Hi!
My name is Marcelo, I'm a comics fan from São Paulo, Brazil.
In the late 1990s, I get a complete set of the Famous Comic Book Creators cards collection, edited by Eclipse Comics and, since then, I'm trying to collect the autographs from these artists. Some of them I get personally (when the artists came to Brazil), others are bought at eBay:
- Will Eisner (who I met in Rio de Janeiro)
- Jim Starlin
- Joe Simon
- John Romita
- Martin Nodell (also deceased now)
- Dick Ayers
- Brent Anderson
- Marv Wolfman
- George Perez
- Sergio Aragonés
- Erik Larsen
- Trina Robbins
- Moebius
- Stan Sakai
- Julius Schwartz
- Todd McFarlane
- Charles Vess
- Timothy Truman
- Ron Frenz
- Marc Hempel
- Paul Mavrides
- Paul Gulacy
- Sam Kieth
- Beau Smith
- Gilbert Shelton
- Dan Spiegle
- Chuck Dixon
- Clive Barker and
- Roberta Gregory
Now I'm asking you to sign for me the card #77, dedicated to you. If you agree, please let me know if there is any charge, and to wich address I have to ship the card.
I apologize for my poor, poor English.

Long time no speak. Hope this missive finds you and your's well and that business is healthy. Think about you quite often, especially when ruminating on ZORRO. Was curious...you see any of Telemundo's ZORRO: The Sword And The Rose? If so, whad'ja think. I'm a ZORRO nut and a lover of well done "soap opera" and really enjoyed it, and of course I don't speak Spanish (You'd think after 37 yrs in So. Cal. I would) but I made DVDs of the series from our local Telemundo station (here in Medford, Oregon) and about half the time they remembered to activate the closed captioning in English. Probably a little late to say this, but I enjoyed the strip you did with Tom...both a couple of real talents, you guys. Oh well, don't want to blather on, so I'll close for now. Maybe we'll run into each other again at Comic Con one of these years. Take care and much success in all your endevors. What? Spelling errors? Everyone knows cartoonists can't spell. 'Til later, I remain,

Signing your Guestbook at this moment. I had just today spoken to Jim Warren of Warren Publishing, I had needed information on Billy Graham, and your name came up and Jim asked if you were still alive! Obviously I laughed, and he asked for me to send you a message: "Are you still alive? I'm taking you off my Christmas list, and you're a wonderful writer, but boring in conversation." Now, I do not know if he really meant that last part, but to me Don, in all of the interviews that I've read, you're not boring by a long shot! Keep on producing your stories. By the way, are we going to see any more Nathaniel Dusk or Detectives, Inc. and when are you gonna put out the Detectives, Inc. DVD?

Also, I'm researching information on Billy Graham for my book on African-American artists, and I would love to have your input or pass on my contact info to Billy. Please see below:

Thanks for the memories, and now I'll have to go back through my collection to read your other series again. Ah, the wonder and joy of comics. God help me, I still love 'em.

Comments: Dear Don,
My name is Dave Ryan and I am doing a
Massive Independent Crossover in the vein of Marvel's
"Civil War". I am doing this in response to a need to
showcase comics outside of Marvel and DC and would
love to have SABRE involved.

I did a creator owned book back in May/2000 called
Penance and did the Punisher back in 1985.
I am starting up self-publishing again on a new title
called "Red Anvil Presents" and issue 1 to 4 I'm doing
a Massive Independent Crossover. Nothing like this
has ever been done before on an independent scale and I know that SABRE is needed to be seen in this!

I love SABRE and would like to know if you would be interested in being included in such an endeavor?
I would be doing the penciling and most of the writing
with contribution from you concerning your property.
Please feel free to mull it over, but I would love to
have SABRE on board!

