| Comments: | Our family moved to John Street, Earby in 1953 from Dewsbury. There was my father Albert, my twin brothers, Colin and Robin and sister Audrey. I worked at Bristol Tractors in the drawing office until I joined the RAF for national service in 1956. When I returned from Malta in 1958 they had all moved to 69 Kenilworth Drive, next door to Charlie Goacher and his family. I eventually moved away and married. We have five children, (more twins) and 18 Grandchildren (also including twins) and they say they skip a generation.
My dad moved to Cornwall for a few years but later came back to Barlick, and died in 1979. Robin lives in Barlick and Colin is still in Earby. Audrey is in Brierfield. My wife and I, with our youngsters moved to Bradford in 1969 and have been here ever since. |

I looked at a google satellite image recently and can see a few changes but our old back garden was very clear. |

| Comments: | Hi,I enjoyed your site very much and had a trip down memory lane.In approx' 1958,my family moved from Salcombe in Devon to No 76 Salterforth Rd.I was 3 years old at the time.I can remember a small stream at the front of the property and a hawthorn bush.Mr and Mrs Mc'grath lived next door.I remember the rag and bone man and the pop man.
My Mother used to clean the library once a week(next to Dales farm egg packing station) and my father helped to run the youth club. I also remember all the garages at the back of Salterforth road and playing 'Hide and Seek' around them.We also had a big 50 gallon drum and used to roll along the dirt track behind the garages, making ourselves sick. There used to be a couple of garages to the east of the ranch, which was like a land fill site and a tall wire fence which seperated the field from it,As kids we had a myth, that all the stream area was sinking sand and we must never go near it or we will get sucked down. I can remember Yates shop at the bottom of the hill and going to it with my fourpence pocket money for lollys and 'spice' I have on 2 occasions been down the hill on my 'bogey' and once hit the tree at the bottom near the shop and hurt myself badly. My parents -Walter Thornton-died Mary Thornton-Mother-now 92 lives in Barnolswick John Thornton -Eldest. lives in Hereford Wendy Edwards-lives in Prestwich Jackie Emerson-lives near Halifax Ray Thornton (self)lives in Cowling My Grandfather was a stone mason who lived in Earby and made the Coronation scroll on the library and the stone balls on the old police station. Thanks Ray |

| Comments: | I am the son of Bill and Dolly Fisher of the prefab at 75 Kenilworth Drive next door to the Blakeneys. My best friends was Jason Edwards (who I believe commited suicide)and Peter Sunderland (of the chip shop). In Earby during the 90's no one seemed to know why 'The Ranch'. The Ranch was the community centre on the estate. I saw my first fireworks there on VE (or VJ) night when there was a bonfire. Charlie Chaplin films were shown there too. I much preferred the Empire. Dad used to help Mr Taylor at the White Lion. Mom and I went into the back parlour after thepictures. Does anyone remember the 'magic dentist at Springfield Road? |

| Comments: | Hello there,
I have been reading this guestbook and Web site for some time and getting a great deal of pleasure and comfort from remembering old memories, and past good times. I was moved to actually write something when I read about what happened to the memorial flowers for Steve Marshall's Mum and Dad. I was so sad to read this happened Steve. I remember your parents a little, and was good friends with your sister Sandra for a couple of years when we were both at Barlick Modern. (Terrible school--bad, bad, teaching standards.) I do remember evenings playing Monoply at your house with your parents. I have a twin brother (Alan)who may also have come over to your house? (We were born in 1956.) Your Mum had such a warm and infectious laugh, and it was obvious your parents loved each other very deeply. I was very shocked to hear about their tragic motor cycle accident, at the time in 1974. I am sure you are right that they are still there in spirit--probably swearing at the nasty person(s) who took the flowers. My Dad remembers your family Steve. Didn't you have a younger brother? Unfortunately, my Mum Alice died just a year later in 1975, so that time period is a little bit of a blur for me. I do regularly go back and visit my Dad (George), who still lives at 4 Kenilworth with his "new" wife Margaret of the past twenty years, or so. I now live in California, but will never forget my Yorkshire/Lancashire roots. My older brother Terry (born in '46) lives in New Zealand, and my twin Alan is in Halifax, since recently moving from London and Leeds. Say hello to Sandra, and I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. It was interesting to read about the book by Dr Morrison's son, which Kathleen recently mentioned. I look forward to seeing the movie based on the book--I remember he was one of the few Doctor's who my Mum actually liked. (She couldn't stand Dr Love.) Apparently, Dr Morrison delivered Alan and I, while my Dad and my brother Terry were fishing down at the Leeds/Liverpool Canal. I think that's what father's did in those days, while mothers were at the hospital toiling away! I am planning to visit my Dad and Margaret in Earby in the next few months (Nov or Feb).... Anyway, I think that's enough blithering... All the best, Alison |

