FRIDAY SEPT.16 possible MANTA DIVE from shore @ Keauhou bay. This dive will depend on two factors so check back here between noon & 3pm today. One factor will be determined at the site tonight. We will go on to the deck of the hotel manta observation area to see if any mantas are there. If we see any mantas, we'll dive it from shore. The other factor is a time constraint that will not be ironed out until later today so check back later between noon & 3pm. Further details will follow.

CLUB DIVE THURS. JULY 28, 9am "THE TUBE"

At the end of the road, behind the offices at the natural energy
lab(OTEC), there is an old open water inlet tube, about 8' in diameter
that may be penetrated. Its' shallow end depth is about 50' or 60' and
you can descend into it to a depth of about 85 feet where it is
blocked and you have to turn around and come back out. Many people an
be in there at once. It's big. Bring a FLASHLIGHT if you want to
explore for creatures inside. "THE PIPE" can be seen from the
shallower depth of the reef at 30', so if you want, you can stop
there. This dive can be whatever depth you choose. This dive can
definitely be a two tanker so we suggest you bring some snacks or a
lunch. Take the natural energy lab makai and then turning north, all
the way to the end. You will see the offices right in front of you.
Take the gravel road on the left and head out around the point to the
end where it is closed and a parking area exists(site actually sits
BEHIND those offices you see at the end of the road).

Comments:RSVP necessary! Tomorrow, June 30 @ 9pm we will be diving "the pipe" at OTEC. "The pipe" is one of the old, unused water inlet pipes of OTEC that is about 8ft diameter, open to go through @ about a depth of 70ft, going to about a depth of 100ft, where it is blocked off and you need to turn around to exit again @ 70ft. Through the years we've run into everything here, even whales during the season. If you don't want to make it a deep dive, you dont have to. You can usually see "the pipe" entrance from a reef bottom depth of 40ft. RSVP necessary @ 325-2505. Stay tuned for a July dive to be posted.

Comments:Sunday Dive Moved to Honaunau

Hi, Everyone,

Well, I’m looking at the ocean as I write this, and it’s not quite diveable. It’s supposed to get a little flatter tonight, but by 6:00 a.m. the surf will start to build for a big swell on Tuesday. Also, my guess is that during the short lull in the swell, the water will not have a chance to clear.

Therefore we will meet at 9:00 at Honaunau and try to get our usual table. Many of us feel that this is not the place for a BBQ, so we will not cook the meat. Bring your picnic and maybe something to share.

Comments:O.K.... a late, last minute post as usual. Our 4th of July dive will be in front of Pu' uhonua o Honaunau National Park Sunday @ 9am. We'll hope for some hammerheads that we got some pictures of last time! We'll bring charcoals for a lunch time barbecue. You bring what you want to put on the coals and drink or share. As usual, we'll bring two tanks and see if we feel like for the second tank. See you there!

Comments:At last Sunday's dive the consensus for this Sunday was to dive Pebble Beach. We will meet at 9:30 in the parking lot on "M" street. Go down the hill on Kaohe Street and turn left on the last street before the water. After the dive. we will BBQ at our house on Fern Road. As you come back up the hill, turn left on Fern.
The club will furnish the meat. You bring drinks and something to share. We have a few chairs and Ace might bring some club chairs, but just in case, bring folding chairs if you have them.

Comments:The Easter Bunny has rented one of those small pony tanks from Big Island Divers and it is rumored that she will be hiding more than just hard boiled eggs in the water at Pu' uhonua o Honaunau National Park Saturday night. This is the park across from "Two Step." Some of our "leaders" heard this information and decided to do a dive and barbecue on Sunday starting at 8:30am. You are all invited to hunt for the booty and share as comrades afterwards. Underwater flashlights and a goody bag recommended for the dive. Charcoals will be provided at the park, you provide your eats and drinks! If there are any last minute changes they will be posted here by 6:30am Sunday morning.

