| Query: | In the book "Ferryboats on the Columbia River by Robert H. Ruby and John A. Brown, page 106, there is an article about the Moses Coulee Ferry. In 1889, Gus Riddle, operating the ferry, was confronted by one Mr. Peterson who owed him some money. Seeking to cross the river, Peterson engaged Riddle in an argument in which he shot the ferry operator, who soon died in Ellensburg.

I was recently poring over the 1887-9 census and copying down the names of African-Americans for a research project I'm currently working on. I know these early records are a far cry from error-free, but I couldn't help but notice that there are three interracial married couples listed among the black families who arrived in Roslyn in 1888. They are: Lewis and Jennie Bolles, Charles and Hattie Wesley, and Henry and Margaret Cousins. The Cousins are both listed as hailing from Ohio, Lewis Bolles is from Virginia, Jennie from Indiana, and of the Wesley's, Charles is from Illinois and Hattie from Iowa. In all three cases, the man is listed as black, the woman as white, (Wesley Charles was listed as mulatto.)Also, Lewis and Jennie Bolles are listed as having a 6 year-old mulatto daughter. Needless to say, this would have been considered extremely risque in 1888. I'm just wanting to know if anyone has any information on these people. P.S. I'd come straight to you on this one Mr Wagy, but I don't want to become a pest. |

| Query: | Looking for records and information the Constantine and Lund families from about 1888 to 1930. Harry and Petra were married in Cle Elum in 1898. Harry owned a restaurant as early as 1911 in Toppenish. Another Constantine (Phillip) owned a restaurant in Yakima, called the Gem, at 13 1/2 E. Yakima Ave. Where did Harry go? He seems to have disappeared 1915/1916. The 1920 Census indicates Petra, his wife, was a widow and had been for over two years. Harry came to the United States in 1888. Harry's absence in the 1900 Census is also noted as Petra and daughter Thelma are living with Petra's uncle Thomas Lund. There was also a John Constantine present in Yakima in the early part of the century. John was born July 4, 1890 in Greece. His parents were Gus Constantine and Alfenda both born in Greece. I don't know if this fits together or not. He died September 10, 1929 and is buried in the Tahoma Cemetery. The Yakima Valley Genealogical Society also has a cemetery record for C. Constantine in Tahoma Cemetery with note to see Damascos.
I have see reference to a death record for Harry and Cle Elum but have not seen record to verify. Any information on Harry and how this all fits together would be deeply appreciated, as I have been stuck at this point for about 5 years. |
