| Comments: | HI! I am a young mom of three beautiful children. My daughter is 7 and the boys are almost 5 and 1. My husband and I have been very involved with early intervention for our almost 5yr old son Jacob since he was just over under 6 months of age. The only reason he was able to recieve early intervention at such a young age is due to the professionals I have as family members, mainly being psychologists. They noticed some mile stones that were not being met which confirmed some deep motherly instints that I had about my son even before he was born.
It has been very overwhelming and emotionally exhausting to see Jacob struggle with the most simple of tasks. I have often day dreamed about how life will be for him when he is older. What will school be like? Will he be taken advantage of or worse? Will he feel like a failure? Will he drive a car? Will he have a girlfriend? Will he be popular? Will he enjoy life or become depressed, so much so that he trys to kill himself? This is my bigest fear, all I want to do is help and protect my boy, my baby. We now have 3 pending diagnoses and one concrete, being LD. The other 3 that are pending are PDD/NOS and/or Asperger's, cerebral pals. and pete maul sezures; all of which would answer so many questions! On top of all of this Jacob is also aflicted with gross and fine motor delays, severe sensory issues(ie. doesn't like loud noise, bright lights, soft touch, big crowds,resturants or change to daily routine; but he does thrive on structure and loves deep pressure and brushing), hypotonia, poor eye sight and severe athsma. Jacob has already been admitted to hopital 17 times due to athsma alone, not including the many visits for tests and therapy as well as his athsma clinic visits. With all of the formal testing that has been completed thus far ( by The Eckert centre for learning and wellness and the LEAD foundation in Calgary,Ab Canada ..AWSOME ! I highly recomend them! ), we did recieve results that we could only dream for... his inteligance is at the 63rd percential or high average range! He is smarter then 62 other kids in his age group! We were so sure that he was slow or mentaly disabled due to his delayed prosessing time, moderate - severe receptive and expressive language delays, moderately delayed semantic skills, being in the 1% with grammer and sentence formation, overall low muscle tone in the oral area (which also aflicts the rest of his body), drooling and fluctuating open mouth posture and gross/fine motor delays. I had first thought that maybe he was brain damaged during the car accident we were in when he was only 3mths old (rear ended by a truck which was being opperated by a "high" teenager). After the accident we noticed that all through is development and growth there was a noticable difference of his entire left side of his body being slower then his right. Maybe we noticed his delays because you only start to meet milestones at 3mths of age. All of his mile stones were grossly delayed ie. not sitting until 10 months, not crawling until 18mths, not walking until 2 2/3 yrs and not talking until 2 1/2 years. Jacob is almost 5 now and has made incredible gains! Even though I haven given you a list full of delays and concerns he is doing so much better then when we first started his intervention. To give an eg. Jacob was rated as being between a 7-10 month old ability level across the board when he was 3yrs old. Jacob can talk in 3-5 word sentences, walk, peddle a bike (for short periods of time due to athma and muscle tone), play computer games and PLAY WITH OTHER CHILDREN...FINALLY WITHOUT CONSTANT AGRESSION!We are still working on toileting though, but that should come with time. Larri,thank-you for giving me hope and a positive outlook in reguards to my sons potential. Just seeing what you have accomplished in reguards to this web site, owning your own business and persueing your passion of karaoke ( Jacobs passion is cars, he's obsessed!)and living independantly and successfully,has truely given me peace. The peace of mind a mother gets knowing that my son can do anything he wants to do. You and your web sight have opened doors for me to my son. I now have a whole new understanding of how he thinks and expierences life. ALL I CAN SAY NOW IS THANK-YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART. YOU ARE OUR ANSWER TO OUR PRAYERS. also post on Karaoke.com JOLT forum, but it's been down for a couple of days now. My 11 year old son in 5th grade has learning disabilities. He has attention problems in school. The school atmosphere with many students in the classroom are very distracting to him. He takes all but two subjects in a LD resource room with fewer students and that seems to help. He is very good at computer and hand held games and never has problems focusing on things he likes. Our most difficult problem is dealing with teachers in the classes outside the resource room. Even with the IEP, they must be reminded of the accommodations they are supposed to follow. Every year there seems to be a problem with at least one teacher. My son takes medication, and that seems to be helping. One reason I sing karaoke to help me deal with school frustrations. It really helps. When I'm having a good time at karaoke, I don't even think about it. Karaoke is great therapy. |

my guestbook... my son, Sean, is almost 5 years old and has Tourette Syndrome and Asperger Syndrome(also sensory integration dysfunction). I also am a non-typical thinker. I have never been diagnosed with a PDD, but I fit the criteria for AS and maybe HFA... I too have Sensory Integration Dysfunction. I have been diagnosed with OCD. I know what you mean about seeing the world differently :0) Sean has a lot of trouble understanding what people are talking about unless they are very literal. He also has a lot of trouble understanding a person's facial expressions and body posture until he learns that particular person. I think in pictures not words, so written and verbal communication can be very difficult for me. Sean seems to think this way also... but he hasn't told me anything like that yet. Anyway...