You're the independent idol for a
lot of these guys and it would mean a lot to me if you
said yes and a big boost of moral for everyone.
I am doing a massive "Civil War" character pin-up of
everyone involved. Check out my profile picture for the cover sketch for issue #1.
I would absolutely draw SABRE right in there!
There is no financial involvement on your end, just an
ok of story involvement.
I'm not having the characters fight against one
another.
They will be gathered by an alliance of good.
Sort of akin to the holy order in the movie Van
Helsing, to battle Cain. He is opening a rift in
dimensions to Hell/Chaos to destroy the Earth. The
order, which is a secret society, gathers these
"low-brow" heroes not to attract attention the
"mainstreamer" would get. There will be action with
comedy splashed in. Any involvement with SABRE (or suggestions) will be run by you
first
absolutely!!!!
I would be positively true to SABRE and his mythos!Any ideas you have would be met with open arms!
Sincerely,
Dave Ryan You can take a look at the cover sketch for
#1 as well as other art of mine at
http://www.myspace.com/davidwilliamryan.

I will be co-writing along with Richard Kane Ferguson
(Offerings, Magic the Gathering). I will be penciling
both series and Peter Palmiotti (Aquaman) will be
inking it. Below is a list of creators involved in the

Comments: Hello Mr. McGregor,

I am certain you get a thousand emails and messages a day so I will keep this brief. I have long since been a fan of your Zorro series with TOPP Comics, and was very enchanted by the characters and the world that you have crafted for them. Particulary, Zorro vs Dracula remains one of my favorites to this day.

Subsequently I found myself enjoying the spinoff series Lady Rawhide with equal enthusiasm. I was particularly pleased to see the events of the Zorro/Dracula cross over appear in the Lady Rawhide miniseries "Other People's Blood" however it appears the series was cancelled before conclusion.

I had only returned to comics and had successfully tracked down the "Other People's Blood" mini as well, but was left with a growing curiosity as to the outcome of that series. I know that it was many years ago that you wrote that particular series, and am uncertain if you even recall the series I am writing you about, but I have always been greatly fascinated with reading stories, particularly well written ones, to their completion.

If it is at all possible, and if you recall the story that I am referring to, I would be greatly appreciative to learn how the mini series was slated to conclude.

Thank you for taking the time to read my request.

I've actually only read the new Black Panther series so far, but in learning more about this important superhero I learned that you are a key author of this series and a lot of people respect your work. I've been trying to find older comics so far it has been hard, however I take the word of the majority of people on this, and I believe you must have influenced the new series as well.

The reason I am here today is to ask that you look at the enclosed website and consider endorsing it. I think the comic book world needs to be involved in this movement, if not endorsing it then debating it. Most of what I have learned about right and wrong I have learned from superheros in my youth, so I look to that now in these times.

Thank you,

I have read and collected just about all your Panther, Sabre, and Detectives Inc. work. The satisfaction they give continues even after so many years.

I read an interview with you in which you lamented the lack of aknowledgement, by the industry, of artist Billy Graham's contribution to the field; barely even a mention after his death. There are still scant details about his life, and only an approximate date for his death. Do you have any more specific information about Billy? I think he is due much more recognition than he has received. Anything you could provide will be appreciated.

Comments: Why kill Lady Rawhide? I was hoping if you can bring her back in a way as she was last seen in "Other people's blood" where she was about to be bitten by the female vampire name Carmelita, I mean the only way on how she can be saved during such a time is trough blood transfusion which was not available at those times, my idea brought forth the idea which is similar to that of the Terminator movie where a guy in the future came to rescue her and bring her to our present time where she got the proper means of getting the poison out of her sysytem and live to start another life where she would restart her career as a crime fighter, you can call it an idea of a story which you already made only with a little twist I came up with, well the story is more likely this: A guy who was facinated in the life story of Anita Santiago AKA Lady Rawhide learned about her demise in the past where she was bitten by the vampire Carmelita the guy from the future who is so very facinated with the story of Anita Santiago is inlove with her and taught of going back in time to save her from being bitten by the vampire Carmelita Rodrigues and being defeated by the female pirate Scarlet Fever and brought to our current time in the present because the ship she was in will be sank by the pirates, he knew that once he rescues her the idea of leaving her in the past would not be an good option any more due to the fact her life is no longer complete with the lost of her brother Ramon, so he took her along in our present time and that is when she restart her days as Lady Rawhide 2005, if you think my idea sucks or it is cool enough to be sold in a comic book store please leave a message for me at my email at: Outlaw1672@yahoo.com, thank you.

