Welcome to Dreambook, a nifty new free service from:
New Dream Network, Dreamhost, and Webring!Arnold Schwarzenegger was not Conan! I'll tell you who should have played Conan in the movie. Oliver "The Wolfman" Reed! (Bet you didn't see that one coming.) In the Howard stories, Conan was a swashbuckling hard-drinking adventurer. He was supposed to move like a panther. Does that sound like Scharzenegger? What do you think? Who do you think should have played Conan, then or today? Put your answer in the "dreambook". If you have a minute, please sign my Dreambook too!

| Comments: | Ralf Moller. No ifs, buts or maybes. It's got to be Ralf Moller. I was sure as soon as I saw him as Hagen in "Gladiator". He has the correct colouring and the build - he's something like 6'5"/6" 6" with black hair and blue eyes and the right face. And he's a better actor than Ah-noldt, even if he has been cast as the heavy on most of the movies he's been in. Plus he looks good in a suit. Not a requirement I know, but it can't hurts. Kinda gives him a Michael Madsen vibe
And he's been Conan before - granted in the indescribably awful German "Conan the Adventurer" TV series, but he was the best thing in it. Yes, "Destroyer" was bad but this was far, far, worse. You know it's bad when you can't even get a decent performance out of the shade of Richard Burton (who was playing Crom) and the alien Elephant from "The Elephant in the Tower" looks like a sloppily-made Gonzo reject from the Muppets. Give Ralf Moller the role of King Conan in a big budget version of "The Hour of the Dragon" with a director and screenwriter who understand what Conan is about and you're onto a winner. And yes, I have read Howard's original stories, plus the Carter/de Camp pastiches/re-writes/what-have-you. All of which has led me to the above conclusion. Once more, in case I wasn't clear the first time - Ralf Moller to play Conan! |

| Comments: | I totally disagree with the majority of the people on here. I loved the first Conan movie(the Destroyer was a turd). John Milius did a great job with it. Arnold is perfect for Conan. He is suppose to be huge. I have read all of Howard's Conan and he is always described as huge and well defined. I believe more accurate translations of REH's stories of Conan would require a series of movies. When you just do a one shot like Conan the Barbarian, Milius did well. |

| Comments: | I agree arnold was a bad conan. But not only was he able to move like a panther and strong as an ox, he had jet black hair. In my opinion it would have to be someone who would be able to move but still have a build and look about him that would be intimidating. I think the proffessional wrestler Batista with long hair and ex out the tattoos and hed make a great conan. In reality he didnt speak a whole lot so u wouldn't need a great actor just some one to look the part and be able to handle a camera in there face and i think he would b a great fit. |

| Comments: | My god, you're right. Oliver Reed would have been a much better choice for Conan. I think the Conan movies have done more harm than good in presenting REH's best-conceived character and world-age to a wider, general audience. They have done to the literary Conan what most of the Tarzan movies have done to the Tarzan of the novels - basically gutted the character of any depth. |

| Comments: | I have been fascinated by the Conan myth since the first book I read. I have often toyed with the idea of which adjectives you would use to describe Conan if for whatever reason, you happened to not 'actually' like him. Blaspeming ill-tempered swaggering brute, homicidal maniac, wine-guzzling, whore-mongering cad, arrogant egoist, shiftless , loud and conceited, sly, moody, cunning and obsessive opportunist.Your regular swashbuckling adventurer, by Crom. Believe it or not I think Ronn Moss (Ridge Forester on Bold and the Beautiful)would have played the role with the correct intensity and wit. Beefed up a good couple of pounds, of course. Arnie was a pretty good choice though although he didn't have the 'sharp wit' and cat-likeness of Conan, which I'm sure Arnie could have done if the directors allowed him.