Comments:O.K.... Allen & I went to scout out Kukio for tomorrow and the surf was pumping too hard. We want a nice water for everybody so we're changing to the north side of Kailua pier, King Kamehameha Beach Hotel. Drop off your gear at the pier gate and some one will watch it for you. Go park in the public parking lot in Kailua town and walk to the pier in your wetsuit. I checked the site today and it was flat. Hopefully we'll still hear whales. Just like any other site you never know what you'll run in to. I've seen a lot of stuff here including mantas. Same time, 9am at the pier. Showers and bathroom. If you don't have fun tomorrow, then you didn't go on the dive!

Comments:We have seen them offshore every time of the last 11 times we've been there..... WHALES! Now, this coming Sat. the 20th, let's go listen to all of them. Symphony of Whales Dive this Sat. at 9am. Where is this magical place? Kukio Resort area, beach entrance. It is the first resort entrance past the airport just before Four Season's and Kona Village(Kaupulehu). Go to the gate and get one of the thirty beach passes. It's a walk from the parking lot, maybe a 100 yard paved path. We usually load up our gear on to an older type luggage carrier. You know, those two wheeled things that people used to put their suitcases on for airport traveling. Showers, bathrooms, shade, and a sandy beach entrance. Previous dives have produced whale songs, various nudibranchs, frogfish, sharks, turtles, sponge crab, lobsters, eagle rays, pom pom crabs, horned helmet shells and that's all I can vividly remember at the moment. We already have seven committed divers, so get your parking space early and DIVE! Dive leader will be Jon Hopcia. 808-325-2505

Comments:If anyone other than me is interested, we can watch this dive from shore on Sunday, Nov. 16th at 9:45ishAM..... to see how we can do it as a shore dive from behind Huggos..............."The Predator is an intact amphibious landing craft, think of it as a giant shoe box, the bottom is 90 ft and top is 80 ft. It is all open with the only enclosed area is the engine room, all accessible. It sits in a sand bed with various wreckage around it and we had a white tip visit the site while we were on the sub. There are large groups of goatfish living there and three cleaning stations defined. The Atlantis sub will be down there at about 10:20 so we could have a nice sub 'photo op' if that would interest anyone."

Comments:Hi Everyone,

My partner and I will be visiting the Big Island from Oregon in mid-August. I'm a friend of Paul C. from the Kona Reefers and since he won't be around when we visit he suggested I use this board to find buddies. I plan on diving Honaunau on August 10th (hopefully the crack and two-step). On the 12th I'm going to dive Puako. Finally, on the 18th I plan to dive somewhere around Kailua (maybe the old airport, mile marker 4 or even Ke'ei). I'm an experienced diver with rescue certification and over 40 dives logged. E-mail me if you are interested in joining me on any of these days.

Aloha,

Casey

Comments:Wave models show a pretty nice weekend for diving so we're heading to SOUTH POINT! If we can't get in there, it's back to Miloli'I. One of them is going to work. We usually get the binoculars out at the scenic lookout and take a look at South Point so we don't have to drive all that way. We'll meet at 7:30am Sat. May 12 at the Aloha gas station/NAPA auto parts parking lot in Captain Cook. Don't be late, we won't wait..... it's a long drive and we want to get in at optimal morning condtions. We'll have two tanks each and our cameras to show you what you missed if you don't come. Look back soon for the posting of our FREE MANTA RAY NIGHT DIVE for Kona Reefers Dive Club members.

Comments:Well, THE CRACK lived up to its expectations. Don said the area seems to have a lot more fish than other (dived) areas. Allen doesn't disagree and all are looking forward to the next dive there. Another large, empty Spiny Helmet was recovered! Three species of lobsters were seen! Pincushion & Green starfish posed along with their comensal shrimps. And we know a hammerhead shark watched us just out of sight. This weekend is supposed to have low surf, wonderful for shore diving some of the more exciting dive spots........ South Point anyone?

Comments:Can you believe a seasoned diver like Allen, who has dived from coast guard lighthouse up north to Whittington near South Point, has not dived THE CRACK? Well tomorrow is the day for him. We meet at 9am, that's Sat. morn., inside Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Park(just south of Two-Step), to attempt THE CRACK! We're bringing two tanks, flashlights, and a lobster bag just in case. We will also fire up our grill if you want to throw something on after the two dives. Our last dive there turned up the biggest Spiked Helmet shell(empty) that we have in our collection. Hope to meet you there!