A eight year old boy is kidnapped by evil Werewolves who take him away on two dragons, one white, and one red to the British Isles. Upon getting there he puts up a very tough fight which ends with him sticking a sword in Modreds rear end, and bitting a Werewolf on his tail. Morgane Le Fey casts a sleep spell on him. Comments: Dear Don McGregor

We are currently working on a book of hitch-hiking anecdotes, views and observations written by contributors from all walks of life. This collection aims to document the varied experiences of hitch-hikers and those giving lifts in order that an exemplary record can be established for general publication.

It is clear that hitch-hiking enabled a great number of people, particularly young people, to travel great distances for free, expand their minds and interact with others before the advent of cheap air travel and mass tourism.

Moreover, given that transport issues are today of great importance, more public knowledge of this almost defunct activity may be illuminating and even inspiring. We have already received contributions from a diverse group of individuals including Arnold Wesker, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Steven Pinker, Alistair Campbell, Sir Max Hastings, Jeremy Vine, George Monbiot, Annie Nightingale, Nigel West, Will Durst and Lembit Opik MP, intent from Sir Alan Parker, Doug Stanhope, Tony Hawks, Peter Tatchell, Loudon Wainwright, David Nobbs, Michael Rosen, Jeffrey Lewis, Dave Douglass and Mike Leigh and significant interest from Country Joe MacDonald, Will Self, Bill Bryson and Noam Chomsky.

With all this in mind, we write to ask if you would consider freely contributing an anecdote or view, however long or short, for publication in due course. Should you choose to contribute, we will be in touch with you again to request your permission to use your piece. We will give every contributor a free copy of the book on publication.

Yours sincerely

Comments: Hi,

I recently picked up a copy of your "Zorro, the Dailys: Year One" and thoroughly enjoyed it. I see that, like the stories you did for Topps you did a few years ago, this series uses characters from the Disney TV series (Monastario and Sgt. Garcia.) I'm writing (revising actually) a timeline of Zorro's adventures and would be grateful for your thoughts on how your stories fit in with the chronology of the TV show.

I'd also be fascinated to learn more about "Zorro, Matanzas." The matanzas are featured as background in several of the Johnston McCulley stories but I suspect you will develop them in ways he never thought of. I hope i sees publication soon!

Comments: Don,

I recieved my autographed copy of "A Terror of Dying Dreams", as well as the bonus Zorro Ashcan, in the mail a few days back. After a few minutes of looking at what I had in my hands, I suddenly thought to myself "I had Don - Freakin - McGregor on the phone, and I didn't know it!". Ubeleivable!

Anyway, before I discuss my Christmas gift from my wife, I'd like to mention my first contact with your writing. It wasn't Killraven or Black Panther, it was Paladin. It was this nothing little issue of Marvel Premier that nobody talks about, but there were several lines in that comic, and the whole mood of the thing, that left an impression on me to this day. The world represented in that comic was the real world, almost. It wasn't the super-hero world that I, as a kid, was expecting. It seemed to me to be different than every other comic being published at the time, and i don't think you were even trying. Still, on the strength of the impression that issue gave me, I would years later seek out some of your material that never came across my radar the first time.

As far as "Terror", Bravo! Gene's art was like coming back to an old friend. The story was great. I enjoyed the Dierdre Stevens character, and the fact that she more than pulls her own weight. The lack of cliches in your writing creates a nice air of anticipation, because as I reader know you want follow some worn out, predictable approach.

In recent years there has been a lot of rhetoric about realism, but usually in the context of having an artist that paints from models. There is no greater dramatic realism that what you have done in your various projects. The Nathaniel Dusk series were a great example.

It feels kind of weird writing in this questbook form (I'd rather write a straight email), and I don't always trust these things to go through, so I'll stop here.

