Comments:Dear Ms. Wilhelm,
I have recently finished my first novel, although I've been writing for abou 40 years. It's set in Portland, and I'm amazed how well the book came out (as in, did I really write this?). Even my husband is impressed, and he's my toughest critic, besides me, of course.
I live near Marcola, just outside of Eugene, and when I told my friends I'd finished my book, they suggested I try to contact you to ask if you could give me any help or suggestions. Thank You! Tracy O'Sullivan

Totally enjoy your work and grasp of the fine points of law and courtroom.
Next time you have a public signing, I would like to attend and meet you.

Comments:I love the Barbara Holloway series but I was very disturbed by the most recent book I read which discussed Darren and his "interns". I am a physical therapist and have been practicing for 19 years. At no time in my memory were physical therapists trained and "certified" by other physical therapists on the job. Over the past 20 years I've seen the profession progress from a Bachelor's to Doctorate degree level. I can't remember when a student could study some 'pre-med' and then receive a "certification". PTs now spend six to seven years in college and graduate with doctorate degrees. The licensure exam is rigorous. I wish you had done your homework because that last book left a sour taste in my mouth.

Comments:I have thoroughly enjoyed discovering, then reading through, first the Barbara Holloway series, then the Meiklejohn/Leidl series. However, with respect to some of the latter, I have to comment that I am not keen on scifi as a genre. As an attorney, I particularly relished Holloway's keen sensitivity, believing that too many trial attorneys abound in ego and lack in the ability to watch, listen and perceive. I sure hope you add to her anthology!

Comments:Hi, Kate Wilhelm.

I recently discovered your Barbara Holloway novels and read them all in a matter of weeks. I loved the detective work and courtroom scenes. For whole hours at a time my personal troubles melted away. The characters became familiar old friends, making the novels a comforting retreat. I enjoyed Barbara's companionable yet not unconflicted relationship with her father. Barbara's struggle for justice in a skewed system, her dedicated and virtually superhuman hard work, her brilliance, and her soul-searching in work and in love made her complex and human and inspirational. Thank you for these novels.

I also thought it interesting you used one of the lawyers in A Wongful Death to have the name of Robert Crais. I am also a fan of his mysteries. On the back of Cold Case it said, "you were writing a new novel." Is it out yet?

Comments:Hello Cousin Kate,

No, I'm not being overly familiar, or kidding either.Quite the opposite, actually.

Your mother was my Great-Aunt Anne, and because I liked her so much, I put a picture of her, with Uncle Jesse, in a collage (of our shared Stuteville/Meredith ancestors) in my room. It suddenly came to me that you might like to have a copy of this picture, too. I'll have to ask my mom for the original to get a decent copy, and I'll try to nail down when it was taken. From their clothing and hair, I'm guessing the 30's would be about right. Jesse, was my maternal granny's rowdy little brother, and he looks the part, but Aunt Anne looks pretty much like a much younger version of herself as I knew her. She was one of my all-time favorite relatives, because she let us slide down her (carpeted) stairs on our bellies every time we went to her house. I remember the first time I could appreciate that all the screaming and laughing and pounding the stairwell took, didn't set her back a bit. She was cool, before I knew what cool was. If you are anything like either of them, I'm sorry I never knew you. I suppose you might like a picture of your grandmother Meredith too, (you look more like a Meredith than I do). Yikes, didn't mean to send you a manuscript. Thanks for your time. Let me know if there is a better email address to use. Sue

You will be the first author that I have signed a guestbook for and will be able to tell them how much I enjoy their books. I started with Desperate Measures and was so hooked that I've read all of your Barbara Holloway novels (can't find Cold Case!) One of the things that make reading your novels so personal and enyoyable is being able to visiualize the area you are talking about. I live in Idaho but have lived in Oregon also.

One more thing I would like to say is your books, especially the Holloway books, make me hungry just reading about what her father, Frank, or some of the other characters are cooking for her!

Best regards to a wonderful person for sharing such talent with people.

Comments:I live in England now, but am a born and bred Oregonian, having lived on Mt. Hood and in Springfield. Most of the places Ms. Wilhelm refers to are places I know, including a description of one apartment complex where my oldest daughter once lived!

I have been listening to the Barbara Holloway series via audio books I download from the Clackamas County library and play while I work out or garden; once I start, I can't seem to stop!

I echo someone's comment about the narrators not getting NW names right; it does grate a bit. Anna Fields is my favorite, though they are all good. I have never listened to an audio book before, and was not sure how I would like them, but I enjoy them very much.

My husband and I travel the world extensively for work, and the next long trip to the US in a few weeks will be designated to introduce him to Barbara Holloway so he knows what I makes me zone out with a book on tape - he says I'm like a teenager, with headphones on, completely transfixed. He's British, but knows the area quite well, too, and I'm sure he'll enjoy them as much as I have, and I can't wait to tease him the way he's teased me!

I can only hope to one day meet Kate Wilhelm; like many others, I feel as if I know her, just from reading her work. I have listened to all the Barbara Holloway books, and am now moving on to others. I hope they are all on tape, as it suits my current lifestyle.

Thank you, Ms. Wilhelm, for allowing your books to be made available via library download. I would never have learned about your books otherwise. You are a fanastic writer and I find it delightful to hear stories about my 'heart home', Eugene/Springfield, which I miss so desperately!