| Comments: | I think you would need an unknown to do justice to the part today. Big name stars are so hard to separate from their public image, and most of them just play the same character all the time (George Clooney for example). Arnold was probably as good as it could get for the first movie, but the second one sucked Crom's arse. Please, no Kevin Sorbo. What about the guy from HellBoy? I forgot his name, but he's old enough to play King Conan, and pretty intimidating physically. Also, he's a damn good actor. |

| Comments: | I enjoyed the reviews. Well done. As for actors playing Conan . . . Arnold, bless his heart, just wasn't tall enough, didn't ACT smart enough, wasn't fast enough, and was given a dismal script and screenplay to work within. Having read all the Conan stories, and most of the other Howard stories, poems, AMRA articles, etc. many years ago, the image of Conan the Cimmerian is fixed in my mind. He was a TALL, elemental, whipcrack smart, tactically astute, giant of a man in all respects. He overflowed with charisma to the point that any group he joined, whether raiders or rebels, savages, bandits, or pirates, he soon rose to the leadership position. An incredibly dangerous fighter and expert swordsman, he nevertheless attempted to avoid violent conclusions until it became unavoidable--he'd rather outfox his foes, if possible. He could size up any situation, knew which men were dependable upon meeting them, and saw right to the heart of any problem. Arnold had an accent--something stated about Conan many times, but sadly, that was about all that he had going to make the role work. If we take into consideration the period in which Howard was writing, the late 20s and early 30s, clearly he WASN'T talking about a bodybuilder physique. |
| Name: | Chris |
| E-mail address: | northstar76@covad.net |
| Comments: | As far as the physique goes, the Rock has the right height and build to play Conan. The problem with Arnold or any other bodybuilder playing Conan is that a character like Conan wouldn't have a bodybuilders physique. He would have large muscles to be sure, but more akin to a super-heavyweight wrestler - like Alexander Karelin -,football player, or competitive weightlifter (which is quite different from a bodybuilder). The above athletes, who develop their physiques for purely functional purposes, have muscularity different than that of the bodybuilder, who aims for size and proportion, the overall appearance. To start Conan is probably naturally big boned with a large frame. War, hunting, harsh conditions, and manual labor along with genetics are responsible for his musculature and strength, so I see him having an overall athletic physique, and not the pumped up bulk or pillowyness of a bodybuilder
The most important thing is Conan's height in relation to others, probably the attribute most mentioned in the stories, along with his "smouldering blue eyes." I've always pictured him, according to clues in the text, at 6'5", no shorter than 6'4", no taller than 6'6" Aside from the physical aspects, movie Conan is nowhere near as sharp, agile, fast, or wild as the book version. |

| Comments: | Interesting theories abound as to who should have portrayed Conan but, I'm sorry to say, they appear to belong to those who have never read a conan story.
Throughout the canon (including those that have continued carrying the torch) the overiding perception is that Conan is a hugely muscled specimen. Arnold was the only 'actor' who could have possibly given the correct screen impression. Granted the film wasn't brilliant and the storyline had as much relevence to Howards brainchild as Irish Stew has to Cordon Bleu, but there was simply no other choice of actor. To suggest Bronson, Nolte or David Carradine(the original choice) is akin to Speilberg casting a Trout as the offshore maneater. |

| Comments: | I believe Arnold would have been perfect for the role of Conan if he had been properly directed. What made John Millius think a hodge podge of parts and pieces of Conan's stories thrown together would make a good moivie? In the original Howard stories Conan was a slave for about fifteen minutes. Remember? cinematography and special effects would have played a large role as well. Do you remember how effective the scene was where Rambo was sharpening his knife? All of the Conan movies lacked intensity. I'd have had scenes where Conan was covered in the viscera and gore of his enemies like in Howard's stories. Also,I think the guy who played the big indian in McKenna's Gold would have made a good Conan. Just my opinion,Ron. |

