Thank you so very much for this wonderful, and truly emotional site. I found it during my research for my family tree. I have been collecting family photos to post for the tree, and will be happy to share them with you.
My parents, both Maltese citizens, were young adults during WW11. They shared those experiences with me, and I feel as though I had lived through it myself. My father worked for the RAF, 24 hours on duty and 24 hours off. On his time off he was a tailor. The Maltese did their very best to live as normal as possible. This meant that they cared about their appearance. People learned to make quick clothing and shoes, as many were caught in the bomb blast which would tear the clothes off. They used any fabric they could find, including parachute silk! I would very much like to hear from citizens that worked for or anyone whose relatives worked for the RAF. Thank you again for keeping their memory alive, and honoring the Maltese people with this beautiful web site.

I knew nothing about Malta until a cousin in the U.K. told me she had recently visited the Island and commented on the terrible suffering of the people during WWII. It got me interested and I visited your site to read up about it. Thank you for making me see the people in a very new light and broadening my horizon.

Hello there, I found this site 'by accident'. My late Grandfather, William Lawrence Morgan (previously 2nd Worcesters 1925-31)settled in Malta & married a local girl, Carmella Frendo. He served as a Warrant Officer II in 'B' Company, 1st KOMR during the siege. Despite the grave situation & his own thoughts, he convinced his family that victory would come. My Mother, Kathleen was only 7 years old when the siege began & it left an indelible mark on her life. She told me how hungry she was, the terrifying scream of the Stukas, dead horses in the road. Then the joy of seeing the Spitfires, the 'blessed' OHIO, & waiting in line to look at the George Cross. I thank God that she & my loved ones survived. My Great Uncle, Francesco Frendo also served as a Sergeant with the KOMR. Thank you for remembering the many unsung heroes of Malta who faced everything & would not give way. Your site reflects great credit on you.

What a great site. My family was living in Malta during WWII and before. It is my understanding the the home of my great-great grandmother, Clotilde Mifsud, was destroyed, as so many were, during the bombings. My grandfather was a commander in the Royal Navy and stationed in the Mediterranean area. He and my grandmother met and were married in about 1937 in Malta. Thank you for all your hard work!

Hi - what a great find this site is. I am the grandson of Anthony Tabone who worked for Redifussion as a radio technician during the war, and since his passing, I have become even more interseted in what he and the people went through during this time. While this was a kind of local broad-casting service, he performed his work on the Ohio after she limped back into port after being hit and spent months away from his new bride to do other technical work for the military. There is so much information here that will keep me busy for a long time. As a keen military modeller, I would like to build the 3 Gladiators Faith, Hope and Charity as my grandfather often spoke of these aircraft. If you have any info on Redifussion then please let me know - best regards Michael.

Dear Sir
Very interested in your excellent site. I am currently in the process of organising a battle-field tour to the Islands, focussing on the the RAFs contribution to operations on Malta, between 1939-44. Do you have any contacts with persons able to act as an SME or POC. Our Tour aims to include visits to appropriate museums, historic locations (perhaps a look around the remaining ex RAF blgs at Luqa etc), proffessional analysis of the air ops conducted; for example Kieth Parks impact on the air defence of Malta as well as air ops in the context of the strategic dimension (Pedestal, Axis re-supply, Battlaxe, Husky etc) and of course a visit to the Commonwealth Air Forces Memorial, so we may pay our respects to our fallen comrades. We would love to get any firsthand accounts from people involved in air ops at the time, if there are any remaining veterans (either UK mil, Maltese auxileries). Do hope you can help. I am so glad that I have found this site. I am the grandson of Malta Veteran Pinu Caruana, Royal Malta Artillery. I live in Australia and am trying to ensure that our place in history is not forgotten. I am trying to write a book on the Malta Aces and also to track down the grave site of an Australian shot down over Takali. The young pilot was from Mildura in Victoria. I have photographed his memorial at the former Operational Training Unit in Mildura. Over the next day or so I will retrieve that photo and send it to you with his details.
Again many thanks. | |
