I ask you to read this letter till the end! Don't treat to my words with indifferens. On Your understanding it will depend my fate and the fate of my child. | Comments: | Valuable site. Enjoyed the Tunisian articles (the Sephardim are "correct" of course ;] ). The military connection is valuable since more Jews are serving (in the US military). My Own Meals one of two companies making long-shelf-life means (LaBriute being the other). MOM's have a pretty good taste reputation. Only concern revolves around the advertisment for conversions. Beware that only Orthodox (Sephardi or Ashkenazi) are acceptable by Israeli rabbinute - make certain Av Bet Din and all members are Shomer Shabat/Mitzvoth _=and= recognized by Israeli rabbinute. This is NOT to imply the advertisement is not valid or the conversions acceptable. Don't know. |

i wished you could had talk more about tunisia , its values , how it's different from other arab and muslim countries and the fact that tunsian jews totally blended in the their society . so lets us keep our jews home where they belong shalom |

| Comments: | I feel proud now to be descended from that remnant of Jews
that remained in Babylonia for over 2,700 years ago. We were the first Jews To be dispersed from Israel. Our crowning glory was the compilation of the Babylonian Talmud which was completed from 200 to 500 CE. There is an absolutely fabulous museum called the Babylonian Heritage Center in Israel dedicated to preserving the traditions and customs of this ancient Jewish community. A replica of the Great Synagogue of Baghdad can be seen there. In addition a replica of the Jewish Quarter of Baghdad has been created complete with a Jewish alley way where vendors selling spices, materials and other craftsmen can be seen. A beautiful collection of ritual objects can also be viewed. It is located in Or Yehuda which is north of Tel Aviv. It contains a library and acts also as a research institution. Growing up in America, where the majority of Jews are of European or Askenzic ancestry, was somewhat difficult for me. Initially I did not feel part of American Jewry even though I was the first to be born in America in my family. Somehow I didn't belong -my parents did not make stuffed cabbage or potato kugel or speak yiddish like my friends' families. Our name was different not ending in a Stein or Sky. None of my family experienced losing relatives in the Holocaust like my friends. My parents spoke Judeo-Arabic dialect at home. The Jews I knew where fair skinned. I wished to be light like them. Somehow I felt inferior-a minority within a minority. After I had a family of my own, I did not want them to feel what I did growing up. I have researched my roots and feel very proud of my ancestors. Diversity is something that should not be avoided. We as Jews can come from different parts of the world and have different customs , but we are all ONE people-Klal Yisrael. |

They are intended for artists to paint on, but I left mine plain white. | Comments: | How to make a Matzah Cover for Passover: take four of those cloth table napkins that have a decorative border with tiny holes, and run colored thread through the holes, to attach them all to each other. You can write Matzah on the top napkin, either in English, or by tracing the three Hebrew letters using a child's Alef-Bet plastic tracer (available at a Judaica store). Then, you can fill the letters in with colored acylic paint (if there is no time to embroider before Passover). Each of the three Matzah pieces has its own pocket inside. You could make a matching Afikomen cover. Pre-wash everything before you start. Love to all. |

| Comments: | A good source for clear, simple Judaica designs is children's coloring books with Jewish themes. The children's section of a Judaica store is a good source of craft materials and Jewish imagery. The toys used for teaching the Alef Bet, the Hebrew alphabet, are useful for tracing, and stamp-printing, these letters onto fabric, paper or wet ceramic clay. It is cool to make an Alef Bet alphabet sampler, satin stitch on a pre-hemmed, pre-washed cotton table napkin, just trace the letters from a child's plastic template you get from a Judaica store. It is cool to design and embroider a Challah Cover the same way, just write "Shabbat", only three Hebrew letters, and decorate it your way. Always pre-wash your fabric. Make a Mizrah. |

| Comments: | While doing research on the ways Jews celebrate Shabbat around the world I came across Kolot's website. Incidentally, my synagogue's a cappella group's name is Kolot B'yar. I must say that i am very impressed with your website. I was wondering if you could help me with my research for a program that I am in the midst of creating for my Synagogue: Shabbat Around the World. Once a month we will use the nusach of a particular country during Shabbat morning services. The Cantor will explain the differences between our tradition and that of the country we will be celebrating that morning. After services, we will partake in a kiddush lunch where dishes from that country will be served and congragants natives to that region will explain how they celebrated shabbat in their home. We will start on November 9, 2003 with Germany because that date does not only fall on Shabbat but also coincides with the Anniversary of Kristall Nacht, the night of the broken glasses, the beginning of the extermination of the jews in Europe during WW II. Next we have scheduled (for this year) India, Iran, Hungary, Greece, Spain, and Turkey. Any one reading this from around the world, could you send me, please, a paragraph or two on how you celebrate Shabbat in your country and what are the traditional dishes served for that day. I would be most grateful. My e-mail address is: Annyko@aol.com In the subject field just write Shabbat Around The World.
Thank you in advance, Anny |

