I was searching for ideas to revamp kitchen cupboards, painting/decorate over boring blush pink laminate. Your home and tips are great. Very inspirational - I've been thinking of re-doing my kitchen cabinets (my entire kitchen, actually) but the cost of a remodel stopped me dead in my tracks, especially with our current economy. I then considered painting my stock oak cabinets and updating my appliances instead and after seeing what you did with your kitchen, I'll probably take on this enormous task. My kitchen is pretty dark (not a lot of natural light) so I'd probably go with painting them white but I love the red and green combo you have. I still need to tackle the laundry room first but you've given me a lot of good ideas! You and your hubby-do are very talented!

Hello , Love your kitchen .Your kitchen is very much like mine.. I currently have the walls painted the red color.. would be afraid to paint the cupbrds :-) I have the standard island & ceiling I would love to replace. Your stove & cupbrds are set up like mine too. must have been a favorite way to do it for years. I have my family room where you have your dining area. but want to get that moved to teh lower level. we removed the carpet in my sewing/ craft room & painted the floor.. I love it too . Like you we are waiting to put down wood. My bil said we can take wood floor from an old house their taking down. ::-) lots of work but well worth the effort . LOVE the idea for the back splash .. looks beautiful . i have a faux f-place in my dining room.. maybe i should brick that in. currently it's covered with a large plant !LOL . I bought it for 35.00 last winter at the Salvation Army :-) The real f-place in the family room needs the tile updated .. what do you paint the tiles with ? I have wanted to do the curtains on the big doorway to the kitchen too. Thanks for refreshing the idea :_) I too love to redo & use old things in new ways.you are certainly an inspiration to us all! I think it's beautiful just the way it is.

I am wanting a change in my kitchen. My house is a 50 year old colonial, but small, only 2200 square feet, so I think of it as a cottage. Your kitchen is so beautiful and I go back to it often. I am thinking of trying to duplicate your red cabinets. I love red and at one time my living room was red, but after a year or so, I repainted it ivory tusk by Benjamin Moore. I am so much happier with this room light, but I do miss the red in my home. So when I came upon your kitchen, I was pleasantly surprised! I have white appliances and a white countertop and a creamy tile backsplash with a blue small accent on the tile. We have dark oak floors and I am thinking the red will look great. I will have to change the wall color, as that right now is a golden yellow custom glaze. I look forward to viewing all your progress as time passes! Good luck and thanks for the inspiration!

Would you believe a google search for a large glass bell jar to house my grandmother's 'Mr Individual' hat. Quite off target but so glad I stumbled onto your amazing site.

Truly inspirational! I have been searching for a home to buy for 18 months and because of the ridiculously outrageous housing prices in Sydney, our options are now down to buying something that needs total renovation in order to stay in the area that I grew up in. I was researching where I could buy Carl Larsson prints as I want to frame and hang some in a guest room. I have one that I brought home from Sweden several years ago, but one isn't enough. I love his work for most of the same reasons you seem to.

I actually can't quite remember, but I think I was googling house blogs and found this site.

I love it as it is. More pictures around the house, of course, would always be welcome along with how-to pictures (taken while you are doing a project) of say how you antiqued the cupboards.

I love, love, love the beadboard ceiling. We have plans to do the same thing in our family room. I always thought is would be a good way to cover a popcorn ceiling. I think your house looks so warm and cozy. I like the colours you have chosen and especially am impressed with the red cupboards in the kitchen. Have you ever considered painting the base of your dining room table black as I could see that might work better when you have the hardwood floors down - the white may make it look like it is floating. Just a thought but you seem to know what you are doing. cheers.

typed in red cabinets. I have the doors pulled off my bottom cabinets and half of them painted "cabin red". I love it, but my husband thinks I am crazy. I am going to show him your completed cabinets. I am going to put the metal ceiling tiles in as the backsplash. I love your finished kitchen and it makes me feel a little saner.

My husband and I are rebuilding a lake house that we lost to fire. It is amazing how many of same ideas we share with you. Using brick pavers as a kitchen back splash is one of them. I linked from HGTV message boards. I love this blog and also what you have accomplished in your home. I too am struggling to update a 1970s one story home. Most of my rooms have 8 foot ceilings, and I find this very limiting. I would love to exchange tips on working to update this style of home.

Any tips for working with eight foot ceilings in a long room? I have a living room that is 32 1/2 by approx 16 1/2 but it has 8 foot ceilings. I have considered raising them but everyone who looks at the structure and what would be involved tells me this would be a nightmare. When I redid my kitchen, which also has 8 foot ceilings, I painted the ceilings with high gloss paint tinted with 1/2 the intensity of the trim. It does visually fool the eye and make the ceilings almost disappear, but would it be overwhelming in my long low living room?

I just love your l906 magazine ads. I have several Ladies Home Journal and Vogue from the twenties, and some from the 40's and I never tire of looking at them. I have framed several, especially the kitchen ads and the furcoat ladies in Vogue. They are so stunning. I love architectural salvage and trash to treasure and make alot of things. looking for Cottage decorating ideas..in the process of purchasing a 2nd vacation/retirement home in a coastal community that is very rural. The real estate agent describes it as "cozy cottage"... Built in 1940's and renovated several times.. Is in good shape although missing the cottage look entirely! I have enjoyed your capers so much. My favorite is the 'redesign' of the demolished bathroom to accomodate your arriving guests. Very creative! For many years I have tearing, rebuilding, painting, paneling,tiling, etc. I am an interior designer by profession and it is a delight to see how much you enjoy the process. I love your brick backsplash. If you are interested in distressing and want to avoid the hassle of stripping some portions of it, try Ready Strip. I just tore out the tiles in my backsplash and I am doing beadboard with a cap of beautiful charcoal grey 8" tiles. Happy tearing and remodeling!!