| Comments: | Everone is going to laugh but I think Vincent D'Onofino would be a kick ass Conan. There is a part in the movie the Whole Wide World where D'Onofino as Robert E. Howard is telling the plot of one of his Conan stories to a group of friends and the intense look on his face just so reminded me of what Conan would actually be like. And on Arnold I'm sorry the two Conan movies of the 1980's are a tavestry and are no more Robert E. Howard's Conan than any other generic S&S movie of the same time period |
| Name: | Ares |
| Comments: | Arnold did a good job as Conan in the first two, and if they are going to make a third Conan movie Arnold should be the first choice for who they try to get to play the part of Conan.
Of the names I've heard people mention as alternatives to Arnold I would say Triple H, or Kevin Sorbo would be the best actor for the part. I lean towards HHH over Sorbo as Sorbo is well spoken and articulate as can be seen in his work in Kull, Hercules(/Xena), and Andromeda. It would seem a waste to cut his dialogue down to what we have seen in the first two Conan movies. While I like Johnny Depp I believe he lacks the muscle mass to play the part, and is too thin to play Conan. Adrian Paul (Highlander the series) would also be someone to consider (if Depp is being considered), but like Depp he doesn't have the bulkiness of Schwarzenegger or Paul Levesque (HHH). Vin Diesel and the Rock are hideous actors who would not do the part of Conan justice, and I would refuse to see the movie if either of them were put in the part! To recap: 1st choice - Arnold Schwarzenegger 2nd choice - Paul Levesque (HHH) And if they weren't available or willing to do the part: Kevin Sorbo Or Adrian Paul |

Years ago I went with my girlfriends to see the Conan movie and it was fun. We screamed when we saw Arnold without his shirt! His big big muscles were like my fantasies! But I think Conan must have black hair, not brown like Arnold's. He should be a little more handsome and smart too and should be very very sexy to look at. I don't know who would be perfect actor. I don't think there is a perfect actor for the best Conan movie. He would have to be a perfect man! I didn't like how Conan was a slave in the movie. Conan could never be slave! |

| Comments: | I went through my adolescence back in the early 70's obsessed with Conan--the Barry Smith comics, the Frazetta paintings, but most of all the Howard original stories. I had always pegged John Saxon as the closest actor back then to come close to playing the Cimmerian, but Saxon would have needed a lot of steroids and pumping up, so I wasn't totally dismayed when Shwarzenegger got the role because he certainly had the matching body even if he lacked the pantherish agility. The problem with the movies was they didn't focus enough on the imagery of Arnold"s muscles. There were two great Conan-like scenes in the movies. One where he was in a wrestle with some green man-monster and there were close-ups of his popping muscles and sheer might in a death struggle, and the other where he was swinging the broadsword around adeptly and confidently--being savage and skilled and overwhelming at the same time. If the movies had simply focused on those attributes and spent a lot more time on images of agility and savagery, they would have been so much more satisfying, so much more Conan. All in all, I think Milius and Arnold did a fine, interesting job--it wasn't my picture of Conan, but it was a well-enough crafted movie of someone else's Conan visage, and Milius certainly gave some memorable images and ideas to ponder. Except for the fight with the green monster-man, the second movie simply sucked and was an embarassment, and that was mostly the producer's and the director's fault. The closest image of Conan to me will always be the Frazetta cover painting for Conan the Adventurer. I wish someone would produce a large chromium poster of it. That would be the epitome of Conan portraits. |

Schwarzenegger possesed the build, however little else attributed to Conan. Who do I think??? Gunther Schlierkamp? perhaps. Also they should have made a third movie that went like this. Conan is King of Aquilonia. It is the eve of battle and as he sits pondering on his thrown his mind drifts to past adventures. They then do 3 differnt short stories. Which ones we can discuss forever as long as it includes The Frost Giants Daughter. |

| Comments: | Early Schwarzeneggar was about the only person who could play Conan. And John Milius was the only one who should have ever had any say as to the flow of the films.
Arnie couldn't speak English. That worked in his favor, as Milius wove a story around visuals and music. What few lines Arnie did have were *great* ones. Kevin Sorbo? Johnny Depp? Puhleeze! Most modern day actors *can't* act. They have pleasant onscreen presences, but we need a character actor. Oliver Reed would have been good, but he was too fat at the time, and now he's dead. Maybe Brendan Fraser, since he has muscle and *is* a superb character actor. But he'd need lots of schooling into the mind of our Conan, and not act like someone out of the modern day. No anachronistic slang, no anachronistic dialects. |