I left Earby in 1965 when I married my husband Peter, and I have two daughters and three grandchildren. Now enjoying retirement,we keep active by walking in the dales and looking after the garden. Would love to hear from old schoolfriends. |

| Comments: | For the past thirty three years without fail on the 28th August i have placed flowers at the bend on salterforth rd in memory of my parents who died at that spot in 1974 most older people from the ranch know this and respect the spot.
I was shocked this morning as i drove past to find the flowers had dissarpeared while i still beleive my parents are around in spirit i do not beleive they have any need for the flowers so naturally i do not think they took them what is the world coming to when memorial flowers are stolen |

| Comments: | To those who were in the discussion we had several years ago about Blake Morrison's book about his father, Dr. Morrison--a film has now been made of this starring Colin Firth as Blake and Jim Broadbent as Dr Morrison. I don't know if the title is the same (And when did you last see your father?)but presumably it is.
I will look out for this here in Ireland but if anyone hears whether this is a tv film or for general release I would be interested to hear. Greetings to anyone who remembers me, especially to Ken. |

| Comments: | Hi Ken,
What a grand site - I am so pleased I found it - you certainly have brought back a lot of happy memories - including 'seven bellies', penny lollies at Yates's, Kelbrook Youth Club, the Waterfalls, the 'Barlick Spud', fish and chips at Freddie Briggs's and Dixons Ice Cream Van - from Foulridge I remember, with a rather attractive blonde who sold the ice cream - ahh ... happy days, too many to mention here!! I didn't live on 'The Ranch', but a lot of my school (Spring Field and New Road) pals did. We came to live in Earby in 1955 - my dad was a Painter and Decorator and after retirement became a photographer. We lived above and behind the decorators shop on Colne Road, just over the railway crossing, near the Station Hotel, then up Rostle Top Road - I too remember Eddie Wood - and having an illeagal pint in his 'back room'! I left Earby in 1971 and I live in London now, although I have to be in Skipton on the 23rd Feb 2007, so I will be passing through Earby to visit my old friend Jack Heald at Sough along with Kathleen Bannister (Astin) at Kelbrook. By the way, I see that a Liz Merrit (Dean) has signed your guest book - I am sure that my dad photographed her as Earby May Queen in 1966 and that I may have the negative!! |

| Comments: | Can anyone else remember the night that the egg packing station burned down? I can't remember the year, but I think it was winter, and in the early hours of the morning. I remember being woken by the exploding eggs - they sounded like the crackle of rifle fire (although I've never heard the crackle of rifle fire - thank God)
We used to get not only cracked eggs, but other defective ones. (including large deformed "double-yokers"). I also remember those that didn't have a shell, they came in glutinous sacks of membrane and you could see inside them. Ughhh! They tasted all right, though. I can't imagine how they ever arrived on the production line! Maybe they thought that us ranchers would eat anything, and maybe they were right! Still, I suppose we were better off than the poor hens trapped in their deep litter houses, obliged to produce barren and futile babies one a day for life, because we knew even then that a hens life was limited to her fertility potential, because we killed her when her procreational abilities ceased. I remember having to wrestle with my conscience for many a day about this time, and I eventually became a vegetarian. The eggs were somehow checked with a little light, red if I remember rightly, and stamped, inconguously, with a little lion. I think they said about that time "Go to work on an egg", but I didn't - I couldn't get a job in Earby and left in 1967. Back to the egg packing station - it recoils back in my memory. What on earth caused the fire? I could never think what on earth there was in an egg packing station to burn so fiercely, probably only the egg trays, but I remember that the fire went on right merrily for many an hour. The charred remains seemed to remain on site for many months afterwards. The facility was a pre-fab construction, as I remember, the last one on the ranch, and no one ever attempted to rebuild the enterprise. Does anyone know who owned it, and why it was built on the ranch? What happened later to the site? Regards to all rancheros, everywhere Ken |