In regard to your entry: I often receive requests from people to help in choosing a Hebrew name, but because the issue is so personal, as a matter of policy, I do not make any recommendations for names. I would recommend you speak to your rabbi, or refer to a book of Jewish names. Best of luck. |

I originally thought of Herschel, but its meaning is "deer" which didn't suit. If I have a baby son, I would call him Yehuda, but I know he probably would get in trouble in my country if he bore that name. Could you suggest a name that is the epitome of wise, and resourceful?

| Comments: | I read with interest your article on Tunisia's citizens of jewish faith. I enjoyed it and found it informative and well written. I lived near the jewish quarter (the "hara') of Gafsa in the southwest of the country; in Houmt Souk by HaraSghira on the island of Jerba, in the southeast of Tunisia; and until 1969, in Tunis near the Hafsia, the main working-class jewish neighbourhood, and I had many friends who went to temples with their parents on Saturdays and I swiched off the lights for many of their families on Friday nights before they went to bed.
I find it a sad ashkenazi patronizing way of thinking to read the question "Should Tunisia's jews leave Tunisia?". The contribution of Tunisians of the jewish faith to the history and to present day Tunisia is immeasurable: they fought side by side with non-jews for independence from France, assumed cabinet posts in administrations, positions of leadership in Trades and Unions, many were stars on soccer teams and in boxing rings. Most popular of all some of the best known Tunisian singers and composers are Jewish: Habiba Messica, Cheikh Afreet, Raoul Journo just to name a few. It will serve western "intellectual" jews well to read the writings of the contemporary Tunisian philosopher Albert Memmi: a brilliant Tunisian patriot, a jew, .. and a mighty thinker. Should Tunisian Jews leave Tunisia? Well, should Tunisian Moslems leave Tunisia? Many did. Many do. Many will. Should the Navajos leave America? Should the Maurys leave New Zeland? Tunisia has been home for jews long before the country was Arabized in the early part of the 8th century (C.A.) A substantial influx of Safardim followed the Inquisition by the Christians in Spain. Large numbers of European Jews escaped after various "pogrums". The answer is obvious: Tunisia has many citizens of the jewish faith. They are neither American nor Israeli citizens. They are Tunisian. They have no split allegiance to any foreign power nor potentate. They are in Tunisia because they are an integral part of Tunisia's indigenous population. The ones I know are happy. Many who immigrated are homesick and go back to visit every chance they get. I am happy you visited Tunisia, and glad you wrote. Best wishes. |

What an interesting find on the web (had no idea any Jews lived anywhere near Tunisia). A Muslim woman I know from the web assured me that Jews live in Saudi (she's there), though everything I've read says otherwise...so who knows. As a Jew who grew up in rural Mississippi during the sixties, I'm well-aware of different types of oppression and societal demands placed on Jews in "minority lands". I salute these Jews and would love to visit them one day. Shalom, Rick London Londons Times Cartoons http://www.londonstimes.com londonstimes@cablelynx.com |

I tremendosly enjoyed my time with them and wish that I now knew where they were. When we would make trips to the field, we would always have plenty of Jewish rations to hand out to those who desired them. The Rabbi and Stuart always made sure we had a good supply on hand. I don't know where they are now, but for the work they did there, I know that God is watching over them. |

| Comments: | Great web site. As someone who visited Djerba and the Jewish
community of Tunis, I can attest to their tremendous hospitality, reverence to Hashem and stedfastness to their traditions. |

| Comments: | I always like a direct approach! My sister once gave me
that advice in writing. I like the new Kolot.com design. So easy to find new information on your suggestions for entertaining for the latest holiday! You are the Martha Stewart of Judaica! |

| Comments: | Hey, what's with the new design? I can see the motivation
behind the new layout (more info at a glance), but I miss the uncluttered character of your elegant classical-modernist design. (After all, isn't negative space is the greater part of valor?) Anyway, any plans to add bulletin boards to the kolot site? I think this would work especially well with the book review section. I just read Primo Levi's "If Not Now, When?"- an historical fiction narrative of a motley crew of Jewish partisans making its way across Europe, sabotaging the periphery of the German line as they make their way toward a geographic and internal Palestine. I'd be interested in reading a kolot review of this book and partaking in a dialogue with other "voices" in deconstructing this literary effort. |

| Comments: | Great start at content. Favorite screen was the "Passover
with Elijah" segment. Probably because I can relate to Seders that seem to go to all hours of the night. One piece of constructive criticism - the flavor you convey for American Judaism seems to be a bit negative ("My Tunisian Aliyah: They Should Leave?"). Although the stories that can be told by Jewish people from more remote parts of the world may be very rich in tradition or rituals, for those that have only experienced American Judaism (some of your readers), they probably believe their traditions are also deep-rooted, quite meaningful, and not necessarily "lost or neutered." Just a thought. |