It is so fresh and each story so new. I am 80, born in '29, lost my husband in 2002- retired elementary principal. We have raised three sons and I have always lived in Coos County - went to the U. of O. and taught remedial subjects in the elementary cb schools for seven years, then retired to raise our three, went back but over to the Com.
College and taught in aBE-GED-ESl at the non-reader to 4th g. level. That was so rewarding, also. I still am amazed at how you weave your stories.
I find I would rather read your books that just about anything. I do hope you are in good health and I am sorry you lost your husband, too.

Unfortunately, she is also a member of the Author's Guild, the organization which is trying to ban the sale of used books, and also wants to ban the text-to-speech feature of the Amazon Kindle, in both cases claiming that these are "copyright" violations. If they have their way, it will be illegal for you to read a book out loud.

This deplorable and offensive policy disgusts me. I will not purchase any author's books who is a member of this guild, unless they publicly declare that they do NOT support this effort.

Her Barbara Holloway mysteries draw me to a beautiful part of the world I have travelled in (I have a friend in Hood River) where the sense of place is every bit a character in these stories. Death Qualified is one of the books I re-visit.

The Holloway stories are special since I lived in Portland for 60-some years before moving to Sutter Creek, CA seven years ago, so I'm familiar with many of the places you write about. Needless to say, I'm now (im)patiently waiting for you next book. Best wishes to you and yours.

Outside of my late mother, my wife, daughter and granddaughter, I consider you and Annie Dillaird two of the most influencial women in my life. Something about your work transcends itself, or at least affects me on a level I still do not fully understand. I intend to keep reading you both 'til I get it right. I know, probably not really possible ...

Comments:I just recently found your works through our library's audio book site. I have listened to every single one of your Barbara Holloway series and still yearn for more. It is not often I find an author to keep me so engrossed!

I have a small suggestion. Blackstone audio books employs talented readers, but many have never lived in the NW. Perhaps you could give them a few hints on correct pronouncation of some of the NW area. ex: Willamette, Spokane and Siskiyou

If you gave them a bit of a hint such as Wil lam et, Spo can and Sis cue they wouldn't say Will a met, Spo cane and Sissy cue.

I just finished Skeltons today. I couldn't turn it off. A real audio "page turner". Thank you for all your efforts. You are truly talented.

I am on my second one (Desperate Measures) and enjoying it thoroughly. What surprised me what the making fun of Barbara Walters...her having an odd lisp is not her fault, anymore than my nephews cerebral palsey. I am game for funning, and having odd characters in books, but I would not make fun of your character Alex-his situation is not under his control. Thanks for writing your books, and thanks for reading this. Aloha, Nicole

Comments:I've just finished "Sleight Of Hand". As usual with your novels it will stick with me for a long time. This is the second reading and I rediscovered the central theme of the whole book "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. All else is commentary." I live at a Zen Center in North Carolina. Suffering, as you probably know, is the first noble truth in Buddhism. For some reason the two phrases connect in my mind. For this I thank you. Brad

BOOKLOVERS CONVENTION
April 22-26, 2009
Orlando, Fla.
Wyndham-Orlando Resort

Dear Ms. Wilhelm,

We have selected the winners for our 2008 Career Achievement Awards and you have won for your body of work creating outstanding Mystery Series for the Barbara Holloway series.

A heartfelt congratulations from Romantic Times BOOKreviews and all of our reviewers. All the winners will be announced in our June issue of Romantic Times BOOKreviews magazine #304.

Our Awards Ceremony will be held in Orlando, Friday, April 24, 2009 and I would like to know if you will be attending so that we can include you in the Awards Program and Awards Power Point Presentation which we are currently working on. Also, unfortunately because of time constraints, if you do NOT attend you will not be able to have someone accept the award on your behalf. This is a policy we have implemented a few years back and will continue. However, your name will be in the June issue as an Award Winner and will also appear on our website awards' archives as a 2008 winner.

• If you wish to attend the Awards Reception ONLY there is no cost to you (except your hotel room if you are staying overnight).

• If you want to attend the entire convention (five-day event) the registration fee is $490 which includes all the workshops, meal functions, parties, events and participating at the Book Fair.

• If you would like to attend the Awards Ceremony and also be a part of the autographing at the Book Fair on Saturday, April 25 the cost is $225 for the table. Also, if YOU WANT TO be a part of the Book Fair, you MUST contact our convention director, Jo Carol Jones ( JoCarol@RTConvention.com ), ASAP because she is in the process of ordering the books for the event and she will need to know which titles you want at your table. Barnes and Noble is facilitating the Book Fair and will not accept orders beyond the deadline which is fast approaching.

If you are planning on attending our convention to accept your award in person please contact me ASAP in a reply to this email so that I can include you in the program and the power point presentation.

We are expecting over 1000 attendees this year and 1000-2000 locals to come out to meet the authors at the Book Fair, which will be heavily promoted in Orlando and vicinity and I sincerely hope you will be able to join us.

The winners’ names will not be made public until the June issue but feel free to celebrate with close friends and family. We just don’t want it to be posted anywhere until the June issue hits bookstores end of April.

Congratulations again and I look forward to hearing from you.