But thanks for the autographs, and the ashcan. I'll have to scan your gift shop before I leave to see what else I need...but hey, what do I need to do to see another Detectives Inc? I'll have to beat my friends over the head with your current work until they admit that comics without long underwear are worthwhile.

Happy New Year!

Now, I don't want to sound like an ass kisser or anything, but I'm wondering when is DC gonna put out the Nathaniel Dusk collection that you and Gene 'the dean' Colan did during the 80's? Your writing style is very simple yet compelling in that it keeps the reader interested as well as surprised in the appropriate areas. The dialogue is great, not made up or imagined vocabulary, but sounds like real human beings do in those neighborhoods and time eras. Sabre reminded me of an old movie serial which had every kind of genre in it. Detectives Inc. was just a good old crime stories.

Don keep up the great work.

Just discovered your website - as part of research for a memoir of sorts I'm working on. Anyway, this is just really to say that your gorgeous work on the Killraven series has never been forgotten. I particularly remember the last issue - "Mourning Prey" - beautifully lyrical. Also loved your Luke Cage stuff. Sadly, I no longer have any of the Kilraven comics - is there any chance of them being reissued in book form? Or you revisiting the character - I do recall the graphic novel with Craig Russell many years ago.

With very best wishes - Liam (Carson)

Just spent last night and this morning re-reading my old
copies of "Lovers Die At Dusk" and "Apple Peddlers Die At
Noon". I first read them as a teenager, and it was a
pleasure to come back and visit them again. The writing is
deceptively straightforward, but a close reading shows the
craft with which it was assembled.

I've always been a fan of detective noir, and have even been
known to write some of my own. It's a challenge to keep the
story honest without embellishing the form, and you did it
beautifully.

This is probably old news to you since the last one was
published 15 1/2 years ago, but I just thought you'd like to
know that someone was still reading it and enjoying it.

I love your Killraven and Black Panther stuff from the
seventies because they are poetic and human. So thanks for
that!!
I recently read Red Dust Legacy again (Amazing Adventures
36) and then a few days later came across a battered copy of
Gold Key's Edgar Rice Burroughs' John Carter of Mars which I
bought for a bargain couple of quid. I was struck by the
similar opening sequence where the hero at first finds
himself alone on the surface of Mars and then is met by 'a
strange advancing horde'. I wondered whether the parallel
had been intended as a homage to Burroughs work?
Is there any chance you will take Killraven to Mars again?
I'd love that!

noted the reference to Nathaniel Dusk, which I have re-read
many times with pleasure.

Oddly, as I uncrate boxes and boxes after our recent move, I
came across a book yesterday that I've had for years but had
not encountered on my shelves for a long time,
"Dragonflame". As the late Auric Goldfinger observed, three
encounters constitutes enemy action, so I figured I was
meant to scribble a note.

Best of luck to you. I, for one, would be pleased to see
Zorro in our local newspaper...there are all too few
continuity strips nowadays and I think the only real
continuity strip in the "Wis. State Journal" is Rex
Morgan--a poorly drawn thing, I feel, though I'm glad he
made an honest woman of his office nurse.

Hey Don!

Greetings from your long-time fan and two-time collaborator
Tom Ziuko! I just finished reading your oft-delayed
interview in Comic Book Artist and it brought on a rush of
great memories from our brief time working together on
Nathaniel Dusk. I've got to tell you, despite the
limitations of the printing at the time, that book and
working on it so closely with you remain one of the
highlights of my career. I can honestly say that I've never
worked with a writer as passionately involved and committed
to their vision as you are.
Certainly you're the only writer ever to trek all the way
out to MY APARTMENT in Brooklyn to discuss the coloring of a
project! Just one of the many things I love about you and
your work!