| Comments: | Very Good call on the Oliver Reed choice.I have only seen him in a few roles, but he has the steely gaze and the bronze hue.Something that always ate at me when watching Conan the Barbarian was the absence of a straight black mane and a lot of the cunning, sharp and confident intelligence that the real adventurer possessed. One of the things I enjoy most about the Conan tales is his amazing career as a young general in the Aqilonian army, and his early years as a mercenary soldier.I think If you combined stone with the physical attributes of Van Damme, you'd have a pretty good Northman. |

| Comments: | I wondered that Robert E. Howard was instrested in Ancient Greek and Roman History. Just like Gene Roddenberry who was interested in furture of mankind. He was interested in mankind's past. Most of stories mand by Gene Roddenberry is about our future, such as Star Trek and the Earth the final Conflict, and Amdromeda. In contary, Robert E. Howard made stories about our past, such as Conan, Kull, and other ancient legends. The history of Ancient Greek and Romans played big part of his stories. For example lost City of Atlantis was a Roman Empire. He made its look like it happened in 12,000 B.C. instead of 400 A.D. It is actually a Roman Empire that took place in Ice Age. By contary, Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek has a Federation of Planets that is a furturistic Roman Empire in Outer Space. Both Gene Roddenberry and Robert E. Howard born and lived in Texas and they are greatest writers in 20th Century. |

Howard combined two to make it one story. Conan the Barbarian is story combinning charators from 5th century and Ice Age scenery. The Ice Age ended with extinction of many creatures such as Woolly Mammothes, Mastrodons, Woolly Rhinoceres, and Sabre-Toothed Cats. And Roman Empire ended with collapsed of Super Power of the time. It symbolizes the ending of old and corrupt systems and beginning of new and fresh things to come. Just as Fall of Roman Empire gave rise to new more andanced civilazation. And end of Ice Ace gave rise to more intellegent creatures. Both events is the most important time in human history. |

| Comments: | The lengend of Atlantis has many theories. Some expert believe that Antarctica was Atlantis. But most expert believe that Ancient Roman Empire was Atlantis, because history realy fit well. First of all Antartica had no human being live there. That only thing Antarctica has was penguins and seals. Since 12000 B.C. was unlikely time for anvanced civilzation like Atlantis to exit, because we never learned to refine iron-ore by that time. Since Conan lived after Atlantis disappearred from the map, it make it more likely to be a Roman Empire. After the fall of Roman Empire, many barbarians like Huns,Goths, Danes, Saxons, and Vandals to invade the vacated regions of Empire. Since this happened during 400A.D. and 500 A.D., instead of 12000 B.C. The Conan was like Atilla the Hun like person who led one of Nordic Tribe. This make this story more likely to occured more recently than 12,000 B.C. |

| Comments: | Robert E. Howard, who created the legend of Conan was an ametaur Historian. He was a leading authority on Ancient History. He was an expert on Ancient Egpytian, Greek, Roman, and Nordic History. If Robert E. Howard live to be an old man, he could have been another Gene Roddenberry.
Unfourtuntly he died young. If he had suvived he could gave us better understanding on ancient world. The ancient world hold many mystries about our civilization. If someday we find out who was real Conan and where is Cimmeria is located on map. Today we are petty sure that Cimmeria is a country of Germany. Cimmeria is Greek for Germany. Since Greek Alphabet G is C and IM is ERM, and MERIA is MANY. Many name of countries is name in Greek instead of English, therefore its seems confusing. For example Pict is Scotland, Kush is Sudan, and Hykania is Ukraine. Therefore if he lived Conan's episodes and story would rival Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek and Andromeda in scale!! |
