill take about 9 to 12 months before he is able to function again. But he is alive and is one of a very few that has made it. The one rupture, Dr. Lindsay said was the size of a grapefruit, and the other two one the size of a soft ball and the smallest a golf ball. He has a fourth one that has to be taken care of later but at this point it is not lifethreatening and they will keep an eye on it. They mentioned to me something about laser surgery when he is fully recovered. But we are not talking about it right now and we do not want Earl every knowing at this point. This Dr. Lindsay is some superman let me tell you. He had operatedon a woman from Toronto that afternoon with a singular rupture and she was still on life support when we left the hospital == don't know how she made out. I now find out so many people have not made it '' --Conway Twitty, Roy Orbison, Gordon Lightfoot (he was in surgery four times and in a coma for 6 weeks --thought he had had a 12 hour snooze --was not able to go back on tour for over 18 months -- Earl and Gorden went to see him in Roy Thompson Hall Toronto at his first concert afterwards and Earl said he looked terrible (did not know at the time what his problem had been) and then they went to theCasino Niagara to see him last year andEarl said he looked terrific. Now we find out about all these people and boy can we relate. I just made Earl's appointment to take him back to Toronto on February 19th at ll A.M> for his follow-up with Dr. Lindsay. When I called his office, the receptionist said "oh yes, Mrs. Wagner our Miracle Man" That is what they kept calling him in the hospital. But bringing him home 14 days early I can say "miracle man" and mean it. Earl's comments are "small hick town boy makes good in Toronto" At least he hasn't lost his sense of humor. At times he is just too weak and too tired to even talk thought, but this will change I am sure. We are under very strict conditions here we cannot have anyone but family and clergy in the house and the medical people of course. He is allowed to sit up for about 20 minutes and then back to bed. He is walking or should I say shuffling along. But it is getting better. He came home with 20 lbs of fluid in his legs and feet but that is gone now. All told he has lost another 20 lbs of weight and is very gaunt but when I weighed him this morning he had gained 2 lbs back. His appetite is good and all in all I think he is doing great. So until he is a little stronger and able to sit up you won't be hearing from him. But know that all is well. And we are greatly blessed to be sure. I know Heaavenly Father was watching over him and did preserve him. Although we tell him Heavenly Father did not want him right now so smarten up. Sheilah

This brought back memories of the winters in Shell Lake, I recalled the many cold nights where one could find comfort in the confines of the Curlng rink, and as vividly as if it were yesterday, I could hear the door slam behind me, the smell of Freshly brewed coffee, Hot Dogs and Hamburgers. SHOUTS OF SWEEP! SWEEP! and the PEEL of the Rocks. It is comforting to remember a time that was... Best Wishes to ALL.......

I first visited our familie's homestead beside the lake, when I was 13, and the impression has stayed in my heart and memories for a lifetime. Although, Dad settled in B.C., after the war, he would thrill us with wild tales of his adventures and up-bringing at Shell Lake; so much so, that one of us Nermo's can be seen every so often, in town, making the required visit. Say "Hi!" to cousin Donna for us at the Hotel, and cousin Lorne Nelson (I still feel bad about loosing your favourite hat in the lake, and I am sure you do too!) Comments:Hi Folks, It's so nice in this day and age to quickly visit the web and get the latest news about happenings in ShellLake, Saskatchewan. Say "Hi!" to cousin Donna for us at the Hotel, and cousin Lorne Nelson (I still feel bad about loosing your favourite hat in the lake, and I am sure you do too!) Also, a special hello to Arnie Surestead, I hope the intervening 40 years has treated you well, since we last adventured together. All the best to everyone. Arnie Nermo (PS. You all have to see the sat-photos of the lake from the Google Earth website - incredible!)

Comments:My name is Linda Walsh(Haigh) and I live in Surrey, BC. My husband Jack and I are semi retired. I was just told about this website a few weeks ago and since then have spent a few hours pouring over the guest book, trying to remember all the names and who or how they belong. Thank goodness the ladies are adding their maiden names! I moved to Shell Lake from Canwood part way through grade 8 and graduated in 1965. My father (Frank Haigh) was the CNR station agent and my mother(Mabel) worked at some point in Sadie Proctor's telephone office. When they retired, they moved into Frank Gooden's house just behind the community hall. Both have since passed on and I no longer had a real link to the community and what was happening. Congratulations to the efforts of the Shell Lake web site. I will be an avid reader from now on. I look forward to anyone willing to contact me to catch up on a "few" of the years past. Linda

Have been chatting with a few classmates and we were hoping that it might be possible to have an 'unorganized' Reunion this summer. Just sit around the campfire and sing "Wasn't that a Party!!!" (Sound familiar?!?!) No big organization - just show up!!! You will all be in charge of buying your own burgers!!! So, anyone that was in our class any year (or more) from Grade 1 (1969) to Graduation (1981), Please drop one of us a line. If there is enough interest - we can set up a website for everyone to post and read each others' happenings...who will attend, who won't...etc..... Hope to hear from all of you soon!!!

Comments:"I'm very honored that the Spirit of the Northern Lakes magazine has once again used Memorial Lake to display on their front page. It is one of the photos of the beach that I took last year and also on the inside cover on the Table of Contents page - those are my girls in the tube. :-) Memorial Lake Park had also used my photos on the back page in their add as well. It's so wonderful to see Memorial Lake/Shell Lake be so exposed in this way. A number of my photos have been used again this year in the magazine. That is very exciting for me, for the town and for the park. Unfortunately because of miscommunication, my name was not posted next to the pictures. That happens at times but it is unfortunate. My family loves coming to Memorial Lake/Shell Lake during all the seasons. It's a wonderful place of quietness, to get away and relax and we love the beauty of the area. We love getting to know many wonderful people up there and developing friendships. I love to take pictures up there. :-) That is definitely a passion of mine, a gift given to me from God. I love to use that gift to share His creation with others. I share a number of my personal life stories and photography on my website www.lisas-pics.blogspot.com so feel free to check it out anytime."

I attended high school in Shell Lake back in the '50s under the capable guidance of the late Mr. Len LaBrash. I have been away from Shell Lake for many years now but still occasionally make it back for a visit. I was fascinated by the "history" of Shell Lake back in the 1930-41 era. Sounds like those were the days!

Also, not that far away, I am also searching for anyone who knew the Matthews clan - in particular, George Matthews - son of Alexander Matthews and Mary Jane Bailey, (both Alexander and Mary Jane are buried in the General Cemetery in Lestock) who married Jessie McKay - daughter of Edward McKay and Jessie Muggaberg! I am trying to piece together our family history! thank-you and nice site!