And speaking of Nathaniel Dusk, I also wanted to let you
know that I still include several pages of the original
coloring in my portfolio, and without fail every editor I
show them to consider them to be a highlight. And recently,
after nineteen years as a freelancer I took a staff position
at Neal Adams Continuity studio, where Cory Adams told me
that the first book she ever saved and collected was the
second Dusk series, thanks to Gene's pencil-art and my
coloring. Very flattering. And if I do say so myself,
without the lettering overlays the originals are quite
stunning. In fact, I still have the original boards from all
four issues, so let me know if you have any particular
favorite pages or scenes. My favorites are the sequence on
the fire escape with the flashing neon-light, driving by the
Flatiron Building, and the closing fire-works scene. Just
beautiful stuff by Gene, and I feel honored to have been
able to work with the both of you at least once in my
professional career.

Here's hoping you're able to get that collected black &
white Ragamuffins volume together. In fact, I'm here to
offer up my services gratis if you need the covers colored!
You may have seen some of my work over the last few years --
I color the front and back covers for the TwoMorrows
magazines: the Kirby Collector, CBA, and Alter Ego. And I'm
coloring on the computer now, so reproducing from Gene's
pencils should be no problem. Hell, even if I'm not
involved, I WANT TO SEE THAT BOOK PUBLISHED!!!

Well hey, it was a gas reading your interview and shaking
loose some cherished memories from the ol' belfry; I'd love
to hear from you if you're so inclined. Thanks again, man!

Comments: Don: I'm delighted to see your new column! Yes, I'm one of
those pesky fans who remembers your "Variable Syndrome"
non-fiction so well, and I've taken every opportunity to bug
you for more essays. I'm glad you've finally caved! Thoughts
on future topics: share some memories of the Black Panther,
Killraven, the development of Sabre & collaborating with
Billy Graham. YOU hang in there, Don! best, Tom

Comments: Okay McGregor, your life long friend, fan, sidekick (I got
the bruises to prove it), confidant, artist, stuntman,
actor, and daughter's godfather ... Whew! Has finally
dropped by and left his mark ... so-to-speak. Keep on
truckin', mi amigo! And happy trails.

Comments: Zorro was in a hurry, as he wanted to pursue the bandit
known as Three Finger Jack. He grabbed the first horse
available. A dark black steed that was tied to the water
stable. That horse was called Jazma. Jazma once owned by
Pancho Villa and....... Still trying to get a horse named
Jazma to ride with Zorro! (smile)

one, silly me! Anyway I've got the link on my page changed
so now it comes here!

Comments: Hey Don-- The new site looks great. I'm extremely bummed
that "Matanzas!" won't be coming out til next year, because
the story was really intriguing. I consoled myself with the
excellent "It Can't Happen Here" TPB. Dwayne McDuffie wrote
a glowing column about you at the psycomic.com website.
Check it out. He talks about what the Black Panther meant to
him as a child and the incredibly tight storytelling. I've
written to Marvel asking them to reprint "Panther's Rage"
and I urge others to do the same. --Rob Clough

Comments: Dear Don, Who'd a thunk that Don would have his own
website--heck, who'd of thought Don would ever figure out
how to turn on a computer--god knows he had enough of a hard
time with the copier machine at Topps! But seriously, it's
great to see that you ventured out on your own to keep the
dream of producing great comics alive and well! To this day
my fondest memories of working in comics were the time spent
with Don discussing the comic industry and the artform
itself. Don, I hope you keep plugging away for another 30
years or so--keep up the great work! Charlie "Sproing"

Comments: Don: Your new site is a gem. It's a pleasure to see you
staking out such a prime piece of cyber-real estate. I've
had the pleasure recently of re-reading some of your old
Black Panther comics -- the '70s and the '80s series. And
I've got to tell you: as happy as I was as a kid to read
these stories that made be THINK, I'm even more delighted as
an adult to see how well they still hold up. Thanks again
for all the years of entertainment. I've said it to you
privately, but I don't mind repeating publicly: when the
final history of comics is written, the Don McGregor chapter
can be titled quite succinctly "He Cared." best, Tom

The projects we have worked on together remain as some of my
fondest memories in my career. Your writing has made an
indelible imprint on my mind. Adrienne and I love you. Keep
up the great work! your friend forever, Gene
